Jharkhand student leader Devendranath Mahto, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike against alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations, has agreed to drink water following an emotional appeal by activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Mahto, who had refused both food and water since July 3, said he would continue his hunger strike until the Jharkhand government accepts the students' demands. During a video call, Sonam Wangchuk expressed concern over Mahto's deteriorating health and urged him to at least stay hydrated while continuing the movement.

The protest, led by JPSC and JSSC aspirants, demands the cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination, sweeping reforms in recruitment exams, and a CBI or independent judicial probe into the alleged irregularities. Protesters are also planning a Tiranga March to gather public support.

The Supreme Court of India on Monday (Mar 11) dismissed the West Bengal government's plea challenging a Calcutta High Court order in a matter relating to the attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team in the Sandeshkhali region in the east Indian state of West Bengal.&nbsp;

The plea for an order to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for an investigation into the January 5 attack on ED officials in Sandeshkhali village which is in the North 24 Parganas district.&nbsp;

The Calcutta HC had also asked for the custody of the accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh to be granted to the central agency. He was arrested by the West Bengal police on February 29 in connection with the attack.&nbsp;

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, however, ordered expunging certain remarks and observations made against the state government and the police in the March 5 order of the high court.&nbsp;

The West Bengal government on March 6 had approached the top court seeking urgent listing of its petition challenging the high court order, but failed to elicit prompt relief.&nbsp;

The findings have reportedly been obtained in a internal inquiry which was conducted by Ministry of Minority Affairs. This is being reported as 'biggest minority scholarship scam' in the country. The inquiry by the ministry has brought to the fore corruption in 830 such institutions. It is being touted to be a scam amounting to more than 17 million US dollars (Rs 144.83 crore), reported India Today.

The authorities have now frozen accounts of 830 institutions which are under the scanner.

India Today reported that the ministry has raised questions with banks as to why accounts of such institutions were opened in the first place.

The report said that many of the institutions under scanner were registered on National Scholarship Portal as well as the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) but they were non-existent or non-operational.

The CBI will now investigate nodal officers of these institutions who submitted approval reports as well district nodal officers who verified cases which were found to be fake. The agency will also probe into how a scam of such size was allowed to persist for years in multiple Indian states.

The ministry's probe has reportedly found that in 62 institutions in Chhattisgarh were found to be fake. In Rajasthan, the number was 99. In Assam, 68 per cent of the probed institutions were found to be suspicious. The percentages in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal were 64, 44 and 39 respectively.

Indian ministry flags minority scholarship scam, CBI to probe 830 institutions: Report

Indian Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday, while speaking about the triple train tragedy which took place in Odisha's Balasore, said that the Railway Board has recommended a CBI probe into the accident.

“Taking into consideration the situation in which this accident took place, the Railway Board had recommended a CBI investigation into the matter,” the minister said.

He added, “Rescue was completed and restoration work is underway. Work-related to track is done and overhead wiring work is going on. Patients are being treated at hospitals.”

“The railways along with the state governments is trying to contact the families of the people who were involved in that unfortunate incident from different parts of the country,” the minister stated.

<h2>Electronic interlocking cause of the accident: Minister</h2>

Earlier in the day, minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the tragic train accident occurred because of a "change in electronic interlocking".

Electronic interlocking is a set up of signal apparatus that avoids conflicting movements between running trains by an arrangement of tracks. Basically, it is a safety measure that stops signals from getting changed in improper sequence.

"This is a different issue. It is about a point machine, electronic interlocking. The change that occurred during electronic interlocking, the accident happened due to that. Whoever did it and how it happened will be found out after proper investigation,” the minister stated.

He added that the officials are carrying out restoration work and normalcy is expected to be restored before Wednesday morning.

"The commissioner of railway safety has investigated the matter and it won't be right for me to comment on that. Let the investigation report come. But the cause of the accident has been identified and the people responsible for it have been identified. Right now our focus is on restoration. There are two main lines and two loop lines. The work is underway and we will definitely complete restoration well before our target of Wednesday morning," Vaishnaw stated.

The railway minister further refuted the allegations made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that Kavach (anti-collision system) device would have averted the accident.

"It has nothing to do with Kavach. The reason is not what Mamata Banerjee said yesterday. She said as per understanding," the minister added.

The train accident, which involved Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, which were carrying around 2,500 passengers, and a goods train, took place on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore. At least 275 people have lost their lives in the accident and over 1,175 were injured.&nbsp;

Advocate Sudhir Ojha, on whose complaint a sedition case was initiated against 49 eminent personalities, on Thursday moved a protest letter in a local court here saying that he does not believe in the investigation conducted by the Bihar Police.&nbsp;

Ojha filed the letter in the Chief Judicial Magistrate`s court, seeking judicial inquiry and investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The matter is likely to be taken up on November 11.

"I had filed a complaint against 49 noted personalities. After the court`s order, an FIR was registered. I have apprehensions that the police will present this as a false case in the court. I have filed a protest petition in the CJM`s court. I have raised questions that the police are not investigating properly. They have not interrogated my witness and included my evidence," he told.

"As soon as the police filed a proforma in the court, there should be a judicial investigation on my protest petition. I don`t trust the Bihar Police. I have demanded a CBI investigation in the matter. The next hearing in the matter is on November 11," added the advocate.

On July 23, as many as 49 renowned personalities from different fields, including singer Shubha Mudgal, actor Konkona Sen Sharma, and filmmaker and Anurag Kashyap, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising concerns over the growing incidents of mob-lynching.

They had sought an exemplary punishment to be meted out to the accused in such cases.

In pursuant of this, Ojha had filed a complaint against the signatories before a court, on whose order an FIR was registered by the city police under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including for hurting religious feelings and sedition.

The FIR against the signatories had evoked a sharp reaction from the people across the country.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking a CBI probe into the murder of a security guard at former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's retreat home at Kodanad Estate in Nilgiris district in 2017.

An impartial and independent investigation will not be possible under the state police as the chief minister was also the home minister of the state, the plea contended.

Samuel Mathew, former Tehelka managing editor had on January 11 released a 16-minute video in which the two accused in the case had allegedly linked Palaniswami to the case, the petition said.

Two days after the presser, Palaniswamy also held his press conference in which he had denied the allegations and said that police action will be taken against those who linked him in the murder case, it said.

On April 23, 2017, the security guard of the Kodanad estate, the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa's retreat home in Nilgiris district, was murdered in a robbery attempt by a 10-member gang.

It emerged during the probe that Jayalalithaa's former driver C Kanagaraj and Sayan had allegedly plotted the crime.

A total of 10 people were arrested in the case and a charge sheet was also filed.&nbsp;

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC), which conducts examination for subordinate services, today decided to recommend a CBI inquiry into the alleged paper leaks in one of its tests held on February 21.

In a statement, SSC chairman Ashim Khurana said that a delegation of candidates, who were protesting against the alleged paper leaks, met him along with BJP Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari and handed over a memorandum.

They demanded a CBI enquiry into the allegations of the leak of questions of the Combined Graduate Level (Tier-II) Examination 2017 held from February 17 to 22.
