Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has said that the former Prime Minister and party's Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman will stand for elections if they are fit. Zia, who was released earlier this week is recovering in a hospital, while Rahman has been living in London and faces several cases against him in Bangladesh. Rahman is the son of Zia and has been leading the party operations from London. Speaking to WION from Dhaka, the secretary general of BNP said, "Why not? If they come back and fit to contest the elections, why not. Party chief has to stand for elections, they are fit physically. If she is fit to contest the elections physically. If she is physically fit, definitely and if Mr Tarique Rahman is fit, he will contest the elections". The comments come at a time when the ousted PM Sheikh Hasina's government collapsed following widespread protests in the country and an interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus took charge. Alamgir welcomed the Yunus-led government and said Bangladeshis have "benefited from his microcredit" policies, terming him a "capable man" to lead the country. He spoke about the current situation in his country and expressed optimism that things are going back to normal. Condemning the attacks on Hindus, Alamgir said, "violence is not targeting the Hindu minorities. Residences of Awami leaguers have been attacked. This has been brought under control". Immediately after Hasina fled Bangladesh and resigned from the prime ministership of the country, widespread violence was seen in which minority Hindus were also targeted. India had expressed its concerns over such attacks on minorities. He also highlighted issues like water sharing between the two countries. Alamgir assured that his party will not give space to anti-India insurgents on Bangladeshi territory. BNP has been in power in Bangladesh in the past and is one of the two major political parties of the country, along with the Awami League.

The first priority of Bangladesh's caretaker government is to improve law and order in the strife-torn country by restoring the morale of law enforcement agencies, its newly-appointed interior ministry adviser told Reuters on Friday.

Brigadier General (retired) M Sakhawat Hossain said the administration was "very concerned" about reports of vandalism and attacks on minorities, adding that some were "slightly exaggerated".

"Yes, there is a problem because law enforcement agencies are not there," he said. "They have to be given confidence so that they can come back."

Police across the South Asian country of 170 million people have been in disarray since long-time leader Sheikh Hasina abruptly resigned as prime minister and fled to India on Monday after a wave of student-led protests that turned violent and called for her ouster.

About 300 people were killed and thousands injured since the protests and clashes escalated in July and security forces sought to curb them.

Police stations have been deserted by officers, with students and volunteers among those who have formed groups to patrol neighbourhoods in the capital Dhaka and manage traffic on the streets of the sprawling metropolis, local media reported.

Many homes and businesses of the country's minority Hindu community have also been vandalised this week, prompting hundreds of them in northwest Bangladesh to try and flee to neighbouring India.

That group of around 700-800 Hindus returned to their homes after the local administration provided them security.

With morale among personnel "drastically low", Hossain said he would reach out to law enforcement agencies immediately to restore confidence, which could be followed by reforms.

"After such a big upheaval, which has almost broken down the whole chain, it will definitely take some time," he said. "Now they are being attacked, thanas (police stations) are being attacked. How will these poor fellows be going about?"

Bangladesh has around 190,000 police personnel, according to official data.

Bangladesh unrest: Improving law and order is top priority, says interior ministry

#Gravitas Bangladesh's new interim government has been sworn in. Sheikh Hasina, a name synonymous with power in Bangladesh for decades, is now history. The new interim government is not made up of seasoned politicians or battle-tested leaders. This time, the helm of Bangladesh’s governance will be handed over to individuals who have never contested an election. The question on everyone’s mind is can they bring Bangladesh towards normalcy, revive the economy, or will they crumble in the face of harsh political realities?

Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist, will be sworn in as the leader of Bangladesh's interim government today (August 8) after violent protests forced PM Sheikh Hasina to resign. Watch in for more details!

Bangladesh has no prime minister or ministers. Here's why

After Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to neighbouring India, Bangladesh had no elected government between August 5 to August 8. The interim government has no prime minister or ministers per se. An interim government, which in this case is led by Yunus, will lead the country for a certain period and oversee the election to transition power to an elected government.

Bangladesh: Muhammad Yunus to be sworn in as chief advisor of the interim govt

Nearly 600 people from Bangladesh were stopped from entering India at a border point in the Indian state of West Bengal by the Border Security Force (BSF), which has been on high alert since Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled the country on Monday.

On Wednesday (Aug 7), a day before an interim government was set to take control in Bangladesh, hundreds from the country tried to enter India, pleading with BSF officers for entry, claiming they feared for their lives.

As per a report by India Today, roughly 1,000 Bangladeshi Hindus have gathered at the India-Bangladesh border in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, due to the unstable conditions in Bangladesh. The BSF, however, has prevented them from crossing into India.

Officials reported that the group attempted to cross into India at Dakshin Berubari village in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district.

"They appealed to us and asked to be let into the country, saying that they were afraid of being attacked and also feared for their lives. It was explained to them that it is not possible to let them enter in this fashion," said an official.

While some people in the group left, many remained at the border late Wednesday evening, hoping to be allowed entry. A local resident told news agency PTI that the people gathered across the barbed wire were pleading to be let in.

"But we are helpless. They recounted their horrific experiences," the resident said.

Tensions had been rising in Bangladesh since before the January 7 elections, which were overwhelmingly won by Hasina's Awami League but were widely criticised as not being free and fair.

Student protests began in June after a Bangladeshi high court reinstated a 30 per cent reservation in government jobs for family members of freedom fighters and veterans from Bangladesh's 1971 War of Independence. Although the quota was later reduced by the country's supreme court, the ousted PM's handling of the situation angered students.

Protests continued with students demanding that Hasina step down. Clashes between protesters and the police resulted in over 100 deaths and numerous injuries across the country.

On Monday, hundreds of thousands of students took to the streets and marched towards the prime minister's official residence, Ganabhaban, forcing her to resign and flee the country.
