An AQI of 0-50 is considered as 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor', and 401-500 'severe'. Once the AQI crosses the 500-mark, it falls under 'very severe' or 'emergency' category.&nbsp;

As per the central government-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the air quality may improve to ‘poor’ to ‘moderate’ on Saturday.

Cooler temperatures and lighter wind trapped heavy smog over the Indian capital on Wednesday, pushing pollution to "severe" levels in many places with no immediate relief in sight, government agencies said.

The overall air quality index (AQI) in the city was 494, according to the monitoring agency SAFAR.

The index measures the levels of airborne PM 2.5 - particles that can reach deep into the lungs. Anything above 60 is considered unhealthy.

With the cool season setting in, the city was likely to suffer for weeks, news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

"Now that it is getting colder, air is not rising high enough to disperse pollutants. The whole trapping is happening close to the ground," said Anumita Roy Chowdhury, an executive director at Centre for Science and Environment, a Delhi-based research and advocacy organisation.

The Central Pollution Control Board said pollution levels had touched 500 in some parts of the city, meaning danger for healthy people, not just those suffering from existing conditions.

Farmers burning stubble in their fields in areas around the city have been generating clouds of acrid smoke, SAFAR said, and the smog could get even worse.

"No sudden recovery is expected under this condition at least for the next two days and AQI is likely to deteriorate further," it said.

No relief for Delhiites as air quality stays at 'very poor' levels

The air quality of the national capital remained under the 'very poor'&nbsp;category for the second consecutive day on Saturday.

According to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi docked at 335 at 8:30 in the morning.At Dhirpur, the AQI was 317 while in Delhi University it was 321.

While in Lodhi Road and IIT Delhi, the AQI was 332 and 350, respectively.

The pollution remained the same due to the light rains and cloudy sky accompanied by the slow speed of winds on Friday.

"The overall Delhi AQI is in a VERY POOR category. Isolated drizzle, cloudy conditions with calm winds prevailed yesterday instead of expected good rain, prevent boundary layer growth and lead to the accumulation of local emissions," stated SAFAR.

The organisation also predicted that a marginal deterioration to the higher end of the very poor category is expected by November 10.

No drastic slip in AQI is expecting for the next three days.

Experts warned that both state and national governments needed to go beyond short-term remedies.

Stop-gap solutions "can't be a substitute for addressing the major long-term chronic sources of air pollution", Daniel Cass, from global non-profit Vital Strategies, told AFP.

Changing agricultural practices, switching electricity generation sources and accelerating the conversion of home heating from charcoal to natural gas were also key measures in the pollution fight, Cass said.

Siddharth Singh, a climate policy expert, said the traffic restrictions are "ineffective".

"If air pollution was solely due to the vehicular traffic, then this would be a solution. Right now it cannot be a solution because motorised private transport has a very small share in the whole pie," Singh told AFP.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking Centre`s immediate intervention in evolving a consensus to address the problem of pollution in Delhi.

"The situation as it prevails today demands a consensus rising above political affiliations and regional considerations. I look at you, Mr Prime Minister, to initiate the process of evolving that consensus, without further delay," Singh states in the letter.

Singh has further stated that he is "hurt and pained" at the declaration of a public health emergency in the national capital.

"This unprecedented development has exposed the hollowness of our claims of being a progressive and developed nation. How can a country be called developed when its capital city has been reduced to a gas chamber, not by any natural disaster but a series of man-made ones," writes Singh.

The Chief Minister further expressed the way he has been feeling about lakhs of men and women, and especially senior citizens, who can barely breathe in the toxic air, which is currently evolving in Delhi.

"The state government blames the stubble fires triggered by the farmers in Punjab and Haryana for the smog. Stubble fires supported by the winds blowing in the wrong direction are contributing to the toxic levels of air pollution but according to the data from several independent agencies, the large-scale industrial pollution, traffic overload, excessive construction activity taking place in Delhi is equally to blame," Singh further writes.

Chief Minister Singh has mentioned that in Punjab a law has been enforced against stubble burning to the maximum extent possible.

"The farmers are being penalised but Delhi continues to experiment with its own set of solutions to the woes of traffic and industrial pollution, with little success," he added.

Recalling his meetings with Prime Minister Modi, Singh wrote: "Many times I have suggested a separate bonus amount of Rs 100 per quintal to facilitate stubble management by the farmers."&nbsp;

On Friday, according to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the overall AQI dipped to 425 which falls into "severe" category.

The calm surface wind condition that prevails last two days over Delhi has led to strong surface nocturnal inversion and accumulation of pollutants.

Also, the effective stubble fire counts of Haryana and Punjab&nbsp;has increased from the previous day count of 1057 to 2396, as evident from SAFAR-multi-satellite fire product.

The stubble fire percentage contribution of Delhi's air quality which has touched the season's highest share of 35 per cent on October 30 is predicted to be 27 per cent for today and 25 per cent on November 1.

Delhi: Pollution control body declares public health emergency as air quality turns 'hazardous'

Amidst deteriorating weather condition in the national capital, Delhi Government on Wednesday issued circular advising schools to ensure that no outdoor activities are organised.

"The present air quality condition in Delhi is a cause of concern for all. To ensure that students studying in schools of Delhi are not adversely affected due to the current air quality, all the heads of government, government-aided and unaided recognised schools under Directorate of Education are hereby directed to sensitise the parents of the students about the worrisome air quality situation prevailing in and across Delhi and further appeal them to restrain their children from undertaking outdoor activities till severe pollution condition persists," read a circular from the Directorate of Education - School Branch.

"Outdoor activities and exposure in the polluted atmosphere could have 'long term detrimental effects on the health of children'. Therefore, parents may be requested to adopt a preventive approach to safeguard their child's health including using the masks," it added.

The Directorate of Education has also advised all the heads of government, government-aided and unaided recognised schools under Directorate of Education to ensure that no outdoor activities are organised in schools till severe pollution condition persists.

Delhi and its adjoining areas such as Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad are again back to its annual encounter with the extreme air pollution post-Diwali.

At around 10 in the morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was docking at 423, which falls in the hazardous category, said System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

The pollution level in the national capital is expected to rise in coming days.

On Wednesday evening, pollution went from severe to critical as air quality index showed 606 micrograms per cubic meter.According to Dr Arvind, a senior chest surgeon who has been dealing with pollution affected patients, Delhi's air is unfortunately not fit for breathing.

Living in this air is harmful in every respect and for any age group. Pregnant women, children and asthma patients are more vulnerable.

"In such a situation, apart from a normal situation that is itching in nose and eyes and soar throat problems, asthmatic patients suffer a lot. This year polluted air can lead to brain stroke and heart attack. Furthermore, pregnant women are more prone to be affected. The child in the womb gets ill. Also, this leads to a chronological effect on children's brain. Their brain development is capped that is it doesn't grow as it should," Arvind said.

Talking about the remedies and precautions, he said, "There is no way one can escape or save itself from this polluted air. When the air quality index goes beyond 600 only precautions or remedy is to stop breathing."

Tourist coming to Delhi are forced to buy masks in order to prevent themselves. One such tourist said that it's been one week when he came to Delhi. He didn't expect that air quality will be that worse.

"After coming to Delhi and breathing here I started feeling uneasiness and then my group went to buy a mask, now we explore daily in a mask," the tourist said.

A Bangladeshi tourist, Bablu said, "This is a beautiful country. We can see ample of trees here. Despite that, the pollution is very high. This should not be the case."&nbsp;
