Martin Scorsese unveiled the first footage from his film Killers of the Flower Moon&nbsp;Thursday at CinemaCon, where his lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio and pop superstar Rihanna were among the surprise guests.

Dark Western Killers&nbsp;is Scorsese's sixth movie with DiCaprio, and his tenth with Robert De Niro -- but the first time the legendary director has ever brought his go-to A-listers together.

A true story of greed, love and murder set in the 1920s, when members of the newly oil-rich Osage Nation in Oklahoma began dying and disappearing in mysterious circumstances, the twisty crime drama hits theatres in October.

Footage played at the movie industry summit in Las Vegas showed DiCaprio's Ernest Burkhart in a romantic relationship with a Native American woman (Lily Gladstone) while seemingly caught in the middle of brutal conflict between the Osage and encircling oil-hungry white capitalists.

De Niro plays William Hale, who is seen conspiring with Burkhart, while Jesse Plemons appears as lawman Tom White, sent from the newly formed Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate the murders.

Originally, DiCaprio was set to play White, but after spending time with the Osage, he and Scorsese decided to make a "big change" to the script, and center the movie less on the FBI and instead on Burkhart.

Scorsese said they were interested in exploring how "some of these people could have done what they did" to the Osage, and how they could rationalize violence -- even against those they loved -- by simply claiming:

"It's civilization. One group comes in, and another goes out." DiCaprio, hosting a Q&amp;A with Scorsese, described the movie's events as a "forgotten part of our past."

The film was shot at the true, real-life locations where grisly events took place, and Scorsese said the script was reworked until the last day of shooting, as he spent time with the Osage people and was anxious to "do right by them."

"It was about immersing ourselves in that world," said the New Yorker, despite the "110-degree heat" and the unsettling presence on the surrounding prairies of coyotes and wild horses.

The film is adapted from David Grann's acclaimed 2017 non-fiction book of the same name and will premiere at next month's Cannes film festival.

Killers&nbsp;will be Apple's highest profile big-screen release yet, as the tech giant launches the film in theatres -- a splashy launch that it hopes can consequently drum up interest in its Apple TV+ streaming platform.

"I'm really thrilled to have a wide theatrical release before it becomes available at home," said Scorsese, joking that small-screen viewing is only "ok" by comparison.

Apple bought the film from Hollywood studio Paramount after the cost of the lavish, nearly three-and-a-half-hour production began to spiral to a reported $200 million, and the two companies struck a deal to distribute the film to theatres.

Scorsese, director of Taxi Driver,&nbsp;Raging Bull&nbsp;and Goodfellas,&nbsp;was awarded CinemaCon's inaugural "Legend of Cinema" award.

DiCaprio said Scorsese's work "will be revered for centuries and generations to come," and that the 80-year-old director continues to "create vital cinematic experiences that are at the very pinnacle of artistic ambition and achievement."

Scorsese used the occasion to call on owners of multiplexes to play "truly independent films" alongside more mainstream fare.

Earlier Thursday, Paramount presented footage from other upcoming films, including Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One&nbsp;and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Star Dominique Fishback told AFP the presence of more "Black and brown people" and voices in Transformers&nbsp;would open up the seven-movie, billions-grossing franchise to "more and more hearts and households."

"It almost feels like we're starting the franchise over," said co-star Anthony Ramos. The presentation featured a surprise appearance from pop superstar Rihanna, who joked that her newly announced role in "The Smurf Movie" would earn her "cool points" with her children.

The Barbados-born artist will voice the role of Smurfette, as well as write and sing original music and produce the film, out February 2025.

"I tried to get the Papa Smurf part but it didn't work out," she joked on stage at Caesars Palace. 
Animation means "I get to show up in my pyjamas in my third trimester and play a little boo badass," said Rihanna, who is pregnant with her second child.

Cillian Murphy essays the role of Oppenheimer. But the film has a veritable army of big names in the supporting cast, including Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh.

He added, "Like it or not, J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived. He made the world we live in — for better or for worse. And his story has to be seen to be believed, and I am certainly hopeful audiences will come to your theaters to see it on the biggest screens possible.”

This is the first project by Nolan in more than two decades that does not involve Warner Bros, the studio with which he had a falling out over the release strategy of his last pic, the science-fiction action-thriller Tenet.

Then James Gunn, the new co-CEO of DC Studios, the entity that succeeds the now-defunct DC Films, gave his vote of confidence earlier this year when he announced the first chapter of DCU's 10-year slate of movies, TV shows, animation, and gaming.

“I don’t know why we are talking about taking (exclusive theatrical windows)&nbsp;away,” Jenkins said. “One studio should plant a flag and make a huge commitment to the theatrical experience and the filmmakers will go there.” 
 
Stating how her movie releasing in&nbsp;theatres and OTT was “heartbreaking” for her, but was the best choice of a bunch of very bad choices.

Movie theater bosses have plenty of cause for cheer this week -- not least because 2,000 of them are spending it at a bustling Las Vegas casino adorned with posters proclaiming "The Big Screen Is Back."

After a year-and-a-half of big film releases placed on hold due to Covid, the CinemaCon trade summit has seen studios show off a glut of forthcoming blockbuster offerings, with James Bond, Batman, Spider-Man and The Matrix all headed for the big screen soon.

But beneath the talk of theatrical renaissance is a great deal of uncertainty -- highlighted by the absence from Caesars Palace of Disney, which unlike its rivals did not put on a presentation of its theatrical schedule for the next few months.

The Delta variant is keeping Disney executives at home -- the same strain of Covid that has reduced US consumer confidence in the safety of going to theaters from its early-summer high.

But Disney bosses may have drawn a frosty reception in the desert heat had they met with owners of international multiplexes and independent mom-and-pop theaters, who rely heavily on their wildly popular product.

Hollywood's biggest studio has launched multiple recent films on its own Disney+ streaming platform, including 'Black Widow,'&nbsp;'Jungle Cruise'&nbsp;and 'Cruella,'&nbsp;taking money out of box office registers and popcorn concession stands.

While its comedy 'Free Guy'&nbsp;and next big Marvel superhero film 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'&nbsp;are exclusive to theaters, nobody knows what Disney is planning next.

"We need to know where they're going in the future," National Association of Theatre Owners chief John Fithian told AFP.

"We just don't know what's coming from them after those movies. We need some greater signals about what their release models are," he added.

Disney is not alone -- rival Warner Bros for instance was slammed by theaters and A-listers for releasing all its 2021 titles on HBO Max, although it has since committed to a shorter, 45-day exclusive big-screen window for next year's movies.

But the competition between entertainment giants to drive new subscribers to their streaming platforms at any cost is a broader issue, and movie theaters are currently caught in the crossfire.&nbsp;

"The streaming wars are hot and heavy, and some studios have their streaming platforms as a big priority, and some don't," said Fithian.&nbsp;

"We are concerned about the attitude of some on the studio side, that profitability doesn't matter -- all that matters is subscribers," he added.

The concern raised by Hollywood studios experimenting with streaming is nothing compared to the ever-growing reach of Big Tech.

Earlier in the week historic studio MGM confirmed the long-delayed James Bond movie 'No Time To Die'&nbsp;will finally see the light of day in October -- important due to the franchise's enormous popularity, and symbolic as 007's outing was the first major movie delayed in March 2020.

But any mention of the Hollywood Golden Age-era studio's ongoing takeover by tech giant Amazon was, like Disney, conspicuously absent.

"What does an Amazon acquisition of MGM mean? We don't know," said Fithian.&nbsp;

"I hope it means that the creative vision, and the ways that movies are released by the MGM team, continues and is encouraged and is fostered. But it might not."

While theater owners insist studios will make more money by putting all their films back on the big screen once the pandemic eases, the equation changes for the deep-pocketed likes of Amazon, who have other priorities.

"It's not a business model that means they want big returns on their movies -- they want to drive people to Amazon Prime," Fithian said.

"It does concern us when a gigantic tech company like that proposes to acquire a historic film studio with filmmakers that want their movies in our theaters," he added.&nbsp;

The Amazon-MGM deal was announced in May, and is currently the subject of a federal antitrust probe.&nbsp;

While the theater owners' group has not taken a formal position, Fithian noted that regulators have the power to block or attach specific conditions to any merger.

"We are concerned about conditions on that acquisition, and we'd like to see movies released by MGM for theatrical release," he said.
