Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen appealed to voters on Sunday to think of what had happened to Chinese-controlled Hong Kong when they cast their ballots next month, saying peace must be backed up with a commitment to boost defences. China detests Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its presidential candidate, Vice President Lai Ching-te, calling them dangerous separatists.

China on Friday sanctioned two US defence companies— Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman—for supplying arms to Taiwan.

In a press conference, China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the punitive measures are being taken under the country's Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law.

"We urge the US side to effectively abide by the one-China principle... cease US-Taiwan military liaison and stop arming Taiwan, or else it will be subject to a resolute and forceful retaliation by the Chinese side," she said.

The spokesperson named Lockheed Martin Corp's branch in Missouri as the prime contractor claiming that it sold arms to Taiwan on August 24, and added that Northrop Grumman repeatedly participated in the sale of weapons to Taipei.

"According to the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law of the PRC, China has decided to impose sanctions on the above two US military companies," she said.

This is not the first time that China has imposed sanctions on US companies for the sale of arms to Taiwan. However, it is unknown how the proposed sanctions would work since neither company sells to China.

The United States Congress allows the supply of weapons to the self-governing nation under the Taiwan Relations Act.

Earlier, the US used to sell arms rather than provide them as an aid, but in August, the administration for the first time approved direct US military aid to Taiwan under an assistance programme aimed at foreign governments.

For the first time, the British parliament has officially referred to Taiwan as an "independent country" in an official document. The move breaks a geopolitical quid pro quo for London amid Foreign Secretary James Cleverly's visit to China this week. Cleverly is the first high-ranking British envoy to visit Beijing in five years.

The new phrasing appears in a report released by the influential foreign affairs committee of the House of Commons on Wednesday, August 29. The move has irked Beijing amid a strained relationship between the two countries.

China has accused London of distorting facts. The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson called on the British parliament to adhere to the 'one China' principle and stop sending signals supportive of Taiwanese independence.

China has consistently denied Taiwan's statehood, maintaining that the self-governing democratic island is part of its territory. Only 13 nations worldwide recognise Taipei diplomatically.

What exactly did the report say?

The report said that Taiwan has all the credentials to be a nation-state independent of China.

"Taiwan is already an independent country, under the name Republic of China," the committee report says. "Taiwan possesses all the qualifications for statehood, including a permanent population, a defined territory, government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states — it is only lacking greater international recognition."

House of Commons foreign affairs committee chairperson Alicia Kearns of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party, stated that this marks the first time a UK parliamentary report has made such a declaration.

She emphasised, "We acknowledge China's position, but we, as the foreign affairs committee, do not accept it."

Kearns urged the foreign secretary to stand by Taiwan and call for its right to self-determination.

The Taiwanese foreign ministry expressed gratitude to the British parliament for its support.

"We are grateful [for] the British parliament’s support for Taiwan’s status and international participation," a ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Politico.

The committee's report also criticised Sunak's government for its cautious approach to supporting Taiwan.

Taiwan an 'independent country', says British parliament

As China continues to ramp up its rhetoric against Taiwan, it has released a new documentary featuring soldiers pledging to give up their lives if needed. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Chinese documentary showcasing ability to attack Taiwan

The Group of seven wealthy countries (G7) issued a stern warning to the nations aiding Russia in the Ukraine war after the conclusion of their meeting in Japan’s Nagano prefecture, saying that they are committed to enforcing tough sanctions against Moscow.

Though the discussion between foreign ministers of the seven countries also found mention of Chinese and North Korean aggressiveness in Northeast Asia, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued to dominate the three-day talks.

“There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities such as Russia’s attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure,” the joint communique stated.

“We remain committed to intensifying sanctions against Russia, coordinating and fully enforcing them,” the communique said, and would support “for as long as it takes” Ukraine as it defends itself.

The document or the communique acts as a template for global leaders to use at the G7 summit that will be held in Hiroshima next month. It also mentions Iran, Myanmar, nuclear proliferation and other “grave issues.”

Two crises were discussed in detail in the meeting. China's increasing threats to Taiwan—the self-governing democracy that Beijing claims as its own—and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The G7 ministers from Japan, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Italy and the European Union have underlined that their meeting in Karuizawa marks a crucial moment in the world's response to both crises, which are seen as challenges to the post-World War II rules-based international order.

The West has repeatedly raised concerns about the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine, as it faces a defiant Ukrainian force.

Their efforts to make Russia accountable in global forums, like the UN Security Council, have been stymied by China and Moscow.

A senior Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) air force commander, who was arrested by the Chinese Communist Party, received a death sentence for "serious economic corruption". The air force commander, General Liu Yazhou, has expressed disagreements in past about China's policy of military belligerence around Taiwan, said a report in Ming Pao, a Hong Kong newspaper known for reporting on Chinese Communist Party.

Ming Pao has a mixed track record when it comes to the veracity of the information it cites. But this must be seen with respect to the disinformation spread by the CCP elements as part of their information warfare.

Earlier, in February 2022, writer Bi Ruxie, who lives in the United States, said that Liu could be given a heavy sentence based on his opposition to Xi.

According to Bi, who cited information from party insiders, Liu Yazhou had been criticised by Xi in a 40-minute secret speech; Xi supposedly said that Liu was not only guilty of "economic problems" but also spearheaded factionalism within CCP to cater to his leadership ambitions.

Chinese air force officer who opposed Xi Jinping’s Taiwan policy faces death sentence

Hours after concluding its three-day military drills on the Taiwan Straits, the Chinese military posted a simulation video showing how it could launch a full-scale attack against the self-ruled nation if war ever breaks out.

The clip was reposted on Twitter by state-run outlet Global Times on Sunday, after the military’s Eastern Theatre Command shared the animated video on its official WeChat account—the Chinese social media account.

The video showed of what appears to be trajectory missiles landing on Taiwan and its surrounding waters as it mapped out how the Chinese forces, including military aircraft and navy vessels, could launch a coordinated attack.

Though the video can be perceived as propaganda and bluster in the wake of Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen's US visit, it is clearly aimed at subduing Taipei’s efforts to seek international support for its cause—to safeguard its sovereignty.

The United States struck a note of caution saying that it was “monitoring” China as it continued its military drills around Taiwan for the second day on Sunday.

China began the three-day exercise on Saturday, a day after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen returned from the United States, where she met the speaker of US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, despite Beijing's warnings against it.

"We are monitoring Beijing's actions closely," said a spokesperson for the American Institute in Taiwan, which serves as the United States' de facto embassy in the absence of formal diplomatic ties, according to Reuters news agency.

"As we have said, there is no reason for Beijing to turn this transit — which was consistent with longstanding US practice and policy — into something it is not or use it as a pretext to overreact," the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson further said that the channels of communication between China and US are open, and urged Beijing to show restraint.

Taiwan detects 8 Chinese warships, 42 fighter jets around island as Beijing launches military drills

China, early Saturday (April 8), announced that it was launching a three-day military drill in the Taiwan Strait. According to the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command, “United Sharp Sword” would begin on April 8 and end on April 10 for “combat preparedness.”

The announcement, in the backdrop of the recent escalation in tensions between Beijing and Taipei, took many by surprise but it has not had a similar effect on the residents of either China or Taiwan.

Military drills in Taiwan Strait

After China’s announcement, its fighter jets briefly crossed the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait as they began drills around Taiwan. This comes after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met United States House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other officials during her visit to the U.S., which Beijing has since condemned.

China’s anger at the visit largely stems from its claims that the democratically governed Taiwan is its territory and threatens to use force to bring the island under its control. Meanwhile, the Taiwanese government contests China’s claims.

In line with this, the Chinese army’s Eastern Theater Command said that the drills are a “serious warning to the Taiwan independence separatist forces and external forces’ collusion and provocation, and it is a necessary action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said it was monitoring the drills and would respond appropriately to defend the island’s security and released a video message, emphasising they would monitor the situation without escalating tensions. The video shows Taiwan’s army, navy and air force conducting drills and monitoring China’s movements.

Taiwan’s president, who was in the midst of hosting a US lawmakers' delegation, led by Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that the people of Taiwan love democracy and seek peace. She added that it would strengthen security cooperation with the US without directly mentioning the drills in her televised address.

Chinese citizens largely in favour of reunifying Taiwan with mainland

A report by Reuters after speaking to citizens in Beijing said that while people are largely in support of the military drills around Taiwan, some are also worried about how it will affect their business. “Military exercises are what we should do…let's take Taiwan with military force,” said Wang, 35, who only provided his last name.

Meanwhile, 39-year-old Zhou told the news agency, that she was a “bit worried” as her work involves international trade with the main markets being the United States and Canada and many others who work in similar fields are concerned about how escalating tensions would impact their jobs.

On the other hand, Chinese tourists on an island near Taiwan were largely unaware and least bothered by Beijing’s military drill launch in the strait beyond, reported the news agency AFP. The tourists at the time were present along the coast of Pingtan, a scenic isle that is the closest point on the mainland to Taiwan.

“I saw the news, but it’s not going to stop our plans for today,” a 30-year-old visitor named Wu told AFP. He added, “Relations with Taiwan aren't great at the moment, but they’re stable. We hope for peaceful reunification.”

Similarly, another man named Lin said that the drills were just “a few preventive measures being taken by the government,” and hoped that China and Taiwan would reunify someday.

“The drills are just a way to show our national strength, after all. Chen also expressed hope that China can reclaim Taiwan in a “peaceful” way.

Taiwan remains calm amid military drills

There was no broader sense of alarm in Taiwan about the military drills as people have long been accustomed to Chinese threats, reported Reuters, citing a senior Taiwan official familiar with security planning in the region who spoke to the news agency on the condition of anonymity. The official said that the situation was “as expected” and manageable and the Taiwanese government has rehearsed various scenarios for its response.

Explained | How people in Beijing and Taipei have reacted to China’s military drills

A Chinese fighter jet and an anti-submarine helicopter violated Taiwan's Air Defence Identification Zone while a number of People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) warships sailed in waters surrounding the self-ruled island, the Taiwanese defence ministry said. The developments occurred hours before Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met US House speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

China's Shandong aircraft carrier sailed through Taiwan's southeastern waters on its way to the western Pacific, Taiwanese defence ministry said.

Tsai told reporters her government was committed to ensuring "the free and democratic way of life of the people of Taiwan" before she left Los Angeles where she was stopping on her way back from Latin America.

"We also hope to do our best to maintain peace and stability between the two sides," she added.

Beijing said on Friday that "Taiwan is an inseparable part of China", after repeatedly warning against the meeting.

"China's sovereignty and territorial integrity will never be divided," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing.

"The future of Taiwan lies in reunification with the motherland."

The cross-strait violation by the Chinese forces fall in line with a pattern Beijing has been adopting every time Taiwan is seen maintaining and strengthening its bilateral ties with the United States.

Since September 2020, when Taiwan began renewing its US outreach, China started regular incursions in self-ruled island's Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, China slapped sanctions on Taipei's de facto ambassador to the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim, banning her from entering China and accusing her of "deliberately inciting cross-strait confrontation".

Taiwan condemned the sanctions, saying Beijing was attempting to "further suppress our country's international space".

"Coercion and suppression will not change the objective facts, but will only strengthen our government's belief in upholding freedom and democracy," Taiwan's foreign office said in a statement.

Chinese warships, fighter jets encircled Taiwan before Tsai-McCarthy meet

Is Taiwan facing an internal rift? Taiwan's former President is on a visit to the mainland. He recently said that people on both sides are 'Chinese'. What do we make of this? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Has China split Taiwan's leaders?

Taiwan’s Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng on Monday said that the country should prepare itself for a “sudden entry” of the Chinese military into its air and sea space, and pressed for increased military exchanges with the US.

Addressing the lawmakers in parliament, Chiu said that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) might find excuses to enter areas close to Taiwan’s territorial air and sea space.

“The PLA might make a sudden entry into Taiwan’s contiguous zone and get close to its territory”, which the island defines as 22km (12 nautical miles) from its coast, he said, according to AFP news agency

“[I] specifically make these comments this year, meaning they are making such preparations…Looking forward, they would use force if they really have to,” Chiu was quoted as saying.

He also raised concerns over China announcing that it would increase the military spending 7.2 per cent to 1.55 trillion yuan ($225 billion), while indicating that Beijing was "preparing for the use of force if necessary" to potentially capture the self-ruled island.

China's defence spending to rise, will spend $225 billion on Defence in 2023

"It seems the other side is preparing for the use of force if necessary in the future."

Taiwan lives under constant threat of an invasion by China, which views the democratically ruled island as part of its territory to be seized one day, by force if necessary.

In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a daily briefing said that Beijing “will take firm measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

In recent years, China has intensified its military activities around Taiwan, including almost daily air force incursions into the island’s air defence identification zone.

China has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve unification with Taiwan.

“The PLA might make a sudden entry into Taiwan’s contiguous zone and get close to its territory”, which the island defines as 22km (12 nautical miles) from its coast, he said, according to AFP news agency “[I] specifically make these comments this year, meaning they are making such preparations…Looking forward, they would use force if they really have to,” Chiu was quoted as saying. He also raised concerns over China announcing that it would increase the military spending 7.2 per cent to 1.55 trillion yuan ($225 billion), while indicating that Beijing was "preparing for the use of force if necessary" to potentially capture the self-ruled island. China's defence spending to rise, will spend $225 billion on Defence in 2023 "It seems the other side is preparing for the use of force if necessary in the future." Taiwan lives under constant threat of an invasion by China, which views the democratically ruled island as part of its territory to be seized one day, by force if necessary. In recent years, China has intensified its military activities around Taiwan, including almost daily air force incursions into the island’s air defence identification zone. China has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve unification with Taiwan. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Taiwan’s defence minister warns China may make ‘sudden entry’

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director, William Burns, has expressed doubts about the ability of China to successfully invade the self-ruled nation of Taiwan. Citing US intelligence reports, he further said that President Xi Jinping instructed his country’s military to “be ready by 2027”, but had reservations about whether it was capable of carrying out a such a military operation.

In a televised interview on Sunday, the CIA chief stressed that the US should take “very seriously” Xi’s desire to ultimately control Taiwan even if military conflict is not inevitable.

“We do know, as has been made public, that President Xi has instructed the PLA, the Chinese military leadership, to be ready by 2027 to invade Taiwan, but that doesn’t mean that he’s decided to invade in 2027 or any other year as well,” Burns told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

Burns said that Beijing’s sentiments to control Taiwan might have been deterred by Russian President Vladimir Putin's setbacks during the invasion of Ukraine.

“I think, as they’ve looked at Putin’s experience in Ukraine, that’s probably reinforced some of those doubts,” he said.

CIA chief ‘doubtful’ of China’s ability to invade Taiwan

Drones could play a significant role in the event of a full-scale invasion of Taiwan, a Chinese military magazine has reported.

The article further illustrates that drones can “assassinate enemy leaders” and can be utilised to minimise conflict, adding that their targets can be Taiwan’s mobile missile launchers and heavy weaponry.

The report, which gives a glimpse of how a Chinese military’s attack on Taiwan might unfold, was published in Ordnance Industry Science Technology, reports South China Morning Post.

According to the article, once launching “the final unification war”, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would first like to “suppress the island of Taiwan in all directions – land, sea, air, space, electricity and the internet”.

During an all-out attack, drones will play a key role in order to achieve a decisive outcome, the article highlighted, noting their advantages over manned aircraft and other weapons systems.

“Manned combat aircraft can only stay in the air for a short time, usually three to four hours, which is completely different from the 30 to 40 hours of large and medium-sized drones,” it said.

It said that drones have the upper hand while attacking smaller vessels.

“Long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drones like the GJ-2/11 and BZK-005C, TB-001 could carry out real-time surveillance and cooperate with attack helicopters to mount strikes against Taiwan’s smaller vessels.”

It also said PLA could deploy WZ-7 high-altitude long-endurance reconnaissance drones and extend a blockade of Taiwan to the second island chain.

The strategic group of islands in the middle of the western Pacific Ocean includes Guam, where a US military base is located, some 2,700km (1,600 miles) from Taiwan.

Tensions have been rising in Taiwan Strait ever since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-ruled island in August last year, triggering strong reactions from China. The PLA, in response, launched live-fire drills around Taiwan.

PLA has been upping its arsenal with the introduction of combat drones. According to media reports, China has TB-001 long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drone, the BZK-005 and BZK-007 long-range reconnaissance drones, the KVD-001 tactical reconnaissance and damage assessment drone, and the WZ-7 reconnaissance drone.

Taiwan's foreign minister, Joseph Wu, in an exclusive interview with Guardian, has said that China is preparing to find another “pretext for practising their future attack” on the island. The island has witnessed a record number of military threats and incursions this year, raising fears that Beijing's military threat was “getting more serious than ever”.

Reportedly, there has been a five-fold increase in warplane incursions into Taiwan’s defence zone since 2020.

Wu added that following last month’s removal of several rival Communist party members, cross-strait communications are likely to diminish even further now, especially given that Xi Jinping has secured a third term.

The biggest military exercises were conducted in August when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.

Chinese officials said the exercises were a practice of blockade tactics that will be used against Taiwan for real some day. Analysts believe the scale of the exercises suggests that China had been preparing for them for a ling time and Pelosi's visit provided them with an excuse to conduct them.

“And we are quite sure that the Chinese may want to use another pretext of practising their future attacks against Taiwan. So this is a military threat against Taiwan,” said Wu.

Wu further said that besides military tactics, China is also ramping up other measures aimed at weakening and isolating Taiwan. These include economic coercion, cyber-attacks, and cognitive and legal warfare.

Taiwan’s air defence zone has already had incursions from 1,500 Chinese warplanes this year, as compared to 380 in 2020. Such events heighten the risk of accidents, leading to escalation of issues. However, while previously cross strait communications settled such matters, Tsai Ing-wen's election as president in 2016 led to the severing of official ties.

Wu said that Taiwanese businesspeople and academics who had “good connections with the Chinese side” earlier helped them with communication. But a political purge following Xi's re-election has shut those doors.

“It is because the Chinese government system has become so authoritarian. It’s not like the old days when regular academia could write recommendations to the central government and are able to get in touch with the key decision-makers and tell us what is the thinking of the top leaders, things like that,” he said.

“In these couple of years, we are seeing that Chinese academia are afraid of saying different things other than Chinese propaganda... He (Xi) is the paramount leader and there’s no one else challenging him right now.”

US military equipment worth over USD 1.1 billion, including Harpoon and Sidewinder missiles, will be sold to Taiwan, the country stated on Friday. Taiwan's purchase of military hardware has received Washington's approval, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DCSA) acknowledged in a number of statements.

According to DSCA, the sale of Harpoon Block II Missiles and associated equipment to Taiwan for an estimated USD 355 million was approved by the US State Department in order to enhance the island's defence capabilities and advance US security interests.

The state department also approved the sale of Block II Sidewinder Missiles and associated equipment for an estimated USD 85.6 million, as per DSCA.

The probable sale of USD 665.4 million in Surveillance Radar Programme support and equipment was also approved, DCSA stated.

The core military balance in the area won't be changed by the proposed sales, according to DCSA. The potential sales coincide with rising hostilities between Washington and Beijing over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's divisive trip to Taiwan.

Boeing produces Harpoons, which are anti-ship homing missiles with littoral water capabilities. The purchase of 60 of the missiles and associated hardware was sought by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO).

Raytheon created air-to-air missiles called Sidewinders that can lock on to targets after being launched. TECRO made a request to purchase 100 of the missiles and associated hardware.

In order to enhance the situational awareness and threat warning capabilities of the island, TECRO also asked to purchase Contractor Logistics Support for their Surveillance Radar Program, according to DCSA. The sale's major contractor would be Raytheon.

The Taiwanese military had on Thursday downed an unidentified civilian drone that had violated its airspace over Shiyu Island's restricted waters early in the morning. Shiyu Island is located just off the coast of China.

According to a statement issued by Taiwan's defence ministry, "The Jinmen Defence Command of the Army revealed that about 12:30 p.m. today (1), an unidentified civilian aerial camera was observed to infiltrate the airspace over the restricted waters of Shiyu Island."

The statement read, "The ministry of defence will continue to search, monitor, and closely monitor to preserve the security of the defence region."

A similar incident involving a Chinese military drone entering "restricted" air space over an island under Taiwanese sovereignty and being shot at by the Taiwanese military was reported on Tuesday.

In light of the current high cross-strait tensions, China opposes the sale of armaments to Taiwan worth USD 1.1 billion. The Chinese embassy in Washington informed Sputnik that China will take the necessary counter-measures.

Since about the middle of August, several civilian drones have been seen circling the little island of Kinmen, which is 180 kilometres from Taiwan's main island but only 10 kilometres from China. Two mask-wearing Taiwanese troops reportedly tossed rocks at a Chinese drone on one occasion, on August 16, as it flew over their military base.

Biden plans to ask Congress to approve $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan, Politico report says

Taiwan’s response to the latest round of China’s rather aggressive retaliation to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s Taiwan visit has been measured and calculated yet firm. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen remarked, “We will work to maintain the peaceful and stable status quo in the Taiwan Strait. We are calm and will not act in haste. We are rational and will not act to provoke. But we will absolutely not back down.” Taiwan is showing resolve and is being transparent with swift dissemination of information but China is upping the ante in the Taiwan Strait.

China’s overreaction, symptomatic of its insecurities vis-à-vis Taiwan, is very much in continuation with its conventional response whenever there is a high-profile foreign visitor to Taiwan. China wants Taiwan to get sunk into oblivion, and deprive it of any international legitimacy.

Unfortunately for China, the COVID-19 pandemic gave Taiwan a rare opportunity to reach out to the global community and expand its international space amid China’s attempts to shrink former’s international space and poach diplomatic allies. This was a direct outcome of Tsai government’s refusal to accept the 1992 consensus to govern the cross-Strait ties that led China to suspend the cross-Strait dialogue.

While accusing Taiwan and the United States of altering the status quo through Pelosi’s visit, China conveniently forgets that in reality, it is China that has unilaterally violated the status quo in recent years. Its repeated encroachments into Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) and attempts to persuade countries to not acknowledge and engage Taiwan are violations too.

So far as its strategic options are concerned, in spite of its heightened rhetoric and intimidation, it is a prevalent view in Taiwan that China is less likely to opt for a full-fledged military response.

What makes China’s choices difficult is the fact that this is a crucial time for China and it cannot afford to appear weak, both in front of the international community and the domestic audience. On August 2, marching of the tanks on a beach in Xiamen that is China’s closest point to Taiwan’s outlying island, Kinmen, when people were enjoying at the beach was to showcase the domestic audience that China views Pelosi’s visit as a violation of its sovereignty and if the need arises, will respond with military actions.

We are in a long haul here, and China’s intimidation might continue for months or even years. However, this is not something that Taiwan has not seen before. Taiwan has been living under the China threat for decades but the world is taking cognizance of it now.

Arguably, China’s retaliation against Taiwan is likely to be fivefold: spreading disinformation, launching cyberattacks, intensifying economic coercion, seeking reassurances and trying to shape the narrative in its favour, and further intensification in the naval and air incursions.

As Pelosi was landing, Chinese state media outlets launched a coordinated verbal attack on the social media apps and even spread disinformation that Su-35 fighter jets have crossed into Taiwan’s airspace. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense promptly dismissed such false stories by the Chinese state media. On the day of Pelosi’s arrival, several Taiwanese websites including the President Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs were hit by ‘unknown’ overseas cyberattacks. On August 3, the digital signage of several convenience stores and government facilities in Taiwan was hacked and even displayed anti-Pelosi messages. China’s disinformation campaigns to create panic among Taiwanese and millions of cyberattacks originating from China have been a common problem that the Tsai Ing-wen government is grappling with.

A long-term response includes economic coercion. China has already banned 100 Taiwanese food snacks manufacturers, imports of citrus fruits, and varieties of fish. China’s economic sanctions are only going to intensify as it is trying to hit Taiwan where it hurts the most given the cross-Strait economic interdependence.

China is also using this episode to seek reassurances from several countries on their adherences to the One-China Policy. Two of the first countries to come in support of China were Russia and North Korea. Additionally, the Chinese diplomats are hoping to shape the narrative of the people in the host countries through social media interactions and writing op-eds in the traditional media.

One of the most alarming responses is the further increase in military activities around Taiwan. With this, China aims to achieve three objectives: it wants to generate panic among people and intimidate Taiwan; it allows China to check Taiwan’s preparedness, the United States’ resolve to defend Taiwan, and even Japan’s response in an event of future cross-Strait conflict; and deter countries to expand interactions with Taiwan leading to Taiwan’s isolation.

These moves seem to be punitive measures, and are to deter the United States and Taiwan from improving semi-political exchanges and other countries to freely engage Taiwan. For now, China’s response seems to be a mix of military intimidation, verbal brinkmanship, and cutting off dialogues on key issues with the United States with a possibility of downgrading diplomatic contacts.

China’s actions will have long-term implications. While this increases anxiety and tensions in the Taiwan Strait, such miscalculations have the potential to create further problems for China. This is leading to further deterioration of relations with the United States, Japan, and other G7 countries with a possibility of the United States and Japan also getting involved in any future contingency.

It will dent China’s image and establish it as an aggressor. China has active territorial disputes with countries such as India, Japan, Southeast Asian nations. If China decides to escalate, it will harbour anxiety among countries that they might be next, and only bolster the resolve of countries to further strengthen a collective response to maintain the peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Pompeo voices concern over Taiwan as Russian invasion of Ukraine unfolds

Amidst the Russia-Ukraine war, former US president Donald Trump has claimed that Taiwan might be the next potential target, suggesting that the present conflict in Europe might give enough fodder for China to launch an attack.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Trump was quoted as saying, “Taiwan is going to be next. Just watch Taiwan; President Xi is watching with glee.”

He based his assumption on the Biden administration’s response to the Ukraine invasion.

"I do because they're seeing how stupid the United States is run. They're seeing that our leaders are incompetent. And of course, they're (China) going to do it. This is their time," he said, adding, “They (US) did nothing on Ukraine. They do nothing."

"President Xi happens to be a man with a high intelligence level, and he looks at what happened in Afghanistan … He saw the way that we left Afghanistan … left American citizens there – is still trying to get out – he sees that, and this is his opportunity to do what he wants to do," he said.

Trump also took a dig at President Joe Biden's handling of the Ukraine crisis.

“Biden said such weak statements at the beginning that Putin said ‘Oh wow, this is my time to go,’” he said.

Earlier, Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen expressed concerns over the ongoing conflict saying that her island faces threats similar to those confronted by Ukraine during a meeting with a delegation of former US security officials.

"History teaches us that if we turn a blind eye to military aggression, we only worsen the threat to ourselves," Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen told the delegation.

"The Ukrainian people's commitment to protect their freedom and democracy, and their fearless dedication to defending their country have been met with deep empathy from the people of Taiwan, as we too stand on the frontlines of the battle for democracy."

‘Just watch, Taiwan is going to be next’: Trump warns as Russia-Ukraine war rages on

A week ago, Taiwan said it would not participate in the opening ceremony of the Winter Games in Beijing. Then the island democracy reversed its decision, citing pressure from the International Olympic Committee.

In at first declining, Taiwanese officials had pointed to inconvenient flight schedules and pandemic restrictions. But they are also engaged in a political rivalry with Beijing over the Olympics, embodied in one persistent issue: the name of Taiwan’s delegation.

Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China claims as its territory, has for decades been compelled to compete in international sports events as “Chinese Taipei” rather than as Taiwan or under its formal name, Republic of China. The International Olympic Committee’s rules prohibit delegations from Taiwan from using any symbols suggesting that the island is a sovereign nation.

When Taiwan said on Monday that it had decided to take part in the opening ceremony, officials from the island urged China not to try to use the Games to suppress Taiwan. They did not go into specifics, but some Taiwanese officials worry that Beijing might use the Games to undermine the island’s status.

The dispute centres on the Chinese rendering of the Taiwanese delegation’s name, “Chinese Taipei.” Officially, the delegation’s Chinese name is Zhonghua Taipei. But officials on the mainland often refer to the Taiwanese delegation as Zhongguo Taipei. Zhongguo is the Chinese name for China; referring to the Taiwanese delegation as such implies that the athletes and the island they represent are part of China.

In 2008, when the Taiwan delegation marched into the National Stadium in Beijing for the Summer Olympics, the event’s Chinese announcer stuck to the official version of the delegation’s name. But relations between the two sides have since deteriorated, and concerns have grown that this time, China might use the ceremonies as an opportunity to assert its claim over Taiwan.

On Friday, the island’s delegation will not get to use the name Taiwan on their national team uniforms, sing their anthem or carry the island’s flag during the opening ceremony.

“I actually feel a bit disappointed that I can’t compete with the name of Taiwan,” Lin Sin-rong, a luger who is competing in Beijing, said in January. “When it comes to China, I do what I should and keep what I shouldn’t say in my heart.”

What’s in a name? For Taiwan, a lot

A group of six French lawmakers visited Taiwan in a show of support in the face of China’s belligerence towards the island.

Francois de Rugy, who heads the France-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, said the French government had been positive about moves to strengthen ties between the sides.

“We see that a certain number of countries are obviously deploying very important armament programs. This is of course the case for China, for Russia, which is rearming itself, it is also the case with the US, which is investing in armament as well, and it is also the case with some European countries, including France, to take on challenges of new threats or risks of (power) unbalances.”

“So, in such cases, we think that Taiwan's position is particular. Taiwan is particular because it is threatened, such threats are new and very obvious. Besides, it (Taiwan) is in a zone where a new power equilibrium is yet to be built between the US and China,” Rugy said.

Another parliamentarian Aina Kuric stressed the need for democracies “to support each other” at a joint news conference on Friday.
