U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to visit quake-hit Turkey

<p>Amid the ongoing balloon controversy, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held rare talks with China's top diplomat Wang Yi on Saturday during which he warned Beijing that the "irresponsible act" of flying a spy balloon into America's airspace must not be repeated.&nbsp; The two leaders' highly anticipated meeting took place on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference as tensions continue to grow between Beijing and Washington. US security officials have been in a state of alarm after they spotted a huge white balloon, which allegedly belonged to China, flying over various secretive nuclear weapons sites of the country after which it was shot down on February 4.</p>

<p>The balloon controversy led to Blinken abruptly cancelling his scheduled trip to China. Beijing has denied having any spy balloons and has continued to claim that the one that strayed into US airspace was just for weather research.</p>

<p>Blinken was "very direct and candid" during the meeting which continued for an hour, a senior State Department official said. Wang, during the meeting, informed Blinken that the relations between the two countries have suffered serious damages due to the way&nbsp;in which Washington reacted to the balloon.</p>

The Lukashenka regime's politically motivated trial in absentia of democratic opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya is illustrative of its repression. We've taken steps to impose visa restrictions on 25 regime officials who passed legislation to repress pro-democracy actors. — Secretary Antony Blinken (@SecBlinken) January 17, 2023 × Additionally, among the 25 people targeted by Washington are lawmakers and members of the National Assembly of Belarus who played a role in passing legislation to authorise the death penalty for people convicted of “attempted acts of terrorism,” a charge that Blinken says has been used to quash the opposition in Belarus. Furthermore, some of these individuals have also supported laws that revoke citizenship from those outside the country charged with “extremism” and confiscating property for taking “unfriendly actions towards Belarus,” said Blinken. Lukashenko has been in power since 1994 and declared himself the winner of the 2020 presidential election in Belarus which the long-time outspoken critic and leader of the opposition denounced. Tsikhanouskaya, who now lives in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, told Reuters on the sidelines of the ongoing World Economic Forum, “In Belarus there are no honest trials. We live in absolute lawlessness in our country so tomorrow's trial will be a farce and a show but not real justice.” According to the BelTa state news agency, Tsikhanouskaya and several others will be tried on charges of treason and attempting to seize power. The opposition leader of Belarus is on trial along with other pro-democracy leaders, including Volha Kavalkova, head of the Coordination Council, who was in charge of Belarus’ democratic transition, said the US official. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday that the ultimate responsibility for the missile attack on Poland lies with Russia. The missile attack, which killed two people, was believed to be caused by Ukrainian air defence missiles but Blinken said that the ongoing invasion in Ukraine is to be blamed for the incident. He also added that the US is currently assisting Ukraine with the ongoing investigation. "Whatever its final conclusion, we already know the party ultimately responsible for this tragic incident – Russia," Blinken said at the Asia-Pacific summit in Bangkok, reported Reuters. In the aftermath of the incident, US President Joe Biden said that Russia was not responsible for the missile attack in Poland. Blinken made it clear that the investigation has "seen nothing so far that contradicts" the observation and the working theory remains that it occurred due to the Ukrainian air defence missiles. Antony Blinken to visit China next year to follow up on Biden-Xi discussions: White House

<p>US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday, at the end of the two-day meeting of foreign ministers of the world's seven wealthiest democracies or&nbsp;G7, said the group is clear-eyed about its approach in dealing with China.&nbsp; The meeting took place in the western German town of Muenster and the main talking point remained China's aggressive global posturing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In our discussions here, we're also clear eyed about the need to align our approach to the PRC (People's Republic of China) in the face of growing coercion, and push back together against Beijing's market-distorting policies and practices, which hurt workers and industries in all of our countries," said Blinken while talking to reporters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While Blinken talked about a clear-eyed approach, the grouping stopped short of making a reference to a common goal.</p>

<p>However, experts believe that the optics of G7 and Blinken's statement were&nbsp;somewhat diluted as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was visiting China on a one-day trip to meet Xi Jinping. This was the first trip from a G7 leader to China after the 20th CPC Congress where Xi secured a third term for himself as the party general secretary.&nbsp;</p>
