Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, a recipient of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize, was called a "foreign agent" by Moscow on Friday (September 1). Muratov was the chief editor of Novaya Gazeta- a newspaper that was widely respected overseas for its investigative reporting and was frequently critical of the Kremlin.

Citing local media, the news agency Reuters reported early Saturday the Russian justice ministry said that Muratov was added to the list of foreign agents. The ministry said that Muratov "created and disseminated material (produced by) foreign agents and used it to spread negative opinions of Russia's foreign and domestic policies on international platforms." Who else has been placed on the foreign agents' list? Reuters reported that Russian nationals placed on the foreign agents' list included another journalist who wrote articles favourable to Ukraine, a comedian opposed to the war in Ukraine and a historian from Chechnya. These so-called foreign agents have been subjected to police searches and other punitive measures. While Muratov is still in Russia, many on the list have left the country since the launch of Russia's offensive in Ukraine in February last year. In recent years, Russia has methodically targeted people and organizations critical of the Kremlin, branding many as “foreign agents.” Muratov puts up his Nobel Prize for auction Muratov was a a co-laureate of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, and he later put up his Nobel medal for auction, receiving $103.5 million which he said would be used to aid refugee children from Ukraine. According to a report by the New York Times (NYT) in June last year, the Nobel Prize was sold to an anonymous buyer. Addressing the auction event on June 20, 2022, before bidding began, Muratov said, "We hope that this will serve as an example for other people like a flash mob, for other people to auction their valuable possessions, their heirlooms, to help refugees, Ukrainian refugees around the world." According to UN estimates 6.6 million refugees have left Ukraine with most fleeing to neighbouring Poland including Romania, Hungary, Moldova and Slovakia.

The Norwegian Nobel Institute had lauded Muratov's decision to sell the gold medal to raise funds for children calling it a "generous act of humanitarianism very much in the spirit of Alfred Nobel".

Muratov had pleaded people to donate what they could to UNICEF with the goal to "foster awareness of refugee crises" and to continue giving even after the auction process gets over.

Russian Nobel laureate Muratov sells medal for whopping price to aid Ukraine children

Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia’s leading independent newspapers and whose editor Dmitry Muratov was a co-awarded last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, has suspended its operations until the end of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Chief editor Dmitry Muratov in a statement said they have taken the decision after receiving two warnings of legal action from the government’s Roskomnadzor censorship agency.

A third warning would result in the newspaper's media license being revoked.

Muratov said it was a “difficult” decision, indicating it was an effort to “save” the respected publication and avoid a total shutdown.

“For us and, I know, for you, this is a terrible and difficult decision. But we need to save us for each other,” he said in a statement.

In the last several years, Kremlin had been tightening&nbsp;its noose around the media, prohibiting them from reporting that falls in contradiction with the official government sources. The crackdown increased further in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Under a new law, editors and outlets are potentially are liable for up to 15 years in prison for breaking the new rule.

According to The Moscow Times, another independent newspaper which partly functions out of Amsterdam, most Russian outlets have been forced into exile.

Novaya Gazeta is one of Russia’s oldest and most respected independent media outlets.

It was co-founded by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1993. It is the only main newspaper left voicing criticism of President Vladimir Putin and his tactics in and outside the country.

Last year, Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace prize alongside Maria Ressa of the Philippines for their efforts “to safeguard freedom of expression.”

Last week, Muratov&nbsp;said&nbsp;the newspaper had decided to donate the gold medal to a fund to help Ukrainian refugees.
