Cold wave grips Delhi, air quality plummets to 'poor'

Rains over the last few days have washed away big pollutants in the national capital, contributing to a slight improvement in its Air Quality Index, which reached "moderate" levels on Saturday.

"The overall air quality over Delhi is moderate, purely attributed to rainfall. With overall Air Quality Index on Saturday recorded at 211 in the capital," the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) said.&nbsp;

The respite will not likely to stay for a long time as air quality is expected to deteriorate slowly due to stable weather conditions where low wind speeds with cooler temperature play a dominant role.

"The AQI is likely to deteriorate to poor for the next two days and may cross very poor by Monday possibility of moderate fog to continue," stated SAFAR.

On Saturday, the level of major pollutants in the air has improved significantly with particulate matter 10 (PM 10) plummeted to 118 from 154, while Particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) recorded at 58 as compared to 93 recorded yesterday.

In the coming few days, the pollutants level in the Delhi`s air is likely to escalate but will remain in "moderate" to "satisfactory" level.

Temperatures in the various part of North India is also likely to drop in the coming days.

"The cold to severe cold wave conditions at isolated pockets are also likely to re-appear over parts of northwest India during end of January. Above normal minimum temperatures are likely over parts of northeast India and south peninsula," the IMD said in its weekly weather forecast &nbsp;

A group of young boys and girls in Jammu and Kashmir have turned a wall into 'Wall of Kindness' where people can hang their warm clothes for those in need.&nbsp;

Taking a cue from philanthropists in Iran and Turkey, the aim of the project is to provide relief to needy people of the state in the bone-chilling winters.

The sub-zero temperature in the mountainous state has frozen almost everything but this initiative is spreading warmth. The 'Wall of Kindness'&nbsp;is helping the poor and needy to survive in the biting cold winter.

Situated at the British-era boulevard, the wall has been painted by a non-governmental organisation where people can hang their clothes without being noticed.&nbsp;In the valley, many people have come forward with their clothes to help the needy in the freezing cold. State administration has also helped these people in getting the desired spaces for the wall.&nbsp;

These volunteers now aim to expand the project to other areas as well. They say that they are already in the process of identifying spots where similar walls could be started. The move is being hailed by several people in the state.

A local resident said, "This is a very good step. This will help people in minus temperature, poor people will be benefited from this move. This has happened in foreign countries as well, I am happy that it has come to Kashmir, I urge people to donate extra clothes."

The initiative was initially started for the homeless people of Mashhad in Iran. Soon the practice spread throughout the country with a motto 'leave if you do not need'. Since then, the movement has spread to many other countries including China, Pakistan and Italy.&nbsp;

Scores of passengers were stranded as nearly 15 trains were delayed due to thick fog across the national capital on Saturday.

According to the official data, most of the trains were rescheduled after getting delayed for at least by two hours.

The trains Purushottam Express, Mahabodhi Express, and Kaifiyat Express were delayed by three hours each. While Vikramshila Express, Jaynagar Anand Vihar Garib Rath Express, Kashi Vishwanath Express were running late by five hours, four hours and three hours respectively due to dense fog in Delhi.

Earlier, the Railways had stated that it has started using Fog Pass Device (Fog Pilot Assistance System) or FSD, which is GPS-enabled and can continuously calculate the distance of the train in relation to the next landmark, enabling drivers to know when exactly a signal is approaching.

It has installed as many as 4,920 such devices in the most fog-affected railway zones - northern, north-central, north-eastern and north-western.

The humidity in the region will be oscillating between 60 per cent and 65 per cent with wind speed of 10 km/hr.

In the coming days as well, the same trend will continue and as per the experts, the minimum temperature can even go below 5-degree Celsius.

With the onset of Chillai Kalan, Jammu and Kashmir`s Srinagar recorded minus 7.7 degrees on Friday which was the lowest minimum in a span of 28 years.

As the dense fog and cold wave conditions continued to engulf the national capital, several flights and trains coming in and departing from Delhi were delayed on Friday morning causing inconvenience to the passengers.
