<p>A team of scientists led by Gufran Beig, Chair Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies, conducted a study that highlighted the importance of quickly changing climate in relation to air quality, in addition to local emissions.</p>

<p>The study, which was published in the Elsevier Journal, shows that, in contrast to previous decades, the air quality in Indian cities on the peninsula deteriorated during the winter of 2022–2023 while improving in the country's north.</p>

<p>Among the north Indian cities, Ghaziabad recorded the most noteworthy improvement with a drop of 33 per cent, followed by Rohtak (30 per cent) and Noida (28 per cent). Delhi exhibited an improvement of around 10 per cent.</p>

<p>However, with a 30 per cent increase in PM2.5 levels, Mumbai saw the worst degradation, followed by other Indian peninsula cities like Coimbatore (28 per cent), Bengaluru (20 per cent), Chennai (12 per cent), etc.</p>

<p>Several North Indian cities almost surpassed the five-year-long target set under the National Clean Air Programme in no time. What caused this had been a puzzle, said the researchers.</p>

<p>"The winter of 2022-23 coincided with the last phase of an unusual triple-dip La Niña event, the first in the 21st century. This phenomenon, influenced by climate change, impacted the large-scale wind pattern, playing a decisive role in preventing stagnation conditions in north Indian cities and thus improving air quality," said R H Kripalani, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and co-author of the report.</p>

<p>On the contrary, he said that it brought calmer conditions to Indian towns on the peninsula, hastened transboundary pollution, and dramatically worsened the quality of the air.</p>

<p>"The dominance of higher northerly winds at the transport level forced an influx, along with relatively slower winds near the surface, trapping pollutants in peninsular India and increasing PM2.5 concentration. Conversely, feeble western disturbances, unique wind patterns, and the absence of rain, clouds, and faster ventilation led to a significant improvement in air quality in the north," Kripalani said.</p>

<p>The scientists used the recently created cutting-edge NIAS-SAFAR air quality forecasting model, which blends a chemical transport model with a contemporary artificial intelligence algorithm created locally, to validate their theory.</p>

<p>"Our findings are vindicated as the air quality in the winter of 2023-24, when La Nina ended, returned to normal levels," Beig said.</p>

<p>"The findings of the current paper suggest that we need to wake up to the fact that extreme and unusual occurrences in air pollution phenomena are directly or indirectly manifestations of climate change," he said.</p>

<p>"Such revelations, in all probability, are set to increase by leaps and bounds unless we focus on a long-term strategy to reduce the menace of anthropogenic emissions directly at the source. That would be a win-win situation for both air quality and climate change," he said.</p>

<p>The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi has shown progressive improvement, reaching 346 at 4:00 pm. This is approximately 55 AQI points below the threshold for invoking GRAP Stage-III actions.</p>

<p>Forecasts indicate a likelihood of sustained improvement in AQI, with no further deterioration expected in the coming days.</p>

<p>The temperatures in Delhi have been gradually decreasing. Cold temperatures compounded with calm winds have been a contributing factor in the deteriorating air quality in the capital city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 6.5°C on December 11. This was a further drop from the 8.3 degrees Celsius which was recorded on Sunday (Dec 10). The temperature was 9.2°C on Saturday (Dec 9).&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per Met officials quoted by media reports, the wind speeds are expected to pick up on Thursday (Dec 14) to 20km/hour. This, according to the officials, will help in containing the deteriorating air quality.</p>

<p>According to the weather department, the temperature in New Delhi will start falling from Friday (Dec 8). The capital city's maximum temperature was 25.8 degrees Celsius, which was a notch above the normal temperature of the season, against 26.4 degrees on Wednesday. The day also remained foggy on Thursday in Delhi.<br />

The pollution level increased as foggy conditions and low wind speed obstructed ventilation. As per the Air Quality Early Warning System, the AQI is likely to remain 'very poor' on Friday (Dec 8), although slight improvement is likely to take place on Saturday (Dec 9).<br />

According to the forecast, the air quality may remain 'poor' to 'very poor' next week. As per the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's Decision Support System, 27 per cent of PM2.5 has been attributed to other sources, 15 per cent to transport and 5 per cent to industries which are located in and around Delhi.<br />

On Thursday, both PM2.5 and PM10 levels increased in the air. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, PM2.5 hovered nearly 135.8 micrograms per cubic metre at 6 pm (local time) in comparison to 110.8 a day earlier.<br />

As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital is likely to receive no rain till December 11. Last week, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that Grap-3 has been lifted in the capital city but the government has been making efforts to ensure that Grap-1 and 2 are strictly implemented.</p>

<p>The Indian government on Sunday sounded a high alert in the wake of worsening air pollution in Delhi and its adjoining areas, as it issued a series of measures to curb smog in the national capital city.</p>

<p>The government announced the implementation of stage-IV measures of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) - the highest level of alert - with immediate effect.</p>

<p>It comes as Delhi and its neighbouring cities continue&nbsp;to record 'severe plus' air quality for the fourth consecutive day.</p>

<p>“Keeping in view the prevailing trend of air quality, and in an effort to prevent further deterioration of air quality in the region, the Sub-Committee today has taken the call to invoke all actions as envisaged under Stage IV of GRAP 'Severe Air Quality (Delhi's AQI 450), today with immediate effect in the entire NCR,” Commission for Air Quality Management said in a statement.</p>

<p><strong>The restrictions imposed in New Delhi include </strong></p>

<p>1. Restrict entry of truck traffic into Delhi, with exceptions for trucks carrying essential goods/services and all LNG/CNG/electric trucks.</p>

<p>2. Do not allow non-Delhi-registered LCVs, except EVs/CNG/BS-VI diesel vehicles, into Delhi, except those carrying essential goods/services.</p>

Raging wildfires in Indonesia affect air quality in Singapore

<p>Stage one of the revised Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which was put in place to combat rising air pollution, will likely be activated on coming Sunday (Oct 8), media reports said citing officials. Currently, the air quality in the Indian capital Delhi is at a "moderate" level and has been at this for the past 15 days. However, it is anticipated to tumble down to the "poor" category by the coming weekend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>GRAP was revised in July 2023 with the aim of bolstering measures against deteriorating air quality as a result of rising stubble burning during the winter months.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Delhi AQI</strong></h2>

<p>Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) deteriorated on Thursday (Oct&nbsp;5). The 24-hour average was recorded at 177, which comes under the "moderate" category. The jump in the AQI level is not much and has gone up by just one unit as compared to the previous day's reading of 176 (moderate).&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, with the onset of winter and dropping temperatures, the AQI has been constantly deteriorating. Delhi’s AQI was 155 on Tuesday (Oct&nbsp;3) and 146 on Monday (Oct 2).</p>

<p>Just like last year, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), reportedly said it will depend on the Early Warning System (EWS) for Delhi to take pre-emptive action. Still, CAQM will have to wait for the AQI to get to the “poor” category to implement Stage 1. As per EWS’s forecast, the AQI is likely to be “moderate” on Friday (Oct 6) and could become “poor” on Saturday (Oct 7).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, schools and kindergartens will be required to stop all outdoor activities when API readings reach 100. They will be closed when the API reaches 200.</p>

<p>Environmental organisation Greenpeace has called on countries in the region to enact legislation to hold plantation companies accountable for causing air pollution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Heng Kiah Chun, regional campaign strategist for Greenpeace Southeast Asia, emphasised the need for a domestic transboundary haze act and said that enabling it "is necessary to act as a deterrent, especially as there are bad apples in the industry."<br />

<p>Environmental activists have sued the South African environment minister and the national air-quality officer and a regional unit of ArcelorMittal South Africa for failing to take action against the company over its air pollution, according to a report by Bloomberg.</p>

<p>According to a statement sent through email on Tuesday, the Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance and groundWork filed the lawsuit&nbsp;at the South African High Court. They assert that the government has not taken any action to reduce emissions from ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited’s largest steel plant, located in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg.</p>

<p>The lawsuit is similar to one that was filed against the government in 2022 and won by activists including groundWork because of air pollution from coal-fired plants run by Eskom Holdings SOC Limited and Sasol Limited.</p>

<p>Judge Colleen Collis of the South African High Court concluded in that in the 2022 case,the Environment Minister Barbara Creecy was required by the Constitution to adopt and enforce laws to promote cleaner air.</p>

<p>Presently, the activists claim that Arcelor’s South African branch has failed to reduce air pollution for years, even after installing technology to control emissions. The parties filing the action assert that the government acted leniently and lowered emission restrictions for the company.</p>

<p>“The minister, instead of bringing industries into compliance, continues to allow for weaker limits,” Bloomberg quoted the activists as saying in the court papers. “This erodes the rights of the people living in the area, who are breathing dangerous levels of pollution.”</p>

<p>The southern and eastern regions of Johannesburg have the highest concentration of coal-burning enterprises, contribution to severe air pollution. Coal being the primary fuel for manufacturing petrochemicals, steel, and ferroalloys, provides more than 80 per cent of South Africa’s electricity, has also played a role in the economic development of the continent’s most industrialised country.</p>

<p>A request for comment was not answered by the environment agency or ArcelorMittal South Africa.</p>

Earlier, the FAA had temporarily halted flights to LaGuardia and Philadelphia from the US northeast, Ohio and Mid-Atlantic.</p>

<p>United Airlines announced that it was waiving change fees and fair difference for travellers wanting to reschedule trips on Thursday and Friday (June 9) for cities that are impacted by smoky conditions including New York, Buffalo, Washington, Philadelphia, Syracuse, New York,&nbsp;Hartford, Connecticut, and Columbus, Ohio.</p>

<p>School officials in Yonkers and Freeport decided late Wednesday to close schools for Thursday due to the worsening air quality.</p>

<p>Rochester, New York, near the Canadian border, had the worst air quality in the country, according to IQAir, while six towns along Maryland's Eastern Shore and Delaware were ranked in the bottom 10 for air quality.</p>

<p>"Natural fog is white in colour but in the northwest India region, the colour of the fog changes depending on the dominant pollutant in that region. For instance, in Delhi, the colour of the fog is generally grey because of the high vehicular emission in this region. If you go to areas with high number of industries or areas where burning activities are rampant, the colour of the fog will be black," a senior official of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.</p>

<p><strong>What does the study mean for residents?</strong></p>

<p>For residents of Delhi and National Capital Range (NCR), it simply means that being outdoors in winter is dangerous. The study approves credible scientific apprehensions about health crisis among general population stemming from hazardous air quality during winters.</p>

<p>Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 357 on Monday, worsening from 259 on Sunday.</p>

<p>An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.</p>
