While several people voluntarily spoke with the committee, others have declined the committee's request or not responded at all.

“I've got good reason to believe a number of them are horrified and scandalized by what took place on January 6 and they want to do their legal duty and their civic duty by coming forward to explain exactly what happened," Jamie Raskin, a Democratic member of the committee, told CNN.

According to five former Trump aides, counsel for the committee has emailed or texted them directly to ask whether they are interested in coming in to talk to the congressional investigators, often looking for context on what happened inside the West Wing before the insurrection on January 6.

The latest development comes as former President Donald Trump has sued the National Archives, the custodian of his administration's White House records, to prevent from giving documents to Congress that he believes are privileged.

The Department of Defense put 100 National Guard troops on standby. The Capitol Police erected fencing around Capitol Hill. Even youth soccer games were canceled before the “Justice for J6” rally, the first significant gathering of right-wing demonstrators at the Capitol since a mob attacked the building in January as Congress was officially certifying President Joe Biden’s victory.

The rally is being organized by Matt Braynard, a former Trump campaign operative, and his organization, Look Ahead America. The organization has demanded that the Department of Justice drop charges against what the group calls “nonviolent protesters” facing charges stemming from the Jan. 6 riot. Organizers have secured a permit for 700 attendees, according to the document.

Braynard has told protesters to be peaceful, “respectful and kind” to the hundreds of police officers expected to meet them, and to refrain from bringing signs, flags or clothing promoting a candidate or objecting to the 2020 election.

“What we’re looking for is pure patriotism,” he said in a promotional video.

But the Department of Homeland Security has warned of potential violence.

“We are aware of a small number of recent online threats of violence referencing the planned rally, including online discussions encouraging violence the day before the rally,” the department’s intelligence officers wrote in a report obtained by The New York Times.

Officers are preparing for violence to erupt with “little-to-no warning,” although authorities have not identified any “specific or credible plot associated with the event,” according to the document.

It is not at all clear whether the event will attract a large crowd. But in a measure of the lasting effect of the Jan. 6 riot, Washington is bracing for trouble.

Dozens of officers in riot gear could be seen near the Capitol on Saturday morning, as well as officers on horseback. Law enforcement agencies in the region, including the Virginia State Police and the police department for Prince George’s County in Maryland, arrived with armored cars and other resources.

Soccer games and other outdoor activities for children in nearby parks were canceled. While the initial reports suggested that smoke was seen rising from the Capitol building, DC Fire and EMS tweeted that fire had broken out in a building on 7th &amp; D Sts SW.

As per the emergency services, the fire broke out&nbsp;on the roof of a hi-rise building which is under construction. The fire is reportedly contained to the "roof and roofing materials on a building under construction". For now, 20 units and 100 personnel have been deployed to contain the fire.

No injuries have been reported yet.

The fire comes a few days after the 10th anniversary of 9/11 attack and a few hours before the pro-right rally in the same area.

The internal inquiry, which was conducted by the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility, covered 38 investigations, although investigators failed to identify 12 officers involved in the cases. One investigation, into an unidentified official who was “accused of unsatisfactory performance and conduct unbecoming,” remains open, according to the statement.

The security failures stemming from the Jan. 6 breach has cast scrutiny on the secretive agency, which is responsible for protecting the Capitol complex. Officer Brian Sicknick died in the hospital after fending off the mob, and at least 73 officers were hurt that day after being assaulted with flagpoles, fire extinguishers and hockey sticks, injuries that ranged from bruises to concussions and burns.

Even as the majority of the police force grapple with the trauma of the attack, videos widely circulating on social media appeared to show some officers treating the rioters sympathetically or doing little to stop them from entering the complex.

Capitol police inquiry into Jan 6 riot recommends disciplining six officers

A conspiracy theorist who became one of the most recognized rioters storming the US&nbsp;Capitol&nbsp;last January pleaded guilty Friday to obstructing congressional proceedings, a charge carrying a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Images of Jacob Anthony Chansley, who as a shirtless man carrying a spear and wearing a horned fur hat became known as the QAnon shaman, were beamed around the world when he and others invaded the&nbsp;Capitol&nbsp;building and took over the US Senate.

Chansley has been a subscriber to QAnon, the far-right conspiracy theory blamed for fueling Donald Trump's supporters who tried to halt Congress's certification of results of the 2020 election won by Joe Biden.

Speaking by videolink to federal Judge Royce Lambert in US District Court in Washington, Chansley said "yes your honor" to pleading guilty to the most serious charge in a six-count indictment.

Chansley, who in court acknowledged his "mental vulnerabilities," has undergone a psychiatric evaluation, with the judge saying he determined that Chansley was competent to stand trial.

Sentencing was scheduled for November 17. According to guidelines estimated by the prosecution, Chansley could face a sentence of between 41 and 51 months in prison.

His lawyer, Albert Watkins, sought leniency from the court.

"Mr Chansley has zero criminal history, we do know that he was not a planner (of the unrest), he was not violent," Watkins said.

The lawyer also asked the court that his client be released from detention pending sentencing, a request that Lambert said would be considered.

Chansley, also known as Jacob Angeli, is among several hundred rioters arrested following the insurrection.

He and others have pleaded guilty after video footage showed them fighting officers, storming the&nbsp;Capitol, or making threats about lawmakers and then-vice president Mike Pence, who was overseeing the Electoral College certification process.

Prosecutors have said Chansley left a note for Pence at the Senate dais where the second-in-command had been standing just minutes before, which read: "it's only a matter of time, justice is coming."

According to the count to which the defendant pleaded guilty, Chansley engaged in "disorderly and disruptive conduct" when he obstructed the congressional proceedings, and threatened congressional officials.

While Chansley publicly embraced QAnon,&nbsp;he was photographed holding a "Q Sent Me!" sign at previous rallies -- his attorney said Chansley has repudiated those beliefs.

The&nbsp;suspect, an apparent right-wing extremist identified by US&nbsp;Capitol&nbsp;Police as Floyd Ray Roseberry, had been broadcasting live on social media from his truck, assailing President Joe Biden and Democrats, warning of a "revolution," and complaining about the US government and its policy in Afghanistan.

He had also claimed that four more sets of explosives were lying in wait in Washington and that they would be detonated, along with his&nbsp;bomb, if police used deadly force against him.

Much of the complex was cordoned off as police and FBI agents negotiated with the driver, who police said had appeared to have a detonator in his hand.

"He got out of the vehicle and surrendered, and the tactical units that were close by took him into custody without incident," US&nbsp;Capitol&nbsp;Police Chief Thomas Manger told reporters.

Law enforcement were still investigating whether the vehicle, which was parked on the sidewalk next to the Library of Congress, contained actual explosives.

Manger&nbsp;said it was unclear what Roseberry's motives were, but in his Facebook Live steam he issued a series of incoherent threats and asked to speak to Biden.

"I'm trying to get Joe Biden on the phone. I'm parked up here on the sidewalk right beside all this pretty stuff," said the bald-headed man with a salt-and-pepper goatee, wearing a white T-shirt.

"I'm not hurting nobody Joe. I'm not pulling the trigger on this thing. I can't," he said. "I'm telling you, them snipers come in, they start shooting this window out, this&nbsp;bomb's going off."&nbsp;

'The revolution'

The live feed showed Roseberry in his vehicle holding a metal can with clay and a box with buttons and wires on the top, but it was unclear if the contraption was a viable explosive device.

While he did not claim a political affiliation, he referred at one point to "the revolution" and said: "I'm looking for all my other patriots to come out and help me."

Later he lashed out at Biden's party, saying: "You all know what you're doing, Democrats? You're killing America."

Facebook's policy communications director Andy Stone said the profile in question had been removed and the incident was being investigated.

While it remained unclear whether the&nbsp;bomb&nbsp;threat&nbsp;was genuine, the Library of Congress's main buildings were evacuated, as was the nearby US Supreme Court and at least one of the three House office buildings.&nbsp;

The Republican National Committee headquarters was also reportedly evacuated and the Washington Metro's&nbsp;Capitol&nbsp;South subway station closed as a precaution.

A White House official said Biden was briefed on the&nbsp;standoff.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives are currently on recess, but some lawmakers have remained in Washington and staffers are working in the complex.

House Democrat Bill Pascrell offered fierce condemnation of the&nbsp;suspect&nbsp;during the&nbsp;standoff, in comments that echoed the trauma of the insurrection which rocked the&nbsp;Capitol&nbsp;in January.

The Justice Department continued building cases Wednesday against people accused of storming the Capitol, arresting a leader of the far-right group the Proud Boys and charging two men with conspiracy in an effort to block certification of President Joe Biden’s victory in the election.

Ethan Nordean, self-described “sergeant of arms” of the Seattle chapter of the Proud Boys, was arrested Wednesday morning, federal prosecutors said. He had been under investigation for more than a week after prosecutors named him in court papers as a chief organizer of a mob of about 100 other members of the group that marched through Washington on Jan. 6, ending at the Capitol building.

Separately, Nicholas DeCarlo, a 30-year-old Texas man, and Nicholas Ochs, a founder of Hawaii’s chapter of the Proud Boys, were charged with conspiring with one another and unnamed co-conspirators to stop the certification of Biden’s Electoral College win as part of last month’s riot at the Capitol, according to the indictment.

The case against DeCarlo and Ochs was announced by John Demers, head of the Justice Department’s national security division, the U.S. attorney in Washington and the FBI’s Washington field office.

Their indictments highlighted the government’s effort to bring more serious charges against some of the scores of people who were initially charged with lesser crimes after the attack. The two men had earlier been charged with unlawful entry and obstructing an official proceeding.

DeCarlo and Ochs were charged in an indictment with conspiring with others to create a plan to stop Congress, raising money online to fund travel to Washington to carry out their plan, crossing state lines to obstruct Congress and forcibly storming the Capitol building.

Combined with the separate charges against Nordean, the indictment against Ochs and DeCarlo underscored the increasingly prominent role that the Proud Boys are accused of playing in the assault.

Leaders of the Proud Boys have sought to distance themselves from the riots, even as federal investigators scrutinize them as they seek to determine the full scope of the group’s involvement.

In the indictment against DeCarlo and Ochs, prosecutors said the men carved the words “MURDER THE MEDIA” into the Capitol’s Memorial Door.

The case is part of a strike force created by Michael Sherwin, the U.S. attorney in Washington, to examine violent actions that targeted members of the news media, the Justice Department said. Sherwin said at a recent news conference that it was “the height of hypocrisy” to attack journalists while invoking the First Amendment to justify illegally entering the Capitol.

DeCarlo was also seen in photos taken inside the Capitol during the riots wearing a shirt and hat that said “MT Media,” which investigators said stands for “Murder the Media.”

Prosecutors say that Nordean, carrying a bullhorn, led a 100-person mob and entered the Capitol with another top-ranking Proud Boys leader, Joseph Biggs, who is also facing charges in connection with the attack.

In a criminal complaint against Nordean, prosecutors said he and other Proud Boys “were planning in advance to organize a group that would attempt to overwhelm police barricades and enter” the Capitol.

The 21-page complaint also said that, before marching on the building, Nordean had a brief exchange with another man charged in the assault, Robert Gieswein, of Woodland Park, Colorado, who has been accused of being a member of the far-right militia the Three Percenters.

Nordean, 30, of Auburn, Washington, was near the front of a crowd of rioters that confronted an outnumbered detachment of Capitol Police officers Jan. 6, prosecutors said. Moving past the officers, prosecutors said, he and other members of the Proud Boys forced their way into the building.

Before the attack on the Capitol, Nordean gave hints of an “intent to organize a group that intended to engage in conflict,” according to a news release issued Wednesday by the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington.

In late December, for example, he posted a message asking for donations of “protective gear” and “communications equipment,” prosecutors said. About a week later, prosecutors added, Nordean posted a video online, discussing what he described as “blatant rampant voter fraud” and saying that the Proud Boys were going to “bring back that original spirit of 1776 of what really established the character of what America is.”

After the assault, prosecutors say, Nordean continued writing inflammatory messages.

On Jan. 8, they said, he posted a photo on social media showing a police officer spraying pepper spray. The caption read, “If you feel bad for the police, you are part of the problem.”

Williams' mother has also confirmed her daughter's confirmation through the pictures and videos shown to her by the FBI. She also revealed that her daughter had "taken a sudden interest in President trump's politics" and she had travelled to Washington with her father, but later got separated.

Federal and local authorities across the country pressed their hunt over the weekend for the members of the angry mob that stormed the Capitol building last Wednesday, as Washington’s mayor issued an urgent appeal to start preparing immediately for more potential violence before, during and after the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

Bowser sent a firmly worded letter Saturday to the Department of Homeland Security, asking officials to move up to Monday the implementation of heightened security measures that are otherwise set to begin Jan. 19, just one day before Biden’s swearing-in.

Police reassess security for inauguration and demonstrations after Capitol attack

When the supporters of the to-be-impeached US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> marched into the Capitol Building with the aim to destroy government property and the concept&nbsp;of democracy, many of them had also entered with the mindset of executing Vice President Mike Pence.

The outgoing VP was present in the Capitol building on Wednesday when the rioters took control of the building. When the rioters started pouring in — with alleged help of the Capitol security — the VP was rushed to safety as chants of 'Hang Mike Pence' echoed in the halls of one of the safest buildings in the US.

As soon as the Capitol was secured, Mike Pence completed his task of officially certifying the victory of Joe Biden. Since the announcement, the Pro-Trump rioters — who were already turning against the VP — started demanding execution of Pence.

"While I have consistently condemned political violence on both sides of the aisle, specifically violence directed at law enforcement, we now see some supporters of the President using violence as a means to achieve political ends. This is unacceptable," he said.

"These violent actions are unconscionable, and I implore the President and all elected officials to strongly condemn the violence that took place yesterday," Chad said.
