Indian Ministry of Mines has cancelled the auction of 14 out of 18 critical mineral blocks that were put up for sale in the second tranche of auctions.

According to a notice issued by the ministry on June 21, the auction process for five blocks located in Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan was annulled as no bids were received. These blocks had minerals such as vanadium, graphite, chromium, and potash.

In addition to this, the auction process for nine other blocks, including those with deposits of tungsten, limestone, and cobalt, was also cancelled as the number of bids received was fewer than the minimum requirement of three.

These blocks were spread across the states of Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Arunachal Pradesh. The sale of these mineral blocks is part of the government's ambitious $362 billion initiative launched in February to promote the exploration and development of critical minerals.

The feather that went under the hammer earlier this week was estimated to fetch somewhere between $2,000-$3,000.&nbsp;However, it ended up exceeding expectations.&nbsp;

According to Auckland-based Webb’s Auction House, the feather of the bird which was last spotted in the 20th century has previously sold for up to $5,100.&nbsp;

Morris told the Guardian that she believes that the single feather’s excellent condition and the efforts to protect it with archival paper and UV glass as well as the story of the huia, drove up the bids.&nbsp;

According to the British newspaper, the specimen was one of the best huia feathers the house had seen come to market.

<h2>More expensive than gold?</h2>

The feather which weighs approximately nine grams was also deemed far more valuable than gold.&nbsp;

On the day of the auction which took place on Monday (May 20), gold was worth $127 per gram, while when compared to the price it was sold at, one gram of the feather was worth $5,169.&nbsp;

The huia which was also the largest of New Zealand’s wattlebird species, known for its beautiful song was considered a prized bird, which sadly also proved fatal for the species.&nbsp;

The last confirmed sighting of the bird with predominantly black glossy feathers and white-tipped long-tail feathers was in 1907.&nbsp;

The 14-carat gold Waltham pocket watch which once belonged to wealthy business magnate, John Jacob Astor, 47, is expected to fetch up to $189,562 in the auction by Henry Aldridge &amp; Son in Wiltshire.

Astor, who went down with the ship in 1912 was said to be one of the world’s richest men at the time. He was reputedly the richest man aboard the ship and a prominent member of the Astor family.

According to auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, Astor’s net worth was around $87 million, at the time, which would be equivalent to several billion dollars today.&nbsp;

Astor was reportedly last seen smoking a cigarette and talking to another passenger after he safely seated his pregnant second wife Madeleine into a lifeboat. She later&nbsp;survived.&nbsp;

The gold pocket watch has “JJA” engraved on it and was found when Astor’s body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean seven days after the ship sank on its maiden voyage to New York.&nbsp;

Notably, the watch was claimed by John’s son Vincent who then passed it on to the son of his father’s executive secretary, William Dobbyn.

“The watch itself was completely restored after being returned to Mr Astor’s family and worn by his son, making it a unique part of the Titanic story and one of the most important pieces of horological history relating to the most famous ship in the world,” said Aldridge.&nbsp;

The second item up for auction would be Wallace Hartley’s bag. He was known for being a part of the famous eight-piece band which kept playing as the ship sank to keep the passengers calm as the disaster unfolded around them.

The watch, once owned by businessman John Jacob Astor who died&nbsp;with the ship in 1912 at 47, was acquired by a private collector in the US at Henry Aldridge &amp; Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, during an auction on Saturday.

This breaks the previous record of £1.1 million&nbsp;paid for a violin played during the Titanic's sinking, also sold by the same auction house in 2013.

A representative for the auction house mentioned that the £1.2 million ($1.46&nbsp;million)&nbsp;price tag for the pocket watch covered all fees and taxes borne by the purchaser.

Similarly, the case for the violin was also sold at the same auction for £360,000, inclusive of fees and taxes.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge expressed to the PA news agency that the prices achieved for the Titanic memorabilia during the sale were&nbsp;“absolutely incredible”.

He said: “They reflect not only the importance of the artefacts themselves and their rarity but they also show the enduring appeal and fascination with the Titanic story.

“112 years later, we are still talking about the ship and the passengers and the crew. The thing with the Titanic story, it’s effectively a large ship hits an iceberg with a tragic loss of life, but more importantly is 2,200 stories," he added.&nbsp;

Rather than trying to get on another lifeboat, John Jacob Astor, who was from a wealthy family, was last seen chatting and smoking. A week later, his body was found in the ocean, along with his fancy gold pocket watch.

Aldridge said: “Astor is well known as the richest passenger [on] board the RMS Titanic and was thought to be among the richest people in the world at that time, with a net worth of roughly $87m – equivalent to several billion dollars today.

“At 11.40pm on 14 April 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg and started to take on water," he said.

“At first, Astor did not believe the ship was in any serious danger, but later it was apparent she was sinking and the captain had started an evacuation after midnight, so he helped his wife into lifeboat 4,” he added.&nbsp;

Madeleine Astor lived through the disaster, and her husband's body was found close to where the Titanic sank on April 22nd.

"It's right at that period, that transitional period when papyrus scroll starts turning into codex form," said Eugenio Donadoni, Christie's Senior Specialist, Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts. "So, books as we know them today. And what we have in this book is the earliest known texts of two books of the Bible."

The 104 pages (52 leaves) are protected beneath plexiglass and were penned over the course of 40 years at an upper Egyptian monastery by a single scribe. The Book of Jonah and the first Epistle of Peter are included in the codex.

Donadoni noted that only a small number of books from the third and fourth centuries&nbsp;have survived to the present day, attributing their preservation to Egypt's arid climate.

"All the major finds of Christian manuscripts that we had in the 20th century and at the end of the 19th century are all concentrated in Egypt for those very precise climactic conditions," he said.

Notably, the codex was discovered in Egypt in the 1950s and acquired by the University of Mississippi, where it remained until 1981.&nbsp;

Norwegian manuscript collector Dr Martin Schoyen acquired it in 1988 and is now auctioning it off with some other highlights of his Shoyen Collection, one of the largest private manuscript collections in the world.

The codex is on display at Christie's New York from April 2 through April 9 and will be auctioned in London on June 11.

Another major literary treasure up for sale at the auction is Conan Doyle’s letters recounting his dinner with Oscar Wilde. In 1889, the two contemporaries sat down for a dinner at the Langham Hotel in London and everything changed.

It is said that soon after this meeting, Wilde went on to write his philosophical novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Conan Doyle agreed to write The Sign of Four.&nbsp;

The auction will be held in New York on June 26 as a live sale.&nbsp;

<h2>That one ‘golden evening’ of 1889</h2>

On 30 August 1889, Joseph Marshall Stoddart, the managing editor of the American publication Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine met two of the greatest writers of the 1890s, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde. The two were invited over a dinner at Langham Hotel in London.

Stoddart was eager to produce the English version of Lippincott’s with a British editor and British contributors. It was this fateful dinner meeting that led to the release of two of the greatest stories by Wilde and Conan Doyle.&nbsp;

In his 1924 autobiography, Memories and Adventures, Conan Doyle called the dinner meeting with Stoddart a “golden evening”, as Stoddart showed interest in commissioning his second novel.&nbsp;

Soon, the novel The Sign of Four made its first appearance in the February 1890 edition of Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine. This was the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes after the first novel The Study in Scarlet.&nbsp;

The manuscript up for sale is in an immaculate state, with only a few edits by Stoddart to Americanise the spellings and some tweaks here and there by Conan Doyle, told Selby Kiffer to CNN. Kifer is the auction house’s international senior specialist for books and manuscripts.

Almost all of Conan Doyle’s surviving manuscripts are residing in museums with similar little edits.

The manuscript is just one fraction of a collection that was assembled by Dr. Rodney P. Swantko, a Chicago-based collector, who died two years ago.

Other lots include four novels by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of which is a copy of “The Great Gatsby” he signed from Scott and Zelda, on behalf of his wife, which is expected to fetch up to $250,000.

In an auction titled "Icons: Playboy, Hugh Hefner, and Marilyn Monroe," Julien's Auctions sold various items from both Monroe and Hefner.

The marker on Monroe's grave, which had to be replaced due to damage, sold for $88,900 at the auction.

Other notable items from the auction include a pink silk Pucci dress owned by Monroe, which sold for $325,000, and an Elizabeth Arden lipstick used by Monroe, which fetched $65,000, reported BBC.

As per reports, Hefner's clothes, including his burgundy smoking jacket, slippers, pyjamas, and tobacco pipe, sold for a total of $13,000. A selection of contemporary artwork from the Playboy headquarters also sold for $127,000.

Monroe, who died at 36 in 1962, is best known for her roles in films like Some Like It Hot (1959), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953).

In a statement, David Goodman, chief executive of Julien's Auctions, said,&nbsp;"Throughout our 20 years in the business, Julien's has proudly represented the legacies of Hollywood's biggest stars yet there is no one bigger and more enduring than Marilyn Monroe."

<h2>Controversy surrounding Marilyn Monroe's grave</h2>

There's one very disturbing story surrounding the resting place of Monroe.

The stunning star known as one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s continues to be fetishised after her death.

She is buried at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. As per reports, buried in the crypt directly above Monroe's is a businessman buried face down so he could reportedly "lie on top of her". The businessman Richard Poncher told his wife Elsie to bury him in that position. Talking to LA Times, Elsie had revealed, "He said, 'If I croak, if you don't put me upside down over Marilyn, I'll haunt you the rest of my life'."
