Pop superstar Beyonce on Sunday invited the mothers of slain African-American men to the MTV Video Music Awards, where her politically charged "Formation" is up for the top prize.

Beyonce, dressed angelically in a long glittery silver skirt topped by light blue wings and a staggering amount of jewellery, also brought her daughter Blue Ivy to the music gala at New York's Madison Square Garden.

The singer entered the red carpet silently with the mothers of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Oscar Grant and Trayvon Martin, all African Americans whose lives were cut short in contested circumstances.

Martin, 17, was killed in 2012 by a white neighborhood guard, helping trigger the Black Lives Matter movement. Brown, Garner and Grant were all killed by law enforcement.

The mothers of all four men except Grant appeared in Beyonce's film "Lemonade", which was intertwined with an album of the same name.

"Formation", the first single off the album, was the most politically charged track of Beyonce's career.

Inspired by the bounce hip-hop scene of New Orleans, the video at one point depicts police officers raising their hands as if under arrest.

Beyonce is nominated for a total of 11 awards on Sunday, more than any other artist.

Beyonce Legion, a fan Twitter account that is generally well-informed, said that the singer wore $12.6 million worth of diamonds in rings and earrings.

Beyonce invites mothers of slain black men to MTV awards

Beyonce's much talked about visual album 'Lemonade' on Tuesday (July 26) earned the R&B singer a career best 11 nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards in a list that included multiple nods for Adele and rapper Kanye West but nothing for Taylor Swift.

Adele's YouTube-shattering video for her 2015 comeback single "Hello" notched up seven nominations, and the sultry British singer earned an 8th mention for 'Send My Love (To your New Lover)'.

The controversial video for West's 'Famous' - which features portrayals of 12 nude celebrities including Swift sleeping next to the rapper - got two nominations, including the top award of video of the year. Swift and West have been publicly feuding for months about whether the pop star approved lyrics in which West boasts about making her famous.

Swift, 26, who has dominated music awards shows in the past five years, won four MTV music video prizes in 2015, including for the single 'Bad Blood' with Kendrick Lamar.

But this year she did not score any nominations despite releasing 'Out of the Woods' and 'New Romantics' in late 2015 and early 2016.

Video of the year pits Beyonce's politically-charged vidoe for 'Formation' against Adele's 'Hello' Canadian rapper Drake's 'Hotline Bling', Justin Bieber's 'Sorry' and West's 'Famous'.

Rihanna scored multiple nominations for her collaborations with DJ Calvin Harris on 'This is What You Came For', and with Drake on 'Work'.

David Bowie, who died unexpectedly in January of cancer days after releasing a new album, also made it onto the list with nominations for best direction, art, editing and cinematography for his singles 'Blackstar' and 'Lazarus'.

The MTV Video Music Awards, which have a reputation for irreverence and shock tactics, take place this year in New York on August 28 and will air live on MTV. The awards are voted on by fans, starting on Tuesday. A host for the 2016 show is yet to be announced.

MTV Awards: Beyonce grabs 11 nominations, Taylor Swift fails to make an impression

Pop star Beyonce pleaded on Thursday for an end to the "war" on minorities in the United States after another two contentious killings by police of African-Americans.

The singer, who has been increasingly outspoken on police brutality, provided a link to her legions of fans to contact US legislators to protest the deaths of motorist Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

"This is not a plea to all police officers, but toward any human being who fails to value human life. The war on people of colour and all minorities needs to be over," Beyonce wrote in an open letter on her website and to her more than 77 million followers on Instagram.

Beyonce voiced fear that the killings, the latest in a series of racially charged shootings in the United States, would make minorities feel "helpless and hopeless".

"But we have to believe that we are fighting for the rights of the next generation, for the next young men and women who believe in good," she wrote.

"This is a human fight. No matter your race, gender or sexual orientation. This is a fight for anyone who feels marginalised, who is struggling for freedom and human rights."

Beyonce, who rose to stardom with catchy but largely apolitical hits such as "Crazy in Love" and "Single Ladies", aligned herself with the Black Lives Matter movement in a video earlier this year for her song "Formation".
