It took more than 10 months for India to add the first 10 million cases and just four months to add the second 10 million - more than double the pace of infection, which is fast spreading.

In the last 24 hours, India has added another 350,000 cases, slightly less than Monday. However, it is hardly a figure that gives any relief.

India's active cases now represent 17 per cent of the total caseload with more than three million people currently positive and over 16 million patients who have recovered.

Everything about the AP variant is alarming as reports say the variant has already moved beyond Andhra Pradesh. It has been found in 20 to 30 per cent of the samples in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

The strain is said to be at least 15 times more virulent than the earlier ones, which means it spreads even faster. It has a shorter incubation period and the infection spreads much more rapidly within the human body.

Delhi reports 425 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours

India's health ministry said today that 3,390 new <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/consider-home-delivery-of-liquor-to-maintain-social-distancing-supreme-court-to-states-297422">coronavirus</a> cases were reported in the last 24 hours in the country.&nbsp;

"The recovery percentage is now 29.36%. Till now, 16,540 patients have been cured and 37,916 patients are under active medical supervision," India's health ministry official Lav Agrawal said.

The health ministry said that a revised list of red, orange and green zones will be circulated to the states soon after the analysis of data.

"In 29 districts no new cases have been detected in the last 21 days. In 36 districts, no new cases have been detected in the last 14 days," the health ministry official said, adding,"in 46 districts no new cases have been detected in the last 7 days."

The official said that in 216 districts nationwide no positive coronavirus cases were detected.

"Phase-II Open-Label Randomised Controlled Trial of ICMR has received the approval of the coronavirus national ethics committee. Under it, ICMR will conduct trial in 21 hospitals, to assess the safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma," the health ministry official added.

Meanwhile, the home ministry said that Railways has run 222 Shramik special trains for the movement of stranded persons with over 2.5 lakh people who have made use of the service.

Karnataka minister R Ashok said that 16 trains are ready to be sent to migrant workers.

"But consent is awaited from other state governments. Bihar has given one train permission every day. There is no fault of Karnataka," the state minister said.

As the virus continued to spread in the country, India's Border Security Force(BSF) said that 30 new coronavirus cases was detected among its personnel with six from&nbsp;Delhi and &nbsp;24 from Tripura.

Haryana on Thursday reported 18 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours with 329 cases in the state.

Karnataka reports 22 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours; Pune records 127 new cases

Brick walls that were erected by the Vellore district administration (Tamil Nadu) on the highways that led to Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, to restrict vehicle movement and thereby reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread have been removed following a controversy.&nbsp;

The wall was razed by an earthmover after the Chittoor Collector and Vellore collector had discussed the issue. Renuka, the revenue divisional officer from Chittoor district has also visited the site.&nbsp;

"I called the Vellore district collector regarding the construction of the wall at the border, he said that they have stopped the cross-border transport as per government order. He also added that transportation has not been completely blocked and that in case of emergencies they are allowing via an alternative route“, Chittoor District Collector, Dr. Narayan Bharat Gupta said.&nbsp;

The district administration in Vellore is said to have built the walls, as per the instructions from the Tamil Nadu government. The walls that were raised Synagunda and Ponnai near the border were made of hollow bricks and were meant to keep in check the entry of migrant workers who enter without valid permission.

While the main highways do have checkpoints to monitor the entry and exit of people, there are lesser known routes that are frequented by locals, which could be used to cross the borders.&nbsp;

According to officials, out of the six check posts only ones at Ponnai and Synagunda had been blocked, whereas the routes via Paththalapalli, Paradarami, Christian pet and Serkadu were left open. While the vehicles that usually ply the blocked routes had been diverted in order to regulate and norrow-down the traffic movement.

Since the start of the nationwide lockdown on March 25, cross-border travel has been suspended, unless it is for exceptional, emergency cases, as permitted by the state governments.&nbsp;

The border roads that were earlier blocked were considered important routes for those living in the region. It offered a lifeline for many who sought treatment at the famous Christian Medical College in Vellore. Likewise, there was a sentimental value attached to the roads as the people from Tamil Nadu used to take these roads to the travel across the border to the hill shrine in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
