US intelligence warns Taiwan of growing China-Russia military cooperation

Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Wednesday (Apr 10) held talks with the pro-China former president of Taiwan in Beijing. The meeting comes ahead of the swearing-in ceremony of the new leader in the island state. Ma Ying-jeou, who remained president of Taiwan from 2008 to 2016, is on an 11-day tour across China. Earlier this week, the leaders of four of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies, namely Saint Lucia and Saint Kitts and Nevis, Tuvalu, and Eswatini, called on the UN to include Taiwan in the climate conference.

The spokesperson named Lockheed Martin Corp's branch in Missouri as the prime contractor claiming that it sold arms to Taiwan on August 24, and added that Northrop Grumman repeatedly participated in the sale of weapons to Taipei.

"According to the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law of the PRC, China has decided to impose sanctions on the above two US military companies," she said.&nbsp;

This is not the first time that China has imposed sanctions on US companies for the sale of arms to Taiwan. However, it is unknown how the proposed sanctions would work since neither company sells to China.

<h2>US increases military aid to Taiwan&nbsp;</h2>

The United States Congress allows the supply of weapons to the self-governing nation under the Taiwan Relations Act.

Earlier, the US used to sell arms rather than provide them as an aid, but in August, the administration for the first time approved direct US military aid to Taiwan under an assistance programme aimed at foreign governments.&nbsp;

She emphasised, "We acknowledge China's position, but we, as the foreign affairs committee, do not accept it."

Kearns urged the foreign secretary to stand by Taiwan and call for its right to self-determination.

The Taiwanese foreign ministry expressed gratitude to the British parliament for its support.&nbsp;

The air force commander, General Liu Yazhou, has expressed disagreements in past about China's policy of military belligerence around Taiwan, said a report in Ming Pao, a Hong Kong newspaper known for reporting on Chinese Communist Party.

Ming Pao has a mixed track record when it comes to the veracity of the information it cites. But this must be seen with respect to the disinformation spread by the CCP elements as part of their information warfare.

Earlier, in&nbsp;February 2022, writer Bi Ruxie, who lives in the United States, said that Liu could be given a heavy sentence based on his opposition to Xi.

According to Bi, who cited information from party insiders, Liu Yazhou had been criticised by Xi in a 40-minute secret speech; Xi supposedly said that Liu was not only guilty of "economic problems" but also spearheaded factionalism within CCP to cater to his leadership ambitions.

Chinese air force officer who opposed Xi Jinping’s Taiwan policy faces death sentence

Hours after concluding its three-day military drills on the Taiwan Straits, the Chinese military posted a simulation video showing how it could launch a full-scale attack against the self-ruled nation if war ever breaks out.&nbsp;

The clip was reposted on Twitter by state-run outlet Global Times on Sunday, after the&nbsp;military’s Eastern Theatre Command&nbsp;shared the animated video on its official WeChat account—the Chinese social media account.&nbsp;

The video showed of what appears to be trajectory missiles landing on Taiwan and its surrounding waters as it mapped out how the Chinese forces, including military aircraft and navy vessels, could launch a coordinated attack.&nbsp;

Though the video can be perceived as propaganda and bluster in the wake of Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen's US visit, it is clearly aimed at subduing Taipei’s efforts to seek international support for its cause—to safeguard its sovereignty.&nbsp;

Notably, the animated video is eerily similar to the simulating&nbsp;precision strikes carried out by the Chinese forces on Taiwan&nbsp;over&nbsp;Easter.&nbsp;

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Taiwanese President Tsai slammed China for its ‘irresponsible’ behaviour over the military drills.&nbsp;

“Although China's military exercises have come to an end, the national army and national security team will continue to hold their positions and defend the country.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s defence ministry on Tuesday claimed that their defence forces have spotted Chinese warplanes and navy ships on their waters despite announcing the end of war games.&nbsp;

Around nine Chinese ships and 26 aircraft, including J-16 and Su-30 fighters, were seen carrying out combat readiness patrols around the island late Tuesday morning, the ministry said, reports Reuters news agency.&nbsp;

Taiwan's air force, navy and shore-based missile crews are closely monitoring and responding, it added.&nbsp;

Taiwan's government has repeatedly denounced the drills but said they will not escalate or provoke.&nbsp;

Chinese’ exercises have caused concern in Japan as well, as its southern islands sit close to Taiwan and could become caught up in a conflict.&nbsp;

The Japanese island of Okinawa is host to a major US air force base, and last August when China staged war games to protest the visit of then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei, Chinese missiles landed within Japan's exclusive economic zone.&nbsp;

On Sunday, the ministry said it was monitoring Chinese military "movements through (a) joint intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance system", adding that the warplanes detected until 12 pm local time (0400 GMT) included a mix of fighter jets and bombers.

The ministry expressed "solemn condemnation of such irrational actions", adding the detections — which included 29 jets crossing Taiwan's median line — took place between 6 am and 11 am local time, reports AFP news agency.

Earlier in the day, China announced that it was launching three days of military drills in the Taiwan Strait. According to the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command, "United Sharp Sword" would run from April 8 to 10 for "combat preparedness."&nbsp;In a PLA statement, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the Eastern Theatre Command, said the exercise would involve police patrol drills in the&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;Strait, "to the north and south of&nbsp;Taiwan, and in the sea and airspace to the east of&nbsp;Taiwan".

The exact location of these drills is not yet known.&nbsp; 
 
China's military is rehearsing an "encirclement" of Taiwan during the drills, state media reported. "The task force will simultaneously organise patrols and advances around Taiwan island, shaping an all-round encirclement and deterrence posture," CCTV said.

China views self-ruled&nbsp;Taiwan&nbsp;as part of its territory and has vowed to one day seize it, by force if necessary.&nbsp;

The announcement of the military drills comes after Taiwanese President Tsai In-wen met US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California on Wednesday. Hours before the meeting, Beijing&nbsp;sent its Shandong aircraft carrier through&nbsp;Taiwan's southeastern waters on its way to the western Pacific.

On Saturday, Taiwan's defence ministry said it detected&nbsp;three warships and 13 Chinese aircraft around the island, following President Tsai's return from the US.

“I saw the news, but it’s not going to stop our plans for today,” a 30-year-old visitor named Wu told AFP. He added, “Relations with Taiwan aren't great at the moment, but they’re stable. We hope for peaceful reunification.”&nbsp;

Similarly, another man named Lin said that the drills were just “a few preventive measures being taken by the government,” and hoped that China and Taiwan would reunify someday.&nbsp;

The cross-strait violation by the Chinese forces fall in line with a pattern Beijing has been adopting every time Taiwan is seen maintaining and strengthening its bilateral ties with the United States.&nbsp;

Since September 2020, when Taiwan began renewing its US outreach, China started regular incursions in self-ruled island's Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, China slapped sanctions on Taipei's de facto ambassador to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, banning her from entering China and accusing her of "deliberately inciting cross-strait confrontation".

Taiwan condemned the sanctions, saying Beijing was attempting to "further suppress our country's international space".

"Coercion and suppression will not change the objective facts, but will only strengthen our government's belief in upholding freedom and democracy," Taiwan's foreign office said in a statement.

Addressing the lawmakers in parliament, Chiu said that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) might find excuses to enter areas close to Taiwan’s territorial air and sea space.

“The PLA might make a sudden entry into Taiwan’s contiguous zone and get close to its territory”, which the island defines as 22km (12 nautical miles) from its coast, he said, according to AFP news agency

“[I] specifically make these comments this year, meaning they are&nbsp;making such preparations…Looking forward, they would use force if they really have to,” Chiu was quoted as saying.

He also raised concerns over China announcing that it would increase the military spending 7.2 per cent to 1.55 trillion yuan ($225 billion), while indicating that Beijing was "preparing for the use of force if necessary" to potentially capture the self-ruled island.

In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a daily briefing said that Beijing “will take firm measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

China has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve unification with Taiwan.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director, William Burns, has expressed doubts about the ability of China to successfully invade the self-ruled nation of Taiwan. Citing US intelligence reports, he further said that President Xi Jinping instructed his country’s military to “be ready by 2027”, but had reservations about whether it was capable of carrying out a such a military operation.&nbsp;

In a televised interview on Sunday, the CIA chief stressed that the US should take “very seriously” Xi’s desire to ultimately control Taiwan even if military conflict is not inevitable.&nbsp;

“We do know, as has been made public, that President Xi has instructed the PLA, the Chinese military leadership, to be ready by 2027 to invade Taiwan, but that doesn’t mean that he’s decided to invade in 2027 or any other year as well,” Burns told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”&nbsp;

Burns said that Beijing’s sentiments to control Taiwan might have been deterred by Russian President Vladimir Putin's setbacks during the invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

“I think, as they’ve looked at Putin’s experience in Ukraine, that’s probably reinforced some of those doubts,” he said.&nbsp;

“So, all I would say is that I think the risks of, you know, the potential use of force probably grow the further into this decade you get and beyond it, into the following decade as well.&nbsp;

He, however, cautioned that the West needed to take Xi's ambitions to invade Taiwan "very seriously."&nbsp;

Taiwan broke away from China in 1949 after a bloody civil war that ended with the Communist Party taking control of the mainland.&nbsp;

The self-governing island is yet to be recognised by the United Nations or&nbsp;any major country.&nbsp;

In 1979, then-president Jimmy Carter formally recognised the government in Beijing and severed ties with Taiwan. In response, Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act, creating a benchmark for a continuing relationship.&nbsp;

CIA chief ‘doubtful’ of China’s ability to invade Taiwan

Drones could play a significant role in the event of a full-scale invasion of Taiwan, a Chinese military magazine has reported.

During an all-out attack, drones will play a key role in order to achieve a decisive outcome, the article highlighted, noting their advantages over manned aircraft and other weapons systems.

“Manned combat aircraft can only stay in the air for a short time, usually three to four hours, which is completely different from the 30 to 40 hours of large and medium-sized drones,” it said.

It said that drones have the upper hand while attacking smaller vessels.

&nbsp;“Long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drones like the GJ-2/11 and BZK-005C, TB-001 could carry out real-time surveillance and cooperate with attack helicopters to mount strikes against Taiwan’s smaller vessels.”

It also said PLA could deploy WZ-7 high-altitude long-endurance reconnaissance drones and extend a blockade of Taiwan to the second island chain.

The strategic group of islands in the middle of the western Pacific Ocean includes Guam, where a US military base is located, some 2,700km (1,600 miles) from Taiwan.

Tensions have been rising in Taiwan Strait ever since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi&nbsp;visited the self-ruled island in August last year, triggering strong reactions from China. The PLA, in response, launched live-fire drills around Taiwan.

PLA has been upping its arsenal with the introduction of combat drones. According to media reports, China has TB-001 long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drone, the BZK-005 and BZK-007 long-range reconnaissance drones, the KVD-001 tactical reconnaissance and damage assessment drone, and the WZ-7 reconnaissance drone.
