<p>To begin with, Dottin admits she is highly disappointed with her exclusion from the Gujarat Giants squad for reasons she claims to be untrue. Explaining what happened from the start, the star all-rounder said she did suffer from minor abdominal pain in December last year, for which she consulted two specialists for a second opinion. Upon meeting them, Dottin was advised to rest until February 13th. Though from the next day onwards, she was cleared to resume training.</p>

<p>While she experienced some soreness upon her return to the training ground, she informed about the same to the Gujarat Giants physiotherapist, with whom she was in constant touch throughout. This message, according to her, was misconstrued and conveyed to the Gujarat Giants management as ‘she is still experiencing abdominal pain post-session’ – which was not what she indicated.</p>

<p>Following this, the management asked her to get herself locally assessed in Canada, where she stays, despite Dottin receiving medical clearance from her treating surgeon on February 20th.</p>

<p>Five days later, Dottin received an email from the franchise’s physiotherapist asking her to submit a fitness report along with the recent scan by 26/02/2023; if she fails to submit both documents, she might be deemed unfit to participate in the maiden edition of the WPL. Now as February 25th was a Saturday, it made it nearly impossible for her to attain both over the weekend.</p>

<p>However, on Monday, February 27th, she received another email from the Head of Adani Sportsline – who own Giants, stating that the franchise was unable to find an appointment for her at a private hospital; and as a result, they would now seek a replacement for her for the WPL 2023.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, as things stand, Gujarat Giants are currently taking on the UP Warriorz at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.</p>

<p>The inaugural Women Premier League (WPL) is all set to undergo on Saturday with the opening match between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians. The Giants, however, have suffered a blow as Deandra Dottin, the West Indian all-rounder, has been ruled out of the league.</p>

<p>The all-rounder, who was bought at the auction for INR 60 lakh, is recovering from a medical situation. The Giants, however, have already named Australian Kim Garth as her replacement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Garth, who was with the Australia squad that won the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup in South Africa, had gone unsold last month at the auction. The Australian has moved to country recently after completing the necessary formalities.</p>

<p>The opening game of the Giants will be played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Beth Mooney, the Australian who guided her side to the sixth WC title with 74 off 53 in the final, will be captaining Gujarat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There would be total 20 regular-season matches in the league one eliminator and a final in the playoffs. A total of five teams are part of the marquee league namely, Royal Challenger Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz.</p>

<p>All the matches of the league are going to be played in Mumbai with five double-headers on March 5, 18, 20 and 21. The auction for WPL players took place on February 13 with Indian opener Smriti Mandhana, captain of RCB, being the costliest player of the league by getting INR 3.4 crores.</p>

<p>The other top picks were England's Nat Sciver-Brunt and Aussie Ashleigh Gardner, both going for INR 3.2 crores. Indian and Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was the second pick in the auction, going for INR 1.8 crores.</p>

WPL 2023: Gujarat Giants suffer blow as Deandra Dottin ruled out of season with injury

<p>It’s not even a day since the WPL 2023 has started and we are already hit by a controversary.</p>

<p>On Saturday, ahead of the first match between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians, Gujarat released a statement saying the attacking Windies all-rounder Deandra Dottin is injured they are replacing her with Australian Kim Garth in the squad.</p>

<p>However, that’s not even the case as Dottin on her social media handles on Sunday quoted saying she really appreciates all the messages coming her way but she doesn’t know what’s she recovering from as she’s not even injured. She tweeted this, saying, "I really appreciate all the messages but truth be told I’m recovering from nothing but the Holy Ghost anointing thank you."</p>

<p>West Indian all-rounder Deandra Dottin starred with both bat and ball as she powered Supernovas to an unprecedented third Women's T20 Challenge title triumph with a four-run win over Velocity in a thrilling final here on Saturday.</p>

<p>Dottin top-scored with a 44-ball 62 at the top of the order to help Supernovas to 165 for seven after being put in to bat. With the ball, she took two wickets for 28 runs in her four overs to play a major role in restricting Velocity to 161 for eight.</p>

<p>South African batter Laura Wolvaardt almost single-handedly took Velocity within striking distance of a sensational win with a blazing 65 not out off 40 balls, which included five fours and three sixes.</p>

<p>Wolvaardt, who became the only batter in the tournament to score two half centuries, launched a ferocious onslaught in the death overs with a flurry of boundaries to raise hopes of a stunning victory for Velocity.</p>

<p>Number 10 batter Simran Bahadur (20 not out off 10 balls) also chipped with three successive fours in the penultimate over. Velocity needed 17 runs from the final over but left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (2/28) conceded just 12 runs to win the match despite Wolvaardt hitting a six off the first ball.</p>

<p>If Englishwoman Ecclestone made life difficult for Velocity batters in the first half of the run chase, Australian leg-spinner Alana King (3/32) did the same in the back end. King was on a hat-trick after dismissing Sneh Rana and Radha Yadav off consecutive balls in the 16th over.</p>

<p>Supernovas had won the first two editions of the tournament in 2018 and 2019 before losing to Trailblazers in the final in 2020. The tournament was not held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Velocity had finished runners-up in 2019.</p>

<p>Velocity made a blazing start to their run chase with openers Shafali Verma (15) and Yastika Bhatia (3) scoring 28 runs in the first two overs but that proved to be the only time the Deepti Sharma-led side was ahead in the match.</p>

<p>They suffered a batting collapse with half of them back in the hut for 64 runs in the 11th over. They were reduced to 38 for three, and things got only worse from there.</p>

<p>Earlier, Dottin made full use of an early reprieve to score a blistering half-century and propel Supernovas.</p>

<p>The 30-year-old Dottin was dropped on 13 by Sneh Rana off Deepti Sharma in the fourth over, and she made Velocity pay for that costly mistake by making 62 off 44 balls, which was studded with one four and four sixes.</p>

<p>The experienced campaigner stitched 73 runs for the opening wicket with Priya Punia (28) and added 58 for the second wicket with in-form captain Harmanpreet Kaur (43 off 29 balls).</p>
