The Bolivian government “has decided to break diplomatic relations with the Israeli state in repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani during a press conference.&nbsp;

Bolivia has also called for a ceasefire and an end to “the blockade that prevents the entry of food, water and other essential elements for life,” Mamani added.&nbsp;

She also said that Bolivia demands an end to the attacks&nbsp;in Gaza which have “caused thousands of civilian deaths and the forced displacement of Palestinians.”&nbsp;

<h2>Not the first time</h2>

The government of leftist President Luis Arce is the first in Latin America to cut ties with Israel. However, this is not the first time that Bolivia has cut ties with Israel over its actions in Gaza.&nbsp;

In 2009, Bolivia under the government of leftist President Evo Morales, cut diplomatic ties with Israel in protest of its actions in Gaza. It was not until 2020, the government of right-wing interim President Jeanine Anez, that the country re-established ties with Israel.&nbsp;

The announcement on Tuesday also comes a day after Arce met with the Palestinian ambassador to Bolivia. “We reject the war crimes being committed in Gaza. We support international initiatives to guarantee humanitarian aid, in compliance with international law,” said the Bolivian president.

Chile's&nbsp;foreign ministry released a statement saying that the country "strongly condemns and observes with great concern... these military operations," referring to Israel's operations in Gaza.&nbsp;

Israel's operations amounted to "collective punishment" of Gaza's civilian population, said the ministry, calling for an&nbsp;immediate end to hostilities, the release of hostages held by Palestinian militants who control Gaza as well as allow&nbsp;the transit of humanitarian aid.&nbsp;

Bolivian prosecutors are investigating 35 members of the Catholic Church after more than a dozen victims accused them of sexual abuse, authorities said Tuesday.

The statement comes as the country is reeling from confessions of abuse that were found in the personal diary of a Spanish priest who died in&nbsp;Bolivia&nbsp;in 2009 after decades of service there.

"At present, 35 people are accused and under investigation," Daniela Caceres, a department head at the Bolivian attorney general's office, told a press conference.&nbsp;

"We have 17 people, identified victims, but out of respect and as a precaution for the protection of the victims, we are not going to give specific details," she added.&nbsp;

Prosecutors opened an investigation following a report by the Spanish daily El Pais in April about the late Spanish priest Alfonso Pedrajas, whose diary indicated that he had abused more than 80 minors in&nbsp;Bolivia, where he had lived since the early 1970s.&nbsp;

Pedrajas also noted in his journal that senior clergy had known about his crimes and kept quiet.

Prosecutors on Tuesday confirmed that a copy of Pedrajas' diary had been delivered to them by the Society of Jesus in&nbsp;Bolivia.

But Caceres said the diary was not complete, with some pages skipped and some passages crossed out and erased.

She said Bolivian authorities will try to obtain the complete document or request the cooperation of Spanish prosecutors.

In a letter released in mid-June by Bolivian President Luis Arce, Pope Francis expressed his "shame and dismay" at the sexual abuse committed by the clerics and vowed to shed light on what happened.&nbsp;

Arce's government has discussed with the Vatican the need to improve controls to prevent priests with a history of sex offences from entering the country.

The Catholic Church has also set up four commissions to receive and process complaints.

Moreover, Luis Fernando Camacho received detention for four months for allegedly forming a coup against Morales. The former president ceased work in 2019 when he lost the support of his army amid strikes.&nbsp;

However, his arrest flared countrywide protests in Bolivia.&nbsp;

The Bolivian government has picked a consortium including&nbsp;Chinese battery giant CATL to develop its largely untapped lithium reserves. A report by the news agency Reuters on Friday (January 20) said the deal would see the consortium partner direct lithium extraction from Bolivia's Uyuni and Oruro salt flats.&nbsp;The partnership would give the CBC consortium the rights to develop two lithium plants which can produce up to 25,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate each annually.&nbsp; 
 
China's CATL specialises in manufacturing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage systems but it does not produce lithium at present though it has invested in many Chinese projects. The report said that two years back, the company lost the bid to buy the Millenial Lithium Corp.&nbsp;

Speaking on Friday's deal, Bolivian President Luis Arce said that the CBC consortium would invest more than $1 billion in the project's first stage to boost infrastructure, roads and conditions required to start the lithium plants the country hopes will one day produce lithium cathodes and batteries.

“CBC will make an investment of more than one billion dollars in the first stage. One billion dollars that will help improve electric energy at the places where it will be established, roads, basic services, conditions for the constructions of the plants that will produce the lithium cathodes and batteries,” he said.&nbsp;

"Today begins the era of industrialisation of Bolivian lithium," Arce said, adding there was no time to lose in developing the metal. The president also said that talks were ongoing for potential partnerships with other foreign firms.&nbsp;

Bolivia's energy minister Franklin Molina, meanwhile, said the deal showed there were "sovereign alternatives to the privatisation models of lithium exploitation." State firm YLB is set to supervise and play a central part in the project.&nbsp;

As per the US Geological Survey, Bolivia's salt flats are home to the world's largest lithium resources at 21 million tonnes. However, the country has almost no industrial production or commercially viable reserves. The report added that the partnership with the CBC consortium could help finally unlock Bolivia's huge potential as a supplier of lithium for batteries needed to power the global shift to electric vehicles.&nbsp;

Prominent opposition leader and Bolivian city, Santa Cruz governor, Luis Fernando Camacho, was detained by the country’s police on Wednesday, after being charged with “terrorism”. The incident has since sparked protests and marked a major escalation between President Luis Arce’s government and Camacho’s supporters.&nbsp;

The former right-wing presidential candidate and 43-year-old, Camacho has reportedly been under investigation for a number of allegations including his potential involvement in the ouster of former president Evo Morales in 2019, which the South American nation’s government categorises as a “coup”, as well as inciting unrest in Santa Cruz last year.&nbsp;

The public prosecutor’s office without giving additional details on the arrest has said that Camacho has been detained and charged with “terrorism” for his alleged involvement in the ouster of Morales.&nbsp;

Camacho’s allies and lawmakers Paola Aguirre and Erwin Bazan alleged that firearms were used during the arrest, while the Santa Cruz government have reportedly described his arrest as “kidnapping” following a “completely irregular police operation.”&nbsp;

According to the city’s government, “The operation to kidnap the governor was carried out in the streets near his home, as he was returning from his duties”. Meanwhile, Camacho’s supporters have taken to the street, torched the regional prosecutor's office in Santa Cruz, and blocked roads with stones, trees, and cars demanding his release.&nbsp;

Additionally, the protestors had also blocked two airports in the city, in a bid to stop his transfer to La Paz but were ultimately unsuccessful, however, several flights at both airports had to be suspended. As protests erupted in Santa Cruz, yet again, long queues were witnessed as people rushed to stock up on food and gas fearing road blockages.&nbsp;

“We inform the Bolivian people that the Bolivian police executed an arrest warrant against Luis Fernando Camacho”, said the country’s interior minister Carlos Eduardo Del Castillo. Furthermore, the official also indicated that Camacho was taken to La Paz, the Bolivian administrative capital, for questioning in relation to the allegations.&nbsp;

Subsequently, he also took to Twitter, to assure people that the Santa Cruz governor’s health is “stable” and he is undergoing medical assessment rejecting the claims that he had been injured.

If convicted, Camacho could face at least 15 to 20 years in jail, said a report by Reuters, citing a constitutional lawyer Israel Quino on state media. The arrest follows weeks of unrest in the South American city of Santa Cruz, which has reportedly been led by Camacho against Arce’s administration.&nbsp;

Marching to protest against animal abuse, leashed dogs were dressed in costumes such as police officers or astronauts with jet packs.

Dogs are blessed with holy water after mass at the parish of Villa Adela which pays tribute to French noble Saint Roch. According to a legend, he travelled to Italy to care for plague victims and became the patron of dogs.

According to Villa Adela’s priest, Justino Limachi, “Dogs are creatures of God and must be cared for. First we vaccinate them and then we give blessings starting with the owners for them to take care of the dogs because we see so many street dogs suffering hunger and cold.”

Monica Hurtado, who was among the people attending was owner of two pups, told news agency Reuters that dogs brought joy to her life after her parent’s passing.

The celebrations were brought forward a couple of days to land on the weekend as Saint Roch’s day is usually celebrated on August 16.

Nearby street dogs fought over scraps in garbage dumps while owners brought their groomed pooches for the mass.

With about a half million living on the streets, the Ministry of Health estimates there is an overpopulation of 3 million dogs in Bolivia.
