Virat Kohli went past Sachin Tendulkar's ODI tally (49) to become the batter with most tons in the shortest format during the 2023 World Cup at home, in early November. At present, the 35-year-old has 80 international tons and is only 20 away from equalling Tendulkar's tally (100 -- most ever by any batter). While many believe Kohli has a chance to equal and eventually go past his idol's tally, former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd is fully confident of the Indian star batter bettering Tendulkar's record.

"I do not know about the period, but he is young enough, and I am sure that the way he is playing he can achieve anything he wants to achieve, and it would be something to be quite happy to achieve," Lloyd, who led West Indies to two successive ODI WC triumphs in 1975 and 1979, said during an event in Kolkata.

At 35, Kohli remains one of the fittest cricketers in world cricket. He is an active player for India across all formats, having returned to the T20I setup in early January after 14 months, and has plenty of big assignments coming up where he can rake in a plethora of runs.

Virat Kohli can break many more records of Sachin Tendulkar, feels West Indies legend Clive Lloyd

Indian captain Virat Kohli will be looking to end the unusual century drought and surpass former Australia captain Ricky Ponting to create a world record when he steps out to bat in the upcoming fourth Test against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The prolific India batsman has not scored a century since November 2019, where he smashed a ton against Bangladesh in a Day/Night Test at the Motera Stadium. Despite scoring two half-centuries in the series, Kohli has failed to convert them into hundreds yet.

If Virat scores a century at Motera, the 32-year-old will overtake former Aussie legend Ricky Ponting in the list of captains with most international hundreds. Both batting stalwarts are tied at the top position in the list with 41 centuries to their name.

However, along with this, Virat is also set to equal MS Dhoni's record most matches as captain of the Indian team in Tests when he takes on the visitors on fourth and final Test match.

The batting great is also 17 runs away from 12,000 international runs as captain, a feat achieved only by Australia's Ricky Ponting and South Africa's Graeme Smith before him. As a skipper, Australia's Ponting scored 15,440 runs, whereas Graeme Smith got 14,878 runs.

Another record that skipper Kohli will equal if Team India goes on to win the match is of Clive Lloyd, who led West Indies to 36 Test wins. He would go joint-fourth on the list of Test captains with the most wins if he leads India to victory in the fourth Test.

From MS Dhoni to Clive Lloyd: Records that Virat Kohli could achieve in the fourth Test

West Indies great Clive Lloyd believes Australia and India are the "standout" teams at the World Cup but has urged Virat Kohli's side to boost their batting if they are to dethrone the reigning champions.

Australia, whose only loss at the tournament so far has come against India, are already through to the semi-finals.

India will be assured of joining them if they beat Bangladesh on Tuesday and the two-time former champions are likely to get through to the knockout stage in any event.

Lloyd, the West Indies' captain when they won the first two men's World Cups in 1975 and 1979, has been impressed by Australia and India.

"They have been the two standout teams for me at this World Cup," said Lloyd in an ICC column published on Tuesday.

"They have understood the conditions better than any of the others," he said.

But Lloyd said India's 31-run defeat by England at Edgbaston on Sunday had exposed a weakness in Kohli's team.

"England played the right kind of game against them by attacking the spinners and they need to strengthen their batting lower down the order," said Lloyd.

Lloyd, now 74, was one of the original powerful shotmakers, which are now commonplace in one-day cricket.

The former West Indies skipper has tipped Australia left-hander Alex Carey, who scored 71 in the win against New Zealand, as a potential star of the tournament.

"Carey was a relative unknown beforehand but he bats with such maturity," he said. "He has the freedom to attack but also the technical skills needed to find the boundary,'' Lloyd said.

"He is a bolter and I have loved watching him play," he added.

The West Indies only have pride left to play for in their final group match against Afghanistan, with Jason Holder's men out of the running for a place in the semi-finals.

But Lloyd said it was "far from doom or gloom" for his old side, citing Nicholas Pooran's maiden ODI century in Monday's narrow defeat by Sri Lanka as a cause for optimism.

"He has done very well in this tournament and is someone we can really build around going forward," said Lloyd.

"He has a lot of things to learn but the raw ingredients are there for him to go on and become a fine player for the West Indies over the next few years," Lloyd added.

World Cup: India and Australia are 'standout' teams, says Clive Lloyd

Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth says Virat Kohli side's are having a demoralising effect on their World Cup opponents.

India beat Pakistan by 89 runs via DLS method in Manchester on Sunday to extend their blistering start to the World Cup.

Two-time champions India, among the favourites to lift the World Cup along with England and Australia, have three wins and a no result from their four matches and look set for a semi-final place.

Srikkanth has been impressed by India's form and claims their powerful displays are torturing opponents in the same way the great West Indies' team of the 1970s used to have teams beaten mentally before the match even started.

"It is a little like England, at the moment everything seems to be going right (for India) and the fans should be very happy," Srikkanth said.

"This is starting to feel a little like the West Indian teams of the 1970s, where the opposition would start the game with a psychological disadvantage.

"Teams are worried about facing India and how they will cope with them, which immediately puts them on the back foot."

India underlined their current class against Pakistan on Sunday, with opener Rohit Sharma leading the charge with 140 in their total of 336-5.

'Responsible Rahul'

Pakistan could only manage 212-6 while chasing a revised target of 302 in 40 overs to go down without a fight.

"It felt like there was more pressure on Pakistan, who had built this up to be a huge game, whereas India and Rohit, in particular, were able to treat it like any other match," Srikkanth said.

"That is vital in an ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. You cannot put too much pressure on yourself because of who the opposition is."

Sharma's 136-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who scored a measured 57 after being slotted in as opener in place of the injured Shikhar Dhawan, stood out in the big win.

Srikkanth said the half-century from Rahul, who helped see off a threatening opening spell from paceman Mohammad Amir, should not be underestimated.

"Everyone knows how good a batsman Rohit Sharma is but for me the more important innings against Pakistan was from KL Rahul," Srikkanth said.

"Going into the game, the biggest question mark about this India team was how they would cope without Shikhar Dhawan (who remains with the squad under medical observation).

"The fact the top three all got runs, that Sharma and Rahul put on more than a hundred for the first wicket and that Virat Kohli got more runs, is huge for India going forward in the tournament."

Kohli made 77 off 65 deliveries, his innings laced with seven boundaries before being caught behind off Amir.

Carlos Brathwaite sees himself as a versatile all-rounder, saying he is ready to perform whatever role is required in the ICC Men`s Cricket World Cup.

"When chosen, my skillset suits bowling very tight in the middle, offering some support at the death and then with the bat picking up the slack. If I need to come in the last three or four overs to give us a boost to the total then fine... or the odd game where I can come in and play a longer knock, so I think it`s about working on all facets of my game so my versatility makes me an asset that can be chosen at any point during the tournament," Cricket West Indies (CWI) quoted Brathwaite, as saying.

The tall right-hander batted well last week when he scored 60 off 64 balls with five fours and three sixes against Australia in an unofficial pre-tournament fixture at the Nursery Ground.

"It`s another challenge and whatever situation presents itself is for me to use my versatility again and to adapt to it. We may need another knock like against Australia or we may need a knock where they only have three overs and I`m supporting one of the batters that are in, so it`s another good challenge for the team and puts us one step closer to the ultimate goal which is winning the tournament," he continued.

West Indies won the World Cup on two occasions under the leadership of Clive Lloyd - the first edition in 1975 when they beat Australia and again in 1979 when they beat England. The tournament will be played in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14. West Indies open their campaign on May 31 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
