Govt will take appropriate action at the right time: Jaishankar on Bangladesh crisis

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina continues to be in India after she fled her country following violent protests; she's seeking political asylum in the United Kingdom which according to sources has been denied. Watch in for more details!

Bangladesh Protests: Who is General Waker-Uz-Zaman, army chief who announced Hasina's resignation?

In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5, marking the end of an era in South Asian politics. Hasina, who had just won a record fifth term in January, was offered safe passage to India and is expected to seek asylum elsewhere.

This sudden departure has sent shockwaves through the region and poses significant challenges to India's strategic interests.

Sheikh Hasina's legacy

Hasina's legacy is complex and consequential. Under her leadership, Bangladesh transformed from a struggling nation to an economic powerhouse, becoming the world's second-largest garment exporter after China. Per capita income tripled in the last decade, and she was seen as a bulwark against extremism and army rule in a region plagued by instability.

In India, she was viewed as a trusted strategic partner who shared strong personal chemistry with Prime Minister Modi.

Sheikh Hasina's downfall: Muzzled Opposition, jailed rivals

The immediate trigger for Hasina's resignation was her mishandling of student protests demanding quota reforms. Instead of engaging with their concerns, her government resorted to heavy-handed tactics, including internet shutdowns, police brutality, and inflammatory rhetoric.

This approach led to widespread anger and violence, ultimately fueling the movement that forced her from power.

Looking back, Hasina's downfall can be attributed to several factors. Despite being a victim of political persecution herself, she resorted to muzzling opposition, jailing rivals, and creating a de facto one-party state. Her regime was increasingly seen as corrupt and nepotistic, with government jobs filled by party loyalists. The rise of a police state and its associated abuses alienated many citizens.

Economic challenges, including high unemployment and inflation, exacerbated by post-Covid recovery struggles, fueled discontent. Additionally, Hasina was perceived as too close to India, particularly in countering terrorism and radicalism, which some saw as compromising Bangladesh's interests.

Hasina's Bangladesh exit: View from India

For India, Hasina's exit presents multiple challenges. It represents the loss of a trusted partner in a volatile region and potentially destabilises India's eastern border, complicating security issues in the northeast. It also creates opportunities for China and Pakistan to expand their influence in Bangladesh. The coming weeks may see disruptions in bilateral connectivity and tensions in security and counter-terror cooperation. There's also a risk of increased illegal migration into India due to political and economic uncertainty in Bangladesh.

India's foreign policy establishment is understandably concerned. Prime Minister Modi has already convened high-level meetings to address the situation. However, it's crucial to remember that the fundamentals of India-Bangladesh relations remain strong. The logic of geography and shared economic interests should prevent any significant long-term deterioration in ties.

Moving forward, India must tread carefully. New Delhi should reaffirm its commitment to Dhaka's democratic process and economic development while avoiding the appearance of interference. By positioning itself as a stable, trusted partner regardless of who is in power in Dhaka, New Delhi can help ensure that this crisis becomes an opportunity for strengthening democratic institutions in Bangladesh rather than sliding into chaos.

The coming months will be critical. How India navigates this challenge will have profound implications not just for bilateral relations, but for the stability and prosperity of the entire South Asian region.

Despite the current volatility, it is likely that the historic India-Bangladesh ties will endure, and Bangladesh will resume its political and economic progress. India must assert, both publicly and privately, that a democratic, rising India remains a trusted and historic partner in Bangladesh's journey towards power and prosperity.

London or Delhi? What next for Bangladesh's ousted former PM Sheikh Hasina

The dramatic helicopter flight of ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from Bangladesh on Monday (August 5), amid pressure from protesters and the Army is not a first in the South Asian nation's history.

Since independence, around half a century ago, many of the country's leaders have been forced to flee or had their time in office cut short by violent deaths.

Here’s a look back at five key points in Bangladesh's unstable history.

1975: Assassinations and coups in large numbers

Formerly known as East Pakistan, Bangladesh came out as a new nation in 1971 after a brutal war involving India.

Independence hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the country's first prime minister before introducing a one-party system and assuming the presidency in January 1975.

Within a year Rahman was assassinated by a group of soldiers on August 15, along with his wife and three sons.

Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad, with the support of the army, then came to power.

Ahmad's tenure was short-lived. He was brought down in a coup instigated by the army chief of staff Khaled Mosharraf on November 3, who was assassinated in turn by rival mutineers.

After a series of further coups and counter-coups, General Ziaur Rahman took power on November 7.

1981-83 : Bloody revolt, bloodless coup

In less than 6 years of being in power, General Ziaur Rahman was assassinated during an attempted revolt on May 30, 1981.

Vice-president Abdus Sattar took over as interim president with the backing of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

But Ershad turned out Sattar within a year, overthrowing him in a bloodless coup on March 24, 1982.
Instantly after the takeover, he imposed martial law and installed Ahsanuddin Chowdhury as president.

Then, on December 11, 1983, Ershad declared himself head of state. Chowdhury, whose role was honorary, subsequently led a political party loyal to the general.

1990: General Hussain Muhammad Ershad resigns after widespread protests

After widespread protests for democracy in Bangladesh, Ershad had to resign as president on December 6, 1990. Ershad was then arrested on December 12 and jailed after being convicted for corruption.

Justice Minister Shahabuddin Ahmed took over as interim leader until elections could be held the year after.

1991: First free elections

The country witnessed its first free elections in early 1991, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) running out as clear winners.

Khaleda Zia, General Ziaur Rahman's widow, became Bangladesh's first woman prime minister.

She was succeeded by her arch-rival Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of the country's founding father Mujibur Rahman, after Hasina's Awami League defeated the BNP at the ballot box in 1996.

×

The BNP returned to power in 2001, with Khaleda Zia once again becoming prime minister and completing her term of office in October 2006.

2007: Anti-corruption purge

In 2007, with the army's support, President Iajuddin Ahmed declared a state of emergency after anti-government protests.

A military-led transitional government then initiated an anti-corruption purge, imprisoning both Hasina and Zia on graft allegations before their release in 2008.

Following her party's victory in the December 2008 elections, Hasina once again became prime minister.

Since independence, around half a century ago, many of the country's leaders have been forced to flee or had their time in office cut short by violent deaths. Here’s a look back at five key points in Bangladesh's unstable history. 1975: Assassinations and coups in large numbers Formerly known as East Pakistan, Bangladesh came out as a new nation in 1971 after a brutal war involving India. Independence hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the country's first prime minister before introducing a one-party system and assuming the presidency in January 1975. Within a year Rahman was assassinated by a group of soldiers on August 15, along with his wife and three sons. Also read: Sajeeb Wazed, son of Ex-PM Hasina, tells WION: 'Bangladesh will be next Pak' Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad, with the support of the army, then came to power. Ahmad's tenure was short-lived. He was brought down in a coup instigated by the army chief of staff Khaled Mosharraf on November 3, who was assassinated in turn by rival mutineers. After a series of further coups and counter-coups, General Ziaur Rahman took power on November 7. 1981-83 : Bloody revolt, bloodless coup In less than 6 years of being in power, General Ziaur Rahman was assassinated during an attempted revolt on May 30, 1981. Chowdhury, whose role was honorary, subsequently led a political party loyal to the general. 1990: General Hussain Muhammad Ershad resigns after widespread protests After widespread protests for democracy in Bangladesh, Ershad had to resign as president on December 6, 1990. Ershad was then arrested on December 12 and jailed after being convicted for corruption. Justice Minister Shahabuddin Ahmed took over as interim leader until elections could be held the year after. 1991: First free elections The country witnessed its first free elections in early 1991, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) running out as clear winners. × The BNP returned to power in 2001, with Khaleda Zia once again becoming prime minister and completing her term of office in October 2006. 2007: Anti-corruption purge In 2007, with the army's support, President Iajuddin Ahmed declared a state of emergency after anti-government protests. A military-led transitional government then initiated an anti-corruption purge, imprisoning both Hasina and Zia on graft allegations before their release in 2008. Following her party's victory in the December 2008 elections, Hasina once again became prime minister. (With inputs from agencies)
