Scientists have found that an asteroid which crashed into the Earth’s atmosphere earlier this year was spinning at the highest rate ever known, which was one spin every 2.

Scientists have found that an asteroid which crashed into the Earth’s atmosphere earlier this year was spinning at the highest rate ever known, which was one spin every 2.6 seconds. The asteroid, known as 2024 BX1, is probably not more than one metre wide and entered the atmosphere of Earth on January 21 and fell into pieces over Berlin, Germany. However, some pieces survived the fireball and were later recovered. First asteroid to have been spotted before entering Earth's atmosphere It was a rare case where the scientists were able to track the fall of the asteroid and spot the celestial rock before it entered the atmosphere of the Earth. In this case, it was seen just three hours ahead of the asteroid's entry. The images of the asteroid were taken by Maxime Devogele and his colleagues at the European Space Agency’s Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre in Italy before impact. Also Read: "Hazardous asteroid" Apophis to make close flyby of Earth in five years; How are scientists prepping for it? The asteroid, which was moving at some 50,000 kilometres per hour, had an elongated shape which meant changes in its brightness due to rotation. Such changes in brightness corresponded with the rotation time of 2.588 seconds, which was roughly 30,000 rotations per day. “It’s the fastest [spin] we’ve ever observed,” Devogele said. The asteroids are known to spin due to various reasons, such as collisions they may have faced earlier in their life. The space rocks in general are bigger than a kilometre and cannot rotate more than once every 2.2 hours because they will break apart. However, smaller asteroids like 2024 BX1 can withstand much faster spins since they are more compact. “They have internal strength, so they can rotate faster,” Devogele said. Watch: Gravitas | The impact of NASA asteroid deflection Observing the spin of objects is more useful for planetary defence which helps scientists understand how strong a small asteroid is and how it is likely to survive its passage through the atmosphere of the Earth. “If it’s hard, it will react differently than if it’s a piece of snow that has no internal strength,” says Devogele. Germany on Monday (Apr 8) rejected Nicaragua's allegations that it had violated the Genocide Convention, terming them "grossly biased".

“Germany rejects the allegations made by Nicaragua today. Germany does not and never did violate the Genocide Convention nor international humanitarian law, neither directly nor indirectly," legal advisor Tania von Uslar-Gleichen told journalists at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

"On the contrary Germany’s committed to the uphold of international law and this is what we work for internationally. We will tomorrow present our position in detail to this court. So much I can already tell you today, Nicaragua’s presentation was grossly biased and we will be telling you tomorrow how we fully live up to our responsibilities," Tania added.

Berlin is set to present its case in more detail on Tuesday (Apr 9) in the court.

Nicaragua in its case that it presented before the International Court of Justice on Monday (Apr 8) demanded the World Court to pass an order to Germany halting the exports of military ammunition to Israel.

It also sought the restoration of funding for the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, stating concerns about Genocide in Gaza.

Nicaragua's agent ambassador Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez told the court that Berlin had violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by continuing to supply Israel with arms even after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled it was plausible that Israel violated some rights guaranteed under the genocide convention during its assault on Gaza.

"There can be no question that Germany (...)was well aware, and is well aware, of at least the serious risk of genocide being committed," Arguello Gomez said.

Germany: Scholz promises action after Molotovs hurled at synagogue

A little more than a year after banning transgender women from competing in elite female swimming events, the World Aquatics, earlier this week, cancelled its first 'open races' for transgenders after no one registered for the event. The World Cup meeting was scheduled to take place in Berlin but the organisers were forced to scrap the event after receiving no entries.

"Following the close of registration for the open category competitions, World Aquatics can confirm that no entries have been received for the Open Category events," World Aquatics said in a statement.

The open category was set to feature 50-metre and 100-metre races across all strokes as part of a "pioneering pilot project'. It was last year that the governing body of the sport decided to introduce a new category for athletes whose gender identity is different from their birth sex, after banning transgender participation.

World Aquatics to continue its efforts

Despite receiving no entries, the global body is aiming to persist with the endeavour and will include the category at masters events in future.

'The World Aquatics open category working group will continue its work and engagement with the aquatics community on open category events. Even if there is no current demand at the elite level, the working group is planning to look at the possibility of including open category races at masters events in the future.'

British Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies - a vocal critic of transgender women competing in women's sport - took to social media and trashed the transgender females for not turning up to face their competition.

"If trans women aren't going to get the physical benefit of racing females instead of others males, they're not interested!" said Davies.

In June 2022, World Aquatics' (formerly known as FINA), voted to allow only those who had completed their transition by the age of 12 to take part in women's competitions. The decision was prompted after reviewing the success of American Lia Thomas, who despite being a moderate college swimmer as a male competitor, managed to win an NCAA national college title in the women's category after transitioning.

A section of the sporting world believes that it is unfair to biological females when transgender females compete against them. Despite the transition, the transgenders possess visible physical advantages over their female counterparts which leads to an uneven playing field. The 'Open' event was aimed at providing a solution but it may have thrown more questions than before, experts say.

A German lawmaker has lashed out at her government for imposing sanctions on Russia that were now “jeopardising” their own economy.

Sevim Dagdelen, a German MP from the Left Party (Die Linke), recently penned an op-ed for the Berliner Zeitung, in which she came down heavily on the German government for taking actions against Russia that were now “backfiring.”

“In order to ruin Russia, it was hoped that the punitive measures that violate international law will have a long-lasting effect. But the reality is different. Even the Russian auto industry is recovering. Chinese companies are stepping in for the German manufacturers who leave Russia,” Dagdelen wrote in her op-ed.

She also claimed that sanctions were actually strengthening Russia while stagnation looms over the German economy.

“Contrary to what was hoped, Russia has not been ruined. The consequences of the sanctions are evident, but on our side. While Germany’s economy collapsed by 0.3% in the last quarter and stagnation is also threatening the Eurozone, Russia is now forecast to grow by 2.5% this year. As is often the case, a merciless idealism characteristic of the German ruling party obscures the view of reality,” She wrote.

‘German govt acting like Kamikaze pilot’

While launching a scathing attack on the German government, the lawmaker then goes on to draw a parallel between Kamikaze pilots and the German leadership. Kamikaze pilots would crash their planes into major enemy military installations to inflict losses on the other side, but which would also kill them instantly.

“The federal government acts here like a kamikaze pilot, replacing politics with dubious morality and is happy about a friendly nod from Washington,” she stated, noting that double-digit inflation in Germany is the product of sanctions, as well as the “ever increasing military support for Ukraine.”

Russian economy still afloat

Western sanctions are undeniably exacerbating challenges for the Russian economy, particularly through targeting Russia's income from oil and gas exports. Nevertheless, the Kremlin has various strategies at its disposal to sustain its military-focused economy, as reported by the Financial Times

One feasible approach might include increasing withdrawals from Russia's National Welfare Fund, essentially a reserve of readily available assets such as gold and Chinese renminbi intended for emergency situations. Additionally, the government could opt to expand domestic bond issuance to generate much-needed funds.

To address issues like capital flight and the devaluation of the ruble, there are further options to consider. This might involve imposing capital controls and mandating that exporters convert their foreign earnings into Russian currency.

Furthermore, the government might choose to raise taxes or reduce non-military government expenditures, or even pursue a combination of these measures.

Police in Germany on Thursday (July 20) warned residents of Berlin's southern suburbs to watch out for a potentially dangerous animal, suspected to be a lioness, that was on the loose. Early Thursday, police in Brandenburg issued the warning of an escaped wild animal and asked people in and around Kleinmachnow, Teltow and Stahnsdorf not to leave their houses and to bring their pets indoors.

The warning was later extended to southern areas of Berlin and an alert was sent on an official warning app that the animal was suspected to be a lioness, news agency Associated Press reported.

Speaking to a local broadcaster, police spokesperson Daniel Keip said that two men reported seeing a big cat running after a wild boar, and they recorded this on a phone. "Even experienced police officers had to confirm it is probably a lioness," Keip added.

The report said that neither of Berlin's zoos nor any circuses or animal shelters in the area were missing a lioness. Police increased their presence Kleinmachnow area and warned people of the possible danger.

However, there was no order to stay indoors and people were seen walking dogs and cycling. The local council, meanwhile, said that child daycare centres were open, but children were not being allowed into their outside yards.
