Netflix's new doc 'Chaos' takes a deep dive into Charles Manson's alleged CIA connection

Cult leader Charles Manson, in a newly released prison call, accepted that he had involvement in additional killings which occurred before his assembly of the notorious "Manson Family".

Manson, who was behind the killings during the late 1960s in California, said that he “got involved in a couple of killings” when he was living in Mexico in the 1960s.&nbsp;

The audio recording was featured in a clip of Peacock’s upcoming docuseries Making Manson.

In the phone call from prison, Manson said, "See there’s a whole part of my life that nobody knows about,” Manson says in a phone call from prison. “I lived in Mexico for a while. I went to Acapulco, stole some cars. I just got involved in stuff over my head, man. Got involved in a couple of killings. I left my .357 Magnum in Mexico City, and I left some dead people on the beach.”

Charles Manson's prison phone calls emerge in docu-series, hint at more killings before 1969

Leslie Van Houten, a follower of late mass murderer Charles Manson was released from prison on Tuesday (July 11) after spending 53 years behind bars. Houten was 19 when she was charged with two murders in 1969.

Houten has been recommended for parole five times since 2016. She was sentenced for&nbsp;being involved in the murders of Leno LaBianca, a grocer in Los Angeles, and his wife Rosemary.

Her attorney Nancy Tetreault confirmed the news and said her client&nbsp;will be under parole supervision.&nbsp;

Nancy told The Guardian, "She’s really thrilled, but she’s been in prison for 53 years and turns 74 next month so this is a huge change."

She added, "She’s gratified that people are recognising that she’s completely reformed because she really is. I’ve never had a client who has dedicated herself to reform like she has. She spent 40 years in therapy and 30 years in what they call rehabilitative programming."

Admitting that Leslie fell under the influence of Charles Manson and participated in the brutal murders, Nancy said that Leslie worked really hard to get past that cult and to understand and take responsibility for the future.&nbsp;

California Governor Gavin Newsom had said last week that he won't be asking the state's Supreme Court to block her parole.

Erin Mellon, communications director for the Office of the Governor, had said,&nbsp;"The Governor is disappointed by the Court of Appeal's decision to release Ms Van Houten but will not pursue further action as efforts to further appeal are unlikely to succeed. The California Supreme Court accepts appeals in very few cases, and generally does not select cases based on this type of fact-specific determination."

A representative from Newsom's office told the news outlet, "More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal offences, the victims’ families still feel the impact, as do all Californians."

Who is Leslie Van Houten?

Leslie Louise Van Houten was born on August 23, 1949.

At the age of 14, she began taking LSD and Benzedrine and using drugs after her parents got divorced.

In 1966, she moved to Northern California where she met Catherine Share, Bobby Beausoleil, and another woman, and moved in with them.

They all joined Manson's group, who&nbsp;controlled every aspect of their lives, from food to drugs.

On August 9, 1969, Van Houten, along with Tex Watson, Patricia Krenwinkel, Linda Kasabian, Clem Grogan, and Manson, went to Rosemary and LaBianca's house and killed the couple. Manson&nbsp;allegedly sent other people in the group to kill an actor.

When asked, Manson denied all responsibility and never explained the motive for the murder.

However, prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi suggested that Manson wanted to start a racial civil war.

Manson died behind bars in 2017 at the age of 83 after nearly 50 years in prison.

Van Houten's Parole

In the most recent parole denial, Newsom said that Houten still poses a danger to society. Rejecting her parole, he said she offered an inconsistent and inadequate explanation for her involvement in the killings.

However, the second district court of appeal ruled 2-1 to reverse Newsom's decision, stating that there is no evidence to support the governor's conclusion.

In the May decision, the judges took issue with Newsom's claim that Houten did not adequately explain how she fell under Manson's influence.

At her hearings, she explained how her parents' divorce, her drug and alcohol abuse, and a forced illegal abortion led her down a path that left her vulnerable.

They argued, "Van Houten has shown extraordinary rehabilitative efforts, insight, remorse, realistic parole plans, support from family and friends, favourable institutional reports, and, at the time of the governor's decision, had received four successive grants of parole."

He played Manson in director Quentin Tarantino`s big-screen drama `Once Upon a Time in Hollywood` and the second season of Netflix`s `Mindhunter`.

However, it turns out, receiving both roles wasn`t pre-planned, but it was all just a "coincidence," reported People.

"Bizarrely, it was a coincidence. Two productions happened to have a Charles Manson character in them, and I had an opportunity to audition for both. That`s pretty much it," Herriman told Vulture.

"If you`re going for a character like Charles Manson, you can only cast people of a certain height, so that narrows the pool because the guy was incredibly short. A lot shorter than me, but I`m only 5`7``, so I scraped into the pool," Herriman continued.

Though `Once Upon a Time in Hollywood` released first, hitting theatres last month, Herriman actually received a role in `Mindhunter` before that.

The character in `Once Upon a Time in Hollywood` came after fellow Australian actor Nicholas Hammond and Herriman`s former `Justified` costar Timothy Olyphant, suggested Tarantino to consider Herriman.

"Together they brought up my name when they`d heard that Manson hadn`t been cast yet and suggested me to Quentin," Herriman said to Vulture.

"I didn`t think that would be a great idea because at that point I already had Mindhunter. I thought that even going for the same character again was a completely fruitless exercise, but I also didn`t want to not do an audition for Quentin Tarantino." "Luckily for me, it didn`t bother him," Herriman added.

Both projects wrapped up shooting within two weeks of one another, Herriman revealed.

Those two weeks were "as weird as it sounds, but also very cool," Herriman said.&nbsp;

Tarantino's 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood', an ode to a bygone Hollywood era, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton, an actor coming to terms with his faltering career and living next door to Polanski and Tate, who is played by Margot Robbie.

It was <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/quentin-tarantino-rolls-into-cannes-with-dazzling-ode-to-cinema-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-220537">screened for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival</a> on Tuesday evening, drawing often a rapturous response from critics who praised its darkly comic moments, outrageous plot twists and evocative period atmosphere.

Asked at a news conference on Wednesday whether he had discussed his interpretation of events with Polanski at any point, Tarantino said: "No, I didn't."

He earlier said that he had met the Franco-Polish director "a couple of times" over the years, and was a fan of his work, including the 1968 psychological horror film 'Rosemary's Baby'.

Tate, aged 26 and eight months pregnant, was killed along with four friends at her Los Angeles home in August 1969 by members of a cult led by Charles Manson. Polanski was away on business in Europe at the time.

Manson, who was convicted of ordering the deaths of nine people in total, died in prison at age 83 in November 2017.

The murders carried out by Manson's mainly young, female devotees shocked the world and badly damaged the peace-and-love, hippie ethos of the late 1960s - something which resonated with the cast of 'Once Upon A Time'.

"In the time building up to that (point), there was a free love movement," Brad Pitt, who plays Dalton's stunt double and longtime friend Cliff Booth, told the news conference. "It was a sobering dark look at the dark side of human nature, and that pivotal moment was a real loss of innocence."

"I REJECT YOUR HYPOTHESIS"

While the movie lingers on an encounter between Cliff and the creepy, young hippie drifters who made up the 'Manson Family'&nbsp;on an abandoned desert ranch they had taken over outside Los Angeles, and Tate comes and goes, it's more than anything a love letter to the film industry.

Tarantino - who issued a plea before the premiere asking for viewers to refrain from spoiler alerts - celebrates the industry's kitsch moments, pays homage to spaghetti westerns and martial arts stars, and delves into the pains of being on a film set as well as the uplifting power of performance.

DiCaprio said he was able to identify with Dalton's feeling of being a Hollywood outsider, even in his position as one of the industry's highest-grossing stars.

"I have a lot of friends in the industry and I know how lucky I am to be in this opportunity," DiCaprio said, adding he'd "immediately connected" with the character. "This guy is seen not only struggling with his own pathos, his own ability to gain confidence and persevere and get that next job."

Tarantino submitted 'Once Upon a Time In Hollywood'&nbsp;just in time to compete for the Cannes festival's top Palme d'Or prize, 25 years after pop culture classic 'Pulp Fiction'&nbsp;won it.

Tarantino includes nods to his own movies in his ninth feature, which has been described by some critics as self-indulgent and overly long at times, even if nearly all found enough to like in its show-stealing scenes.

"It wasn't meant to be ridiculously self-conscious, but there is a thing about summing up certain things, which I wasn't necessarily trying to do, but they started appearing," he said.

Tarantino said that one of his long-time collaborators and first people to see the new script had joked upon reading it: "Damn! Number nine is like all eight of them put together."

"I hadn't thought about it like that," said Tarantino, whose other notable films include 'True Romance', 'Jackie Brown' and 'Inglourious Basterds'.

Tarantino bluntly shut down a journalist who said he had given Robbie very few lines in the film, even though she has screen time. "I reject your hypothesis," he said.

Wilson introduced Manson to music producer Terry Melcher, who later snubbed him. Melcher, along with his then-girlfriend, actress Candice Bergen, had previously rented the Benedict Canyon house.

Co-defendants Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel cut &quot;X&quot;s in their foreheads, shaved their scalps, sang Manson-written songs and giggled through chilling testimony.

At one point, Manson tried to leap over the defense table at the judge, snarling: &quot;In the name of Christian justice, someone should cut your head off.&quot; The judge began carrying a gun afterward.

Manson ultimately was brought down by his followers. Atkins told two inmates about the Tate-LaBianca murders while she was jailed in an unrelated killing, then testified to a grand jury before recanting. Prosecutors then persuaded another follower, Linda Kasabian, to testify against the rest of the group in exchange for immunity.

Convicted along with Manson, his three co-defendants, Atkins, Van Houten and Krenwinkel, also had their death sentences reduced to life terms.

Charles Manson, the wild-eyed cult leader who orchestrated a string of gruesome killings in Southern California by his "family" of young followers, shattering the peace-and-love ethos of the late 1960s, died on Sunday, prison officials said. He was 83. Manson died of natural causes Sunday evening at a Kern County hospital, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement. It gave no further details of the circumstances surrounding his death. He had been serving a life sentence at the nearby Corcoran State Prison for ordering the murders of nine people, including actress Sharon Tate. Long after Manson had largely faded from headlines, he loomed large as a symbol of the terror he unleashed in the summer of 1969. "The very name Manson has become a metaphor for evil," the late Vincent Bugliosi, who prosecuted Manson, told the Los Angeles Times in 1994. A recent photograph showed the gray-bearded killer's face still bearing the scar of a swastika he carved into his forehead decades earlier. Manson became one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals when he directed his mostly young, female followers to murder seven people in what prosecutors said was part of a plan to incite a race war. GRAFFITI WITH VICTIMS' BLOOD Tate, aged 26 and eight months pregnant, was stabbed 16 times in the early morning hours of Aug. 9, 1969, by members of Manson's cult at the rented hillside house she shared with her husband, filmmaker Roman Polanski, in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles. Four friends of the celebrity couple, including coffee heiress Abigail Folger and hairstylist Jay Sebring, were also stabbed or shot to death that night by Manson followers, who scrawled the word "Pig" in blood on the home's front door before leaving. Polanski was away in Europe at the time. The following night, members of Manson's group stabbed grocery owner Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary to death, using their blood to write, "Death to Pigs" and "Healter Skelter" - a misspelled reference to the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" - on the walls and refrigerator door. Although Manson did not personally kill any of the seven victims, he was found guilty of ordering their murders. He was later convicted of ordering the murders of music teacher Gary Hinman, stabbed to death in July 1969, and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea, stabbed and bludgeoned that August. Manson was sentenced to death for the Tate-LaBianca murders, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison after the California Supreme Court abolished capital punishment in the state in 1972. Born Charles Milles Maddox on Nov. 12, 1934, in Cincinnati to a 16-year-old girl, Manson spent much of his youth shuttled between relatives and juvenile detention halls. By age 13, he had been convicted of armed robbery. Newly paroled from prison in 1967, he began attracting members of his "family" in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district, which had become a haven for the hippie youth culture. The group moved with his followers to the Los Angeles area, eventually settling at Spahn Ranch, site of an outdoor movie location used for Western films and TV shows. Communal sex and drug use were a way of life as Manson became a messiah to the runaways, outcasts and criminals drawn by his charisma, intimidation and twisted spiritualism. One follower told authorities she had seen Manson bring a bird back to life by breathing on it. Another said he could see and hear everything she did and said. Manson aspired to be a rock star, and through one of his followers befriended Dennis Wilson, drummer of the Beach Boys, who would go on base their 1969 song "Never Learn Not to Love" on a Manson composition. Wilson introduced Manson to music producer Terry Melcher, who later snubbed him. Melcher, along with his then-girlfriend, actress Candice Bergen, had previously rented the Benedict Canyon house. The brutality of the killings stunned the nation. "There was a lot of fear," Bugliosi, author of the chilling book about the murders, "Helter Skelter," told the Times in 1994. "The words printed in blood made it especially frightening for the Hollywood crowd." SENSATIONAL TRIAL Denied his request to represent himself during his 9-1/2 month trial, Manson showed up in court with an "X" carved into his forehead, and would later alter it into a swastika. Co-defendants Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel cut "X"s in their foreheads, shaved their scalps, sang Manson-written songs and giggled through chilling testimony. At one point, Manson tried to leap over the defense table at the judge, snarling: "In the name of Christian justice, someone should cut your head off." The judge began carrying a gun afterward. Manson ultimately was brought down by his followers. Atkins told two inmates about the Tate-LaBianca murders while she was jailed in an unrelated killing, then testified to a grand jury before recanting. Prosecutors then persuaded another follower, Linda Kasabian, to testify against the rest of the group in exchange for immunity. Convicted along with Manson, his three co-defendants, Atkins, Van Houten and Krenwinkel, also had their death sentences reduced to life terms. Manson long maintained his innocence, telling Rolling Stone magazine that follower Charles "Tex" Watson was responsible for the Tate-LaBianca killings. Watson was tried separately and is serving a life term for his role in those killings. Still, Manson seemed resigned to a life of incarceration, ceasing to even attend his parole review hearings after 1997. "What would I want out for?" he said in a telephone interview with the Los Angeles Times. "This beats an old folks home." In April 2012, Manson was quoted by parole officials as having told a prison psychologist the previous fall: "I have put five people in the grave. I've been in prison most of my life. I'm a very dangerous man."
