Britain's ruling Conservatives on Friday (July 21) won former prime minister Boris Johnson's old seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip as Rishi Sunak avoided a wipe-out for his party in the by-elections seen as a test for his premiership. The vote was a result of the former PM standing down as an MP last month.&nbsp;

The by-election came amid public anger over a range of issues, with the expansion of a tax on polluting vehicles among them.&nbsp;

Sunak was all set for a triple blow after voters went to the polls in three constituencies currently held by his party on Thursday.&nbsp;

However, winning Johnson's former seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip by 13,965 votes to 13,470 came as an unexpected boost for Sunak. It delivered a blow to Labour leader Keir Starmer and London's Labour mayor Sadiq Khan.&nbsp;

Victorious candidate Steve Tuckwell said, "The recognition that Boris Johnson is not on the ballot paper has been very clear."&nbsp;

"What we have had is people asking what will be the impact of the ULEZ," he said, referring to London Mayor Sadiq Khan's pollution tax.&nbsp;

<h2>Labour's historic result&nbsp;</h2>

Labour achieved a historic result by winning Selby and Ainsty despite the Tories having a majority of more than 20,000 votes.&nbsp;The party said overturning the majority of 20,137 from the last general election marks the biggest majority the party has overturned at a by-election since World War II.&nbsp;

The Conservatives also suffered a crushing defeat in the seat of Somerton and Frome, where their 19,000 majority turned into a 11,000 deficit as the Liberal Democrats won by 21,187 to 10,179.&nbsp;

Lib Dem winner Sarah Dyke hailed a "stunning and historic victory" during her speech. She took aim at the "woeful government".

"We have been let down and taken for granted. This government is too busy being a circus of chaos — enough is enough," she said.

Starmer said that "this is a historic result" after the Selby and Ainsty victory.&nbsp;

Starmer said, "This is a historic result that shows that people are looking at Labour and seeing a changed party that is focused entirely on the priorities of working people with an ambitious, practical plan to deliver."&nbsp;

"Keir Mather will be a fantastic MP who will deliver the fresh start Selby and Ainsty deserve," he added.&nbsp;

"It is clear just how powerful the demand for change is. Voters put their trust in us – many for the first time. After 13 years of Tory chaos, only Labour can give the country its hope, its optimism and its future back," he further said.&nbsp;

The Foreign Press Association of UK-based overseas media said the Conservative Party had failed to give any evidence of journalists skipping the event on such a scale. The association has argued that wider principles were at stake.

"In fact, this decision sets a dangerous precedent for countries all over the world who will use this decision to justify financial and other barriers to media scrutiny of the political process," it said.

"We, therefore, call upon the Tory party conference organisers to scrap or refund the charges and allow fair and free reporting for all."

The Conservative Party is in the headlines because of&nbsp;former PM&nbsp;Boris Johnson who resigned from his parliamentary seat recently.

On Monday (June 19), the party voted overwhelmingly to remove Johnson's parliamentary pass. The parliament approved a report that found that the former PM lied to the legislature about 'Partygate', the parties held at the official residence when rest of the Britain was under strict lockdown.

This comes a day after Hong Kong-born Canadian lawmaker, Jenny Kwan, said she was also targeted&nbsp;by Beijing for her human rights activism.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Canada moved to expel Toronto-based Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei after an intelligence report accused him of trying to target a Canadian lawmaker over his support for the Uyghur Muslim minority in China.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the former opposition leader claim?</h2>

The claim follows a briefing by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), on Friday. O’Toole, a current Member of Parliament (MP), had lost the 2021 election to incumbent Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.&nbsp;

The Canadian MP said that the spy agency had confirmed his suspicions that he and his parliamentary caucus members were the “target of a Chinese orchestrated campaign of disinformation and voter suppression in the run-up to and during the 2021 general election.”

He added, “Each of these threats was intended to discredit me, promote false narratives about my policies, and severely obstruct my work as a member of Parliament and as leader of the official opposition.”&nbsp;

Kwan, who is a New Democrat MP, said that the CSIS also informed her that she was part of Beijing’s foreign interference campaign and “would continue to be a target.” However, the Canadian lawmaker said that she would “not be intimidated” or “silenced in any way.”&nbsp;

She also claimed that it was her activism related to human rights in Hong Kong that pushed China to impose&nbsp;its National Security Law in the city, as well as her support for China’s Uyghur Muslim minority community that made her a target.

“Whoever is trying to put pressure on me in whatever way they are trying to do it, they will not succeed,” said Kwan.

O’Toole believes&nbsp;it was his criticism of human rights abuses in China as well as discouraging the use of Huawei technology in Canada’s 5G network which prompted Beijing to retaliate.&nbsp;

<h2>Trudeau&nbsp;government under pressure</h2>

There has been mounting pressure on the Canadian government which has also faced criticism for not passing the intelligence about Chinese meddling to the parliament and its members&nbsp;earlier.&nbsp;The government and its senior advisers are “being willfully blind to attacks on our parliamentary democracy,” said Canadian MP&nbsp;O’Toole.&nbsp;

The government faced similar criticism from Conservative MP Michael Chong, who&nbsp;as per a media&nbsp;report was&nbsp;targeted by China for his staunch support of Uyghur rights. As per the Canadian intelligence report from 2021 quoted by the country’s Globe and Mail newspaper, Beijing requested details about Chong and his family.&nbsp;

In a supposed intimidation effort to make “an example” and also to “deter others from taking an anti-PRC position,” the paper reported. Chong also criticised Trudeau’s government for inaction, while the Canadian PM said he too found out about the intelligence report from the newspaper and blamed the spy agency for not passing on the information to him on time.

However, the report did lead to the ouster of&nbsp;Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei who was&nbsp;accused of trying to target Chong.&nbsp;

The official figures released on Thursday by the government show that a record 606,000 people migrated to the UK in 2022. This rise has been attributed to a “series of unprecedented world events” which took place last year including&nbsp;the ease in restrictions after the COVID-19 pandemic, as per the director of the centre for international migration at the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Jay Lindop.&nbsp;

Immigration was also one of the key issues related to the 2016 Brexit referendum, where the Conservative government in the UK has said that leaving the EU and ending the free movement of people between the 27-nation bloc and Britain could take control of its borders back.&nbsp;

In an interview with Sky News, Stephen Kinnock, the shadow immigration minister and Labour MP, said “all the indications are that the government has completely lost control of our immigration system”. This comes as the Labour Party has refused to give a number for the migration cap and said doing so would make the party a “hostage to fortune”.&nbsp;

He added, “I don't think you need to have specific numbers… but you need to have a clear commitment to getting numbers down,” as quoted by Sky News. He also went on to blame the Tory government for not creating enough opportunities for the local workforce which has forced employers to reach for bringing overseas migrant labour into the country.&nbsp; 
 
“This is about balance, of course we need immigration in our country, but we need to balance that against maximising opportunities for local people,” the Labour MP told Sky News.&nbsp;

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak sacked Nadhim Zahawi as chairman of the Conservative Party on Sunday. Zahawi had come under fire for his tax arrangements. In a letter, Sunak wrote it is “clear that there has been a serious breach of the Ministerial Code," reported CNN.&nbsp; Nadhim Zahawi was being investigated to find out whether he violated the ministerial code at the time of settling a £4.8 million HM Revenue &amp; Customs (HMRC) dispute. There were claims that&nbsp;Zahawi had paid a penalty as part of this settlement with tax officials and that this dispute was not declared with tax authorities when he joined the government.

This latest development seems like Sunak has finally given in to the mounting pressure for action against Zahawi from the opposition. Sunak had been avoiding sacking Zahawi till now and had instead asked his new ethics adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, to evaluate whether the HMRC settlement was a Ministerial Code breach.&nbsp;

In a letter written by Sir Laurie to British prime minister Sunak on Sunday morning, the ethics adviser concluded that Zahawi had "shown insufficient regard for the general principles of the Ministerial Code." The letter added that he did not fulfil the requirements of being an "honest, open and exemplary leader".

Under pressure from most quarters for her tax-cut plans that have sent the economy into a downward spiral, UK Prime Minister Liz Truss vowed&nbsp;she will not cut public spending to make good on her plans on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Speaking for the first time in the&nbsp;House of Commons since the infamous mini-budget speech, Truss doubled down on her tax-cut plans while insisting that public spending will not be curtailed.&nbsp;

"Absolutely. What we will make sure is that over the medium term the debt is falling. But we will do that not by cutting public spending but by making sure we spend public money well," said Truss, adding that her policies would "protect our economy".

Opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer, however, questioned the government's 'borrowing spree' which has left the currency, bond and other markets spooked.&nbsp;

The Labour leader called for a complete reversal of the $45 billion plan. Incidentally, the Truss government has not yet outlined the plan regarding how it will raise the money.

Chancellor&nbsp;Kwasi Kwarteng has given October 31 as the deadline to outline the economic plan to stimulate growth.&nbsp;

While Truss denies that public spending will not be cut, some media reports have suggested that she will be&nbsp;uprating welfare payments in line with earnings rather than inflation, which experts believe is another ploy to cut public spending.&nbsp;

Plans to oust Truss have been discussed amongst the MPs if she continues to persist with her 'hara-kiri' policy.&nbsp;Truss, under her largely unfunded&nbsp;financial tax cut plan, is looking to find avenues to save money for the exchequer.

Under her proposed plan, the benefits will rise in line with earnings which comes to around 5.5 per cent rather than in correspondence with the inflation percentage which stood at 10 per cent in the month of September.&nbsp;

Research has shown that if Truss goes through with her plan, as many as 450,000 could be pushed into poverty.

Opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer, however, questioned the government's 'borrowing spree' which has left the currency, bond and other markets spooked. The Labour leader called for a complete reversal of the $45 billion plan. Incidentally, the Truss government has not yet outlined the plan regarding how it will raise the money.
