Cornell University has agreed to initiate an independent investigation into ex-female student's allegations. It was confirmed by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. This comes after Hochul said that the allegations are serious and also raises questions about Cornell campus culture. He also asked what steps is the university taking to protect the students. The student is identified as Jane Doe. She revealed that an internal Title IX investigation was launched in January 2025, and at least 12 hearings followed. But the university’s only expelled two out of the seven accused. The Independent also saw court documents showing that around November 8, 2024, temporary suspensions were issued for several male students who “were afforded the opportunity to mitigate their conduct by submitting essays to CORNELL.” The remaining students received lesser administrative sanctions, such as temporary suspensions, required workshops or essay-writing assignments. Also Read: LPU suspend classes, postpones exams as violence escalates over rape claims: What's happening "I wanted to make sure they knew how important this was, and they absolutely agreed. Ever wondered about the amount of microplastics which you consume in a month. Well according to a study by Cornell University, Southeast Asia tops the global intake of microplastics with Indonesians the top consumers of microplastic. Watch in for more details!

In a miraculous recovery for the books, a puppy's jaw regrew spontaneously after it was removed due to cancer. This marks the first of its kind incident for dogs of any age or breed. However, as per the Cornell website, this phenomenon has been reported in children.

A miracle

Tyson, a three-month-old puppy of French bulldog breed, was brought to Cornell's Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service for a cleft palate surgery when the primary veterinarian noticed a cancerous tumour on the dog's jaw.

In a statement, the dentistry and oral surgery resident Alexandra Wright, D.V.M., who led Tyson's care team, detailed that there was an oral papillary squamous cell carcinoma, which he said is a "malignant cancer in dogs."

"Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the second-most common malignant oral tumour in dogs, and this papillary subtype has previously been reported in young dogs," he said.

Wright, along with co-authors Dr Nadine Fiani, associate clinical professor and section chief, and Dr Santiago Peralta, associate professor in the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service, has published a report on this case in Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Most of the puppy's lower left mandible had to be removed to remove the tumour. This, as per the veterinarians, meant Tyson would live a life without a fully functioning lower jaw.

The puppy's owners were sceptical about putting him through the surgery but chose to "give him a chance and continue with surgery."

"We had no idea his jaw would grow back!" they said.

How the miracle happened

According to Cornell College of Veterinary Science's website, the miraculous recovery was likely due to the Periosteum preserved during the surgery. Furthermore, the detection of cancer at an early age also helped the case.

The periosteum contains blood vessels and nerves that support the bone and are also crucial to the growth of the original mandibles.

Wright speculates that "this was likely imperative to the regeneration of new bone."

However, the precise reason remains a mystery. Tyson's new mandible as per the report is "nearly as functional as the original, though it is technically considered abnormal because it no longer has certain features. For instance, there is no mandibular canal, where major blood vessels and nerves typically reside, and there are no teeth."

Jewish students at Cornell University received anti-Semitic death threats online over the weekend, prompting the staff to send police to guard them.

According to the president of the university, Martha E Pollack, several hate messages were posted on a website not affiliated with the university on Sunday, encouraging many to harm Jews in the school.

“A series of horrendous, antisemitic messages threatening violence to our Jewish community and specifically naming 104 West— the home of the Center for Jewish Living — was posted on a website unaffiliated with Cornell,” Pollack said in a statement.

The messages, which have now been deleted, included threats to shoot Jewish students at the 104 West building, which houses their kosher dining hall, the school’s student newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun, reported.

Though the campus authorities didn’t initiate any lockdown procedures or close down the dining hall, Cornell Hillel, a Jewish campus organisation, called on the students and staff to avoid the building “in an abundance of caution.”

Online posts called for killing Jews

The threats come in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war which has fuelled tensions on college campuses across the US.

Many institutions such as Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania saw students protesting and calling for a ceasefire even as staff grappled to tame the fervent agitation.

According to CNN, some instructions are also facing backlash from influential donors demanding colleges take a clearer stance on the conflict.

On Monday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul visited Cornell’s Center for Jewish Living where he vowed to ensure the safety of the Jewish community and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Israel-Hamas war: Jewish students at Cornell University receive death threats, police deployed for safety

An insect-sized robot has been developed by the prestigious Cornell University that can lift 22 times its body weight. According to a report by the Cornell Chronicle on Monday (September 18), the robot was developed by materials engineer Robert Shepherd at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, with his PhD student Cameron Aubin and their colleagues.

The robot is just over an inch long and weighs the equivalent of one and a half paper clips. It has been 3D-printed with a flame-resistant resin. The report said that the body contains a pair of separated combustion chambers that lead to the four actuators, which serve as the feet.

Each actuator is a hollow cylinder capped with a piece of silicone rubber, like a drum skin, on the bottom. "When offboard electronics are used to create a spark in the combustion chambers, premixed methane, and oxygen are ignited, the combustion reaction inflates the drum skin, and the robot pops up into the air," the report added.

Being powered by combustion allows this robot to do a lot of things that robots at this scale haven’t been able to do at this point, Cameron Aubin said.

"It’s an incredible jumper for its size. It’s also really fast on the ground. All of that is due to the force density and the power density of these fuel-driven actuators,” Aubin added.

The report said that the actuator design also enables a high degree of control. By turning a knob, the operator can adjust the speed and frequency of sparking, or vary the fuel feed in real-time, triggering a dynamic range of responses.

“Everybody points to these insect-scale robots as being things that could be used for search and rescue, exploration, environmental monitoring, surveillance, navigation in austere environments,” Aubin said.

While the team has yet to create a fully untethered model – the researcher said they were halfway there – the current iteration “absolutely throttles the competition, in terms of their force output.”

A 20-year-old Indian-origin Cornell University student was found dead here after going missing this week. Aalaap Narasipura, a senior electrical engineering student at Cornell's College of Engineering was reported missing since Wednesday. Cornell University Police, working with the New York State Police, the Ithaca Police Department and the Ithaca Fire Department, recovered his body yesterday from Fall Creek, a short distance upstream from Ithaca Falls. Cornell University Police confirmed Narasipura's identity. Police said the circumstances of Narasipura's death are still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected. No other information is available at this time. Police had searched gorges and adjacent natural areas in Ithaca. Earlier authorities had issued an advisory describing Narasipura as a dark-skinned male, 5-feet-9 inches tall. He was last seen in the early morning of May 17 on Cornell's campus, and was wearing shorts and a flannel shirt with bright blue socks and leather sandals. Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi expressed "profound sadness" at the death of Narasipura. He described Narasipura as an "ambitious student" who was scheduled to graduate early this December. "He was active on the Ultimate Frisbee team, enjoyed taking photos, and planned to continue at Cornell to pursue a Master of Engineering degree," he said in a statement. (PTI)
