"We're not going to federalize the Guard at this time. But, if necessary, we have further military assets that can be deployed ... if the governors and the mayors need it and they can't get control of the situation," O'Brien told reporters at the White House, saying law enforcement decisions should rest with governors and mayors.

"We'll do whatever the governors or mayors need to keep control of their cities," he added.

Protests broke out in several cities after an unarmed black guy (George Floyd) was killed after a police officer knelt on the victim's neck. George kept gasping to breathe, he kept on telling them that he couldn't breathe.&nbsp;

The National Guard said in a statement on Sunday said 5,000 of its soldiers and airmen had been activated in 15 states and Washington, D.C., but that "state and local law enforcement agencies remain responsible for security."

Additional 2,000 National Guards are ready to be dispatched if needed.&nbsp;

As unrest continued into the early hours of Sunday, at least 25 cities across 16 states -- including Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Seattle -- have imposed curfews.

Trump said Chinese officials "ignored their reporting obligations" to the WHO about the virus -- which has killed hundreds of thousands of people globally -- and pressured the agency to "mislead the world."

Trump's decision follows a pledge last week by Chinese President Xi Jinping to give $2 billion to the WHO over the next two years to help combat the coronavirus. The amount almost matches the WHO's entire annual programme budget for last year.

Trump last month halted funding for the 194-member organisation, then in a May 18 letter gave the WHO 30 days to commit to reforms.

It was not immediately clear when his decision would come into effect. A 1948 joint resolution of Congress on US membership of the WHO said the country "reserves its right to withdraw from the organisation on a one-year notice."

The United States currently owes the WHO more than $200 million in assessed contributions, according to the WHO website. Washington also gives several hundred million dollars annually in voluntary funding tied to specific WHO programmes such as polio eradication, HIV, hepatitis and tuberculosis.

On Monday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the health agency's executive group decided to temporarily pause the use of hydroxychloroquine within the solidarity trial to review its safety.&nbsp;

The director-general said the decision is taken after a paper published in Lancet showing people using this drug are a higher risk of death and heart-related problems.&nbsp;

Over 100 Indian and Chinese soldiers were injured in the violence. The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in North Sikkim on May 9.

White House doubles down & dares Twitter to block another Trump's tweet

From Hong Kong to Washington DC and even Taiwan,&nbsp;they are hitting back at China with warnings, threats, and even support to the people of Hong Kong.&nbsp;In less than a week, there have been five retaliatory moves already.

Retaliation number one: the pro-democracy protesters are back on the streets.

Over the weekend, they defied the lockdown and began their campaign against Beijing again. All through this week, the world witnessed the&nbsp;protests.&nbsp;Despite an aggressive crackdown from the Hong Kong police who&nbsp;have arrested at least 360 people, the cops haven't been able to completely stop them.

The US has maintained a special relationship with Hong Kong. The Americans used to treat Hong Kong as a separate entity which allowed Hong Kong to become a financial centre.

However, it looks like Trump wants to end all special treatment. So far&nbsp;the US has not revoked any special privileges. But, Washington is certainly leaning towards it.

Until now, Hong Kong was protected from any sanctions imposed on China. It was not subjected to the high tariffs&nbsp;slapped by Trump on Chinese goods.

It's not just the US government that wants to retaliate. American lawmakers have strengthened Trump's hand with the US Congress approving&nbsp;a bill calling for sanctions on China allowing the president to&nbsp;punish oppression of the Uighur Muslims in China. The bill calls for sanctions against those&nbsp;who are responsible for the crackdown against Uighurs in China.

The US lawmakers are targeting specific members of the Communist Party. The bill singles out the Communist Party secretary for Xinjiang, Chen Quanguo. It accuses him of "Gross human rights violations."

Chen is also a member of the politburo, a group of 25 people who oversee the party. The bill will now go to the White House where US President Donald Trump is expected to sign it or&nbsp;he can veto it too.

But, considering his government's wide ranging attacks on China&nbsp;no one expects the US president to veto it this time.

The fifth and final retaliation came from Taiwan. It is ready to help&nbsp;the people of Hong Kong.&nbsp;On Wednesday, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-Wen, who China calls a "separatist" published a Facebook post in which she said that Taiwan's executive branch will come up with a "humanitarian action plan".

It proposes to give the right to Hong Kongers to flee Chinese crackdown and settle in Taiwan.&nbsp;With the Hong Kong bill, the Communist Party wanted to send a message that&nbsp;the coronavirus has not de-railed its agenda but, like these five retaliations show China has dug itself an even bigger hole.

The world retaliates against China over Hong Kong security law

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was informed in advance by the company's staff of the decision to tag a tweet by US President Donald Trump as "glorifying violence".

Twitter hid a tweet from Trump on Friday, accusing him of breaking its rules by "glorifying violence" in a message that said looters at protests in Minneapolis would be shot.

"The decision was made jointly by teams within Twitter, and our CEO Jack Dorsey was informed of the plan before the Tweet was labelled," the spokeswoman said in an email.

Twitter's decision to step in, at a time of racially charged civil unrest in cities across the United States, escalated a feud between Trump and tech companies.

It came just hours after Trump signed an executive order threatening Silicon Valley social media firms with new regulations over free speech.

Trump's message can now be seen only after clicking on a notice which says: "This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible."

Twitter's action came after Trump said he would introduce legislation that may scrap or weaken a law that has protected internet companies, including Twitter and Facebook.

The proposed legislation is part of an executive order Trump signed on Thursday afternoon. Trump had attacked Twitter for tagging tweets of his this week about unsubstantiated claims of fraud in mail-in voting. Twitter added a warning prompting readers to fact-check the posts.

Trump issued his tweet after days of unrest in Minneapolis, where peaceful rallies gave way to a third night of arson, looting and vandalism as protesters vented their rage over the death of Floyd, a black man seen on video gasping for breath while a white police officer knelt on his neck.

Four police officers involved in Floyd's death have been fired and the FBI is investigating.

The incident was one of several killings of black people in the United States in recent months that has provoked outrage. The Minneapolis night sky was lit up with flame from a police precinct that had been torched overnight.

Sympathy protests also took place in other US cities. In Louisville, Kentucky, police said seven people were shot and at least one was in critical condition.

Protesters there vented rage over another police killing, of Breonna Taylor, a black woman fatally shot during a raid in her apartment in March. Louisville's mayor has asked the FBI to review a police investigation into her death.

US hospitals said they have pulled way back on the use of hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug touted by President Donald Trump as a COVID-19 treatment, after several studies suggested it is not effective and may pose significant risks.

Several hospitals that two months ago told Reuters they were using hydroxychloroquine frequently for patients with COVID-19 have cut back.

Orders for the drug have dropped to a tenth of the late-March peak, to about 125,000 pills last week, said Vizient Inc, a drug buyer for about half of US hospitals.

The significant decrease in use is a sign that US physicians no longer believe the drug's potential benefit outweighs the risks. Some European governments this week banned hydroxychloroquine use for COVID-19 patients.

Dr Thomas McGinn, deputy physician in chief at Northwell Health, New York's largest healthcare system, told Reuters it decided to stop prescribing hydroxychloroquine at its 23 hospitals in mid-April, after clinical data began to emerge.

"People were in our hospitals, they were dying, and we wanted to do something," he recalled. "But the minute the data came out ... showing no benefit and potential harm, I think we all needed to step back," he said.

British medical journal The Lancet last week published an analysis of 96,000 COVID-19 patients showing those treated with hydroxychloroquine or the related chloroquine had higher risk of death and heart rhythm problems.

The observational study does not have the rigor of a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, but its size made it influential.

Seattle's University of Washington hospital system has also stopped recommending hydroxychloroquine as a coronavirus standard of care, noting in its latest treatment guidelines that "recent clinical studies have not demonstrated virologic or clinical benefits."

Trump has been a particularly strong supporter of hydroxychloroquine, calling it a "game changer" early on. He later said he was taking the drug to prevent infection despite no scientific evidence it could do so, after people who worked at the White House tested positive for COVID-19. He has also urged others to try the medicine.

"China’s position on the China-India border is clear. The Chinese border troops are committed to maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas," defence ministry spokesperson, Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang said on Thursday at the monthly ministry briefing.

He further said that the overall situation is "stable and controllable", adding that India and China are capable to resolve the issue through "established border-related mechanisms and diplomatic channels".&nbsp;

On Thursday, India rejected Trump's offer to mediate and Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava saying that the country is already engaged with Beijing to "peacefully resolve this issue".&nbsp;

The standoff between the militaries of both countries started earlier this month in Line of Actual Control (LaC), the 3,500 de facto border separating the two sides.&nbsp;

Twitter on Friday said that one of US President Donald Trump's tweets on Minneapolis protests had breached its rules about "glorifying violence."

"...These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!" Trump's tweet read.
