Champions League, Watch: Toni Kroos delivers inch-perfect pass for Vinicius opener during Bayern-Madrid clash

Ahead of the UEFA Champions League Real Madrid-Bayern Munich high-voltage semifinal clash, i.e. the first leg, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that his side isn't taking their opposition lightly despite the German club's poor domestic season. Ancelotti, who has won the UCL four times, further labelled the German side 'dangerous' prior to the first leg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. Madrid are coming into this game as favourites after eliminating holders Manchester City in the last round.

Before the semifinal tie, Ancelotti said in a news conference, "We're preparing to play a big team with lots of qualities. We are confident and have faith but we have respect for Bayern Munich. They haven't played a fantastic season in the Bundesliga but they played very well in two matches against Arsenal. This shows the quality of this club."

The Italian manager further added, "They are strong in transition, they can play in different ways and are very dangerous. We need to focus and take ourselves to the final, that's our goal."

Valverde said, "All the matches are complicated in this competition. All the teams deserve respect, Bayern Munich above all. The same as Real Madrid they always make it until the end. We respect them in the same way we respect Manchester City. We need to show great performances with the quality that we have and we want to win this title.

"I've got to maybe score a few goals next week. It's there, it's in touching distance," he added.

As for Bayern, the season has been a forgetful one as they failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in 12 years. They also faced a humiliating defeat in German Cup third-round against third-tier Saarbrucken.

The only hope for them to win any silverware is the Champions League where they beat Premier League leaders and possible winners of ongoing season Arsenal in quarterfinal earlier this month.

Can Barcelona reach the first semis since 2019?

Not since 2019 have Barcelona reached the semifinals of the Champions League having since seen a slump of form. The five-time champions will enter the second leg with a 3-2 advantage having seized the opportunity in Paris last week. Pedri was the centre of attraction during the match having helped scored one and assisted one during his return to the side. Kylian Mbappe and Co will have their work cut out as they will have to win the match to reach the last four.

PSG’s best performance in the competition came in 2020 when they reached the final before losing to Bayern Munich. With Mbappe likely to play in his final season with the club, he will look to depart on a high. PSG are all set to win the French Ligue and a Champions League crown will only help them win a double this season.

Ateltico Madrid on the other hand have been runners-up on three occasions – 1974, 2014 and 2016.

Champions League: Barcelona eye SF berth against Kylian Mbappe's PSG; Dortmund face Simone's Atletico

Brazil forward Raphinha scored twice to help Barcelona secure a 3-2 win at Paris St Germain in a lively Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday, earning the Spanish side their first win in the knockout stage in four years.

PSG forward Kylian Mbappe was nowhere to be found in Parc des Princes as five-times European champions Barca managed to neutralise France's captain, who was often frustrated in his attempts up front. PSG came into the match unbeaten in their last 27 games in all competitions but were undone by a fired-up Barcelona side looking to return the club to the summit of European football.

After a glorious run from 2005-15, winning four Champions League titles, Barca failed to get past the last 16 in Europe's elite competition in three consecutive seasons after being humiliated 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 quarter-finals.

"We should be proud to say that Barca is alive," manager Xavi Hernandez told reporters.

"We understood how we had to work against one of the best teams in the world. It's a small advantage but a victory that generates even more excitement in our city and within our fans."

Xavi's side dominated proceedings early on against the French side still looking for a first Champions League crown. Raphinha gave the visitors the lead with a rebound strike in the 37th minute after goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to clear a cross from his box.

Donnarumma looked nervous throughout the match, showing bad timing and making errors that almost led to Barcelona scoring the opener earlier in the first half.

However, PSG looked transformed after the break with manager Luis Enrique, a former Barca player and coach, switching things up and bringing on forward Bradley Barcola for Marco Asensio.

The attacking change resulted in the equaliser in the 48th minute when former Barca winder Ousmane Dembele smashed the ball into the top corner after scooping a rebound inside the box and making a quick cut to his left, before unleashing a unstoppable shot between three defenders.

Barca were still reeling when the hosts took the lead through Vitinha who stroked the ball in two minutes later from a quick counter attack and substitute Bradley Barcola almost scored the third minutes later when his close-range strike hit the cross bar.

But Raphinha's deft volley in the 62nd minute from a brilliant long pass by substitute Pedri brought the match level again, silencing the home crowd.

Andreas Christensen came off the bench to take advantage of a static Donnarumma to jump unchallenged in the six-yard-box and head in from a corner 13 minutes from time to give the Spanish side a narrow advantage going into next week's second leg.

"It was a spectacular night, not only for me, but for the team as well," Raphinha told reporters. "We have been working very hard to come out and play like we did, showing our grit with such a good atmosphere is a very positive sign moving forward.

ATLETICO DOWN DORTMUND 2-1

Atletico Madrid struck twice in a dominant first half but had to survive a late fightback from Borussia Dortmund before earning a 2-1 win in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday. The Spaniards were in complete control in the first half but had to soak up late pressure from the Germans who cut the deficit with Sebastien Haller in the 81st minute and then twice hit the woodwork.

"We won, which is the important thing," said man-of-the-match Antoine Griezmann. "The end of the game doesn't matter. It's a shame about the goal we conceded and that feeling of being behind defending. "There were moments when we could have scored a third but the truth is that we have suffered a lot in the second half."

"But it's a very important to win. Now we need to go there and hopefully we can win. We know we have the level to reach the semis, we have demonstrated that on the pitch," added the France international.

Atletico, looking for their first semi-final spot in seven years, put the visitors on the backfoot with a frenetic high-pressing game and it paid off after four minutes with Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel delaying a pass to Ian Maatsen and Rodrigo De Paul intercepting it to slot in.

Only three minutes later Kobel pulled off a sensational one-handed save to push Axel Witsel's backheel flick over the bar but the Germans were seriously struggling to get the ball out of their own half. Their best chance was a low show by Maatsen that Atletico keeper Jan Oblak pushed wide.

DORTMUND MISTAKES

The Spanish side scored again courtesy of another defensive blunder as Samuel Lino, who will miss the return leg next week after being booked, doubled their lead in the 32nd from an Antoine Griezmann assist.

The introduction of Julian Brandt after the break instantly gave Dortmund more punch up front but Lino forced another superb Kobel save in the 75th front before Sebastien Haller cut the deficit in the 81st minute to improve the Germans' odds going into next Tuesday's return leg. Defender Mats Hummels, making his 500th appearance for Dortmund, then kept them in the game, slid in to stop Angel Correa.

The Germans missed two chances to equalise late in the game, with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens' deflected shot in the 87th bouncing off the crossbar and Brandt's last-gasp header also hitting the woodwork in stoppage time.

"Everything remains open," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. "The first 30 minutes were not good enough. Often, at this level, it's already over if you make so many mistakes. But we didn't accept that and still managed to show what we're capable of."

"We made too many mistakes. In the end, a draw wouldn't have been undeserved. Now we look forward to what's coming in six days. Today, we felt what they want and now we know what we have to do at home," he added.

Security had been tightened around the Metropolitano stadium following a threat of attacks by the resurgent Islamic State militant group with hundreds of officers inside and outside the stadium.

Also read: Harry Kane addresses Premier League return rumours after Bundesliga title loss "We understood how we had to work against one of the best teams in the world. It's a small advantage but a victory that generates even more excitement in our city and within our fans." Xavi's side dominated proceedings early on against the French side still looking for a first Champions League crown. "There were moments when we could have scored a third but the truth is that we have suffered a lot in the second half." "But it's a very important to win.
Real Madrid-Man City settle for draw

The tie which was the attraction of the football world did not fail to produce goods as City’s Bernardo Silva opened the scoring in the third minute of the match. Silva converted a direct free kick which helped open City their account. The free kick was only given to City after Aurélien Tchouaméni brought down Jack Grealish just outside the penalty area.

However, City’s lead did not last long as Eduardo Camavinga’s 12th-minute effort saw a wild deflection which landed in the City goal for Real’s equaliser. Within 100 seconds of the equaliser, it was Real that took the lead after Brazilian winger Rodrygo was let through on goal while goalkeeper Stefan Ortega failed to clear his line. The score would then remain 2-1 in favour of Real Madrid until the final quarter of the first leg.

However, a classic finish from the outside of the 18-yard box saw Phil Foden score City’s equaliser leaving Bernabéu silent. Within five minutes of that goal, City would again gain the lead after Josko Gvardiol scored his first goal for the club. Like Foden’s effort, he too struck the ball from outside the box before beating the goalkeeper.

While it looked like City were cruising to another win at the Bernabéu, it was a neatly taken first-time shot from Federico Valverde in the 79th minute that saw Real get their second equaliser of the night. There were no more goals on the night as both teams would settle for a draw.

In the night’s other quarterfinal first leg, Arsenal and Bayern Munich played an entertaining 2-2 draw. Arsenal opened the scoring through Saka’s neatly taken shot before former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry got Bayern back in the game. Bayern were then awarded a penalty which was dispatched by former Tottenham man Harry Kane. Bayern were on the verge of a win before substitute Leandro Trossard found the back of the net in the 76th minute.

Both ties will now head to the second leg which will take place on the evening of Wednesday (April 17).

Champions League: Real Madrid-Man City settle for frantic draw as do Bayern-Arsenal

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel believes his side's extensive experience in the Champions League could give them the edge as they prepare to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

Bayern, who have won the European Cup six times, visit the Gunners in their first-leg clash on Tuesday (April 9). Arsenal's best showing in the elite competition was reaching the 2006 final.

History favours Bayern, as this marks the fifth Champions League clash in the knockout stages between the two teams, with the Germans prevailing on all four previous occasions.

Tuchel conceded Bayern's overall form this season deserved criticism after some lacklustre displays. They are 16 points adrift of leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and were dumped out of the German Cup by third-tier Saarbruecken.

In-form Arsenal will be seeking to set the record straight when they face Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday (April 9) but will be wary of a familiar face who simply loves scoring against the Gunners.

The last time the two clubs clashed in the competition in 2017, Bayern Munich won both legs of their last-16 tie 5-1 - a humiliating outcome that underlined Arsenal's decline.

Arsenal only returned to the Champions League this season and have thrived, reaching their first quarter-final since the 2009-10 season while challenging for the Premier League title.

Such is their form and Bayern's current struggles that they will go up against the six-times champions as favourites to set up a clash against either Manchester City or Real Madrid.

But the sight of former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane in Munich's ranks will be a concern for the home faithful.

Kane scored a record 14 goals in 19 North London derbies and the England captain will be fired-up to bring his former team's rivals and current Premier League leaders back down to earth.

While Arsenal are potentially seven matches away from winning their first English title for 20 years, Bayern have fallen way short of their normal standards in the Bundesliga and are 16 points behind runaway leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern will have no fans at The Emirates on Tuesday as punishment for fireworks being thrown in the previous round against Lazio and Arteta has called on the home supporters to make the atmosphere a cauldron.

Champions League: Coach Thomas Tuchel hoping for Bayern's experience to come handy against Arsenal

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he is realistic enough to know that securing a place in next season's Champions League will be difficult with the club 11 points out of fourth place and a growing injury list to contend with. United, who are sixth in the Premier League, have played two games fewer than fourth-placed Aston Villa and will look to close the gap to eight points when they play at Chelsea later on Thursday.

With Tottenham Hotspur one place above them in fifth, United have their work cut out to claim a place in Europe's elite club competition. "I know it will be very difficult because we are not in a good position," said Ten Hag. "But we want to win every game, that is the standard we have here ... We have to catch up. But I also know we have had a lot of problems so I am a realistic man.

Explained: The new UEFA champions league format

Porto manager Sergio Conceicao has alleged that his Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta insulted his family during the Champions League round-of-16 clash at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday (Mar 12) night.

Speaking after the match where his team crashed out of the continental tournament following penalties, Conceicao made the allegations.

“During the game and towards the bench … I don’t know if this is to do with Spanish managers, because it was the same thing with [Pep] Guardiola, he insulted my family," said Conceicao.

“In the end, I told him to pay attention because the person he insulted is no longer with us, and I told him to worry about coaching his team, because due to individual quality he has an obligation to do more and better."

The two managers were seen exchanging words after the tense penalty shoot-out which Arteta's team won 4-2 as the tie ended 1-1 on aggregate after the end of two legs.

Quizzed about Conceicao's statement, Arteta simply replied: “Thanks. No comment.”

Porto squandered their one goal lead from the first tie as Leandro Trossard slotted one to the back of the net in the 40th minute. Apart from the goal, Arsenal did not have many chances in the game as Porto kept a resolute mid-to-low block and ensured that Arteta's men could not play their natural game.

Conceicao's previous allegations

Notably, after Porto's UCL match against Manchester City in 2020, Conceicao made similar remarks, suggesting that Guardiola had insulted his bench.

"I’ve got a lot to learn from Pep Guardiola, in the way he pressures referees, talks to opposition players and the opposition dugout. He’s a fantastic example. I have to learn this. We were angels compared to the other dugout. He spoke about our country using ugly words. Guardiola’s attitude was extremely unpleasant."

Later in the same season, Conceicao also accused the then-Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel of “insulting” him.

"I was insulted by this man who is next door. I told the referee that the fourth referee heard the insults. My English is not perfect, there is no point in talking about it. There was no exchange of words because I was focused on the game, I don’t know why he reacted."

Marko Arnautovic gave Inter Milan a single-goal advantage in their Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid after netting the only goal in Tuesday's hard-fought 1-0 win.

Austria striker Arnautovic replaced Marcus Thuram at half-time and rammed home Inter's winner with 11 minutes left at the San Siro after Jan Oblak failed to hold Lautaro Martinez's shot.

The 34-year-old turned jeers into deafening cheers with his goal, which came after a series of missed opportunities left home fans wondering whether Inter would get the win their performance deserved.

His worst miss came just after the hour mark when he ballooned over a sitter, a dreadful finish which came before and after failed attempts to latch on to promising balls.

"It is certainly one of the most important goals of my career," said Arnautovic to Sky Sport.

"In recent weeks I've missed a lot of chances. But the fans and the players showed they are behind me... It gave me the energy I needed to score the goal."

Arnautovic has had a hard time since returning to Inter on loan from Bologna last summer and those misses further frustrated supporters.

However, thanks to him Simone Inzaghi's side, who are nine points clear at the top of Serie A, take a slender lead to Madrid where they will face Atletico in the decisive second leg on March 13.

Atletico have been a more attacking proposition this season but retreated into the dogged defensive mode more representative of Diego Simeone's long reign in Spain.

They could not keep Inter out and now have to overturn Tuesday's result in order to reach the quarter-finals.

"We have to keep our heads up, there is one game left and we are going to do everything possible to to get through," said Oblak to Movistar.

"They had two or three chances when we weren't perfect and in a game like this you have to be perfect all the time."

Arnautovic redeemed

A cagey first half between two resolute teams left fans with little to shout about, with only a few pot shots getting supporters off their seats until the 36th minute, when Martinez saw his powerful header from Nicolo Barella's cross saved by Oblak.

And moments later Martinez left Inter fans with their heads in their hands after uncharacteristically wasting a golden opportunity to open the scoring.

Martinez was handed a clear chance after Marcus Thuram intercepted Rodrigo De Paul's wayward pass and burst towards Oblak's goal, only for the Argentina forward to scuff his effort off Jose Maria Gimenez.

Thuram then had a powerful effort of his own easily saved by Oblak as Inter finished the opening half in the ascendency.

However the France forward hurt his right thigh while taking that shot and he was replaced at half-time by match-winner Arnautovic, who three minutes after the break could not quite direct Federico Dimarco's teasing cross on target.

Samuel Lino, who curled a decent effort wide in the first half, wasted Atletico's best chance of the night in the 56th minute when he fluffed his finish from a tight angle after exchanging passes with Rodrigo De Paul.

And Arnautovic, who has had a hard time since his return, did himself no favours when he shot over the bar when it looked easier to score.

But he was submerged by delighted teammates when he forced home the winner, which was just reward for a display which highlighted why Simeone said on Monday that Inter were one of the five best teams in Europe.

However the tight nature of the tie was evident when substitute Alvaro Morata headed wide when presented with a great chance to take Atletico back to Madrid level.

Champions League: Marko Arnautovic gives Inter Milan slender advantage over Atletico Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said on Tuesday that he expects Kylian Mbappe to be unhindered by a recent ankle knock when his side face Real Sociedad in their Champions League last-16 first leg.

Mbappe was rested for PSG's Ligue 1 win over Lille at the weekend to make sure he was fully fit for Wednesday's clash against La Real at the Parc des Princes.

"When a team has a player at the level of Kylian Mbappe, the more he plays, the better it is for the team," Luis Enrique told a pre-match press conference.

"He could have played four days ago but it wasn't worth the risk."

PSG are bidding to avoid a third consecutive last-16 exit from the Champions League.

Mbappe has scored 30 goals for the club in all competitions this season and teammate Fabian Ruiz is confident he will be raring to go.

"I am sure Mbappe is going to have a great match," said Spain midfielder Ruiz.

"He received a knock but he trained yesterday and today he is in good shape to play."

Mbappe is out of contract with the French champions in June and has been heavily linked with finally making a move to Real Madrid.

But Luis Enrique refused to consider whether the match against Sociedad could prove to be Mbappe's last Champions League game at the Parc des Princes.

"Potential last game? No. That's not the way I feel it and therefore I feel neither joy nor sadness, it's business as usual," he said.

Real Sociedad are aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1983 after finishing top of Group D ahead of Inter Milan.

Former Real Betis player Ruiz warned PSG not to underestimate their opponents after avoiding Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the draw despite finishing second in their group behind Borussia Dortmund.

"I am quite familiar with Real Sociedad. They are an organised team, they exert a lot of pressure and like to have the ball and use counter-pressing, and they do it very well," he said.

"Tomorrow is a very important match for us but the atmosphere in the group remains the same -- there is excitement but at the same time we remain calm and focused."

Champions League: PSG's Kylian Mbappe fit to play against Real Sociedad in first leg of Round of 16

The Champions League Round of 16 is all set to take centrestage as top clubs prepare for the final push for glory in Europe’s top club competition. While the eyes of the clubs are on the prize asset, the bosses at UEFA (European football’s governing body) are fighting to keep the integrity of the competition alive. The European Super League (ESL) could emerge as a major player with top clubs set to join the breakaway league from UEFA. However, can the ESL surpass the legacy of the Champions League (previously the European Cup) as the tussle between UEFA and ESL intensifies?

Champions League’s importance

Starting in the 1955-56 season with the name of the European Cup, the Champions League has been the apex competition of football for more than 60 years. While the competition carries equal weightage as the AFC Champions League (Asia) winner and the Copa Libertadores (South Africa), the European version of the club competition ranks highest as some of the finest players and teams have played in the competition.

Since its inception in the 1955-56 season, big-name players have competed in the competition with fierce rivalry between clubs being a highlight. The quality of competition is often better than other continental competitions which have attracted a big fan base. The big fan base has attracted big-money TV deals which have resulted in high financial capital flow in the competition.

European Super League concept

The ESL is a make-away European league concept consisting of a cluster of top continental clubs which included the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona along with the ‘big six’ Premier League sides. The cluster also included the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan before the plan was scrapped amid big protests by fans. Upon criticism, 10 of the 12 clubs pulled out of the European Super League while UEFA decided to levy hefty fines on them. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona though did not back out and are still part of the plan.

Withdrawal of English clubs was seen as a major setback as they could have attracted big-money TV deals which could have helped the ESL grow financially. Currently, TV deals in England are sold for more than $5 billion for a period ranging between four to seven years. The figure is comparatively low for other leagues.

Why Champions League remains a big player?

Anticipating a breakaway league was on its way and more teams wanting to qualify and earn hefty sums from the competition, UEFA from the 2024-25 season will increase the pool of teams from 32 to 36. This will give clubs better opportunity to qualify or participate in the Champions League. Considering the rich history of the competition fans, players and the majority of the clubs want to participate in the competition.

Financially the competition attracts the second-biggest TV and commercial deal in football after the English Premier League. Comparing this to the ESL, it will be hard for them to attract big-money deals as top English clubs are unlikely to play in the competition.

Heritage of competition

In its almost 70-year history, winning the Champions League is often considered the biggest achievement for players who are unlikely to win the World Cup. It is often the parameter of success for African and small nation players to get their names in the history books. Players like Ryan Giggs, Gareth Bale, Yaya Toure and Luka Modric are often considered the greatest of their generations, but they are unlikely to win the World Cup with the national side due to limited resources, it is the Champions League that bails them out.

Interestingly, Ballon d’Or winners like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema have also seen their legacy forged by the winner’s medal in the Champions League as they are yet to win the FIFA World Cup.

Another factor contributing to the legacy of the competition is the format, since the 2003-04 season only the best teams have made it through to the later rounds of the competitions. Unlike the FA Cup and the League Cup, the Champions League knockout stage is played over two legs, ensuring only the best and deserved teams have lifted the trophy.

ESL’s dull format

ESL’s format on the other side has divided opinions with teams and fans disliking the divisional structure of the competition. As announced in December, 64 teams will be part of the ESL and will be divided into three categories. These categories are Gold (top division), Silver (second division) and Blue (third division). The Gold and Silver Leagues will see the inclusion of 16 teams each while Blue League will have 32 teams.

Explained | Why Champions League is the biggest club competition despite rise of European Super League

Veteran Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Mueller has extended his deal by one year to 2025, the Bavarian club announced on Tuesday.

"I'm happy my journey at FC Bayern is continuing. I want to play my part in us remaining successful, both as a team and the whole club," Mueller said in a statement.

Mueller's contract was set to expire at the end of this season.

Calling Mueller "quality and reliability personified", Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said the veteran was "a leader on and off the pitch, always a role model and incredibly valuable for the entire team".

Despite wearing the captain's armband several times this season, the 34-year-old has received less game time under coach Thomas Tuchel, enjoying just five league starts.

Mueller has become synonymous with the Bavarian giants and has been at Bayern for more than two decades, having joined as a 10-year-old in 2000 from village club TSV Paehl, located just 50 kilometres from Munich.

A two-time Champions League winner, Mueller has won 12 Bundesliga titles with Bayern in a career spanning 684 games, scoring 237 goals and providing 261 assists.

Only former Bayern goalkeeper Sepp Maier has played more games for the club and only Gerd Mueller, with 568, and Robert Lewandowski, with 344, have more goals for the club.

For Germany, Mueller was first called up in March of 2010, where he played in a 1-0 defeat to Argentina.

The Champions League group stage for the 2023-24 season came to a nervy end on Wednesday (Dec 13) evening as 16 teams made it through to the knockout stage. Unlike any other season, the group stage produced another fine spectacle as Premier League giants Manchester United and Newcastle United bowed out at the initial stage. They will now have to wait until next season before they can claim their place in the knockouts. However, that won’t be easy for sides across Europe as next season will mark the revamp of the Champions League group stage and will be based on the Swiss League model with 36 teams participating in the continental tournament’s initial stage.

How did the previous model work?

Since 2003-04, the Champions League had adopted a simple model of eight groups of four teams each; thereby 32 teams participating in the tournament. Group winners and group runners-up would qualify for the knockout stage consisting of 16 teams after each team played six matches in the group stage. Each team in the group played the rest of the three teams twice (once home and once away) and teams were ranked according to the number of points collected (three points for a win, one for a draw and none for defeat).

How will the new model work?

From the 2024-25 season of the Champions League there will be 36 teams that will participate in the tournament. Therefore, there will be four additional teams in the competition compared to previous seasons of the Champions League. There will be four groups of nine teams each now. Like the traditional group stage, the teams will play every other opponent in the group, however, unlike the previous format the teams will meet only once (in the previous format teams from the same group met twice).

Therefore each team will play eight group stage matches with no home-away format for a particular tie. Each team will play four matches on home ground and four matches on away ground. UEFA (European football’s governing body) has not yet cleared the permutations on how the away and home matches of a particular team will be decided.

With the same points format (three points for a win, one for a draw and none for defeat) all the 36 teams will be ranked according to their performance in the group stage. The top eight teams from the revised rankings based on group stage performance will directly qualify for the Round of the 16 while teams ranked from 9th to 24th will play in a playoff round (not cleared by UEFA whether it will be single or double leg).

The top eight teams will then be joined by the eight playoff round winners as they will contest the Round of 16 in a two-legged (home-away) format. This will be followed by a two-legged quarterfinal and a two-legged semifinal. Teams reaching the final will meet in the Champions League final (single leg) at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena in May 2025.

How many matches will be played in the CL season?

Under the current format, excluding the qualification rounds, teams play a total of 125 matches in the Champions League season. This includes 96 matches in the group stage (12 matches each in eight groups) while two-legged ties during the Round of 16 (16 matches), quarterfinal (8 matches) and semifinal (4 matches) constitute 28 matches. The single leg final takes the total season count for the Champions League to 125 matches.

Under the new format, there will be 36 matches in one group as each team will play every other opponent once. With four such groups on offer, the total number of group stage matches will be 144, a net increase of 48 group stage matches from the previous format. If teams meet in a two-legged playoff round to decide qualification for the Round of 16, it will constitute 16 matches.

Like the previous format, the Round of 16 (16 matches), quarterfinal (8 matches) and semifinal (4 matches) will constitute 28 matches. Adding the 16 playoff matches and the final at the neutral venue in Munich, there will be 45 knockout stage matches in the Champions League. This will result in 16 more knockout stage matches compared to the previous format; taking the overall count for the season to 189 Champions League matches (64 more matches than the previous format).

In case the playoff round for the Round of 16 is played in a single-legged tie (one match only), then the total number of knockout stage matches will be 37 while there will be 181 matches in the entire Champions League season (56 more matches than previous format).

How will the schedule work?

Under the current format, there are six matchdays in the Champions League for all the six matches each team plays. However, with eight matches to be played by each team in the group stage, UEFA will have to find two more matchdays to accommodate the new schedule for the Champions League calendar. This could even result in group stage matches being played over the weekends while the playoff round for the Round of 16 could also be hosted in January of each year (Champions League matches have never been hosted in January before).

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag says that there's still a lot left to play for after his club's exit from the Champions League following the loss against Bayern Munich on Tuesday (Dec. 12). It was United's 12th loss across tournaments this season and seventh at home.

"There are still many things to play for and now we can focus, of course, on the Premier League. This is the level we want to play, the Champions League, so we have to give every effort to be in the top four and next year be back in the Champions League. Then we have the FA Cup, so there are so many things to play for," said Ten Hag after the crushing 1-0 loss.

He acknowledged that the whole group is disappointed with the result, and so is he since he is the manager. Man United next play against table-toppers Liverpool in the English Premier League (EPL) at Anfield on Sunday, December 17. They, however, have been plagued with injuries too as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw suffered muscle injuries against Bayern. Both the players could miss the Sunday trip and Ten Hag isn't excited about it.

"We are losing players and players who are very decisive for our game, who can make the difference and in many games it was also the case in this campaign," said Ten Hag. "We had not always the players available we want to play. That's definitely a part.

"Now I give you a reason, but don't see it as an excuse because even when we are not all on board, we still have to win because they are targets that belong to Manchester United."

The Red Devils, who finished fourth in four-team group A at the end of the Champions League group stage, are sixth on the Premier League points table with 27 points from nine wins in 16 games.

Barcelona to be without eight first-team players for Champions League match against Antwerp

Manchester United’s Champions League hopes are hanging in balance as they take on Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich in Europe’s elite club competition on Tuesday (Dec 12) evening. The contest at Old Trafford will have huge bearings on the fate of manager Erik ten Hag as United face a tough run of fixtures in the coming days. Heading into the contest, United will need a helping hand to progress to the Round of 16 while they need to beat German champions Bayern Munich. The night will also see Arsenal, Napoli and Real Madrid in action with qualification already secured.

Manchester United’s equation for the R16

Currently at bottom of the four-team group standings, United need a miracle of sorts to reach the R16 with them on four points from five matches. Bayern Munich are top of the table with 13 points in five matches and have already won Group A. Copenhagen and Galatasaray are second and third respectively with five points each. Interestingly, both Copenhagen and Galatasaray meet in the other meeting while United host Harry Kane-inspired Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in two weeks.

United’s only equation of reaching the R16 is simple, they must beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday. However, they will need a helping hand from both Copenhagen and Galatasaray with their head-to-head clash should result in a draw. However, any other set of results in the two matches will see United get eliminated. If both the matches end in a draw and United fail to win on final matchday it will be curtains in Europe altogether for Erik ten Hag’s side.

A win for United coupled with a win for either Copenhagen or Galatasaray will see the Premier League side get relegated to the Europa League. If this is the case, United will be the fourth English side to join the second-tier European competition with West Ham United, Liverpool and Brighton also part of the competition. Interestingly, Newcastle United could become the fifth team to join the Europa League if results go against them on Wednesday.

The evening will also feature Arsenal and PSV in action with the former already guaranteed the top spot in Group B while PSV need a point to guarantee a place in the R16. Napoli will also need a point against Braga to secure the second spot in C with Real Madrid already through as group winners. Inter Milan’s clash will Real Sociedad will see who wins Group D with both teams already through to the next round.

Champions League: Manchester United's fate hangs in balance as Harry Kane's Bayern Munich visit Old Trafford

Manchester United's future in this season's Champions League hangs by a thread ahead of Bayern Munich's visit to Old Trafford, with an early exit in Europe sure to put more scrutiny on manager Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman tried to argue after victory over Chelsea last week that United's season has not reached crisis-mode.

But Ten Hag's hopes that a turning point had been reached were short-lived as a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth on Saturday saw a troubled campaign reach a new low.

The Red Devils sit sixth in the Premier League after seven defeats in their opening 16 games.

Yet, while there may be time to recover a place in the top four domestically, their need in the Champions League is urgent.

Only victory against the German champions on Tuesday will give United any chance of progress to the last 16 and even then, they need FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray to draw in their final Group A match.

United are fortunate to even have a shot at the knockout stages after a return of just four points from their opening five matches.

No English side has ever conceded as many as the 14 goals that Ten Hag's men have in five Champions League group games.

A series of high-scoring shootouts in Europe contrasts sharply with United's troubles to score goals in the Premier League.

"We are really inconsistent. We have the abilities to do it, but you have to do it every game and every third day," said Ten Hag after Bournemouth celebrated their first ever win at Old Trafford in style.

"I think as a squad we are not good enough to be consistent and we have to work as a squad to improve that."

- Rashford's demise -

No United forward has scored at home in the Premier League all season as Marcus Rashford's demise has contributed to his side's struggles.

Rashford scored 30 times in a career-best campaign for goals last season but has just two so far this season -- one of which came from the penalty spot.

The England international has exhausted Ten Hag's patience and been dropped for the last two games.

But Rashford could return against Bayern as his understudies have also struggled to shine.

Alejandro Garnacho has produced flashes of brilliance, though remains wildly inconsistent as can be expected for a 19-year-old winger.

Meanwhile Antony, who Ten Hag pushed to sign in a £86 million ($108 million) deal last year, has not scored in his last 25 matches.

The Brazilian is just one of a long list of expensive flops that have seen United's fortunes decline in a decade since Alex Ferguson departed as manager.

Last weekend's loss to Bournemouth was the 35th home league defeat suffered by United since Ferguson's retirement.

During the iconic 26-year reign of the Scottish manager, United were only beaten in the league at Old Trafford 34 times.

Bayern may already be assured of their place in the last 16 as group winners but have a point to prove themselves after being thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

And the last time Bayern lost a Champions League group game was six years ago.

United captain Bruno Fernandes said his side must "do their job" and hope for help in Copenhagen.

"We know that the next game is going to be really tough - we have to win and wait for a good result in the other game for us," said Fernandes.

"We have to do our job, first of all, but we are more than capable of getting the result in that."

"I think as a squad we are not good enough to be consistent and we have to work as a squad to improve that." - Rashford's demise - No United forward has scored at home in the Premier League all season as Marcus Rashford's demise has contributed to his side's struggles.

Manager Erik Ten Hag under scrutiny as Manchester United fight for Champions League survival

Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas both scored twice as Barcelona began their defence of the Women's Champions League title on Tuesday with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Benfica, while a ruthless Lyon hit nine against Slavia Prague. Barcelona are aiming to win the Champions League for the third time in four seasons and their strength in depth was summed up by the presence of six players in their starting line-up who played in August's World Cup final in Sydney, when Spain beat England 1-0.

A crowd of fewer than 5,000 watched Putellas, who was a substitute in the World Cup final after missing almost all of last season due to a serious knee injury, head in the opener with quarter of an hour played. Putellas then followed up to make it 2-0 on the line when a header by Esmee Brugts beat the Portuguese side's goalkeeper, and Bonmati got the third with a composed finish just before the interval.

Putellas was replaced at the break and Bonmati then netted again seven minutes after the restart having been set up by Caroline Graham Hansen. Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala wrapped up a convincing victory by scoring with an overhead kick just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

"The motivation for this club is to arrive in the Champions League final every year," Barcelona's England midfielder Keira Walsh told DAZN. "If you look at the mentality of these girls, that's what I saw when I came in here. "It was always, constantly being at the top in training every single day. It's so competitive and that speaks for itself."

Also in Group A, Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-1 away to Rosengard of Sweden, with captain Tanja Pawollek opening the scoring before Barbara Dunst netted the second for the Germans, who have won the competition four times. Captain Olivia Schough pulled a goal back for Rosengard, the Swedish champions.

Hegerberg's 60th goal

Lyon, the record eight-time Champions League winners, are expected to make short work of Group B and they showed no mercy to their hosts in the Czech Republic. France star Kadidiatou Diani, a close-season signing from Paris Saint-Germain, netted twice for Lyon while 2018 Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg scored a penalty in the second half.

The Norwegian is the Champions League's all-time top scorer and that was her 60th goal in the competition. There was also a brace for Canadian defender Vanessa Gilles, with Sara Daebritz, Danielle van de Donk, Eugenie Le Sommer and substitute Amel Majri getting their other goals.

Seen as one of the main threats to Barcelona's hopes of retaining the trophy, Lyon's next game will be at home to the Austrian side St Poelten. "If everything goes the way we want it to go, we can go far in every competition," said the Lyon coach, Sonia Bompastor.

St Poelten were beaten 2-1 at home by Brann of Norway on Tuesday, with US-born Icelandic international defender Natasha Anasi scoring the winner for the visitors. The other groups get underway on Wednesday, when English champions Chelsea travel to play Real Madrid in Group D. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes was on Tuesday confirmed as the next coach of the United States, a position she will take up after this season.

Football: Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas score brace as Barcelona beat Benfica in Champions League

Manchester United’s Champions League season is on the brink of collapse after their 3-3 draw against Turkish giants Galatasaray in Istanbul on Wednesday (Nov 29) evening. Despite having a two-goal lead in the match twice, United were made to pay big time after errors from goalkeeper Andre Onana. The result also means, United are bottom of the four-team group with one match to go and will exit the competition if they fail to win on Matchday 6 against Bayern Munich.

Onana mistake costs United

In the 61st minute of the contest, United were defending a free kick from former Chelsea man Hakim Ziyech. With everyone behind to defend, Ziyech’s ball was no surprise for the defence as they left it with Onana to deal on an awkward bounce. However, the Cameroonian shotstopper fumbled the ball and directed the ball into his own net. This trimmed United’s lead from 3-1 to 3-2 as they faced a nervous final 30 minutes.

Earlier in the 28th minute, Onana was at fault when he failed to judge the flight of Ziyech’s freekick as the Turkish side came back from 2-0 down. Both errors proved costly in the overall outcome of the match as the match ended in a 3-3 draw with Kerem Akturkoglu coming off the bench to score with a sublime screamer.

United on the brink of exit

The result leaves United bottom of the group with four points from five matches and will depend on other results to have a chance to make the last 16 of the Champions League. As things stand in Group A, it is a three-way scramble for the second spot while Bayern Munich are already through as group winners. Copenhagen and Galatasaray are in the second and third spot respectively with five points each.

Interestingly, both Copenhagen and Galatasaray meet on Matchday 6 with the winner going through while United will need the match to end in a draw considering they win against Bayern at Old Trafford.

United drew 3-3 against Galatasaray on Wednesday (Nov 29) which has now seen on the cusp of exit as they are no longer in control of their fate.
Ten Hag takes blame

"It is always me. I am responsible for this. "We should have taken three points. This is the same in more games - home against Galatasaray and away in Copenhagen. We played so good. So I have to make a compliment to my team but I also have to criticise the team and us as a coaching staff and me as a manager,” Ten Hag said while speaking to the broadcasters.

"We are not defending well enough, we are leading 3-1 and you can't afford such mistakes because it makes a difference."

"We are in a project and we are moving forward, making improvement. We are going in the right direction. I know which steps we need to take,” added Ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag accepts responsibility for Manchester United's DREADFUL Champions League run

Arsenal blasted their way into the last 16 of the Champions League on a freezing night at The Emirates on Wednesday (Nov 29), crushing RC Lens 6-0 with goals from six different players and ensuring they qualify top of Group B.

The home side, back in European football's biggest club competition for the first time in seven years, needed one point to secure themselves a place in the knockout stages of the competition. Instead, they swept Lens off the park to secure all three.

"Today we were really attacking and we played to dominate the game - and we achieved that. Today we were really effective," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told reporters.

Arsenal have 12 points with four wins from their five games, while Lens, who sit third with five points, can no longer reach the last 16.

Arsenal took the lead in the 13th minute with a scrappy goal from Kai Havertz, their late-goal hero at Brentford on Saturday. As Lens failed to clear their lines the ball fell to Gabriel Jesus on the edge of the box and the Brazilian laid it off to Havertz who prodded it in off Lens keeper Brice Samba from close range.

Jesus doubled the lead eight minutes later, collecting a sideways pass on the edge of the box from Bukayo Saka with his left foot, deftly switching back to his right to send the defenders the wrong way, and burying his shot in the corner.

Saka drove the knife in with a third in the 23rd minute, bundling in a weakly parried ball with his body after a shot by Gabriel Martinelli, who twisted that knife four minutes later with a curled shot that left Lens goalkeeper Samba lunging at thin air.

Some of Lens' disgusted travelling supporters began letting off flares, briefly holding up play.

Gunners captain Martin Odegaard made it five with the last kick of the first half, volleying in a long cross from Takehiro Tomiyasu charging down the right wing.

Lens, last season's Ligue 1 runners-up, stunned Arsenal 2-1 in the reverse fixture, as striker Elye Wahi scored one goal and set up another. But the Frenchman cut a forlorn figure as the mercury dipped in north London.

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice sat deep in the second half as the home side defended their huge lead, smothering the visitors' every attempt to find their way into the area.

After a quiet second half, Arsenal were awarded a penalty after a VAR review when Lens' Abdukodir Khusanov stuck out an arm in his own area in the 85th minute and late Arsenal substitute Jorginho slotted the ball home from the spot to complete a miserable night for the visitors.
