Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, made headlines when the officials wrongly declared an alive baby dead on November 30

Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal commented a day after the Delhi government decided to cancel the licence of a leading hospital for alleged medical negligence. While speaking at the launch of the Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojna scheme in Delhi, Kejriwal noted that his government would not hesitate to act sternly in cases of criminal negligence and "looting of parents". Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, made headlines when the officials wrongly declared an alive baby dead on November 30. The baby's body was handed over to their parents in a plastic bag, along with his still-born sister. The baby boy died at a nursing home in Pitampura a week later. The Delhi Medical Association and the Indian Medical Association have criticised the government's decision to cancel the license of the private hospital. The DMA called the decision "irrational and autocratic". In the meanwhile, Kejriwal today went on to say that it takes courage to cancel the licence of a leading healthcare facility like the Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh. "If we had entered into any setting with the hospital, we would not have been able to face our conscience and would have lost the faith of the people. We are not against private hospitals. But we will hesitate to act sternly in cases of criminal negligence and looting of patients," he said. (With inputs from PTI)

Terming United Kingdom's visa norms a "big mistake", London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Sunday said he was "lobbying" with the British government to change its stringent visa norms.

The Theresa May government recently changed its visa policy for non-EU (European Union) nationals to curb its soaring immigration figures.

Terming United Kingdom's visa norms a "big mistake", London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Sunday said he was "lobbying" with the British government to change its stringent visa norms.
India captain Virat Kohli smashed a career-best 243, his second successive double hundred, before a blanket of smog prompted him to declare on 536 for seven in the third and final test against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

The home side's attack then turned the screw even further on the visitors when they reduced Sri Lanka to 131-3 on the second day.

Angelo Mathews capitalised on an early reprieve to score 57 not out and skipper Dinesh Chandimal was on 25 with Sri Lanka still 405 behind on a hazy day in the Indian capital.

Several Sri Lankan players returned from the lunch break sporting facemasks as the seasonal haze affecting the region thickened over the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.

The smog eventually held up play twice and 22 minutes was lost in total as Lahiru Gamage and his pace colleague Suranga Lakmal both left the field during the second session as they found it difficult to breathe.

Umpires Nigel Llong and Joel Wilson were discussing the air quality with the tourists when Kohli signalled his team in.

"We were looking at a total of 550, it was pretty close to that. So we thought we might as well declare," India bowling coach Bharat Arun said, dismissing suggestions it was a forced declaration.

Until then, the stadium's near-capacity crowd was treated to some elegant shot-making by Kohli, who hit 25 crisp boundaries in his master class spread over seven-and-half hours.

The 29-year-old became the first international captain to score six double centuries, all of them coming in the last 17 months.

His latest looked a mere formality after India, chasing a record-equalling ninth consecutive test series victory, resumed on 371-4.

"His absolute focus, attention to details, in terms of fitness, game preparation, his skills, he's spot on," Arun said. "He's an example of what you need to be as a cricketer. That shows in his success rate."

Kohli's partner in a 135-run fifth-wicket stand, Rohit Sharma, smacked left-arm wrist-spinner Lakshan Sandakan (4-167) over long-off for a six but all eyes were on Kohli as he approached the 200-mark.

The skipper took two runs off Lakmal to bring up his double century, celebrating it by leaping into the air before removing his helmet to acknowledge the applause.

When India came out to bowl, Mohammad Shami dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne for a golden duck and Ishant Sharma trapped Dhananjaya de Silva lbw for one to immediately dent the tourists' reply.

Dilruwan Perera, spilled in the slip when on 16, made 42 before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed him leg-before.

Sri Lanka missed opener Sadeera Samarawickrama, who suffered a mild concussion on Saturday and was advised by doctors to skip play on Sunday.

"I think it's an abnormal case, I leave it with the ICC (International Cricket Council)," Sri Lanka coach Nic Pothas said of the conditions.

"I think the match referee and the umpires will file a report to the ICC. Our job is to play cricket."

He also hoped that Mr Obama's move may go a long way in generating awareness among local residents and may even propel action on combating air pollution. Sharma has been invited to attend an interactive session with Obama at the town hall. “You are one the most photographed people on earth, but none of your photos could potentially save millions of lives yet. I believe that if you wear a face mask while you are in Delhi and take a photo (of it), that alone could have an impact,” Sharma wrote in his letter to Obama. He also reasoned that most people can't really afford expensive face masks and air purifiers in a developing country like India. The Centre said it will take "harsh measures", if needed, to prevent any repeat of the recent smog episode," PTI reported. Emergency measures will kick in if PM2.5 and PM10 concentration cross 300 and 500 ug/m3 and stay there for 48 hours at a stretch. The government of Delhi has issued a health advisory urging people to avoid stepping out during early morning and late evening hours. Schools have been directed to avoid outdoor assemblies and other activities in the early morning hours. Air quality at various areas in the city was recorded at 'hazardous' level today. While air quality at Anand Vihar was recorded at 575 at 10 am today, DTU Delhi stood at 420. Gurugram's air quality was recorded at 253 and Dwarka was at 245. (With inputs from PTI)

The air quality in Delhi was 'very poor' once again with an AQI of 335 on Friday

Amidst the continuing high levels smog, at least 33 trains were delayed, five were rescheduled and three were cancelled due to low visibility and operational reasons. The air quality in Delhi was 'very poor' once again with an AQI of 335 on Friday. However, the air quality on Thursday was the lowest when AQI hit 288 falling in the 'poor' category. Around four train accidents have taken place in less than 12 hours, taking lives of about seven people and injuring 11. The deaths have raised some concerns over railway operations and safety. The train derailment in Chitrakoot district in Utter Pradesh killed three passengers while Pradeep-Calcutta goods train derailed in Odisha recently. Four passengers were killed and two were injured when a local passenger train hit a Bolero vehicle near Amethi in UP. More recently, as many as three died and eight injured after 13-coach Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express derailed at Banda in Uttar Pradesh early Friday. The national capital has been experiencing dense smog for about a month which has given a rise to these accidents. Railway minister Piyush Goyal stated that he has requested the officials to stop taking any requests for letting trains pass during maintenance work, reports said.

I lived in Bastar, Chhattisgarh for six months between August 2014 and February 2015. While I was there, I met a girl whom I soon grew fond of. She left before me, returning home to Bengaluru. Sometime later she travelled to Delhi to visit her grandparents and I wrote her a letter, wanting to introduce her to my city. It was only the next morning, by when the letter had been finished and sent, that I realised I had written not one but two love letters. One of course to her and the other to Delhi. I reproduce the letter here.

Ms X,

If you have managed to get into my town, I hope you are not staring into your computer but getting “out there”. Should you be having trouble comprehending how to get out there in what might be a strange and unfamiliar city, may I please offer a few suggestions? Needless to say, they will be better than anything that you might find in a travel guidebook.

1. Have dinner at Karim’s in Old Delhi. Karim's is right next to the Jama Masjid, which gives it atmosphere. Plus the food at this Karim’s – it's the original – is better than at any of the branches that came after it. I don’t really know why but I have been meaning to find out. Please note: Their tomato shorba is to die for, especially on a cold winter evening.

2. Visit the Nehru Memorial, Museum and Library. Peacocks roam the lawns and you get to see photographs of a young Jawaharlal with his severe-looking father. I am an admirer of Nehru's and I wish people would not be so quick to censure him but I guess that in this country you can be authoritarian (like his daughter Indira) and people will still love you so long as you win a war (she won ’71). Nehru, of course, lost ’62, which is about the only thing people remember about him.

Have lunch here. Lunch is simple, vegetarian, and you sometimes have to queue for up to 30 minutes to get it but this is one of the few places in Delhi where time has stood still. And just for a minute, you get the feeling that you’re still in socialist India when our democracy actually stood for something.

3. Have lunch at Andhra Bhawan. They serve a staple vegetarian thali and you can order meat (fish, chicken, or goat) with it. Please note: Their (vegetarian) refills are endless, so you cannot expect to do much work after having eaten here.

4. Have tea at the cafe at Triveni Kala Sangam. Their carrot cake and brownies with cream are nice. So are their gulab jamuns. Their omelettes are wonderful.

Please note: They shut early, by about six.

They pushed up their prices recently; till some time ago you couldn't run up a cheque for more than Rs 250 but at least they haven’t tried to modernise in other ways. The curio shop within the compound sells interesting knick-knacks. And since they’re an art and sculpture gallery, should you look around, you also get to feel cultured.

The place to actually have a meal here was Gunpowder, the coastal kitchen, but the proprietor Mr Warrier (a former, very unhappy-looking journalist) unfortunately decided to move to Goa. We hope and pray that he will return, but I do not think he will.)

6. Go to Chapter 25 in Shahpur Jat for an evening drink. The bar is so called because it was opened by three 25-year-olds. Women like it because the bartender is very good-looking, plus the bar is nice and they have some interesting EDM nights. I like the bartender because he pours large drinks. Or you could go to the nearby Potbelly, the Bihari kitchen, but they’re better for lunch.

7. On a Wednesday or Saturday evening, go for dinner to Le Bistro du Parc in Defence Colony. This is not in Defence Colony market but right under the Moolchand flyover, just opposite Flavor’s, the Italian kitchen.

Le Bistro is run by the very pretty Naina (she’s half French, half Punjabi, and now that I think of it, has a nose that’s a bit like yours. It is a very nice nose).

Le Bistro is obviously French and has a very good wine list. The French nationals who come here are all as slim as you, the Indians are all as fat as me, which says something about our cuisines.

Or of course, you could just try good old Flavor’s opposite. It’s run by an Italian who’s been around forever. His tiramisu and coffee are delectable and we like him because he was really the first man to teach us that Italian food did not mean Amul cheese dribbled over everything.

Should you decide that the food at Le Bistro does not contain enough oil and masala for your Indian palate, you could always try the mutton keema kathi roll (I think I might faint) at the Nizam’s right behind Flavor’s.

Please note: I hear that Le Bistro has the writer Rana Dasgupta – he wears his pants up to his chest – play the piano on Wednesday evenings.

8. My little favourites. Drive to India Gate late in the evening. Park on the central radial, the road leading up to North and South Blocks. From vendors here, you can buy coffee, kulfi and chuski. Nearby there is cona coffee served in beakers at United Coffee Home in Connaught Place (I really haven't heard anybody call it Rajiv Chowk as yet). Their tajines are exotic enough too but I don’t recommend the food here. CP is a little decrepit nowadays, and UCH’s hygiene seems a bit off.

9. In the winter, do a Sunday picnic lunch at Lodhi Gardens. Pack lunch and a bottle of wine. (You’re not allowed to carry alcohol in so the bottle of wine will have to be hidden in a knapsack.) Get there once the sun is out properly. Don’t worry about when to leave, you won’t want to.

10. Finally, go watch a play at the National School of Drama, or Kamani auditorium, or the Little Theatre Group; they’re all next to each other near CP, close to Triveni. The NSD festival is held sometime in January, so you’ll miss that but if you’re lucky there might be an opera playing in town. The coffee at NSD during the interval is especially good. Plus it gives you the time to ponder why sometimes even going to a mediocre play can be enjoyable.

And remember of course, as we say in Delhi, to “enjoy!” (I still haven’t figured out exactly what that means.)

Delhi Metro lost over three lakh commuters a day after a steep fare hike came into effect on October 10, an RTI query has revealed.

The metro's daily average ridership came down to 24.2 lakh in October from 27.4 lakh in September, translating to a fall of around 11 per cent.

The Blue Line, considered the metro's busiest, lost over 30 lakh commuters, according to data shared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in response to an RTI query by a PTI correspondent.

The 50-km corridor connects Dwarka to Noida. The metro currently has a 218-km network across Delhi-NCR.

The fall, in terms of absolute numbers, was over 19 lakh on the Yellow Line, another busy corridor which connects Gurgaon to north Delhi's Samaypur Badli, DMRC said.

Ridership on the Violet Line, which connects ITO to Faridabad, plunged by 11.9 lakh in October. The number of riders on the Red Line, from Dilshad Garden to Rithala, came down by 7.5 lakh.

Ridership has come down several notches below the numbers observed in recent years, bucking a trend of rising on the back of the launch of newer sections.

In fact, in October 2016, the metro's daily average ridership was also 27.2 lakh, despite a comparatively shorter operational route. On October 10, DMRC effected the fare hike, leading to a rise of around Rs 10 for nearly every distance slab. This came barely five months of another hike of up to 100 per cent.

After the first phase of the hike in May, the metro lost nearly 1.5 lakh passengers per day in June.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government has mounted a stiff opposition to the hike, leading to a confrontation with the Centre.

DMRC and Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri supported the move saying it was essential to maintain metro's financial as well as operational health.

He rejected Kejriwal's opposition, saying the Centre was in no position to disregard the recommendations of a Fare Fixation Committee which had drawn up the revised fare list.

The revised fare structure is: up to 2 km - Rs 10, 2 to 5 km - Rs 20, 5 to 12 km - Rs 30, 12 to 21 km - Rs 40, 21 to 32 km - Rs 50 and for journeys beyond 32 km - Rs 60.

Alauddin Khilji has become a household name, thanks to the swirling row over Padmavati, but not many know that Delhi Sultanate's most powerful ruler lies buried in the Qutub complex.
Ironically, the tomb which is located in the same complex as the Qutub Minar, a popular tourist spot, is often overshadowed by the grandeur of the world's tallest brick minaret built by his ancestors.
Historian and writer R V Smith argues that the popular contention that Khilji was a womaniser is untrue, and asserts that he was the one who "saved Hindustan from the Mongols".
"Had he not been there, the shape of Hindustan would have been different, in terms of geographical and racial compositions," he told PTI Bhasha. He clarified that Khilji invaded Chittor, but only to expand his kingdom like any other ruler. "It was not done for Rani Padmini," he said.
They even threatened the other members and said to one of the guys that you have two daughters be careful else we can do something to them as well. Fortunately, my male colleagues are difficult to scare than me. It was a terrible time, I have actually locked it in one compartment in my brain and I tried to forget about it. It affected me terribly. They were repulsed because we were working in the interest of the residents and not of the market and this bothered them. I am far too strong and I know how societies view women - I wanted to be the change and I will continue my duties forever more," she said.
