As concerns about an impending rate hike in the US arise, foreign portfolio investment flows (FPIs) into Indian markets have decreased in August following a strong inflow from April to July, according to a report by Mint.

This led to higher bond yields and a stronger dollar. August saw the weakest inflows since February. Due to worries about a rate hike, emerging countries have begun to pull out.

The portfolio flow data is inclusive of investments made on the primary market and in wholesale transactions. After three months of nonstop buying in the cash market, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net sellers, Mint cited VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

According to Vijayakumar, the main factor driving FPIs to sell in the cash market has been the rise in US bond yields and the strength of the dollar index, both of which are detrimental to capital inflows. He said that the financial industry’s profit-booking practices also played a role in the selling by FPIs.

Mint cited Siddharth Khemka, head of retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd., who maintained that, the uncertainty is likely to persist. “There is no clear trend. Uncertainty has increased with no clear indication of the US Federal Reserve’s outlook from US jobs data. The China factor remains another major concern,” Khemka told Mint.

However, block agreements and private equity fund investments show that there is still significant wide market activity. According to analysts, market demand is still quite high as evidenced by subscriptions to initial public offerings (IPOs). Despite their positivity, the market trend is expected to continue to be erratic.

Another rate increase will affect the currency and liquidity, and there are negative risks, according to Khemka.

India is presently facing threats over rising oil prices and uncertainty, raising concerns.

“Currency volatility is again a major risk, and dry weather conditions in September could also add to concerns,” &nbsp;Vikram Cassatt, head of advising at Prabhudas Lilladher Pvt Ltd told Mint. He also pointed out that there may be additional variables, such as inflation rates.

Nishit Master, a portfolio manager at Axis Securities PMS, mentioned that depreciation in rupee versus dollar valuation arbitrage, which could push flows to the Chinese market because it is less expensive, as well as potential increases in energy prices and inflation, are factors that could have a “not very positive” impact on FPI flows in the short term.

On brighter side, FPIs have been selling in the majority of emerging economies in August, primarily as a result of the strengthening dollar and declining bond yields. However, they have performed well in India as compared to other rising markets.

According to Cassatt, Malaysia is the only other Asian market that has had inflows that are higher than those of China, South Korea, and a number of other nations that have experienced significant outflows.

“India can continue to outperform other emerging markets,” Cassatt said.

In terms of economic growth, India is doing well. The robust profit trajectory seen during the first quarter also helped to underpin the markets.

According to Master, the majority of developed markets, including the US, Japan, and the EU (European Union), are either experiencing a recession or have relatively poor growth rates. Even China’s growth has fallen short of market estimates and is predicted to continue to be weak moving forward.

The only big country that would experience substantial growth and draw FPI inflows in such a case is India, according to Master.

Master predicts that FPIs would continue to pour into India despite the dearth of investment prospects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India's economic growth is a "natural by-product" of his nine-year-old government's political stability, as he expressed optimism that it will be a developed nation by 2047 with "corruption, casteism and communalism" having no place in our national life.

In an exclusive interview with PTI, the prime minister also stressed on the need for timely and clear communication of policy stance by central banks, and policy actions by each country in their fight against inflation so that it can prevent negative repercussions on others countries. 
 
While most advanced economies are facing an economic slowdown, chronic shortages, high inflation, and ageing populations, the Indian economy is acknowledged to be the fastest-growing large economy with the largest youth population. 
 
"For a long time in world history, India was one of the top economies of the world. Later, due to the impact of colonisation of various kinds, our global footprint was reduced," he said. 
 
"But now, India is again on the rise. The speed with which we jumped five spots, from the 10th largest economy to the fifth largest in less than a decade has conveyed the fact that India means business," he noted. 
 
Adding a fourth 'D' - development - to the 3Ds of democracy, demography and diversity, he said the period till 2047 is one of huge opportunity and "Indians who are living in this era have a great chance to lay a foundation for growth that will be remembered for the next thousand years." India's USD 3.39 trillion GDP overtook that of the UK in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022, making it the fifth-largest economy in the world behind the US, China, Japan and Germany. 
 
In the three decades before 2014, Modi said, the country saw many governments that were unstable and therefore, unable to get much done. 
 
"But in the last few years, the people have given a decisive mandate [to BJP], which has led to a stable government, predictable policies and clarity in the overall direction," he said.

"This stability is the reason that over the past nine years, several reforms were brought in." These reforms, related to the economy, education, financial sector, banks, digitalisation, welfare, inclusion and social sector, have laid a strong foundation, and “growth is a natural by-product," he said.

The rapid and sustained progress made by India has evoked interest across the world and many countries have been "watching our growth story very closely."

"They are convinced that this progress is not an accident but is happening as a result of a clear, action-oriented roadmap of 'Reform, Perform, Transform'," he said. "For a long time, India was perceived as a nation of over one billion hungry stomachs. But now, India is being seen as a nation of over one billion aspirational minds, more than two billion skilled hands, and hundreds of millions of young people," he said. 
 
He noted that India is home to more than 100 unicorns, is the third-largest start-up hub and its space sector's achievements are being celebrated the world over. India is also breaking all previous records in almost every global sports event and more universities are entering the top rankings of the world year after year, he said. 
 
"With such momentum, I am positive that we will be in the top three economies in the near future," he said. 
 
"By 2047, I am sure that our country will be among the developed countries." Modi said that as a developed nation, the Indian economy will be even more inclusive and innovative, poor people will comprehensively win the battle against poverty, and the nation's health, education and social sector outcomes will be among the best in the world. 
 
"Corruption, casteism and communalism will have no place in our national life," he said. 
 
"The quality of life of our people will be on par with the best countries of the world. Most importantly, we will achieve all of this while caring for both nature and culture," he said. 
 
EY projects India's GDP to cross USD 5 trillion by 2028 to overtake both Japan and Germany. But the US economy is projected to still be nearly six times as large as the Indian economy.

This can ensure that policies taken by each country to combat inflation do not lead to negative repercussions in other countries," he said. 
 
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has been targeting proposals to reduce incentives for tax planning and avoidance by limiting tax competition and changing where companies pay taxes.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of G-20 leaders' summit in New Delhi, called for reform of the United Nations to match the changing geo-economic realities of the world and ensure representation of voices that matter.

Modi's call resonates with South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, who during last month's BRICS summit in Johannesburg called for reforms in the&nbsp;United Nations Security Council.

In an exclusive interview to the Press Trust of India, Modi said the G20 is one of the institutions that is being looked at with "hope" by many countries as the world is looking for actions and outcomes, "no matter where they come from."

India will host the annual summit of the influential grouping in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. 
 
"Today's world is a multipolar world where institutions are extremely important for a rules-based order that is fair and sensitive to all concerns. However, institutions can retain relevance only when they change with the times," the prime minister said. 
 
"A mid-20th century approach cannot serve the world in the 21st century. So, our international institutions need to recognise changing realities, expand their decision-making forums, relook at their priorities and ensure representation of voices that matter," he said. 
 
"When this is not done on time, then smaller or regional forums begin to attain more importance," Modi said in the 80-minute interview. 
 
"The G20 is certainly one of the institutions that is being looked at with hope by many countries. Because the world is looking for actions and outcomes, no matter where they come from,"&nbsp;PM Modi said while noting&nbsp;that India's presidency of the G-20 has come at such a juncture.

"In this context, India's position within the global framework becomes especially pertinent.
