<p>The National Meteorological Centre (NMC) renewed its orange alert – the highest in the country’s three-tier system – as average daily temperatures or minimum temperatures in most parts of southern China are expected to drop by six to 12 degrees Celsius by Friday (Feb 23).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Chinese meteorological officials also warned that some regions including Guizhou, Hunan, Guangxi and Jiangxi will be witnessing a temperature drop of more than 20 degrees Celsius, reported the state news agency Xinhua.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The news agency said that the NMC has called on local governments to take precautions against the cold weather, asked people to stay warm, and “called for necessary measures to protect crops and aquatic products.”</p>

<h2><strong>Heavy snowfall in Beijing</strong></h2>

<p>The higher-than-expected snowfall prompted officials in the Chinese capital to close some highways as temperatures hovered around freezing point on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Beijing also witnessed slow traffic on the highways while snow-covered pavements proved treacherous for commuters and cyclists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I feel like the few days after the snow are a bit inconvenient because the road is kind of slippery and drivers are not that considerate,” Beijing resident Kylie Chen, 23, told Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although she liked seeing the snow, it complicated her work commute, as she had to walk on sludgy roads, the 23-year-old added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is recommended that residents...stagger their travel, use public buses and subways, drive their own cars slowly and pay attention to safety,” the city government said in a statement on Tuesday evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Delhi will continue to shiver as mercury will drop further over the New Year’s weekend, the weather department said on Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a cold-day alert for the national capital on Friday, predicting “dense to very dense fog” for the next two days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Cold-day conditions are very likely in some to many parts of Delhi on December 30 and 31," the IMD said.</p>

<p>On December 30, the minimum temperature&nbsp;in various parts of Delhi was&nbsp;recorded around 11 degrees Celsius. In Safdarjung, the minimum temperature was 11.8 degrees Celsius, in Palam it was 12 degrees Celsius and in the Ridge area it went as low as 11 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Along with the national capital, many cities of northern India woke up to foggy weather with drastically reduced visibility.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Patiala, Lucknow and Prayagraj, the visibility dropped to 25 metres while in Amritsar there remained zero visibility.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The average air quality declined to 381 and fell in the category of "very poor" on the Air Quality Index.&nbsp;The minimum temperature in the national capital fell to 7 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature stood at 24 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>As per the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) air bulletin, 441 AQI was recorded at Anand Vihar, while AQI was 327 in Lodhi Road in central Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the IGI airport, air quality remained at 368. Meanwhile, an AQI of 336 and 363 was recorded by Ghaziabad and Noida, respectively. As per the forecast, the air quality is likely to deteriorate further in the next week.</p>

<p>North India may shiver in another intense cold wave from Saturday as temperatures are set to dip -4 degrees Celsius, according to the predictions of a weather expert on Thursday.&nbsp; Founder of Live Weather of India, an online weather platform, Navdeep Dahiya warned that the cold wave will peak at its ‘extreme’ between January 16 and 18, as he tweeted, “Never seen temperature ensemble going this low in a prediction model so far in my career.”</p>

<p>Dahiya said, "Don't know how to put this up but upcoming spell of cold wave in India look really extreme during January 14-19 with peak on 16-18th... Freezing -4°c to +2°c in plains, Wow!"</p>

<p>"Still have three days, with minor +/- this is going to happen. Fog will play crucial role in moderating night temperatures... but if (it) lasts long single-digit maximum temperatures will be there. Very interesting days ahead..." he added.</p>

<p>He further warned, "January 2023 can be historically coldest - maybe for the 21st century so far?"</p>

<p>This winter, India’s north and north-western parts have been facing dense fog and bone-chilling winters, with temperatures dipping to 1.9 degrees Celsius as recorded at Safdarjung weather station of New Delhi this week.</p>

<p>However, the national capital got some respite after a minimum temperature was recorded at 9.3 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung.</p>
