Chinese vessel Xiang Yang Hong 10 began sailing in Vietnam's EEZ on May 7, at times flanked by a dozen ships, regularly crossing gas and oil fields operated by Russian companies, according to vessel-tracking data.

The Chinese vessel and its entourage of more than half a dozen ships began their journey back to China's Hainan island, leaving Vietnam's EEZ around midnight, the data showed.

Asked about the movements of the ships, China's foreign ministry did not comment about the return to Hainan.

"It is legitimate and legal for Chinese research vessels to carry out normal research activities in waters under its jurisdiction, and there is no such issue about entering the exclusive economic zones of other countries," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference on Tuesday.

Vietnam's foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Under international law, ships are allowed to sail through foreign EEZs, but unauthorised surveys are not permitted and China's operations in the South China Sea have long been problematic for countries in the region, as Beijing claims most of the energy-rich sea, including foreign EEZs.

In a rare public protest on May 25, Vietnam's government urged the Chinese research ship and its escort to leave the country's EEZ after a visit to Hanoi by senior Russian official Dmitry Medvedev.

During an annual presser, the Navy chief said: "There are a lot of Chinese ships which operate in the Indian Ocean Region. We have about 4-6 PLA Navy ships, then some research vessels which operate. A large number of Chinese fishing vessels operate in the Indian Ocean Region. We keep a close watch on all developments."&nbsp;

The Indian navy chief also mentioned that nearly 60-odd other extra-regional forces are always present in Indian Ocean Region (IOR). "We are aware it`s a vital region where there is a large amount of trade which transits, energy flows which happen. Our job is to see that India`s interests in the maritime domain are protected," he added.&nbsp;

He further said that the Indian Navy is ready to "protect, preserve and promote" the national interest in the maritime domain. "To achieve this, we have the vision of being a combat-ready, credible, cohesive and future-proof force," he said.&nbsp;

His remarks came after a recent incident when Chinese spy ships of the class of Yuan Wang were spotted near Indian borders in the Indian Ocean Region.&nbsp;

Previously also, the Indian forces said that they were watching the movements of the ships. The authorities had also raised concerns regarding the same.&nbsp;

Recently, a media report mentioned that China might move its spy ship Yuan Wang 5 back towards the Indian Ocean Region. The move could happen ahead of a possible missile test later this month as India has already issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) area warning in the Sea of Andaman. The alert is for about 5000kms for December 15 and December 16.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Navy chief said maintaining a credible deterrence is the task of any armed force, especially the Navy. He said, "To achieve that, we need to be ready to go in harm's way at really short notice."&nbsp;

He also said India cannot stay dependent on the world for its defence requirements. He added that the government has given the Navy very clear guidelines on Atmanirbhar Bharat.&nbsp;

"Recent global events amply underscore that we can't remain dependent on others for our own security requirements... Government has given us very clear guidelines on Aatmanirbhar Bharat and one of the Navy's commitments to the top leadership is that we'll become an Aatmanirbhar Navy by 2047," he said.&nbsp;

A steady increase has been seen in Chinese research and fishing vessel in the Indian Ocean region, something that can be a cause of concern given how they have been involved in&nbsp;illegal, unreported and unregulated(IUU) fishing and data collecting.

Deployment of the Chinese research vessel has been observed in the ninety-degree east ridge and southwest Indian ridge. In the last few weeks, three&nbsp;Chinese research vessels have been seen in the region.

When it comes to Chinese fishing vessels in the high seas, around 300 to 450 have been seen in the last four years. Largely, fishing activity has been a seasonal behavior as they withdraw from the Arabian sea prior to the onset of monsoon and return in September to October period.&nbsp;

The IUU, involving China's distant water fishing (DWF) has been depleting fishing resources from areas near North &amp; South Korean and Japanese waters to as far off as Latin America and West Asia.&nbsp;

Most of the areas Chinese vessels are fishing in the Indian ocean are international water, outside of the exclusive economic zone of any country, but since it is unregulated, it impacts the ecosystem in surrounding waters as well. Distant water fishing is heavily subsidized by Beijing.

The two-way vessel traffic between Pakistan and China via the Indian Ocean has also been significant&nbsp;even as both countries grow engagement.&nbsp;The number of vessels going from China to Pakistan stands at 100 vessels per year, while the number of vessels coming from Pakistan to China stands at 50 per year.

Earlier this year, a Karachi-bound ship with Chinese crew was detained at Gujarat's Kandla port and after the inspection was found to carry an autoclave, used in the ballistic missile.

The development raised eyebrows in Delhi, and was quick to convey its concerns on the issue since the item was on India's dual-use export list.

Japan government on Tuesday lodged strong protests to China over the entry of Chinese coast guard ships into Japan's territorial waters off disputed East China Sea islands and top government spokesperson urged Chinese vessels to leave its territorial water around disputed islands in the East China Sea.

The Chinese ships refused to move out for a third day, Japanese officials said. 
 
"The Chinese ships entered the Japanese territorial waters on October 11 and continue to remain there, for more than two days already. This is extremely unfortunate. Japanese maritime security vessels reiterate the demand to leave Japan's territorial waters," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said it was "regrettable" the situation around the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands, which China calls the Diaoyu Islands, had continued "for more than two days".

Kato said Japan had strongly protested China's move through diplomatic channels after the ships first moved into the area on Sunday.

A Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said Monday "the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islands are China's inherent territory". 
 
Both Japan and China have extended territorial claims over the Senkaku Islands. Japan insists on its sovereignty over the islands, effective since 1895, while China points to the 1783 and 1785 Japanese maps designating the islands as a Chinese territory.

Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Monday admitted that there has been a significant rise in presence of Chinese ships and submarines in the Indian Ocean region.

However, Lanba in an exclusive interview to WION, assured that India&#39;s maritime security is absolutely secure and Navy is keeping a close watch on Chinese activities in the Indian Ocean

&quot;Indian Ocean is the only ocean named after a country. We have a great maritime heritage. Chinese ships are in the Indian Ocean since 2008 and they have a lot of ships and submarines deployed here,&quot; Lanba said.

We are aware of what is happening and last year, we started a new deployment pattern which is mission-based deployment. We monitor all movements and the Indian Navy is fully capable of ensuring its maritime security,&quot; he further assured.

The vigilant Indian Navy became cautious after reports that China plans to deploy a nuclear submarine at Pakistan&#39;s Gwadar port, which is close to Indian waters.&nbsp;

When asked to comment on the Act East Policy Cooperation, Admiral Lanba said the step is in the right direction.&nbsp;

&quot;We have been co-operating with our eastern neighbours since the Act East policy was initiated in 2014. We, along with Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam conduct co-ordinated patrol on our maritime borders,&quot; he said. &quot;We are also helping them train their personnel.&quot;

Admiral Lanba also acknowledged that co-operation with major powers like the United States and Japan is crucial for India.

China has handed over two ships to the Pakistan Navy to safeguard the strategic Gwadar port and trade routes under the USD 46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a move likely to raise alarm in India. China handed over the two ships to the Pakistan Navy yesterday for joint security along the sea route of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Dawn News reported.

The Gwadar port in Pakistan&#39;s restive Balochistan province has been developed under CPEC linking western China through Pakistan with the Middle East, Africa and Europe. The ships &mdash; named after two rivers Hingol and Basol near Gwadar &mdash; were received by Commander of the Pakistan Fleet, Vice Admiral Arifullah Hussaini.

Recently built in China and equipped with state-of-the-art guns, the ships will be part of the Pakistan Navy and also be used to protect the sea-lanes in the Arabian Sea. A ceremony was held in Gwadar where Chinese officials, who reached Gwadar aboard the ships, handed them over to their Pakistani counterparts. Director General of the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Rear Admiral Jamil Akhter, Commander West Commodore Mohammad Waris and top naval and civilian officials were present on the occasion.

China has not only rebuilt the Gwadar port but also has its operational control. It is also building a network of roads and railways to link up its remote western region to Gwadar for easier access to the Arabian Sea.

The revamped Gwadar port became operational in November last year after two cargo ships laden with containers set off for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE and EU.&nbsp;
