Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, are facing serious allegations of cheating a prominent bullion trader in Mumbai. The accusations, brought forward by Prithviraj Saremal Kothari, have led the Mumbai Sessions Court to order a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Kothari, a leading figure in the gold and bullion market, claims that Shetty and Kundra, along with their associates, orchestrated a deceptive scheme under their company, Satyug Gold. The scheme promised investors lucrative returns on gold investments by assuring gold delivery at a fixed rate, regardless of market fluctuations.

According to Kothari's complaint, he was persuaded by the accused to invest a substantial amount in the scheme, lured by assurances of its legitimacy and the timely delivery of gold upon maturity. Kothari alleges that these assurances, provided personally by Shetty, Kundra, and their associates, convinced him to make an upfront payment of Rs 9,038,600.

However, upon the maturity date of April 2, 2019, Kothari claims he did not receive the promised gold. Supporting documents presented by Kothari included a cover letter signed by Shilpa Shetty Kundra and an invoice issued by Satyug Gold Private Limited.

The court has directed the Mumbai Police to investigate these allegations thoroughly.

This legal trouble adds to Kundra's ongoing issues, as earlier this year, he came under scrutiny by the Enforcement Directorate in a separate money laundering case linked to a Ponzi scheme. The probe led to the seizure of properties worth crores, including a Mumbai flat registered in the name of Shilpa Shetty.

Trouble in paradise? George Clooney and Amal are reportedly facing challenges in their marriage due to their demanding careers. If reports are anything to go by, the couple, who pledged in 2014 to never be apart for more than a week, are now struggling to maintain that promise as work commitments increasingly pull them in different directions.

According to Intouch, George Clooney, 63, is planning to relocate to New York City for at least a year to star on Broadway, leaving behind their family home at Lake Como, Italy, where Amal will remain with their 7-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella. This distance, a staggering 4,000 miles, is reportedly putting a strain on their relationship.

“They are both hardcore workaholics, so it’s like they’re in their own little bubble,” a source told the publication. “They are in two very different worlds 90 per cent of the day. They’re leading separate lives.”

Back in 2021, George opened up about his intention to prioritise family and consider retirement from acting by the age of 60. "My wife and I had this conversation when I turned 60. I said, ‘We both love what we do. But we gotta make sure we don’t book ourselves silly'." Despite this, George has remained deeply entrenched in his work.

In a shocking turn of events, popular Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and his partner Pavithra Gowda have been arrested and sent to six-day police custody in connection with a murder case, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said on Tuesday (June 11).

Darshan and his aides are being investigated by police regarding the murder of Renuka Swamy, which reportedly occurred on June 9 in the Kamakshipalya area of the city.

"In connection with a murder, a Kannada film actor has been taken into custody and is being questioned," Commissioner Dayananda informed the media, according to PTI news agency.

The 47-year-old actor was picked up in relation to the case involving Swamy, who worked with a pharmacy company and was originally from Chitradurga district.

The incident came to light when Swamy's body was found in a stormwater drain in Kamakshipalya. "Based on the recovery of the dead body of an unidentified man and the injuries on his body, a murder case was registered. On the basis of CCTV footage and other technical evidence, the deceased was identified as Renuka Swamy," Dayananda explained.

The Commissioner stated that Darshan and his aides have been detained for questioning but refrained from disclosing further details due to the ongoing investigation. When asked about Darshan's arrest, he clarified, "He has been taken into custody and is being questioned. Other procedures will follow after the due process."

Initial investigations suggest that the murder may be linked to derogatory comments made by Swamy against a film actress on social media. The police were alerted about the murder by local residents who discovered the body. A subsequent autopsy confirmed that Swamy had been murdered.

Further investigation and interrogation of suspects led to Darshan's detention from a hotel in Mysuru. Police sources indicated that they are probing whether the actor was directly involved in the murder or if he played a role in the conspiracy. Additionally, the actress against whom the derogatory comments were made has also been detained for questioning.

Renuka Swamy's family expressed their devastation upon hearing the news. "He was my only son. Last year he got married. I spoke to him on Saturday only. I want justice," his father Srinivasaiah said, speaking to reporters at Kamakshipalya police station.

In light of Darshan's detention, security has been tightened around his residence in RR Nagar to manage his large fan following.

Darshan, who made his debut as a lead actor in the 2002 film Majestic, has starred in numerous commercially successful films such as Kariya, Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna, Kalasipalya, Gaja, Navagraha, Saarathi, Bulbul, Yajamana, Robert, and Kaatera. Prateik’s aunt helped select two silk Kanjeevaram sarees, preserved over the years. Collaborating with Monica Shah of Jade by MK, Vijay crafted a cropped double-breasted tuxedo in plain black silk and transformed the pinstriped saree into wide-legged pants. The red border of the second saree was used as trim on the sleeves, adding a touch of elegance.

Public institutes will be useless to the nation if they are turned into "elitist" spaces, says filmmaker Payal Kapadia, while also advocating for a tax on big budget movies to create a fund to foster independent filmmaking.

Kapadia, who charted history by becoming the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix award for All We Imagine as Light, on Friday posted a lengthy statement on Facebook where she shared her thoughts on a range of topics and issues.

An alumnus of Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India , the filmmaker said public institutes should always be accessible to everyone.

"Unfortunately, public institutes are becoming more and more expensive nowadays. These spaces can only remain relevant and can encourage discourse if it remains accessible to all. If it becomes an elitist space like various public universities have become over many years, it will be useless to the nation," Kapadia wrote.

"There are many private institutions that are made only to maintain the status quo and give opportunities to the elite. A space like FTII is somewhere in between at this point in time. We should strive for it to be even more accessible," she added.

The director also stressed that there is "significant need" for raising the quality of education at primary education level.

Kapadia, whose mother is prominent painter Nalini Malani, said though she comes from a privileged background, there were many challenges faced by women in her family. They were aided in choosing their professions by having access to prestigious institutions like the JJ School of Art and Jawaharlal Nehru University .

"For me, the greatest learning was being at the Film and television Institute of India where I was a student for five years. FTII was a space where we could not only formulate our thoughts about filmmaking but also about the world we inhabit. Filmmaking does not exist in a vacuum. It is through debates and discussions, questions and self reflection that we move closer to the films we choose to make," she said, adding that the institute encourages independent thinking and diversity.

In 2015, Kapadia was one of the protesting students who went on strike to oppose actor Gajendra Chauhan's appointment as the chairperson of the FTII.

She said the students at the premier film institute didn't always agree with each other but they learned a lot from their differences.

"Affordable public education has been instrumental in making this possible. And it is not just FTIl. If we look at films being made in our country, you will always find someone in the crew who went to a public institute - Jamia, JNU, HCU, SRFTI, KR Narayanan, just to name a few," she added.

At Cannes, All We Imagine As Light was the first Indian film in 30 years and first ever by an Indian female director to be showcased in main competition, last being Shaji N Karun's Swaham .

The filmmaker recalled that many asked her why it took three decades for an Indian film to make it to the official line-up, a question she also posed to the selection committee.

"We should ask ourselves this as well. Why can we not support more independent filmmakers?" she asked, while crediting the French Public funding system that helped her make the movie.

Kapadia's film is an Indo-French co-production between Petit Chaos from France and Chalk and Cheese Films from India. The other co-producers are Arte France Cinéma, Baldr Film, Another Birth, Les Films Fauves and Pulpa Film.

"In France, a small tax is levied on each and every ticket sale of a film as well as a tax levied on TV channels. From this the CNC fund is created that allows independent producers and directors to apply for funding."

She revealed that distributors and exhibitors can get funding to distribute films once they are complete.

Though she believes that charging audiences a tax would be "unfair", Kapadia batted for a tax on the profits made on "blockbuster films", saying that it will help in creating an independent film fund.

"If such a system was made in our country with an autonomous body to run the fund, it would only encourage more and more independent filmmaking. For a democracy to thrive, voices need to remain independent from big studios that are run by rich industrialists."

Kapadia praised the Kerala government for starting a similar kind of fund that "supports female filmmakers as well as filmmakers from under-represented castes".

"I think this is the need of the hour. I know that a lot of well-meaning individuals in the film industry have started their own production houses. But they only support filmmakers they know.

"There should be some autonomous system with representation that could give opportunities to filmmakers even if they know no one in the film industry," she added. Governments should only be involved as facilitators in the funding process, Kapadia said.

She also thanked people from the Kerala film industry, whose "many well established actors and producers" lent their support to All We Imagine As Light.

"In Kerala, even distributors and exhibitors are open to show more art house films. Audiences are open to watch different kinds of movies. We live in a country where we are lucky to have so many cinemas. We should accept that many different kinds of films can exist together."

As the election results are around the corner, Kapadia hopes that the new government will work towards a "more equal society where every individual has the right to our country's resources and that they are not limited to the hands of a few".

"The resources are also non material, like cultural capital, like education and access to the arts. As citizens of the country it is our responsibility to hold every government accountable for this," she said.
