Assembly Polls 2024: BJP storms back to power in Arunachal Pradesh, secures 46 out of 60 seats

<p>The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit of the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday (May 7) expelled its 28 members for contesting elections in their respective Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies against the party's official candidates.</p>

<p>The individuals have been removed from the party for a period of six years.</p>

<p>The saffron party released an official statement saying that the members took a decision contrary to the directives issued by the BJP during the Parliamentary and Assembly polls of 2024.</p>

<p>The disciplinary action against the individuals was taken following the recommendations of the State Disciplinary Action Committee.</p>

<p>“The following list of persons have contested election in their respective Assembly &amp; Parliamentary constituencies against the official party candidates in the simultaneous Parliamentary &amp; Assembly Election 2024. Consequent upon the recommendation of the State Disciplinary Action Committee, under the Chairmanship of Shri Tarh Tarak; the Party hereby expels them for a period of Six (6) Years…with immediate effect,” the expulsion order read.</p>

<p>This comes after China renamed 30 places along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It released the fourth such list of geographical names.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rijiju further noted that China has given "some kind of names to some places" in Arunachal Pradesh. He added, "I don't understand why they are doing that. We are very upset and we totally reject this kind of malicious activities conducted by the Chinese government."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further added, "Our government from the External Affairs Ministry has responded very appropriately. But, what I feel is China is very nervous because earlier these border areas were totally left underdeveloped during Congress time and during Modiji's time, all major highways, roads, bridges, all 4G networks, water supply, electricity, all basic amenities are being provided in the border areas, especially in Arunachal Pradesh which was neglected for so long."&nbsp;</p>

India has rejected an outright attempt by China to rename around 30 locations in its Northeastern State of Arunachal Pradesh. Over the years China has made several claims on Arunachal Pradesh calling it Zangnan and a part of South Tibet. India has always dismissed these claims by China.

<p>India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (Apr 1) took a dig at China over its claims on Arunachal Pradesh stating that changing names would not have any impact on the fact that the northeastern state is, was and will always be a part of India.</p>

<p>"If today I change the name of your house, will it become mine? Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be a state of India. Changing names does not have an effect," Jaishankar said while addressing a press conference in Gujarat.</p>

<p>"Our army is deployed at the Line of Actual Control...," added EAM.</p>

<p>Jaishankar's remarks came following China's claim where it dubbed the Indian State as Zangan and called it an "inherent part of China's territory".</p>

<p>"Zangnan has been China's territory since ancient times. This is an undeniable fact,"&nbsp;said Senior Colonel Wu Qian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defence.</p>

<p>The Chinese Defence Ministry released a statement saying that Beijing "never acknowledges and firmly opposes" the "so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India."</p>

<p>After this, India rebuffed Beijing's "baseless arguments" and "absurd claims" and asserted that the northeastern state was an "integral and inalienable part of India."</p>

<h2><strong>US opposes China's claims on Arunachal Pradesh</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier, the United States had condemned China over its claims on the northeastern state and said that it "strongly opposes" any attempts made by Beijing to advance territorial claims across the Line of Actual Control.</p>

<p>“The United States recognises Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory and we strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by incursions or encroachments, military or civilian, across the Line of Actual Control,” said State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel.</p>

<p>The Ministry of External Affairs in an official statement also noted that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will “continue to benefit” from India’s development programmes and infrastructure projects.</p>

<p>“We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh. Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity,” said the official spokesperson of MEA, Randhir Jaiswal.</p>

<p>Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged victorious in 10 Arunachal Pradesh assembly seats even before voting in the upcoming polls. This comes as the party faced no rivals on five of these seats while nominations were withdrawn on the remaining five seats.&nbsp;This is seen as a major stride for the party in the region but this is not something new as the state has a history of uncontested electoral triumphs.</p>

<p>With the polling scheduled for April 19 in the Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections, the BJP was fielding candidates in all 60 Assembly constituencies, with 10 of them now having already won.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Congress fielded 34 candidates, National People’s Party (NPP) 29, while NCP and the Peoples’ Party of Arunachal (PPA) have nominated 17 and two candidates respectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In response to a query during a weekly media briefing on Thursday, Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "Our position on the matter has been made very clear on Arunachal Pradesh time and again. We have recently also issued statements in this regard. I think a couple of statements."</p>

<p>"China may repeat its baseless claims as many times as they want. That is not going to change the position. Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India," he added.</p>

<p>“We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh."</p>

<p>“Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity. Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programmes and infrastructure projects,” the MEA said in a statement.</p>

<p>The Chinese foreign ministry had earlier objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh.</p>

<p>“We reject the comments made by the Chinese side regarding the visit of the Prime Minister to Arunachal Pradesh. Indian leaders visit Arunachal Pradesh from time to time, as they visit other States of India,” the MEA said in a separate response last week.</p>

<p>Jaishankar during his three-day visit to Singapore also highlighted that Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism almost at an "industry level".</p>

<p>He further asserted that India will not overlook terrorists and "will not skirt this problem anymore".</p>

<p>"Every country wants a stable neighbourhood...if nothing else, you want at least a quiet neighbourhood," he said in response to a question on India's ties with Pakistan.</p>

<p>He laid emphasis on the fact that how Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism against India and was using it as "an instrument of statecraft".</p>

<p>"It's not a one-off happening...but very sustained, almost at an industry level...So what we have come to conclude is that we have to find a way of addressing (the menace), that dodging the problem gets us nowhere, it only invites more trouble," he said.</p>

<p>"I don't have a quick instantaneous fix (to this issue). But what I can tell you is that India will not skirt this problem anymore. We are not going to say, 'well, that happened and let's continue our dialogue'...we have a problem and we must be honest enough to face up to that problem, however difficult it is...we should not give the other country a free pass, saying there's nothing they can do about it or it's a very hard problem, or there's so much else at stake that let us overlook," he asserted.</p>

<p>The ministry further reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a senior Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) official was quoted by AFP as saying Friday that they had been issued visas for the Hangzhou Asian Games, denying they were barred.</p>

<p>"These India athletes already got a visa to enter China. China didn't refuse any visa," OCA honorary life vice president Wei Jizhong, who is from China, told a press briefing in Hangzhou.</p>

<h2><strong>Chinese foreign ministry also reacted to the developments</strong></h2>

<p>Asked about the trio at a regular foreign ministry briefing in Beijing, spokeswoman Mao Ning said: "China welcomes athletes from all countries with legal documents to come to Hangzhou and take part in the Asian Games.”</p>

<p>State-run Global Times said in a post on social media that the "2023 edition of China's standard map was officially released on Monday and launched on the website of the standard map service hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The post claimed that the map has been compiled based on the drawing method of the national boundaries of China and various countries in the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But it doesn't seem to consider the boundaries of all the countries as it wrongly depicts Indian territories. New Delhi has repeatedly said that the state of Arunachal Pradesh has "always been" and will "always be" an integral part of the country.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Will it impact Xi's presence at G20 Summit?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Christopher Sharman, a US-based Indo-Pacific Security Strategist, told WION that China "periodically issues these maps illustrating PRC claims. Previous iterations of this map also illustrated China's claim over the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. These maps continue to be a source of irritation with neighbours such as India, as well as the other claimants of features and islands in the South China Sea".&nbsp;</p>

<p>When he was asked about Xi's G20 participation in India, and should India remain quiet?&nbsp;Sharman said, "The upcoming G-20 meetings may be an opportunity for PM Modi to address China’s recent publication of its map with Xi if he attends, but even engagement at the highest level is unlikely to prompt the PRC to adjust or to modify its territorial claims. Beijing, after all, prefers to address such issues bilaterally."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"However, the G-20 may be an opportunity for a multilateral approach by other members of the G20, such as Japan, which is also impacted by Chinese claims on this map. Multilateral opposition presents a greater challenge to Beijing," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The provocative imperialist map was released just a few days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg and called for de-escalation of tensions at the Indo-China border. But such moves can put a strain on India-China ties, which need urgent mending in order to maintain a peaceful world order.</p>

<p>WION reached out to Ray Powell, a SeaLight director at Stanford University's Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation, to understand more about the matter. "Certainly it's an aggression, and very much in character for Beijing, which often uses maps to lay down a marker and act as a predicate for more aggressive action later," Ray said.</p>

<p>The map appears to substantiate China's unproven claims over the island of Taiwan and the nine-dash line, claiming a large part of the South China Sea. Both the nations, China and Taiwan, assert claim over nearly all of the sea, while Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei each have overlapping stakes in parts of it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In case China invades Taiwan, experts have said that it would have a massive impact on the global supply chains as the island is a major supplier of semiconductors—a key component of nearly all modern electronics.&nbsp;</p>
