Researchers in Canada have begun using algae to develop low-cost serological test kits for the novel coronavirus.

The researchers from the University of Western Ontario in Canada say the new method will overcome shortfalls of existing processes while saving money.

The team collaborated with Canadian integrated energy company Suncor to develop microalgae as a production factory to make necessary proteins to identify COVID-19 antibodies in someone previously infected with the disease.

The researchers noted that one of the limiting factors in developing large-scale serological testing is the ability to make significant quantities of the viral proteins on a cost-effective basis.

Current tests rely on proteins made in reagents. Algae are cheap to grow and can easily be engineered to produce the viral proteins.

South Korea's model of containment of the novel coronavirus is being hailed as one of the best in the United States. It's said how South Korea dealt with the outbreak can serve as a blueprint for local and national policymakers wrestling with how best to proceed.

The new study from South Korea -- titled "Coronavirus Disease Outbreak in Call Center, South Korea" -- describes how South Korea dealt with an outbreak in a high-rise building in the busiest part of Seoul with an early intervention.

The intervention included closing the entire building, extensive testing and quarantine of infected people and their contacts.

The virus knows no walls: once a business is infected, the entire community may quickly become infected, unless dramatic action -- such as occurred in Seoul -- is taken.

The said study was conducted by experts from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local institutions.

The outbreak was first recognised on March 8, 2020, approximately two weeks after South Korea found itself amid the outbreak. The outbreak arose from exposures at the Shincheonji Church in the city of Daegu, about 150 miles south of Seoul.

About half of South Korea's current toll of 10,738 confirmed cases are related to the Shincheonji Church outbreak.

Guided by previous outbreaks of SARS and MERS, South Korean health officials had a mature process for containment in the building already in place. A response team immediately undertook review of the site of the infections -- a 19-storey mixed commercial-residential building.

On March 9, one day after the first cases were reported, the entire building was closed. Testing was performed almost immediately on 1,143 people (workers, residents and a few visitors) with rapid results available to those affected and the team working to control the situation.

Also read | Trump claims he's seen evidence coronavirus originated in Chinese lab

The testing showed that 97 people (8.5 per cent of those occupying the building) were infected. Most of the cases were women in their 30s and almost all (94 of the 97) worked on the 11th floor of the building, in a call centre.

Investigators then constructed a detailed map of who was and was not infected, demonstrating that the overwhelming majority of cases had worked on one side of the 11th floor in extremely close proximity.

Forty-three per cent of all workers on the 11th floor developed infection with an even higher proportion among those in the heavily affected wing.

The next step -- the families and housemates of the 97 people with infection were tested. Of these, about 16 per cent were positive for Covid-19.

No cases were diagnosed in the 15 home contacts of cases with "pre-symptoms" (nothing at time of test but development soon thereafter) or no symptoms at any time.

Upon summarising their investigation, the officials said the cases were in a "high-density work environment" and that spread was largely limited to one section of one floor.

The distance between chairs and the duration of exposure were critical determinants of transmission at a single point in time -- but "allowing undiagnosed persons to unwittingly go about their business increases the opportunity for more and more uninfected people to have close and sustained contact with them, possibly leading to a secondary case," they said.

Had the investigators waited a week, the infection would likely have spread widely to family, then to friends, then to friends' workplaces -- just as we are seeing in the outbreaks in US meat processing plants with a comparably high-density work environment.

This report from South Korea is being hailed as a perfect blueprint to follow in order to contain the pandemic in the US, and the world.

The US has so far reported over 61,000 deaths from coronavirus, while the global tally has topped 2,30,000.

Germany is set to reopen playgrounds, museums and churches from Monday to go with the small shops that reopened this week despite the risk of a new outbreak of the novel coronavirus. The country will decide within days about schools and sports events as it eases its way out of lockdown.

Any further easing would depend on the rate of infection remaining low.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, however, warned that there was a risk of triggering a resurgence of the coronavirus if people dropped their guard and forgot about social distancing guidelines.

Germany has withstood the pandemic much better than other countries, courtesy widespread virus testing, an excellent healthcare system and strict lockdown measures introduced in mid-March.

Merkel's conservatives and their Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners have also passed a 750-billion-euro ($820 billion) rescue package to mitigate the economic impact of the crisis. Her chief of staff Helge Braun said social distancing measures - the requirement to wear face masks while shopping and on public transport and stay at least 1.5 metres from other people -- would remain until at least May 10.

Germany's 16 federal states are also working on a plan to reopen bars and restaurants and allow some sport to take place. But larger events such as concerts and major sporting events would not be able to take place before August 31.

Germany has the sixth-highest number of confirmed infections, at over 1,62,000. The country has recorded 6,500 deaths from the virus.

With social distancing in full force and people retreating into digital worlds, a Chilean hospital has reintroduced letter writing as a way to comfort its coronavirus-stricken patients.

Nurse Laura Debesa, from the critical care unit of capital Santiago's San Borja hospital, said she had heard about an initiative in Spain in which strangers wrote to patients starting with the lines: "I don't know you but...."

Debesa thought a similar scheme might provide comfort for her charges after the hospital banned visitors because of the outbreak.

She set up an email account to receive letters, which she stipulated should start with the phrase: "Hello, how are you? I am writing to you because I want to keep you company."

With a little help from local media and social networks, the idea went viral. As of Wednesday, 1,700 letters had been written by children, the elderly, and people confined to their homes, from all over the country and from Chileans living abroad.

Jorge Wilhelm, the hospital director, said it was proof that "situations like this also bring out the best in us."

Debesa said many of the letters had reduced her patients to tears.

"The response that we've had has been so lovely and so huge, we never expected the number of letters that have poured in," she told Reuters TV.

"There are a couple of patients who have been hospitalized for quite some time... and they ask for a letter each day. A patient we had discharged last week took her letter home with her, she had been so thrilled to receive it."

Every letter is absolutely unique, Debesa said. "Everyone has their different way of seeing things, their different beliefs," she said.

"Some people don't believe in anything but send positive energy, others believe in God, others in the strength of the earth. There's such diversity, it's lovely to see."

India, like many other countries, has been put under a strict lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19. Dubbed as the world’s “strictest lockdown” owing to the nature of restrictions alongside the large swathe of population being under lockdown, India will suffer unprecedented economic losses.

According to Crisil Research, India might permanently lose four per cent of its gross domestic product value owing to the lockdown, which has now been extended upto May 17.

Even though the economy will eventually recover in many ways, this four per cent loss could be permanent, the research suggests.

The GDP forecast for the country has been halved to 1.8 per cent for 2020-21, the lowest in over two decades. In March, the projected rate of growth was estimated to be 3.5 per cent.

According to Crisil Research, the fiscal measures required by the country amount up to over Rs 3.5 lakh crores, as opposed to the current Rs 1.7 lakh crores. The GDP forecast for the country has been halved to 1.8 per cent for 2020-21, the lowest in over two decades. In March, the projected rate of growth was estimated to be 3.5 per cent.

United States President Donald Trump has contradicted a statement from his own intelligence community by claiming he had seen evidence that proved the novel coronavirus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China. He, however, declined to provide details to validate his assertion.

The remark came in the wake of a public statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence -- which stated that no such assessment had been made. The US intelligence community in fact said that it "concurs with the wide scientific consensus that COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified".

Trump, however, told reporters: "I have seen the evidence. I can't tell you that. I'm not allowed to tell you that."

US and China have been at loggerheads ever since the outbreak burgeoned into a global pandemic. Trump officials have been pushing the US intelligence community to determine the exact origins of the coronavirus outbreak in pursuit of an unproven theory that the pandemic started because of a laboratory accident in China.

To this end, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a statement stating the intelligence community was exploring two possibilities but cannot yet assess if the outbreak "was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan" or began "through contact with infected animals."

Scientists and intelligence professionals have even warned that the US may never know the precise origin of the virus.

The New York Times earlier reported that a number of top officials in the Trump administration had pushed US intelligence agencies looking into the origin of the novel coronavirus to "hunt for evidence" linking the virus to a Chinese laboratory.

To this end, Trump, when asked about the US intel report, said, "Well I haven't seen the report yet, but I will tell you, if you speak to the head of intelligence right now, you speak to the head, they did say that I was given a briefing when I said I was given it, not before and they also said that it wasn't specific and it was not a panicked briefing."

This also corroborates Trump's tenuous relationship with the intelligence community -- dating back to the earliest days of his presidency as he has routinely questioned their assessments, particularly their conclusion that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump claims he's seen evidence coronavirus originated in Chinese lab

The new president of the United Nations Security Council Estonia has called for more transparency and information on COVID crisis even as the country has sought cooperation among members of the core UN body. Speaking exclusively to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal Estonia's envoy to India Katrin Kivi this kind of threats can't stop on the state border. Estonia had presented COVID draft in March but due to lack of consensus among permanent UNSC members, it was not adopted. The country has also invited India to join in open meetings during their presidency. On Kashmir, she said, UNSC should be seized of other mater and no one should bring the bilateral issue on the table of the body.

WION: Key focus areas for Estonia as the President of UNSC?

Ambassador Katrin Kivi: Thank you for inviting me, it a pleasure to share some insights about the Estonian Presidency at UNSC. We have a number of priorities, starting with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Estonia will push to address the issue because the ongoing pandemic can have a huge impact on global peace and security and many humanitarian issues.

We will also look at many cybersecurity-related issues because in recent times, cybercrime, cybersecurity incidents have significantly grown and we must contribute to making our society more resilient to that.

Furthermore, we will also address the issue of climate change and security because there as well a clear security link. Changes going on a global level, and they may one day have a very dramatic impact to our security.

Of course, there are many global conflicts and wars, like the conflict in Syria, conflict in Ukraine. Estonia pays attention, also, rule of law--both offline and online should be applicable.

As you all know we have to work now remotely, the same goes for UNSC, that remains working from home offices, at least for the month of May and the role of presidency remains that these meetings remain substantial, transparent and natural one, that looks like the normal meetings.

WION: UNSC has been found missing on COVID crisis..how hopeful you are that your presidency will see an action?Ambassador

Ambassador Katrin Kivi: Yes, Estonia was pushing since the month of March to put the COVID crisis on the Agenda of the UNSC. It took for a while because we could not get consensus immediately among some permanent members of the council but of 9th April, the issue was on the agenda and was discussed and we could make some press conclusions from that.

Of course, we will continue to address the issue because we need more information. We have to be transparent and continue cooperation because only this way we could solve the issue.

WION: More information, you talked about, the world has been asking for transparency on the COVID-19 crisis?

Ambassador Katrin Kivi: I think it is time for multilateral efforts also in the framework of WHO. It is not yet time to concentrate on who is guilty or who was not able to do this or that.

We need to cooperate because this kind of threat can't stop on the state border and we need, also all security council members on board while discussing and addressing the issue.

Once we have some solution, then it is time to make to take lessons learnt, conclusions on how to better react in the future. Only in that way we can assure an adequate and kind of reaction that makes a difference.

WION: Your FM spoke to EAM earlier this week, what was the focus of the talks?

Ambassador Katrin Kivi: My FM called his counterpart EAM Jaishankar on Monday, and they mainly had two issues to discuss, one was the upcoming chairmanship or presidency of Estonia at the security council and my FM invited EAM to take part in some of the council meetings in May.

Some of them are open to all member states, some of them are informal. For example on cyber stability, conflict prevention, and starting from May 8 we will mark 75th year of the end of World War-II.

This is also an occasion to address the security situation, security architecture in Europe or globally in order to avoid a similar kind of atrocities like we have been witnessing during the second world war.

The second was the digitalization. DIgital cooperation and our two countries are very advance and it is most natural that Estonia and India cooperate on cybersecurity, on e-governance and also we have MoUs with Indian computing emergency response team and Estonian information authorities.

Our respective companies and state actors are working together because of digitalisation offerers many answers to the current crisis, how to better and safely work from home.

It is time for working from home or home office, and security setting there maybe not best updated to the current challenges as to working normally from home. Estonian cybersecurity companies have made many mobile applications and digital platforms accessible free of charge as our contribution to the current crisis.

WION: Technology is something Estonia is master of, how much will that be the focus of your presidency?

Ambassador Katrin Kivi: In the UNSC and at the UN, there is a group of friends of cybersecurity and e-governance and Estonia and Singapore are co-chairs of these groups and we will raise the issue of how also other states could give the best digital solution available on the same platform to the rest of the world.

We will for sure address the issue in the month of May and we are very happy about the cooperation with India, especially since you are joining the UNSC as of next year and we will be working together--not only this year in May but we will continue our cooperation.

WION: Kashmir is something one country in the region is keen to talk about...under your presidency, will it be raked?

Ambassador Katrin Kivi: Our view about addressing the issue at the UNSC has not changed. We think it is a bilateral issue that should be resolved through direct contact and dialogue.

We would encourage both parties to further work on it. But UNSC should really be seized for a very, very serious global conflict like chemical weapons use in Syria or similar magnitude.

We encourage further India and Pakistan if necessary take direct contact and resolve it bilaterally and not raise the issue at UNSC.

Spy agencies across the world are targeting the American research organisations to find out about potential coronavirus vaccines.

In conversation with the BBC, Bill Evaning, the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center claimed that the US government had warned medical research organisations of security risks and potential breaches.

Even though no data has been reportedly stolen yet, the UK has also reported similar activity.

The race is on

As COVID-19 continues to push societies into lockdowns, the race to develop and distribute the vaccine has amped up.

From private medical companies to government agencies, everyone is currently focused on eliminating the pandemic.

While domestic spy agencies are entrusted with the job of protecting local data, foreign actors may be interested in obtaining the information.

"We have been working with our industry and government folk here very closely to ensure they are protecting all the research and data as best they can," he told BBC.

He further added that foreign intelligence services, especially the Chinese Communist Party will try to get their hands on the information regarding a vaccine.

But he would not say whether there had been confirmed cases of stolen data.

Operation Warp Speed

“Operation Warp Speed” is the codename for the US government’s coronavirus vaccine programme.

Once the vaccine is out, the country that came up with it will benefit its citizens first, and will then move on to global distribution.

"We've been in contact with every medical research organisation that is doing the research to be very, very vigilant," Mr Evanina added, while speaking to BBC.

Earlier, in mid-April, an FBI official had warned of “intrusions” into databases of institutions that are currently working on a coronavirus vaccine.

Given the current climate whereby thousands have died across countries, it would make sense why any country would want access to the vaccine programme.

United States President Donald Trump has hinted at imposing tariff on China as a punishment for the coronavirus outbreak. He, however, ruled out considering cancelling US debt obligations to the country.

Several countries including the US and its allies like Germany, Britain and Australia are holding China responsible for the spread of coronavirus. There have been multiple voices in these countries on ways to seek compensation for the losses inflicted by the pandemic.

To this end,Trump said debt cancellation is a "rough game" and may harm the sanctity of the US currency.

"We can do it with tariffs. We can do it other ways even beyond that without having to play that game. That's a rough game," Trump told reporters in the East Room of the White House.

Meanwhile, Congressman Clay Higgins demanded that China be held accountable for the spread of the virus.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in an interview to Fox news asserted the same.

"The cost that has been posed on the United States economy not only monetary, but we've had now more than 50,000 people whose lives have been lost. We've got to get the economy cranked back up, but all of this is a direct result of the fact that this virus came out of China," he said.

The International Criminal Police Organisation, more commonly known as INTERPOL has recently reported information claiming that food delivery services across the world are being used to transport drugs across the world.

As almost all of the world is still currently under lockdown, delivery services have witnessed a surge in terms of demand, as people have been advised against venturing outside unless absolutely necessary.

INTERPOL data claims to have received reports from police forces in Ireland, Malaysia, Spain, and Britain whereby many delivery agents tried to transport drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, ketamine, and ecstasy.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, as movement of people and goods remains largely suspended, there has been a surge in demand for home delivery of essential items.

Just last month, the Spanish National Police arrested seven people who were masquerading as food delivery drivers in Alicante and Valencia.

As part of their delivery set up to deliver cocaine and marijuana, they were using motorcycles and cars. Many of these drugs were hidden in delivery backpacks.

Ireland recently recovered over 8 kgs of cocaine alongside two handguns in pizza boxes, the INTERPOL statement added.

The agency further said that it’s possible that delivery partners may be unaware of the consignments being shipped, or they may be complicit. However, in cases whereby suspects were disguised as delivery drivers, complicity wasn’t a question.

According to Reuters, Latin American drug cartels have dispatched shipments of cocaine to Europe in the last few weeks.

More than 32,000 Indians in the UAE, who wish to return home amidst the coronavirus lockdown, have registered with the Indian missions here on day one of the opening of the online registration process, according to a media report.

On Wednesday night, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi announced the details of data collection through the website of the Indian Consulate in Dubai.

Within minutes, the site faced technical issues, prompting the missions to delete the tweet about it and repost it hours later.
In a tweet posted in the wee hours of Thursday, the Indian Consulate asked applicants "to bear with it if it takes time for the page to load due to high traffic."

"As of 5 pm on Thursday, we received more than 32,000 registrations," Consul General of India in Dubai Vipul told the Gulf News.
Vipul said the technical issues took place because of the huge rush of people trying to access the webpage on the Consulate's site for registration.

Though the mission is yet to analyse the data to know the "compelling reasons" for the applicants to travel home, Vipul said the applications comprise various emergency cases including that of pregnant women.

"We understand that people want to go home for various reasons. People should be ready for travel by keeping in mind the overall restrictions on travel given the pandemic situation. Those who wish to go urgently should keep trying to register on the website in the next few days," he said.

He said the registration would be open for some days and the data collected by the Indian missions in various countries would be provided to Indian states for making preparations for their travel.

The Consul General reiterated that the registration in the databank does not guarantee a seat on the initial flights that would be arranged to repatriate the most deserving categories of people.

"Workers in acute distress, medical cases, pregnant women, the elderly and the group of Indians stranded in Dubai Airport," are likely to get first priority when the government resumes services for repatriation, he said.

Since there is no guidance from the Indian government on the conditions for travelling, he said, it is not yet clear how the COVID-19 status of an applicant would impact the journey.

When asked about media reports that said 500 Air India flights and three warships of the Indian Navy are on standby for evacuating stranded Indians abroad, Vipul said he had no knowledge about warships being readied for the process.

"I am sure Air India will be involved. I have no information about the warships," he said.
Meanwhile, the government of Kerala on Thursday said the total number of registrations it received from Malayalis living in 201 countries has reached 3,53,468.

The Consul General urged Keralites in the UAE, who have already registered with Norka (The Non Resident Keralites Affairs), to also register with the missions since it would help the central government to make arrangements for flight operations.

One thing the Chinese love is their street food! And Wuhan is famous for one such delicacy which is not found elsewhere - noodles.

But these are not simple noodles. The alkaline noodles are made with sesame sauce, spring onions, turnips, and a variety of spices. The South China Morning Post reported that over half of the city’s population consumes these noodles everyday.

The noodles, though mostly found in Wuhan, are also accessible across Hubei province. The noodles are soft and chewy, and rich in carbohydrates.

Cailinji is the the most famous hot dry noodle brand in Wuhan. After being cooked, the noodles are swivelled around in cold water, and then the delicacy is greeted with a coating of oil. This particular style was introduced by the Cai family of Wuhan.

The unique ingredient in these noodles is the sesame paste.

As the South China Morning reported, these noodles were sold by Cai Mingwei in 1928, who saw that most shops were discarding sesame paste after pressing the oil.

Until 1950, the noodles were called “sesame sauce noodles”. Cai registered the name “hot dry noodles” in that year.

Owing to the noodles’ popularity, the Hubei government came up with a set of rules that must be followed while making such noodles. According to the decree, sesame must make up 50 per cent of the sauce, which also mandatorily must include peanut sauce, soybean flour, and vegetable oil.

The alkaline value of the noodles is set by the government between pH value of 7.2 to 9.2.
