<p>The quake also led to the suspension of 23 trains, however, the service, according to the Urumqi Railroad Bureau, resumed after 7:00 am (local time) after safety checks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Multiple aftershocks were recorded, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the strongest of them at 5.3 magnitude.</p>

<p>The tremors from Tuesday’s earthquake were felt hundreds of kilometres away, including the Indian capital New Delhi. According to reports, tremors were also felt in neighbouring Pakistan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ma Shengyi, a 30-year-old pet shop owner living in Tacheng, 600 kilometres from the epicentre told the Associated Press that the quake was so strong her neighbours ran downstairs, while she rushed to her bathroom and started to cry.</p>

<p>“There’s no point in running away if it’s a big earthquake…I was scared to death,” said Ma.&nbsp;</p>

A report by CCTV said that authorities were considering the best use of the relief fund (that was set up days before) for the agricultural sector to resume production as soon as possible.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A local official told the news agency on Thursday that authorities were racing against time to make sure victims of Monday's earthquake were sheltered from the freezing winter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Right now, it's a race against time to meet the needs of the population as quickly as possible, so that people can spend a warm winter in complete safety," Zhou Yongfeng, an official from Gansu's Jishishan county, said.</p>

<p>Following the earthquake, a huge logistics operation unfolded with thousands of relief workers setting up shelter, food, and other facilities for the displaced, AFP reported.</p>

<p>The earthquake was China's deadliest since 2014 when more than 600 people were killed in southwestern Yunnan province.</p>

<p>On Friday, a report by CGTN said that said the first batch of 500 temporary housing units had been built for residents in Meipo, a village in Gansu as winter intensified. Many had spent the night in shelters set up in the area as temperatures plunged well below freezing point.</p>

<p>At least 113 people have been found dead in northwestern China’s Gansu province as of 9:00 am (local time) on Wednesday, and 18 were said to be killed in neighbouring Qinghai after a shallow tremor on Monday night, reported the state broadcaster CCTV.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, nearly 1,000 people were injured due to the earthquake which jolted Jishishan county near the border straddling Gansu and Qinghai provinces. CCTV reported that 78 people have been rescued in Gansu.&nbsp;<br />

In Gansu,&nbsp;more than 207,000 homes were damaged and nearly 15,000 houses collapsed affecting around&nbsp;145,000 people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The area within 50 kilometres of the epicentre in the neighbouring Qinghai province, including 22 towns and villages have been affected due to the earthquake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, two villages have sustained the most damage, reported Reuters. In the neighbouring provinces’s Minhe county around 20 people were missing after a mudslide swept through half-burying many buildings in brown silt.</p>

<h2><strong>Rescue efforts underway in sub-zero temperatures</strong></h2>

<p>Thousands of emergency responders deployed in the region after the earthquake raced against time to look for survivors and resettle them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chinese media citing researchers said that people trapped under rubble exposed to minus 10 degrees Celsius conditions could suffer from hypothermia and could only stay alive for between five and 10 hours if uninjured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A&nbsp;21-year-old&nbsp;survivor named&nbsp;Du Haiyi in&nbsp;Qinghai's quake-hit Haidong told Reuters that&nbsp;his family home had been completely levelled but he&nbsp;managed to save his mother and 16-year-old sister, who were trapped under debris the night of the quake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"My parents were pulled out from underneath this, but I don't know how," said Du, adding that they "ran to wherever we could."</p>

<p>The earthquake in Gansu prompted frightened residents out of their homes and onto the streets in the cold. Groups of survivors reportedly spent a freezing Tuesday night huddled around outdoor fires.</p>

<p>More than 128,000 emergency supply items including tents, quilts, tent lights and folding beds were supplied to victims in Gansu as well as food such as steamed buns and instant noodles.</p>

<p>China’s weather office, early Wednesday, said subzero temperatures smashed records at five stations which include provinces and regions of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The temperature in Shanxi’s city of Datong dropped to minus 33.2 degrees Celsius and minus 27 degrees Celsius in the nearby county of Yangqu.</p>

<p>“Notably, the records for all-time low temperatures (in those areas) had already been broken on December 17,” the Chinese national weather office said in a post on social media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The temperatures also plunged to record lows in Qingshuihe, Inner Mongolia (minus 29.7 degrees Celsius); Baoding, Hebei (minus 23.3 degrees Celsius); and Shunping, Hebei (minus 22 degrees Celsius).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Freezing temperatures were not the only concern of the rescue workers as Reuters citing Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau, strong aftershocks of magnitude five were still possible around the area in the coming days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The findings were said to be based on a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of the Monday quake, historical seismic activity and other factors.</p>

<p>Hours after the earthquake brought down buildings&nbsp;and left behind a trail of destruction, distressing visuals of the natural disaster are going viral on social media.</p>

<p>CCTV footage from various establishments revealed the spine-chilling moment&nbsp;when buildings shook&nbsp;and possessions tumbled due to the strong earthquake.</p>

<h2><strong>Search and rescue amid freezing temperatures</strong></h2>

<p>Rescue and relief efforts are underway and a working group has been dispatched to assess the impact of the disaster, the state media has reported. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” for search and relief work as well as ensuring the safety of the survivors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, China’s finance ministry and emergency management ministry allocated $27.9 million (200 million yuan) for the earthquake-hit Gansu and Qinghai provinces, reported CCTV.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Around 2,200 rescue personnel from various local departments as well as professional emergency rescue teams were dispatched, while military and police were also engaged in rescue work, reported the Chinese news agency.</p>

<p>The earthquake came amid a cold snap in China which had led to below-freezing temperatures in most parts of the country. Therefore, efforts are also on to prevent secondary disasters caused by factors beyond the quake, according to the Chinese news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by AFP citing footage of the quake’s aftermath from one of the worst-hit areas by CCTV shows residents warming themselves by a fire while emergency services set up tents. Power and water supplies were disrupted in some local villages, reported Xinhua.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The temperature in Linxia, Gansu, near where the quake occurred, was about minus 14 degrees Celsius&nbsp;as of Tuesday morning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the&nbsp;magnitude of the quake was 5.9 and it struck Gansu&nbsp;near the border with Qinghai, where Haidong is located. The strong tremors, according to Xinhua, were felt in many parts of neighbouring Qinghai province.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The epicentre of the earthquake is said to be five kilometres away from the border between Gansu and the neighbouring province and around 100 kilometres southwest of Gansu province’s capital, Lanzhou.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The region also saw a total of nine aftershocks at magnitude 3.0 and above, on Tuesday morning, two of which were at least 4.0 in magnitude, according to CENC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to state media agency China Central Television (CCTV), a level four response was launched by China's&nbsp;Ministry of Emergency Management.&nbsp;The earthquake also forced China Railway Group to suspend some train operations on routes including the Beijing-Shanghai Railway and Beijing-Kowloon Railway. Pingyuan, located in the central part of Dezhou, has a population of 420,000.</p>

<p>Local authorities immediately launched an emergency plan and deployed seven rescue stations and 16 fire engines. They also dispatched 93 firefighters to the epicentre for rescue and relief efforts.</p>
