Google has announced that Android users in Ukraine will now get air raid alerts on their phones before attacks by Russian forces.

In a blog post on Thursday, the tech giant said it’s working with the Ukrainian government to roll out an air raid alert system for Android phones in the country.&nbsp;

“Tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on airstrike alerts to try to get to safety. At the request, and with the help, of the government of Ukraine, we’ve started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine,” the company said.

The air raid alert would be adapted from a system built for quickly sending warnings about earthquakes.

“The system leverages our low latency alert mechanism we built for earthquake alerts. The air raid system is supplemental to, and shares the same triggers used for, the country's existing air raid alert systems,” Dave Burke, vice president of engineering for Android, said in a tweet.

He said that the system, called Ukrainian Alarm, will start rolling out on March 11 and will ramp up to target all Android phones in Ukraine over the next few days.

Google has already been highlighting the app on the Google Play Store before the announcement.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, Google scaled back its presence in Russia, including pausing all ad sales and removing Russian state-funded media apps from Google Play in Europe.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine is both a tragedy and a humanitarian disaster in the making,” Google wrote on March 1st.

The company said it was working to “support people in Ukraine through our products, defend against cybersecurity threats, surface high-quality, reliable information and ensure the safety and security of our colleagues and their families in the region.”

“If there is some real capability then we will be very much interested in developing that area because that will create an alternative to&nbsp;iOS&nbsp;and&nbsp;Android&nbsp;which then an Indian brand can grow," Chandrasekhar said.

In the last few years, Android and iOS have ruled the mobile OS market. According to Statcounter, a web traffic analysis website, Android OS rules the roost with 70 per cent market share, while iOS is at a distant second with 29.24 per cent.

Microsoft tried to break the duopoly and had even acquired Nokia to push out Windows phones, but it failed miserably.

Mozilla's Firefox OS was discontinued after efforts to crack India's mobile market with low-cost devices failed. The Linux Foundation's Tizen also didn’t find any takers.

China's government has promoted Linux-derived Kylin OS for locals, but it has not won much market share.

While Russia’s Astra Linux is only limited to the nation’s military.

The Galaxy Watch 4 comes with a classic round dial and looks like a fitness tracker more than a watch and that's not a complaint. I know people who have a problem with smartwatches being too "bulky", too "skinny" or too "small" to see their workout performance. The Watch 4 is none of that. You get a physical bezel that is surprisingly sturdy, two side buttons, and an overall durable yet chic-looking smartwatch.

I will say that I am not a fan of the sporty yet slightly uncomfortable strap when it comes to aesthetics but I do think it's the perfect rudimentary strap for sweaty workouts

I've always been a fan of uncluttered spaces and a clean screen is what I love on my phone, tablet and now even on my smartwatch. The 40mm real estate is quite enough especially with its crystal-clear display. You can set up a watch face with all your notifications stacked up but that may guzzle down the battery faster.

SOFTWARE: IS IT THE "REAL TEAM PLAYER"?

Samsung has labelled the operating system on the Galaxy Watch 4 "a real team player" and that's because it is the first smartwatch with Wear OS powered by Samsung. This means that the power of Google and Samsung comes together to make the user interface cleaner, neater, more intuitive. And it performs well.

Pair the smartwatch with the Galaxy Wearable app and apps play seamlessly from music, health to fitness. Samsung has been clever here. The Tizen OS hangover persists and Samsung Wearable loyalists will jump at it. And now with Wear OS, a new market of smartwatch users will lean towards the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4.

You can customise the UI how you see fit and pick from several watch faces from analogue to digital. And if you're someone who looks at your wrist more than at your phone, you don't have to worry about missing out on an important notification.

WILL THIS WATCH GET YOU MOVING?

We come back to my original question, are you buying a watch to make you fit or because you're already a fitness enthusiast? Because no piece of technology can make you fit alone. Having said that, the Galaxy Watch 4 has a lot to offer. You can pick from swimming, biking, running, golf, hiking to a lot more.&nbsp;

A feature worth mentioning is the new&nbsp;Samsung BioActive Sensor which captures your body composition in real-time to help you manage your health goals. Like all health metrics, take this with a pinch of salt. Treat this as a roadmap for your fitness goals.

There are of course all those metrics and sensors for sleep tracking, heart rate tracking, and even SPO2 tracking which has now become a new favorite during the pandemic.&nbsp;

Another headline-maker was the ECG feature made famous by the Apple Watch that Samsung will bring to India soon hopefully. However, let me be frank, I doubt anyone relies on a smartwatch for their ECG readings. I will say that it's a good way to keep track of your heart health.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: King of android smartwatches?

Google has always been at the forefront in introducing novel features to its operating system with every new version of Android.

In order to make the Android operating system’s user interface (UI) more user friendly and accessible, the American tech giant has reportedly been working on a new feature on Android 12 which lets users control their phones using facial expressions.

According to reports, the Camera Switches feature, which is one of the accessibility services in the Android Accessibility Suite app, will support gesture controls on the UI.

For example, the app tracks when a user will open their mouth and then map that to open the notifications panel. Alternatively, users can raise their eyebrows to return to their homescreen.

Among the probable face gestures that Google is incorporating into the app include smiling, opening the mouth, and looking out right, left or down.

Yu said the company shipped 240 million smartphones last year, which gave it a second-place market ranking in 2019, but added that software shortages had hurt sales in recent months and shipments fell to 105 million units in the first-half.

Huawei is the number-two smartphone producer in the world after Samsung, but tech market analysis firm Canalys said Huawei surpassed the South Korean company in the virus-affected second quarter.

A new bug has been discovered on Android phones. Setting a certain image as your phone’s wallpaper could cause it to keep crashing and freezing.

The bug went viral on social media over the weekend, The Verge reported. The image was shared by “Ice Universe” on Twitter, and since then, people have been testing the veracity of this claim on their phones. Turns out, it actually causes phones to crash, especially if you’re using a Samsung device.

Kaspersky recently discovered two new Android malware modifications that are capable of stealing cookies that are stored by the internet browser and social media applications. Consequentially, the attacker can then control the victim's social media accounts without the user ever finding out.

The hackers, once they have the requisite information, can use the unique session ID which is generated by cookies to bypass the need to login into a portal.

If the user ID is compromised, attackers can easily assume the identity of the user and trick websites and applications. Through this, they can take control of the accounts. This is the model that allows sensitive information to be shared by hackers. The two new Trojans responsible for this can then leak any information.

The make-up of one of the Trojans allows it to acquire ''root rights'' which essentially allows the cookies to be transferred from Facebook or any other social media website to the servers of the hackers.

However, it's not that simple to gain control of someone's account, for some websites have measures in place that disallow suspicious log-in attempts.

This can be bypassed through the second Trojan, which runs as an app on the victim's device and circumvents security measures to gain access to personal data without the user finding out. In essence, the attacker then assumes the identity of the user and then may be able to use the personal accounts of people to post whatever they please.

There's no clarity on why attackers want access to the social media accounts of random users. However, as reported by TechRadar, these accounts may be used to launch spam and phishing attacks across social media.

Igor Golovin, a malware analyst at Kaspersky, suggested that this threat is expected to grow.

“By combining two attacks, the cookie thieves discovered a way to gain control over their victims’ accounts without arousing suspicions. While this is a relatively new threat, so far, only about 1000 individuals have been targeted, that number is growing and will most likely continue to do so, particularly since it’s so hard for websites to detect. Even though we typically don’t pay attention to cookies when we’re surfing the web, they’re still another means of processing our personal information, and anytime data about us is collected online, we need to pay attention”, Golovin said.

The study was published in the medical journal 'Neurology: Clinical practice'. Researchers studied 400 people in India with headaches which included migraines, tension headaches and others.

They were questioned on their smartphone use, headache history as well as medication use. The study cites associations which suggest that smartphones may be a potential trigger for worsening headaches.

The study found that 96 per cent of smartphone users were more likely to take medication compared to 81 per cent of non-smartphone users.

In the study, smartphone users also reported a higher occurrence of "aura", which is a warning sensation before epilepsy or migraine attack.&nbsp;

This was in comparison to non-smartphone users. Medical experts believe that excessive smartphone screen time hampers your posture.

The act of bending your neck to look at your phone, dubbed as "text neck", maybe a strain on one's spine.

While this new research doesn't make any conclusive claims, it adds to the existing knowledge which warns against increased smartphone usage

India's antitrust watchdog has ordered an investigation into <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/google-launches-israel-programme-to-help-startups-grow-globally-216732">Alphabet Inc's unit Google</a> for allegedly abusing the dominant position of its popular Android mobile operating system to block rivals, two sources aware of the matter told Reuters.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) last year started looking into the complaint, which is similar to one Google faced in Europe that resulted in a&nbsp;$5 billion&nbsp;fine on the company, Reuters reported in February.

In mid-April, the CCI decided there was merit in the accusations made in the complaint and ordered its investigation unit to launch a full probe, one of the sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

That decision, which was confirmed by the second source, has not been previously reported and the order calling the full investigation was not made public.

"It is a strong case for the CCI, given the EU precedent," said the first source. "The CCI has (preliminarily) found Google abused its dominant position."

The probe would be completed in about a year and Google executives would likely be summoned to appear before the CCI in coming months, the source said.

The CCI did not respond to a request for comment.

A Google spokesman said Android has enabled millions of Indians to connect to the internet by making mobile devices more affordable. Google looked forward to working with the CCI "to demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less", the spokesman said in a statement.&nbsp;

Reuters could not establish who filed the complaint, which involves more than one person.

Unfair advantage

The precise details of the complaint against Google in India could not be determined, but sources have told Reuters it is on the exact same lines as the case filed against the company in Europe.

In the EU case, regulators said Google forced manufacturers to pre-install Google Search and its Chrome browser, together with its Google Play app store, on Android devices, giving it an unfair advantage.

Google has appealed the order but, in a bid to quell EU antitrust concerns, last month said its Android device users in Europe would be able to choose rival browsers and search engines. Once a user downloads a rival search app, it also prompts them to change their default search engine in their Google Chrome browser, if they so wish.

Android, used by device makers for free, features on about 88 per cent of the world's smartphones. In India, about 99 per cent of the smartphones sold this year used the platform, Counterpoint Research estimates.

It remains possible that the CCI's investigations unit could clear Google of any wrongdoing. The amount of fine that can be imposed on Google if the CCI rules against it was not immediately clear.

The&nbsp;regulator has powers to impose a penalty of up to 10% of the relevant turnover of a company in the last three financial years if it is found to have abused its dominant position. In that case, Google's earnings linked to its web browser and the search engine could be considered to assess the fine, New Delhi-based antitrust lawyer Gautam Shahi said.

Google does not disclose its India earnings from its web browser or search engine.

Video sharing platform, Vine, and popular HQ trivia app co-founder Colin Kroll on Monday found dead in his apartment in New York.

According to reports, Kroll was found by police after his girlfriend called 911 and asked for a wellness check.

Following the call, the New York Police department went on to Kroll's flat in Manhattan to check on him and found his body along with drug paraphernalia.

Reports say that he died of a drug overdose.

Google to charge Android partners up to $40 per device for apps

International Data Corporation forecast&nbsp;Wednesday&nbsp;that global smartphone sales would cool this year before heating up with help from new 5G networks and India's vibrant market.

An IDC Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker expected smartphone sales to slip two-tenths of a&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;this year to total 1.462 billion in a second straight year of slight decline.

But IDC predicted that the smartphone market would reignite next year, growing about 3&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;annually to 1.654 billion in the year 2022.

The "biggest driver" of the downturn last year was said by IDC to be the China market, which&nbsp;is&nbsp;expected to be down 7.1&nbsp;percent&nbsp;this year after shrinking 4.9&nbsp;percent&nbsp;last year.

IDC forecast that the smartphone market in China would flatten out next year, while sales in India were expected to continue to boom on low-priced handsets sold by Chinese companies.

"China remains the focal point for many given that it consumes roughly 30&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of the world's smartphones," IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device&nbsp;Tacker&nbsp;program vice president Ryan Reith said in a release.

"But, plenty of pockets of growth can be found beyond China."

A "catalyst to watch" will be&nbsp;arrival&nbsp;next year of smartphones tailored for ultra-fast 5G telecommunications networks, according to IDC.

While smartphone shipments will ebb this year, the average selling price will rise more than 10&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;to $345 and remain on an upward trend, said IDC research manager Anthony Scarsella.

Google's annual developer conference kicked off on Tuesday in California starting with CEO Sundar Pichai apologising for the flawed designs of the burger and beer emoji on Android.&nbsp;

Pichai said: "Towards the end of last year it came to my attention that we had a major bug in one of our core products. It turns out, we got the cheese wrong in our burger emoji."

There was a huge debate over the burger emoji on social media last year which started with author Thomas Baakdel stating the wrong placement of the cheese on the burger.&nbsp;

The tweet went viral and Pichai responded with a good humour, tweeting that Google would "drop everything else we are doing and address on Monday."
