Nearly a week after the Director General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan agreed to implement the ceasefire pact of 2003 in "letter and spirit", Pakistani rangers resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing along the IB here this morning killing two BSF personnel.

The firing from across the International Border (IB) in the Pragwal area of Akhnoor sector started in the wee hours, resulting in critical injuries to two BSF personnel manning a forward post, a senior officer of the border guarding force told PTI.

He said both the personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, later succumbed to injuries at a hospital while undergoing treatment.

The firing from across the border in violation of the ceasefire agreement prompted a strong and effective retaliation by the BSF, the officer said.

Cross-border firing was going on when last reports came in, he added.

On May 29, the DGMOs of India and Pakistan agreed to "fully implement" the ceasefire pact of 2003 in "letter and spirit" forthwith to stop border skirmishes in J&K.

The two military commanders reviewed the prevailing situation along the LoC and the IB in J&K during a conversation over the special hotline.

The hotline contact was initiated by the Pakistani DGMO.

Following the conversation between Indian DGMO Lt Gen Anil Chauhan and Pakistan's Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, the two armies issued identical statements saying both sides agreed to implement the 15-year-old ceasefire understanding.

The latest deaths in the Pakistani firing raised the casualty figure during ceasefire violations along the IB and the Line of Control (LoC) in the state to 46. The dead includes 20 security personnel.

Last month, thousands of people residing along the IB in Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts had to flee their homes following intense shelling from Pakistan between May 15 and May 23 which left 12 people dead, including two BSF jawans and an infant, and scores of others injured.

After the DGMOs of the two countries spoke to each other, hope rekindled among border residents who had started returning to their homes but the latest incident would trigger fresh concerns among them.&nbsp;

Two BSF personnel killed as Pakistan violates ceasefire in J&K

The brave men of India's Border Security Force achieved another feat last week when their two teams scaled Mount Everest. One of the teams was led by Assistant Commandant Loveraj Singh Dharamshaktu which scaled the Everest first with seven members and the other by young Himachali Deputy Commandant Avinash Negi which followed the first team and climbed the world's tallest peak (8848 metres) from Southwest face.

Loveraj conquered the highest peak for a record seventh time and he says, it's the love for the mountains that takes him to the Everest. Deputy Commandant Avinash Negi said "the best view comes after hardest climb".

The BSF expedition was flagged-off by Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on March 20 the teams successfully scaled the peak on May 20 and 21.

The team took an initiative to clean the mountains under PM Modi's Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission. Before Everest, the team climbed the Lobuche peak (6200 metres) in Nepal to collect non-bio degradable waste from higher camps and collected more than 700 kg of trash. The leftover trash by trekkers and mountaineers on glaciers is one of the major reasons for rapid melting of glaciers. Prime Minister Modi applauded BSF team climbers in "Mann Ki Baat" for their effort to clean the mountains. Apart from this, the team set up the world's highest medical camp for the poor and needy Sherpas, an ethnic group in the mountainous regions of Nepal and expert climbers.

The members of the two teams came from Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir, and were accompanied by 10 support members and one doctor. Already having reached the base camp in Nepal, the BSF team is expected to reach India by first week of June.

"If you get tears in your eyes, it will freeze on your cheeks before it rolls down and as you reach close to the peak you feel very tiny in front of the nature, one mistake and that will take you to another world.

'Your tears will freeze': BSF team recalls scaling the Everest for record seventh time

Troops of the BSF, country's largest border guarding force, will now undertake a "mandatory" test that will analyse the state of their happiness and wellbeing before deployment along the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, and in anti-Naxal operations.

The forces' headquarters here has prepared a multi-point wellness quotient assessment test (WQAT) tool that helps "identify stress precipitators and physical and mental health issues that need interventions."

"The WQAT is a special tool designed to understand the happiness quotient and mental wellbeing of an individual and this has now been made a compulsory part of the annual medical test for the troops," a recent directive issued by the force, accessed by PTI, says.

The new policy measure has been introduced by BSF Director General (DG) K K Sharma after he got a major research project conducted by UK-based experts with the help of force Inspector General (IG) Satwant A Trivedi, to analyse various triggers behind suicides and other stress factors suffered by troops and their possible solutions.

The force has also published a 62-page booklet titled 'Happiness and Health: Endeavour towards holistic well being' chronicling the new standard operating procedures (SoPs) for undertaking physical, psychological and socio-economic interventions, and ways to address the grievances and overall health issues of the about 2.5 lakh personnel strong paramilitary force.

"Research provides evidence to indicate that all such cases (of stress), if cared for, at the right time can take a turn towards mend. Valuable human resource needs to be nurtured carefully," Sharma wrote in the booklet that was unveiled by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday.

In this series, the Gujarat frontier of the force has also launched a 'Ghar ki Baat' initiative in which troops, on a fixed day of the week, gather at border posts along the India-Pakistan frontier and share their personal as well as professional problems.

This plan, a senior official said, will only be replicated at other forward locations of the force once the Gujarat experiment is found successful as not every person is willing to share his or her problem publicly.

The supervisory commanders of the force have been directed to undertake a number of other intervention techniques like interviewing the jawan as soon as he is back from leave.

"This exercise is seen as routine at times due to lack of interest of senior officers but it will help the commanding officer know about the various issues being faced by a jawan both at their homes and professional front," the new SoPs say in the booklet.

"Due to adherence of chain of command in making representation through proper channel, grievance redressal becomes more time taking," they say.

"More emphasis on informal interaction by superior commanders and creating more awareness on the availability of various channels for airing grievances, including through help-line numbers and others should be done," the SoPs say.

They also ask field commanders to undertake yoga, meditation, counselling and have a buddy system (one person responsible for the other) to check stress amongst the personnel.&nbsp

Talking about steps to prevent suicides, the new SOPs state that supervisory officers and fellow personnel should avoid "sermonising, arguing, giving advice or telling such a person to 'forget about it'", and instead should engage the individual and also deny him access to firearms.

As per official data, a total of 173 BSF personnel have committed suicide in the last five years, while over a dozen such deaths have happened this year.

These figures are much more than operational deaths in the line of duty, that took place during the same period.

The BSF jawans are deployed for long stints in inhospitable and harsh climate areas along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders, where they cannot keep their families for years together and all these factors contribute to complaints of stress and fatigue among them.&nbsp

Jawans are happy or not, BSF will test

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Sunday said that the Pakistan Rangers &nbsp;"pleaded" with them to stop firing along the IB after being pounded with heavy artillery that also left a trooper dead across the border.&nbsp;

The border guarding force also released a 19-second thermal-imagery footage showing the destruction of a Pakistani picket across the border in retaliation to the unprovoked firing and shelling along the IB.&nbsp;

"(Pakistan) Rangers called up Jammu BSF formation today and beseeched to stop firing," a BSF spokesman said.&nbsp;

"The befitting reply by BSF units to the unprovoked shelling and firing across the IB by Pakistani forces has forced them to plead for ceasefire," a senior official said.&nbsp;

"For the last three days, the precision fire of BSF troopers on Pakistani firing locations inflicted heavy losses and yesterday this firing found their mark with one of the rangers in chicken neck area," the official said.&nbsp;

The BSF had lost two of its jawans in this latest round of unprovoked firing on the Jammu IB over the last few days.&nbsp;

A number of civilians were also killed and injured in the Jammu area due to this firing incident which was seen to have increased in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir yesterday.&nbsp;

Pakistan Rangers calls BSF, requests to stop retaliatory firing

Pakistani cricketer&nbsp;Hasan Ali performed his signature wicket-taking&nbsp;gesture during the flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah border. His&nbsp;involvement in the ceremony has caused a stir.

A video had gone viral on social forums in which the Pakistani pacer Ali, was patting his thighs and raising his arms in front of soldiers from Pakistan Rangers. The move was exactly the same, how he does on cricket field after taking a wicket.&nbsp;

Ali gatecrashed the ceremony and did his trademark celebration facing the Indian crowd and BSF.

Hasan Ali gatecrashes Wagah ceremony, faces flak from twitterati; BSF to lodge protest

The unabated smuggling of fake Indian currency notes and attacks on BSF personnel by cross-border criminals are some of the issues that will be discussed at a high-level meeting of the chiefs of India and Bangladesh's frontier forces in Dhaka next week.&nbsp

A 10-member Border Security Force (BSF) delegation, led by Director General K K Sharma, will travel to the Bangladesh capital for the meeting at the headquarters of their counterpart, Border Guard Bangladesh, from April 23 to 27. 
The BGB team will be led by its DG Maj. Gen. Abul Hossain.

Officials said the BSF will take up the issue of the continuous inflow of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) from across the border and the attacks on its personnel by criminals based in Bangladesh.

They said that FICN with a face value of about Rs 13.66 lakh have been seized along the border up to March this year.&nbsp

FICN with face value of more than Rs 68.96 lakh were confiscated last year.&nbsp

Also, two BSF men were killed and 122 injured in criminal attacks on this frontier last year. 109 personnel were injured in 2016, the officials said.&nbsp

"These issues are a big concern for India and for the overall security situation on the India-Bangladesh international border. The talks will aim at finding better solutions to reduce and stop these instances," a senior officer said.

The Indian side, which will have officials from the Ministry of External Affairs, the Home Ministry and the anti-narcotics department, will also raise issues related to cattle smuggling, illegal migration and human trafficking, upkeep of border pillars and others along this IB, they said.

The BGB is expected to raise the matter of their nationals being killed or injured in BSF firing at the border and the illegal transport of drugs into their territory from the Indian side.&nbsp

The two forces will also discuss the progress of a "crime free zone" created recently along the border in West Bengal, with the efforts of the BSF and the BGB.&nbsp

This upcoming bi-annual DG-level talks will be the 46th such dialogue between the two sides. The last time the two forces met was in October 2017 in Delhi.

India, Bangladesh border forces to meet in Dhaka next week

China tried to make multiple intrusion attempts in Ladakh in March, said a report submitted to the Home Ministry by Indo-Tibetan Border Police(ITBP).

According to the ITBP report, China intruded into India on February 28, March 3 and March 7, 12, 2018, through trains near the northern Pangong lake.

The report further states that March also recorded a maximum number of intrusion by Chinese forces into the Ladakh region.

Chinese army intruded into three places near Pangong lake area during which the Chinese soldiers entered within 6 kilometers inside Indian territory.

However, the Chinese forces returned to their side after ITBP protested.

According to reports, China also infiltrated into Ladakh's Northern sub-sector on February 28, March 3 and 7 wherein they entered 7 kilometers inside the Indian territory. China retreated after meeting with retaliation from the Indian side.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Chinese military had also claimed in border personnel meeting in March that they had protested against the<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/china-objects-to-indias-transgression-in-arunachal-pradesh-india-rejects-the-protest-129126"> Indian army's 'transgression'</a> into the strategically sensitive Asaphila area along the disputed border in Arunachal Pradesh.

The India side had rejected these claims saying that the area in the upper Subansiri region of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to India and it was&nbsp;regularly carrying out patrols.

Chinese incursion around Pangong lake which extends from India to China is quite common as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) passes through the lake in the Aksai Chin territory.

Maximum Chinese intrusion in Ladakh occurred in March: Report

A report by a DRDO laboratory has said that the food provided to the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel is full of macro and micronutrients.

97% BSF personnel have expressed "satisfaction" with the quantity and quality of meals provided to them on duty at the borders and elsewhere.

The study was conducted by the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Science (DIPAS) on a special commission by the Border Security Force, after a BSF jawan, last year posted a video on a social media site claiming bad food was being served to the personnel.

The study, commissioned last year, was conducted by collecting data of "food preference and satisfaction level" from eight frontiers of the force -- four each from the western and the eastern command -- and focussed group discussion at 37 unit mess' and cook houses, it said.

"The report has summarised that the data...collected from 6,526 participants under eight frontiers with different terrain and the geographical area indicated that 97 per cent personnel are satisfied with respect to quantity and quality of food," the BSF said in a statement.

"The study has recorded average energy expenditure to be 3,400-3,500 kilocalories per day, while energy intake was 3,450 &nbsp335 kilo calories per day (of a personnel)." The study found that the food served by the BSF to its jawans and officers was able to provide all macro and micro-nutrients as per recommended dietary allowance of the Indian Council of Medical Research.

The expert's team, the BSF said, conducted the study by following a random sampling technique including all ranks, job profile/duties from different battalions and border out posts (BOPs) of the force.

"The assessment of food and nutrient intake has been done by food analysis, body composition, haematological profile, biochemical variable analysis, clinical examination and handgrip test," the force said, quoting the report submitted to it recently.

The BSF had commissioned the study to determine nutrient requirements of its personnel and adequacy of their diet under deployment, along with the determination of their food satisfaction level.

PTI, earlier this week, had reported that the paramilitary force has decided to get such a study done from a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) lab on the recommendation of a parliamentary panel that went into the subject of food quality and quantity issues highlighted by the jawan, constable Tej Bahadur Yadav, last year.

BSF Director General K K Sharma had told the news agency in an interview that an internal inquiry conducted by the force, in the wake of the allegations made by Yadav, had found that the quality and quantity of food being served was never an issue among its personnel.

DIPAS is mandated to provide nutritional advisory to the armed forces in terms of determining calorie nutrient requirements of soldiers deployed under different environment all over the country, and it also conducts periodical reviews of ration scales of nutritional adequacy of the troops.

The border guarding force is tasked to guard the two important and sensitive Indian borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. It also renders a variety of internal security duties across the country including undertaking anti-Naxal operations.

India celebrated its <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/10-asean-chief-guests-in-attendance-india-displays-military-might-cultural-diversity-30823">69th Republic Day</a> on Friday with 10 ASEAN leaders as chief guests in attendance. With impressive march pasts and colourful tableaux, the day&#39;s ceremony commenced with Prime Minister Narendra Modi laying the wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate to pay homage to the fallen soldier.

The highlight of the parade was motorcycle contingent &#39;Seema Bhawani&#39; of the Border Security Force (BSF), comprising women personnel of the force that showcased their skills for the first time at the parade.

As per tradition, the BSF and the Army&#39;s bike-borne &#39;daredevils&#39; end the parade on alternate years. But this time, members of the BSF&#39;s women motorcycle team replaced their male counterparts.

There was a loud cheer as the &quot;Seema Bhawani&quot; contingent performed fish riding, four harmony, sapt Rishi, brahma yog guldasta, seema prahari and flag march pyramid at the parade, where supreme commander of the Indian armed forces President Ram Nath Kovind took the salute.

The BSF &#39;daredevil&#39; team had made news a few years back when the then US President Barack Obama, while officiating as the chief guest of the 2015 parade, signalled a thumbs up to the bikers from his dais on Rajpath and had later called their stunts &quot;impressive&quot;.

The Indian Army&#39;s T-90 tank (Bhishma), Ballway Machine Pikate (II/IIK), Brahmos Missile System, Weapon Locating Radar (Swathi), Bridge Laying Tank T-72, Mobile Base Transceiver Station and Akash Weapon System were also showcased at the parade.

The country&#39;s first indigenously-built Weapon System Integrated helicopter Rudra, designed and developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), also made its debut at the parade on Friday.

The BSF and Pakistan Rangers today held a flag meeting along the International Border (IB) here during which India registered its strong protest on the recent spate of firing from Pakistan, asserting that such &quot;provocative&quot; acts would &quot;not be tolerated&quot;.&nbsp;

The Border Security Force said the sector commander-level meeting took place in Suchetgarh area of the border &quot;on the request&quot; of the Pakistani side.&nbsp;
