Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina has launched a local herbal remedy -- which, he believes, can to cure patients suffering from COVID-19. He presented the remedy to the press on Monday.

President Rajaolina said the medicine had cured two COVID-19 cases.

The medicine is derived from artemisia -- a plant with proven efficacy in malaria treatment -- and other indigenous herbs. It has been developed by Congolese Doctor Dr Jerome Munyagi in partnership with the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research and branded COVID Organics.

The herbal remedy is mandatory for children returning to school. The drink is being distributed for free in some schools that are reopening and in poor neighbourhoods.

"All profits will be donated to IMRA to finance scientific research,” the president wrote on Twitter.

Madagascar, an Indian Ocean island nation of 26 million people, currently has 128 recorded cases of Covid-19 and no deaths.

Madagascar is also currently battling an outbreak of measles, which last year killed nearly 1,000 children.

As of now, there are no approved drugs for COVID-19 and numerous treatments and vaccines are currently being tested around the world.

The largest-ever evacuation carried out by India was the 1990 airlift of Indians from Kuwait during the Gulf War in which 170,000 Indian expatriates were from the west Asian country.

In the first phase itself, India will start evacuation of its citizens from the neighbourhood with Maldives and Bangladesh being the focus. On 8th May, 700 Indians will be evacuated from Male to Kochi by Indian Naval ship.

In the second phase, India will start evacuation of its citizens from Iran, USA, UK and Malaysia. Indian missions across the world are already preparing a list of distressed Indian citizens.

Sources told WION, "Data collection ongoing in most missions, with some looking at dates for evacuation and making all necessary arrangements accordingly."

Several missions have opened registration for the stranded Indians.

Around 11,000 stranded Indians have registered with Indian mission in Moscow, 1200 in New Zealand, 390 Indian nationals have so far registered with High Commission of Nairobi, 2000 at India's mission in Canada and five Indians in Somalia have also registered so that they can get back home.

Only asymptomatic passengers would be allowed to travel and Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) for the evacuation had been prepared in this regard.

"State Governments are being advised to make arrangements, including for testing, quarantine and onward movement of the returning Indians in their respective States.", MHA in a statement said.

The evacuation will only be on "compelling grounds" and will be done via planes and naval ships on payment basis and non-scheduled commercial flights would be arranged for air travel. During the evacuation, all health protocols like social distancing norms will have to be followed.

INS Jalashwa, Indian Navy's largest Amphibious platform (Landing Platform Dock). is already at sea. It is likely to be sent for evacuation. It can carry 1000 troops. With the current social distancing, norms it can carry 500-700 people. 2 to 3 Landing Ship Tanks (LST) are likely to be deployed. India has 2 class of LST-- Magar class and Shardul.

The evacuees after reaching the destination would have to register on the Indian government's Aarogya Setu app which has been developed to alert about COVID-19 crisis and alerts regarding it. After being medically screened, they will be quarantined for 14 days in a hospital or an institutional quarantine on payment-basis by the State governments which will be followed by COVID test at the end of the given period.

Earlier this year, India brought back approximately 2500 of its citizens and 48 foreign nationals from China, Japan, Iran and Italy.

2015 Operation Raahat saw India bringing back around 4600 of its citizens while Operation Sankat Mochan of 2016 saw India bringing back 600 of its nationals from South Sudan. 2011 Operation Safe Homecoming to bring back Indians from war-torn Libya saw 15000 Indian nationals being brought back.

A total of 168,845 New Yorkers have now been diagnosed with the bug, according to statistics from the city’s Department of Health.

The total number of coronavirus cases across the globe surpassed 3.5 million on Monday and deaths neared a quarter of a million, according to a Reuters tally. Experts, however, have been fearing substantial underreporting even as the rate of fatalities and new cases slows down.

Globally, there were 74,779 new cases over the past 24 hours, taking total cases to around 3.52 million.

Deaths related to COVID-19, the disease caused by the new virus, stood at 246,920.

While the number of new cases has come off a peak of 104,495 reported in a single day last week, it is still at around 75,000 to 90,000 cases per day globally.

North America and European countries still accounted for most of the new infections reported in recent days.

But case numbers have been rising from smaller bases in Latin America, Africa and Russia.

The 3.52 million compares with around 3 million to 5 million cases of severe illness caused annually by seasonal influenza, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), but falls far short of the Spanish flu, which began in 1918 and infected an estimated 500 million people.

The mortality rate is also 10 times higher than for influenza in all age groups.

The first death was reported on January 10 in Wuhan, China, after the virus emerged there in December.

The daily rate of new cases worldwide has been sitting in a 2%-3% range over the past week, versus a peak of around 13% in mid-March, prompting many countries to begin easing lockdown measures that have upended businesses and crippled the global economy.

The loosening of restrictions has proved controversial, however, as experts debate the best strategy to ensure there is no large "second wave" outbreak.

In the United States, around half the country's state governors partially reopened their economies over the weekend, while others, including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, declared the move was premature.

The US is set to begin treating a few of the critically ill coronavirus patients with the antiviral drug Remdesivir even as contradictory results from several studies had put a question mark on its further use.

The medication was recently given fast-track approval for use in the US.

Reports now say it could be administered apart from clinical trials as early as Monday to the first coronavirus patients. Additionally, manufacturer Gilead is making plans to export it to other nations who give it the green light.

To this end, the California-based Gilead has its entire supply of 1.5 million doses of Remdesivir ready -- which could be used to treat 1,00,000 to 2,00,000 patients.

The development of Remdesivir, which is administered intravenously, had started in 2009 and was used in Ebola patients during the 2000s via an emergency authorisation by the Food and Drug Administration.

The experimental therapy will be reserved for patients who are gravely ill, which the FDA defines as needing assistance to breathe.

Gilead has also accelerated its production of the antiviral drug.

As of Monday, there were 11,58,040 cases, and 67,682 deaths in the US.

Pak FM rebukes journalist who questioned him on social distancing

Amid the coronavirus lockdown when the movement between countries is restricted, lawmakers from Australia and New Zealand are discussing the possibility of opening up borders to each other. To this end, they may create a travel corridor -- or "travel bubble" -- between the two nations.

Although the two countries are separated by about 2,000 km (1,243 miles) of sea, they have one of the closest bilateral relationships in the world. Australian passport holders can travel and work in New Zealand indefinitely without a visa, and vice versa. The two countries also contribute heavily to each other's tourism industry.

Both countries almost completely shut their borders to foreigners in March. But with both appearing to have successfully brought their coronavirus outbreaks under control, politicians are now talking about when borders could be opened to each other.

August is when the corridor is likely to be rolled out, possibly in time for the ski season in New Zealand and the school holidays in September.

However, to get this bubble in place, airports may need to roll out new procedures.

Experts believe the bubble would only work if the current 14-day quarantine period for anyone entering the country is removed.

A potential Australia and New Zealand travel bubble may end up being a model for the rest of the world.

A challenge that however lies ahead for both countries is not moving too fast, and create a second COVID-19 wave. Moving too fast could also jeopardise their image with international tourists.

Just in! A 'travel bubble' between New Zealand and Australia amid coronavirus lockdown

A majority of the world population is under lockdown, and the governments across the world are trying to control the movement of its citizens to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

Some of the administrative work is done through mobile applications. Several apps, however, suffer from the restriction on the number of participants to partake in a video or voice communication. Other applications have their share of privacy and security complications.

To this end, a Dehradun-based company has launched Bharat.live app.

The Centre had exhorted Indian tech companies to develop an indigenous and secure substitute for Zoom. It even announced a prize money of Rs 1 crore to the winner, and Bharat.live is a contestant.

Privacy and security are integral to the value system in Bharat.live with an impeccable track record. The company is contemplating ways to scale and strengthen the application.

Simplicity is the key -- this platform free application does not require participants to download it or enter a code to join video meetings. It is a browser-based application.

How does one use Bharat.live to chat?

You can register with the necessary details and OTP authentication to receive Login ID, Password, and Login Link. Hit 'create a new meeting,' add a name to get Meeting URL, Meeting ID, and Meeting Code. To invite others, send a meeting URL to the participants. Participants will click the URL, type their name in the dialog box to join the meeting. Users can choose the screen to share it with others.

No webcam is required unless you want to transmit your video. You do not even need an account either to join a meeting, and you require one only when you have to host and initiate a meeting.

You can enter any name to join the meeting. You need not log in with personal Facebook or Google. The site does not ask for your email ID. No chat or records are stored on servers as of now. A security breach is the remotest possibility. Data such as IP address is collected for the time being to facilitate your call.

Bharat.live does not share one's personal information with anyone. No offline information or information via channels other than the website is collected for visitors. It does not record meetings or videos either.

Bharat.live supports clear calls with about 50 participants.

The app offers a free trial plan for 2 hours and 10 participants. Other plans are available with separate pricing for business and consumer categories.

Bharat.live app has crossed five lakh users with approximately one lakh users per day.
