China said the expulsions were in retaliation for Washington's decision to cut the number of Chinese nationals allowed to work for its state-run media on American soil.

"In recent years, the US government has placed unwarranted restrictions on Chinese media agencies and personnel in the US, purposely made things difficult for their normal reporting assignments, and subjected them to growing discrimination and politically-motivated oppression," China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The expulsions "are legitimate and justified self-defence in every sense,'' it added.

Beijing also ordered the papers, as well as Voice of America and Time magazine, to declare in writing their staff, finances, operations and real estate in China rules similar to those recently imposed on Chinese state media by Washington.

The foreign ministry said the measures "are entirely necessary and reciprocal" moves that China "is compelled to take in response to the unreasonable oppression the Chinese media organizations experience in the US".

A day after charges were dropped, Prigozhin went on the attack, saying the dropped charges showed that the US government “feared publicity and just court proceedings”.

“This means that the allegations that ‘Prigozhin interfered in the US presidential election,’ ‘Concord interfered in the US presidential election,’ or ‘Russia interfered in the US presidential election’ are mendacious and false,” said Prigozhin, according to the statement released by his company.

Prosecutors had previously complained that documents they had provided to the defence had ended up online, and had been hesitant to deliver more sensitive information to Concord’s defence team.

It is not clear whether the plans to file a lawsuit are serious, where the lawsuit will be filed, and why Prigozhin values the damages against him at $50bn. The company’s press office declined to give any more information about Prigozhin’s plans on Tuesday.

The website was intended to facilitate nationwide testing for the coronavirus and was promoted by US President Donald Trump in a news conference.

Howver, it reportedly told people with the symptoms of the virus that they were not eligible for the screening program and they were asked to create a Google account or log in to an existing Google account and sign an authorization form.

The website site was "hoping&nbsp;of expanding more broadly over time", the company said in a statement.

While Verily stated the website was limited to California, Trump said that it was for all Americans to check whether they should get tested.

Trump had also given contrasting statements about the American response of COVID-19 saying ''relax, we're doing great''.&nbsp;

United Airlines said it would announce a cut in the capacity of around 50 per cent for April and May, as the United States ramps up restrictions to try and contain the spread of the coronavirus.

"We also now expect these deep cuts to extend into the summer travel period," said chief executive Oscar Munoz and company president Scott Kirby in a letter to employees published on the airline's website on Sunday.

The airline has begun speaking to unions "about how to reduce our payroll expense," it said, acknowledging this would be "painful" but that senior staff had already been told their salaries would be halved.

American Airlines said it would reduce all international capacity by 75 per cent.

More than a fortnight has elapsed since February 29, 2020, when the United States of America (USA) entered into a historic, though unique, 'Agreement for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan'&nbsp;with the so-called Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (better known as Taliban and notorious for its violent acts of terrorism).&nbsp;

The deal is historic as it promises to put an end to a prolonged but inconclusive war between the USA and Taliban on Afghan soil spread over a period of nearly two decades. It is unique to the extent that a sovereign country and superpower namely the USA has signed the deal with a terrorist organisation which it doesn’t even recognise as a state, whereas the democratically elected government in Afghanistan never participated in the talks. &nbsp;

The main and obvious objective of the deal is to pave the way for the withdrawal of the US and NATO forces from Afghanistan over a period of fourteen months; by doing so President Trump will fulfil his promise to Americans back home, significantly in the year in which he is seeking his re-election. In return, the Taliban assures that no individual or group would be allowed to operate from the Afghan soil against the security of the US and its allies. &nbsp;

It is apparent that the deal is essentially between the USA and the Taliban. The destiny of Afghanistan is left to be settled between the Afghans through so-called inclusive intra-Afghan talks between the Taliban and all other stakeholders in Afghanistan including the elected government.&nbsp;

The intra-Afghan talks, as per the deal were expected to commence on March 10, 2020, with the objective of reaching an agreement on a comprehensive and permanent cease-fire and future political roadmap for Afghanistan.&nbsp;

By available indications, the intra-Afghan talks appear to be facing serious roadblocks and are nowhere close to a smooth take-off. First and foremost, violent attacks by the Taliban against Afghan forces continue unabated. According to the Afghanistan National Security Council statement, the Taliban had carried out at least 76 attacks across 24 Afghan Provinces within one week of concluding the peace deal.&nbsp;

Further, the deal envisages the release of 5000 Taliban prisoners as a confidence-building measure for the commencement of intra-Afghan talks. The Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani, after initial reluctance, announced (through an official Decree) that starting March 14, 1500 Taliban prisoners would be released as a 'goodwill gesture', provided the released prisoners give 'a written guarantee to not return to the battlefield'. He further promised to release the remaining 3500 prisoners after the commencement of talks. The Taliban rejected the proposed staggered release of prisoners insisting that the release of 5000 prisoners was a part of the deal. The matters stand further complicated by the announcement (March 14) of the Afghan government to postpone the release of prisoners on the plea that the government needed more time to review the list of prisoners.&nbsp;

A long-standing political rivalry between President Ashraf Ghani and his former Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah is yet another factor which may influence the fate of the intra-Afghanistan talks. The feud between the two became sharper recently when the Afghan Independent Election Commission finally declared (mid-February) the incumbent Ashraf Ghani as the winner in September 2019 Presidential elections. Abdullah Abdullah declined to accept the verdict and has now formed a parallel government through his own inauguration on March 9- the day Ashraf Ghani was sworn – in as President. If the two leaders remain at loggerheads, the chances are that even if intra-Afghan talks do commence in the near future, the talks will not be inclusive. &nbsp;&nbsp;

It remains to be seen as to how the situation in Afghanistan unfolds in forthcoming weeks and months. The USA has found a way for its 'honourable'&nbsp;exit from Afghanistan. But will peace ever return to Afghanistan? Will the USA keep aloof so long as its own security interests remain unaffected or will it come back to Afghanistan’s rescue if the Afghans, including Taliban, fail to reach an amicable solution for themselves and the Taliban doesn’t give up violence?&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the developments in Afghanistan, particularly the US withdrawal, should be a matter of concern to India. Peace and security in Afghanistan is of utmost importance for India. The USA has secured assurances from the Taliban for itself and its allies. India’s security concerns for sure did not figure anywhere in the deal. India and the USA are no doubt 'comprehensive global strategic partners'&nbsp;but India is not an ally of the USA. &nbsp;

India enjoys significant goodwill amongst Afghanis but has little leverage to influence the situation in that country to its advantage. India’s concerns go beyond the security of its personnel and huge investments in Afghanistan. Pakistan, currently under tremendous pressure from FATF, may find it prudent to relocate the anti-India terror outfits to Afghanistan and thereby absolve itself of any accountability for terrorist activities against &nbsp;India from its soil. &nbsp;

Will India be an Onlooker? Perhaps no, as India has learnt by now that it&nbsp;must be prepared to defend its interests on its own, even if global efforts are needed to combat the global menace of terrorism.&nbsp;

The White House, as a precautionary measure, also started checking the temperature of the ones coming close to the US president or Vice President Mike Pence.

The White House earlier today said "out of an abundance of caution, temperature checks are now being performed on any individuals who are in close contact with the president and vice president."

Ahead of Saturday's briefing, a member of the White House medical team checked the temperature of all journalists who are wanting to attend the event.&nbsp;

One of the journalists was not allowed to attend the briefing after a high reading.&nbsp;

US has recorded 2,226 positive cases of the novel coronavirus, but has not yet reached the peak yet, said top US infectious diseases expert, Anthony Fauci, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director.&nbsp;

"This will get worse before it gets better," Surgeon General Jerome Adams said at the WH briefing.

On Friday, Trump declared a national emergency in a bid to bring "the full power of the federal government" to bear on the escalating health crisis by releasing some $50 billion in aid.&nbsp;

Ohio has five positive cases and 52 people are placed under investigation. However, the state has carried out limited number of tests, much like the US.&nbsp;

In the US, the coronavirus cases surpassed 1,300 on Thursday with around 40 deaths, data from Johns Hopkins University said.&nbsp;

"These numbers are going to continue to grow," governor DeWine said during the press conference, adding that that confirmed numbers "are just a small fraction of the individuals who are infected already in the state of Ohio". &nbsp;

"We're told by medical experts that whatever the number is today, it will double in six days and that just continues on and on," DeWine said.

Public health experts have lashed out at US authorities for downplaying the pandemic and lagging far behind the other badly-affected countries in dealing with the virus.&nbsp;

In order to control the spread, Ohio banned mass gathering of over 100 people. Schools in the state were also shut down for three weeks.&nbsp;

"Taking decisive action now will greatly slow down this disease and stop this trajectory," Acton said.&nbsp;

Censors usually vigilant against rumours have also allowed Chinese social media users to spread similar claims about the US being behind the virus.

A video showing a US health official saying some flu victims were posthumously diagnosed as having had COVID-19 was among the top searched items on China's Twitter-like Weibo this week, with some users saying it was evidence the virus originated in the US.

China's intention in promoting the conspiracy theory is "to divert from domestic discontent" over the handling of the outbreak, which has killed more than 3,100 people in the country.

"Just had a great conversation with Prime Minister Abe of Japan. I told him that the just-completed Olympic venue is magnificent," Trump tweeted late Thursday.

"He has done an incredible job, one that will make him very proud. Good things will happen for Japan and their great Prime Minister. Lots of options!"

Just hours earlier Trump was the first foreign leader to suggest delaying the Tokyo Olympics because of the coronavirus, dropping a bombshell on his "good friend" Abe.

Japanese organizers have reiterated that the coronavirus pandemic will not derail the Games scheduled to run from July 24 to August 8, even if major sporting events, travel and financial markets are already seeing massive disruption worldwide.

The International Olympic Committee also says there has not been any talk of cancellation or postponement.

"With the lighting of the Olympic flame in Olympia today, the International Olympic Committee confirms its full commitment to the success of the Olympic Games Tokyo&nbsp;2020," the IOC said in a statement.

"We&nbsp;remain absolutely in line with our Japanese hosts in our commitment to&nbsp;delivering safe Olympic Games in July this year."

Despite those assurances, fear of the easily transmitted virus forced the torch lighting ceremony to take place without spectators in Greece's Peloponnese region.

Trump said he admired Japan's preparations for hosting the Olympics for the first time since 1964, although characteristically he also praised his own record as a real estate developer.
