Harsha Bhogle, a cricket analyst shared his thoughts on the "harsh" punishment given to Steve Smith and David Warner.

He said, "I must admit 12 months is a very harsh ban. 6 months I thought was right but clearly this reflects the uproar in Australia."

He further added, "It means they miss the India series and have little time to get ready for the World Cup."

He also said, "Haven't Australia made enough of a spectacle of Steve Smith? I'm blown by what he is being put through."

No leadership role for Smith, Bancroft for 1 year after ban ends: Cricket Australia

An emotional Cameron Bancroft asked for forgiveness Thursday over his part in a ball-tampering scandal, saying he was ashamed of himself, but refused to comment on the role David Warner played.

Bancroft was banned for nine months after using sandpaper to scratch the surface of the ball during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town in an incident that sent shockwaves through the sport and that he said he would regret "for the rest of his life".

He then tried to hide the evidence down his trousers, only to be caught on camera.

The 25-year-old opening batsman, who has played just eight Tests, will also be required to undertake 100 hours of voluntary service in community cricket.

"It is something I will regret for the rest of my life. All I can do in the short term is ask for forgiveness," Bancroft, who was close to tears, told reporters in Perth after arriving home from Johannesburg.

"I feel like I've let everyone down in Australia and I'm not proud of that, it will take time for that to heal and earn the respect back.

"Through this whole experience and whirlwind few days it's been obvious to see how much the game means to Australia and the public, and we are representations of that. It's been a big wake up call for what that means."

Cricket Australia said Bancroft had attempted to "artificially alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper", with the aim being to generate more swing for Australia's bowlers.

Warner, who was also sent home and banned for a year, was charged with developing the plot and instructing Bancroft to carry it out.

Bancroft said it did want to comment on other players, and denied he had ever tampered with a ball before.

"I'm not here to comment about other players. I want to show how sorry I am, at the end of the day they are my actions and I am accountable," he said.&nbsp

"I have never ever been involved in tampering with a ball (before now) ... it compromises my values and what I stand for as a player and a person."

He declined to say whether he felt his ban was too harsh or whether he planned to appeal, only that he respected the process and "I will work with my manager and we'll move forward with that".

The ICC has slapped the duo with a one-match ban but news reports quoted Cricket Australia sources as saying the duo could be hit with 'exemplary punishment'

Australian cricket players Steve Smith and David Warner could be staring at a possible life ban, news reports said Monday. The duo had stepped down as captain and vice-captain of the Australian team on Sunday, after a stunning ball-tampering admission by Smith. The ICC has slapped the duo with a one-match ban and fined Australian batsman Cameron Bancroft — who did the actual tampering, against South Africa — 75% of his match fee. The bans and the fine have been called "very lenient" by a number of people: wow @ICC wow. Great treatment nd FairPlay. No ban for Bancroft with all the evidences whereas 6 of us were banned for excessive appealing in South Africa 2001 without any evidence and Remember Sydney 2008? Not found guilty and banned for 3 matches.different people different rules — Harbhajan Turbanator (@harbhajan_singh) 25 March 2018 × But there has been tremendous fallout back home in Australia. Steve Smith, David Warner facing possible life bans

A day after Steve Smith admitted to altering the condition of the ball during the day 3 of the third Test against Australia in Cape Town, the Australian government has called for the removal of Smith as captain.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also termed the incident a shocking disappointment.

"It seems beyond belief the Australian cricket team have been involved in cheating. Our cricketers are role models and cricket is synonymous with fair play. How can our team be engaged in cheating like this? It beggars belief”, said the prime minister.

“I’ve spoken with David Peever, the Chairman of Cricket Australia, a few moments ago and I’ve expressed to him very clearly and unequivocally my disappointment and my concern about the events in South Africa. It’s their responsibility to deal with it, but I have to say that (to) the whole nation, who holds those who wear the Baggy Green up on a pedestal, about as high as you can get in Australia this is a shocking disappointment. It’s wrong, and I look forward to Cricket Australia taking decisive action soon,” he added.

Earlier, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) called for Smith to be stood down immediately, along with any other members of the team leadership group or coaching staff who had prior awareness of, or involvement in the plan.

However, Smith insisted he will not quit after teammate Cameron Bancroft was caught using a yellow object to alter the condition of the ball.

Cricket Australia said that they were sending Iain Roy, Head of Integrity, and Pat Howard, the High Performance Manger to investigate the ball-tampering issue and attempt to get a clearer picture.

CA chief James Sutherland said that they were “extremely disappointed and shocked with what we woke up to this morning.

The ongoing series has already been marred by several on-field and off-field incidents.

South Africa currently lead by 294 runs with five wickets in hand going into day four.

Cricket Australia, players union set to reach agreement over pay dispute: Report

Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin and fast bowler Ryan Harris will join the team's coaching staff for the tour of New Zealand in January, the country's cricket board said on Tuesday.

The pair will act as coaching consultants during the three-match one-day international series against New Zealand in January and February, Cricket Australia said.

Harris will concentrate on bowling, with regular coach David Saker heading to India early with batting coach Graeme Hick to prepare for the test series starting in February.

Haddin, who joined Harris in retirement last year, will be employed as a fielding consultant.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to have ex-players of the caliber of Brad and Ryan on board for this tour and continue their involvement in Australian cricket," head coach Darren Lehmann said in a media release.

“Both these guys have worked hard on their coaching since leaving the game and thoroughly deserve their opportunity.

“They will bring a great insight to the team and their appointment highlights some of the depth we have in Australia in the coaching pathway system."

Haddin, 38, has been involved preparing the next generation of talent in the Australia 'A' side, while Harris, who has aspirations of becoming the team's next head bowling coach, was an assistant during the one-day international team's recent 5-0 whitewash by South Africa on tour.

“South Africa was a great learning experience for me and it was fantastic to be back with the team again," said Harris.

Australia's coaching staff have been under the microscope, with both the test and one-day teams struggling in recent months.

Australia's series-opening loss to South Africa in Perth on Monday was its fourth defeat in succession after the 3-0 whitewash in Sri Lanka.

The second test against the Proteas starts on Saturday in Hobart.

Cricket Australia (CA) will push for up to two day-night Tests at next year's Ashes series despite the misgivings of captain Steven Smith and his England counterpart Alastair Cook.

Both skippers said they felt the game's most enduring series could survive without being played under lights but CA CEO James Sutherland said he felt it was a "natural progression". "I respect the views of Steven and Alastair," he told reporters in Melbourne today.

"The Ashes is a great contest and will no doubt attract a huge audience both at the grounds and on television, but the facts of the matter are by playing day-night Tests, we're going to get even bigger audiences at the game and on television. The Ashes series is still a long way off and we want to get through this summer first but we will play somewhere between zero and two day-night Tests during the Ashes in 18 months' time."

Australia played the maiden day-night Test against New Zealand at Adelaide Oval last November and have just agreed another flood-lit match with South Africa at the same venue during the home summer.

The hosts will also play their series-opener against Pakistan with the pink ball in Brisbane for the first time in December.

Smith has backed day-night cricket repeatedly but said he did not feel it necessary for the Ashes, which reliably draws big crowds. "I think it works pretty well with the red ball," he told media while on tour in the Caribbean. "It's been around for years and I think playing against England we always get the viewers and the crowds out," added Smith.

Cook echoed Smith's position. "It's probably not a series where you need to do it exactly at this time," he said.

England and Wales Cricket board chairman Colin Graves has also backed day-night cricket, saying it was only a matter of time that a match would be played in England.
