China proposes ban on clothing that 'hurt nation's feelings', and it's confusing everyone

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), reacting to the viral video of a scantily-clad woman travelling in the Delhi Metro on Monday, said that although it expects the commuters to follow the social etiquette which is acceptable in society, the choice of clothes they wear is a personal issue.

The video of a female commuter was shared multiple times on social media platforms in the past few days and received a lot of comments from users on her clothing.

In a statement, DMRC corporate communications' principal executive director Anuj Dayal said, “DMRC expects commuters to follow all social etiquette and protocols… Commuters should not indulge in any activity or wear any attire which could offend sensibilities of fellow passengers.”

“Delhi Metro is also governed by the same rules which are applicable in the city. Just like in public places, decency is expected in the Metro as well. In case such an offence is reported, there is a provision for a fine under Operation and Maintenance Act, 2002,” he said.

He said that no such incident was brought by anyone to his notice. “First of all, it is not verified whether the woman was travelling in the Delhi Metro. Over 60 lakh passengers commute daily and it’s not possible to track her,” Dayal said.

“We appeal to all our passengers to kindly maintain decorum while travelling in a public transport system like the Metro. However, issues such as the choice of clothing while travelling is a personal issue and passengers are expected to self-regulate their conduct in a responsible manner,” he added.

Haupert bought the vintage jeans with Zip Stevenson, owner of Los Angeles-based vintage clothing company Denim Doctors.&nbsp; &nbsp;

While Haupert contributed 90 per cent of the winning bid, the remaining 10 will be put up by Stevenson.&nbsp;

Haupert said he relied on Stevenson’s expertise, saying, “He’s seen everything under the sun. I trust him to confirm that they are an authentic pair from the 1880s.”&nbsp;

Both are now planning to sell the jeans, with offers not anything less than $150,000.&nbsp;

The jeans were first discovered several years ago by Michael Harris, a self-described denim archaeologist, in an abandoned mineshaft in the American West.&nbsp;

Even though the pants are two centuries old, they appeared intact, barring a few holes and splitters. They come with a tagline “Made by White labor” on the back pocket, reflecting America’s complicated history. &nbsp;

It is said that Levis added the phrase on its products after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was passed, barring all Chinese labourers to the US for 10 years, even though they were very much part of the American economy.&nbsp;

According to the company’s statement, they adopted this strategy to improve sales. But a few years later they scrapped it.&nbsp;

“We thought it would improve sales and align with the views of consumers at the time."&nbsp;

"This continued into the 1890s when we reversed our policy," company officials said.&nbsp;
