China has been pushing its borders far out into international waters. The speed and scale of this military aggression is unprecedented.

There have been ten instances of how the Chinese regime is using the pandemic to wage a silent war. Encroachment of Indonesian fisheries is still happening with the first instance that was reported in January. An incursion by a Chinese coast guard vessel near the north Natuna islands. Indonesia had to beef up its naval defences.

The area is internationally recognised as part of Indonesia but China is infamous for violating the sovereignty of others. The result is Chinese incursions in Indonesian waters haven't stopped.

Also, the ramming a Taiwanese coast guard vessel which happened on March 16. At least ten Chinese speed boats entered Taiwan's territorial waters.

They attacked a patrol vessel which was clearing illegal Chinese fishing nets then targeting a Japanese naval ship that occurred in the East China Sea on March 30.

A Chinese fishing vessel collided and badly damaged a Japanese maritime destroyer. China said this was vessel was sailing in its waters and endangered its safety.

The sinking of a Vietnamese fishing boat near the Paracel Islands on April 2 was another example. The fishing boat sank after being hit by a Chinese coast guard vessel. A crew of eight on board the boat was captured and detained. China's excuse was the same - threat to its interests in the South China Sea.

Then the unwarranted drills in the Taiwan Strait. On April 11, Chinese fighter jets conducted drills just miles away from Taiwan. The reason was America's support for Taiwan's sovereignty. A US destroyer was transiting through Taiwan on this day. China deployed an aircraft carrier in the Miyako Strait which happened just two days later on April 13.

Miyako Strait is a strategic international waterway nobody can lay claim to this Strait. China deployed an aircraft carrier, two guided missile destroyers, two multi-role warships, and a fast combat support ship near the Strait.

China deployed an exploration vessel near Malaysia. On Apri 16, China sent a "survey ship" to the Malaysian exclusive economic zone. A "survey" activity inside Malaysian waters.

It also stablished new districts in the South China Sea. It was first reported on April 19. China announced new administrative districts in the contested waterway which the Global Times said was for better management.

Expelling a US vessel conducting routine operations that happened last week. Beijing had accused Washington of taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic by aggressively intervening in the South China Sea.

And finally, it gave official names to islands in South China Sea. Chinese authorities released standard names for 25 islands and reefs in the South China Sea in April. The Global Times said that the standardization of names reflected China's sovereignty over these islands.

Amid COVID-19 pandemic, China wages 'silent war' in international waters

Three-quarters of Americans would take a coronavirus vaccine after receiving certain assurances that it was safe, and another 9% would take one as soon as it was available, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday showed.

The strong support for a vaccine comes as vocal anti-vaccination protesters joined right-leaning groups to protest shelter-at-home orders imposed by public health officials in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

Development of a safe and effective vaccine is widely believed by public health officials to be key to controlling future outbreaks, but it is not clear how long that process would take - or if a vaccine can even be developed for the virus.

Asked to choose one or more reasons they would feel comfortable taking a new vaccine, about 40% of American adults surveyed in the Reuters/Ipsos study said they would wait until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved such a vaccine, and 38% said they would try one after extensive, peer-reviewed clinical trials.

About 38% said they would wait until such a vaccine had already been taken by much of the public and proven safe. A smaller number, about 6%, said they would take a coronavirus vaccine after a friend or family member tried it, and the same number said they would try it if President Donald Trump were to endorse it.

Among those who were willing to be vaccinated against the virus, 89% would do so if it was made in the United States, and 11% said they would take it if it were developed in another country.

"A vaccine would be an important tool, because I don`t think the virus is going to disappear," said Arthur Reingold, head of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, Berkeley`s School of Public Health.

But he cautioned that people`s willingness to take a vaccine will vary depending on what happens as time progresses.

"If there is a raging epidemic going on and bodies are piling up all over the place they`re probably going to be more likely to get the vaccine," he said.

The highly contagious coronavirus has infected more than 1.2 million people in the United States, including at least 70,000 who have died from COVID-19, the respiratory illness it causes, according to a Reuters tally.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,215 American adults, including 1,015 who identified as registered voters. It has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

A fired scientist has alleged that the Trump administration ignored the concern of doctors in the US over the import of hydroxychloroquine from uninspected factories in India and Pakistan, and flooded the country with the unproven and potentially dangerous anti-malarial drug.

When fired, Rick Bright was the head of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a research agency within the HHS. He reported directly to Robert Kadlec, the assistant secretary of preparedness and response at the HHS.

The American scientist, in a complainted to the US Office of Special Counsel, alleged that top officials of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) repeatedly ignored his messages and that of others over the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and medicines like hydroxychloroquine in particular.

In Bright's experience, drugs from uninspected factories can be contaminated or dosed improperly and this could obviously be dangerous to those who took the medication.

The Trump administration imported nearly five crore units of hydroxychloroquine which in March received Emergency Use Authorisation from the FDA.

The Trump administration, the complaint said, was not interested in hearing from Bright and his department or subject matter experts.

Bright and his FDA colleagues were also concerned about the quality and potential toxicity of the chloroquine supplies produced and shipped in from facilities in India and Pakistan that were not approved by the FDA and therefore, not approved to be used in the US marketplace.

United States President Donald Trump toured a new medical mask factory in Arizona on Tuesday -- but did not wear a face cover himself.

Trump took a rare trip out of Washington and visited a Honeywell International Inc factory making N95 face masks for healthcare workers. The facility is producing face masks for the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Trump wore safety goggles during the factory tour but did not wear a mask, even though production workers at the facility did and a sign was visible that read: "Attention: Face Mask Required in this Area. Thank You!"

His accomplices -- Honeywell Chief Executive Officer Darius Adamczyk, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and some other visiting dignitaries -- also did not wear masks.

Trump has so far declined to wear a face cover -- despite the federal government encouraging Americans since early April to wear masks to avoid spreading the virus even when not feeling any symptoms of COVID-19.

Vice President Mike Pence said on Sunday he erred in not wearing a face mask to the Mayo Clinic last month. His decision not to wear the mask had drawn widespread criticism.

The novel coronavirus is known to have infected more than 1.2 million people in the United States, including at least 71,000 who have died

Trump won Arizona in the 2016 election against Democratic presidential nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, but opinion polls show him currently trailing the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, in the Southwestern state.

A teenager in Japan has designed an iPhone software application that uses GPS so individuals can keep their own records of their whereabouts in their mobile phone, to help with contact tracing in people who have contracted the novel coronavirus.

Called Asiato, for "footprint," the app has been developed by 16-year-old Syu Kato. It keeps track of a phone's movements within a distance of 10 meters (33 feet) or more. An English version of the app is available free from the iPhone App Store.

The app works like a diary, but keeps track of locations. To protect privacy, the data is stored in the phone and is not automatically shared.

If a person discovers they have COVID-19, Asiato identifies where they've been in the past several weeks. They would need to reach out on their own to people they may have infected, or inform health authorities if asked.

Kato is a digital whiz, who famously designed a mathematics application to do division that gives the remainder as a number for the answer, not decimal points. While in sixth grade, he developed a program for writing book reports.

A new genetic analysis of the novel coronavirus shows it has been circulating in people since late last year, and must have spread extremely quickly after the first infection -- dispelling the speculation that said it was in circulation long before it was recognised.

The samples were taken from more than 7,600 patients around the world.

Researchers at the University College London Genetics, Britain also looked at mutations in the virus and found evidence of quick spread, but no evidence the virus is becoming more easily transmitted or more likely to cause serious disease.

They said the findings indicate that the virus first started infecting people at the end of last year, ruling out any scenario that assumes SARSCoV-2 may have been in circulation long before it was identified, and hence have already infected large proportions of the population.

A few doctors had earlier hoped the virus was circulating for many months and may have quietly infected many more people than has been reported. That would offer the hope that there might be some immunity already built up in some populations.

The first human cases of COVID-19 were reported in Wuhan, China, last December. The virus has since then infected as many as 3.5 million people across the world, and has killed over 2,50,000.

Punjab Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla`s campaign -- Ambassadors of Hope -- which was launched for the students to share their creativity during lockdown -- has created a world record as close to 1,05,898 school going children have shared their videos.

"The campaign created a world record as never in the past so many students participated in an online video competition concluded in eight days. Currently, Cebu City Commission, a government body of the Philippines, holds the record of the highest participation as they had got 43,157 participants in eight day-long online competition," said Singla on Wednesday.

Students from Ludhiana district have sent the most entries -- 16,084 -- followed by Amritsar 13,862, Sangrur 10,741, and Patiala 10,614. Apart from entries, the campaign also engaged around 2.5 crore people on social media platforms in eight days.

"The primary objective of engaging the students in constructive activity in the atmosphere of abject negativity has been achieved," an official statement quoted Singla as saying "It is heartening to see the response we have got from the children.

For me, every child is a winner as they have kept the Punjabi Virsa alive. Most of the entries are deeply-rooted in Punjabi ethos and culture. I am grateful to all the students, who shared innovative ideas through videos on just one call," added Singla.

The Minister said that they appreciate the spirit of students and efforts put in by their parents, teachers and school principals in guiding and motivating them.

"I and my team will go through every video and prepare a detailed report to announce the results in the next 20 days," he said.

Mink at two fur farms in the Netherlands have tested positive for coronavirus, adding to the list of animals known to be at risk of COVID-19.

According to BBC, officials in The Netherlands believe mink contracted the virus from farm workers a week ago, and the farms have since been put into quarantine.

It, however, is not surprising that Mink have contracted the virus. The list of mammal species infected during the 2003 SARS outbreak accounts for at least 16, including mink, palm civets, fruit bats, several species of horseshoe bat, red fox, wild boar, raccoon dog, and domestic cats and dogs.

It was reported last month that lions and tigers at a New York zoo had caught the disease from their keepers.

To this end, animal rights organisation Peta has written a letter to ministers calling for the farms to be shut down immediately.

"Allowing mink farms to maintain business as usual for nearly four more years - in the face of a global crisis stemming from animal exploitation - would be inexcusable from the perspective of both the risk posed to humans and the harm inflicted on the mink themselves," they wrote.

Animal protection charity Humane Society International, which campaigns for a global end to the fur trade, has warned of the risk in other countries too where tens of millions of mink, fox, raccoon dogs, chinchillas and rabbits are farmed.

Beijing's Army is indulging in aggressive behaviour in the South China Sea and the Chinese Communist Party has ramped up its disinformation campaign to try to shift the blame on coronavirus and burnish its image, US has claimed.

"While the Chinese Communist Party ramps up its disinformation campaign to try to shift blame and burnish its image, we continue to see aggressive behaviour by the PLA in the South China Sea, from threatening a Philippine Navy ship to sinking a Vietnamese fishing boat and intimidating other nations from engaging in offshore oil and gas development," Defense Secretary Mark Esper told reporters at a Pentagon news conference, on Tuesday.

The novel coronavirus that broke out in China's Wuhan in December, 2019 has infected more that 3.5 million in the world, and killed 2,50,000.

Last week, three US Navy warships conducted freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea to send a message to Beijing that America will continue to protect the freedom of navigation and commerce for all nations large and small.

Esper added China has not been transparent from the beginning on the coronavirus pandemic.

"If they had been more transparent, more open, upfront in terms of giving us access, the reporting, giving us access not to the people on the ground but to the virus they had so we could understand it, we would probably be in a far different place right now. But where we are now is this," Esper said.

China needs to allow the United States in to talk to early patients, Chinese researchers and scientists, and to have access, he added.

"Despite everything they did or, more importantly, failed to do, now they want to go out and say well, here's masks. We will give you masks, provide this, or provide that, we will provide you funding. Look at all the good things we are doing," he said.

"So there is a number of things they are doing to try and burnish their image. That is just two of them right there," he said.

The Chinese are also doing a lot of strong-arming behind the scenes, Esper said and referred to the war of words between China and Australia. He said he plans to talk to his Australian counterpart later in the day.

"All these activities are going on. It is straight from the Chinese playbook. Once again, it is just a little bit more obvious this time with what they are doing and how they are using a combination of compelling and coercion and everything else to try and shape the narrative and burnish the image of the Chinese Communist Party," Esper said.

A normal visit for United States President Donald Trump to Honeywell’s mask-making factory on Tuesday has hit massive headlines -- for two reasons.

The first, we had reported, was his choice of irony. Trump wore safety goggles, but did not wear a face cover in the dire times of coronavirus -- even though production workers at the facility did and a sign was visible that read: "Attention: Face Mask Required in this Area. Thank You!"

The second was the choice of music -- the Paul McCartney-penned “Live and Let Die,” as performed by Guns ‘N Roses, blared in the background as Trump walked through the factory.

A clip posted on YouTube by Reuters shows Trump walking through the Arizona facility without a mask to the song.

The background music for the tour also included Trump rally stalwarts such as Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.”

The song’s climactic lines blasted as a Honeywell representative explained to the president. Rose could be heard singing, “If this ever-changing world in which we live in / Makes you give in and cry / say live and let die.”

India is set to export about 1,000 tonnes of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for common pain reliever paracetamol -- used to cope with COVID-19 symptoms -- to Europe.

Europe has sought up to 800 tonnes of paracetamol APIs every month.

The Indian government in March put a hold on exports of several drugs including paracetamol to secure supplies for its people after the coronavirus outbreak disrupted the industry's supply chain globally.

To this end, Indian authorities have asked drugmakers to ensure the country is adequately stocked for up to four months of domestic requirements.

India has shipped 1.9 million tablets and other forms of paracetamol to 31 countries, the foreign ministry said late last month. Consignments of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and paracetamol were being sent to 87 countries on a commercial basis.

Europe is India's biggest buyer of paracetamol APIs and imports around 12,000 tonnes annually.

The novel coronavirus outbreak has killed more than a quarter of a million people and Europe has accounted for 57 people of the global death toll.

India has so far reported more than 49,000 cases of COVID-19. The outbreak has not shown any signs of slowing despite a severe lockdown that has confined its population of 1.3 billion to their homes since late March.

The Japanese government has been facing backlash from its people after it promoted a set of “new social behaviour” guidelines on Monday, as a state of emergency implemented to curb the spread of coronavirus was extended until May 31.

Speaking at a news conference, an expert panel said the rate of new cases was on the decline in Japan -- but emergency measures would remain in place and the new guidelines should become the norm, as an uptick in infections would overwhelm hospitals.

The new normal stressed the need to permanently adopt measures such as wearing face masks outside, keeping 2 meters (6.5 ft) between people, teleworking as much as possible, avoiding crowded spaces and washing hands regularly with soap in the long-term fight against the virus.

One new recommendation made on Monday for people eating in restaurants is to sit outside, side-by-side while keeping conversation to a minimum.

This set of advice left many people shocked. They took to the social media to comment that the new guidelines were obvious and that it was patronising to try to enforce them.

"I’m dumbfounded ... There are no other experts urging this kind of advice in the world -- just experts in Japan," said one Twitter user.

A section of Twitterverse seemed to concur with the guidelines.

"Wearing masks or eating alone isn’t expensive and it doesn’t infringe on human rights either,” the Twitter user said.

The Japanese government has said it would reevaluate the need to maintain the state of emergency on a weekly basis.

Scientists have developed an app that provides insights on COVID-19 hot spots, and the symptoms users must look out for, an advance that may aid public health officials in their efforts to contain the pandemic.

According to the study, published in the journal Science, the COVID Symptom Tracker app has already seen early usage by more than 2.5 million people in the US and the UK, generating valuable data for physicians, scientists, and public officials.

"The app collects daily information from individuals in the community about whether they feel well, and if not, their specific symptoms, and if they have been tested for COVID-19," said study senior author Andrew T Chan from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in the US.

The scientists said it may be useful as a planning tool to inform guidelines around self-isolation, identify regions in need of additional ventilators, expand hospital capacity, and provide real-time data to prepare for future outbreaks.

They said the app was launched in the UK on March 24, and became available in the US on March 29.

Since its launch, the study noted that the app has seen more than 3 million users.

"This work has led to the development of accurate models of COVID-19 infection rates in the absence of sufficient population testing," Chan said.

"For example, the UK government has acted upon these estimates by providing advanced notice to local health authorities about when to expect a surge of cases," he added.

Using results from the app, the scientists are also investigating risk factors for infection, as well as the effects of COVID-19 on patients' health.

Chan also pointed out that the app does not have any contact tracing function in contrast with software that is being rolled out in collaboration with Apple and Google.

"Our app is designed to be entirely voluntary so that they can share information about how they are feeling in a way that safeguards their privacy," he added.

The scientists are asking individuals, even those who are feeling well, to download the app and participate in this effort to provide information related to COVID-19.

An Indian-origin man in Singapore has been sentenced to seven months in prison for verbally abusing the police who were urging compliance with the measures enforced during the coronavirus lockdown.

Ravi Sinathamby Subramaniam, who prosecutors said continues to be a menace to the society due to his involvement in a long list of offences spanning decades, committed the offences over two days last month, reported Channel News Asia.

Ravi Subramaniam pleaded guilty to two charges of verbally abusing police and health officers, and a third charge of threatening to "break" the faces of three health officers.

Another five charges were taken into consideration for the sentencing.

The 53-year-old accused first went to a convenience store where he stood in the queue, holding an open can of beer and reeking of alcohol while complaining loudly about why the queue was not properly organised.

When the police spoke to him, he turned aggressive and spoke loudly to them, trying to leave and refusing to cooperate, drawing a crowd. He hurled abuses at the police and was arrested.

He reoffended four days later at a coffee shop. When approached by a health officer enforcing safe-distancing measures as he was wearing his face mask over his chin and not over his nose and mouth, Ravi turned aggressive.

He cursed at the officers, and threatened them of breaking their face.

The prosecution had pushed for at least 10 months' jail, saying that the case presents an important opportunity for this court to send a clear message that such conduct against frontline officers in the coronavirus fight will not be tolerated.

Ravi's crime records now show a trend of intimidating behaviour towards public servants, he said.

Ravi, who was unrepresented, apologised to the court, to the civil servant and to the government.

The judge also directed a session for Ravi to be given counselling for his underlying behaviour and for treatment plans to be formulated.

Italy claims that it has successfully developed a vaccine to contain the novel coronavirus.

The country has also said that the vaccine works on humans.

Italy, among the world’s hardest-hit countries in the coronavirus pandemic, allowed about 4.5 million people to return to work on Monday after nearly two months of lockdown.

As per the tests carried out at Rome's infectious-disease Spallanzani Hospital, the coronavirus vaccine has antibodies generated in mice that work on human cells.

Human tests are expected after this summer.

An Indian-American scientist-led team from the University of Missouri has identified four antiviral drugs, including remdesivir, to be effective in the treatment of COVID-19.

The study was published in the journal Pathogens.

Kamlendra Singh, an associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and his team used computer-aided drug design to examine the effectiveness of remdesivir, 5-fluorouracil, ribavirin and favipiravir in inhibiting the replication of the novel coronavirus causing COVID-19 -- or blocking, the coronavirus' RNA proteins from making genomic copies of the virus.

These antiviral drugs, if proven effective, have some limitations. The coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19, like all viruses, can mutate and develop resistance to antiviral drugs. Therefore, further testing in a laboratory setting and in patients is needed to better evaluate how the proposed treatments interact with the virus' RNA polymerase.

Meanwhile, the US is planning to begin treating some of the most seriously ill COVID-19 patients with the antiviral medication Remdesivir.

As of Tuesday, confirmed cases in the country has reached 1,180,634 with 68,934 deaths, according to the tally maintained by the Johns Hopkins University.
