<p>Several years ago, when I read out an entry from Anne Frank's diary to my 10th grade class at a Delhi school, I did not fully understand the meaning of being 'good at heart', despite my English literature teacher's usually extra-ordinary explanation.</p>

<p>As the years passed, and journalism gave me the chance to contextualise Anne Frank's observations, it&nbsp;allowed me to question Anne's principles of humanism amid the second World War.</p>

Ask a Palestinian at a refugee camp somewhere in Gaza or the protesting <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/kenya-protesters-breach-parliament-barricade-enter-compound-police-fire-live-bullets-735010">Kenyans</a> who have just vandalised part of their parliament in Nairobi as I write this piece&nbsp;— is the world an ideal or fair place?</p>

<p>But shouldn't there be a sincere effort, or a constant state of striving towards the ideal? Isn't it the crux of what our representatives at the United Nations call "rules-based international order" — &nbsp;striving towards the ideal? &nbsp;</p>

<p>Perhaps, Anne Frank implicitly believed in the perpetual state of the world striving to reach an ideal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She further added in that entry: "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."</p>

Yes Anne Frank, 'people are really good at heart' — even in this turbulent world

<p>In what comes as a bizarre decision, a Texas school district has pulled Anne Frank's diary (Illustrated version), Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye and the Bible and several other books from the school bookshelves.</p>

<p>Reportedly, of the total 41 books to have been removed, several pertain to LBGT as well as black characters. The decision to remove the books was passed by Jennifer Price, Keller Independent School District curriculum director who sent a mail to principals and directed them to do the needful.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“By the end of today, I need all books pulled from the library and classrooms. More information will be sent regarding action for these books. Once this has been completed, please email me a confirmation. We need to ensure this action is taken by the end of today.” read the email sent by Price.</p>

<p>An image of children huddled inside a bunker stared at me this morning. All around ten years, approximately my age, hiding in Ukraine to save from their enemy, Russia. Why are Russia and Ukraine enemies? I asked and googled. I gathered, Russia claims a part of Ukraine as theirs and wants the country to surrender. But, if they believe that a part of the country belongs to them then why are they bombing themselves?</p>

<p>The children in the image wore Covid-19 masks, sadness visible in their eyes. Evident, that they were separated from their families. When would they get together again? Would everyone be alive? Their houses would remain? The children looked pale and scared. I felt, they were waiting to be free and hug their loved ones.</p>

<p>Did I see in their eyes, the fear of getting orphaned? I remember reading Oliver Twist, an orphan who was ill-treated and abused, living in constant fear of doing something unapproved and getting beaten up. Oliver had escaped. Would there be an Oliver in these children?&nbsp;</p>

How long would it take for them to get back to school – I wondered sitting inside my classroom that had just opened after the long COVID situation. Would their schools still be there? Or would they be destroyed! I pray for them, hoping they’d return to their comfort and safety soon.</p>

<p>I spoke to my parents about wars. They are as clueless as I am.</p>

<p>The other day I saw a clip of people fleeing from Afghanistan. They climbed on either side of the airplane and even on top, legs dangling out of the door, desperate to run from their own country, to be able to live a life of their choice. How would they resettle, where would they find dignity,are amongmany unanswered questions of mine. I started reading about wars. I wish I didn’t. War is all about blood and death, disability and trauma. The India-Pakistan disputes have led to many wars in the past. We were once the same country, now separated. The relationships between countries are not as simple as mine with my best friend. We disagree and eventually one of us lets go. We choose to be friends because that makes us happy. Why don’t countries want to be happy?</p>

<p>People kill each other in a war. Many soldiers return disabled, some never return.</p>

<p>But still, wars happen.Countries become enemies.Two beautiful geographies that can offer tourism to each other, where people come to learn and experience art, choose the path of destruction instead.&nbsp;</p>

'The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank' introduced me to the fears and loneliness of a thirteen-year-old during World War II when the Germans were killing the Jews. The Franks were hiding in a secret annex above the father’s office, sharing space with another family, cut off from the world outside.After two years of hiding, they were betrayed and the family was arrested. Anne Frank’s diary ended abruptly; so did her life. The children in the bunker reminds me of Anne Frank. I feel uncomfortable.</p>

<p>Another book,' Wonder' by R. J. Palacio briefly touches upon a grandmother’s childhood when Germans came to France and Jews were fleeing. A young boy with deformed legs sarcastically called Tourteau, helped her to escape when Jew children – crying, pleading, frightened – were being taken hostage. She kept in hiding for two years and never saw her mother again. For how long would the children in Ukraine have to stay inside the bunker?&nbsp;<br />

John Boyne’s 'The Boy in Striped Pyjamas' showed the life of the prisoners living in severe conditions – under-fed, overworked and subjected to extreme cruelty. This book, I don’t want to think about.</p>

<p>In my school, we don’t talk about the war. I hear about it at home. On my mother’s WhatsApp, I find people sending jokes and memes about war. They must not have read these books or seen the images. I heard from my father about the news correspondents reporting from the war front, going out and taking cover at regular intervals, telling the world what is happening there. I hope and I pray that their work ends at the earliest. I also wait for them to declare that the bunker is empty now and the children have been sent back home.</p>

The director seems to bide his time till their dramatic reunion, when Hannah learns that Anne is dying on the other side of a camp wall.</p>

<p>Clinging to Hannah’s naive viewpoint and the cherished ideal of her friendship with Anne results in some hard truths being hidden away or oddly sanitized. Physical violence tends to get staged in the background of shots, for example (even when Hannah’s pregnant mother is brutalized at home). The credits underline the tin ear of the whole endeavor by declaring that Anne “became what she wanted: world-famous.”</p>

<p>In the diary, she listed many of the restrictions placed upon the lives of the Dutch Jewish population. She also wrote about her wish to publish a book about her time in the 'Secret Annex'. After the war, her father Otto Frank fulfilled her wish.</p>

<p>Since then, Anne Frank's diary has been translated into more than 70 languages, becoming one of the most haunting accounts of the Holocaust, selling some 30 million copies.</p>

<p>A team that included retired US FBI agent Vincent Pankoke and around 20 historians, criminologists and data specialists led an investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The probe revealed that a Jewish figure named Arnold van den Bergh might have revealed the Franks' hiding place in Amsterdam to the Nazis in a bid to save his own family. &nbsp;</p>

<p>However, some other experts emphasised that the evidence against him was not conclusive.</p>

<p>According to a new book about the investigation, the evidence comes from modern data-crunching techniques combined with a long-lost, anonymous note sent to Anne's father Otto naming Van den Bergh.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Anne Frank House museum said it was "impressed" by the evidence in the book being published on Tuesday by Canadian author Rosemary Sullivan, but that further investigation was needed.</p>

<p>Anne's father told detectives in 1964 that he had received a note shortly after the war naming Van den Bergh as the betrayer of his family, and of several other people. A copy made by Frank of the note was found by the team in a police officer's archives.</p>

<p>Now Dutch researchers have revealed the answer: corny jokes and a summary of her ideas about sexual education when she was aged just 13.</p>

<p>"Anybody who reads the passages that have now been discovered will be unable to suppress a smile," said Frank van Vree, director of the Netherlands` Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies.</p>

<p>He said the jokes "make it clear that Anne, with all her gifts, was above all also an ordinary girl."</p>

<p>Frank and her family hid in a cramped secret annex above a canal-side warehouse from July 1942 to August 1944, along with four other Jews. They were betrayed and arrested by the Nazis in August 1944.</p>

<p>The pages, dated to Sept. 28, 1942, were contained in the red-and-white checkered diary Anne had received for her birthday in June of that year, shortly before they went into hiding.</p>

<p>One joke involves a man who fears his wife is cheating on him. After searching the house, he finds a naked man in the closet.</p>

<p>When the husband asks the naked man what he`s doing there, Anne wrote, the naked man answers: "Believe it or not, I`m waiting for the tram."</p>

<p>The Anne Frank House photographed the pages with a high- resolution camera and a light shining on them during a regular check on the diary`s condition in 2016. Later, researchers realized the underlying text was partly visible and modern software could probably decipher it.</p>

<p>Anne Frank House director Ronald Leopold said the pages were not really scandalous or surprising, as Frank openly discusses her sexual maturation elsewhere in the diary.&nbsp;"The only element that might be interesting from the point of view about her development as a writer and as a teenager is the fact that she`s creating, kind of, fiction," he said.</p>

<p>In addition to the jokes, Anne summarizes what a period is, describes the mechanics of sex in couched terms, and relays what she has heard of prostitution. "I sometimes imagine that someone would come to me and ask me to inform him about sexual subjects, how would I do that?" she wrote. "Here`s the answer..."</p>
