Attention now shifts to the World Cup opener, where co-hosts Mexico face South Africa at a packed Estadio Azteca. The iconic stadium is awash in green as Mexican supporters create a vibrant atmosphere ahead of kick-off.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is finally underway, marking a historic edition of the tournament. Co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, it is the first World Cup to feature an expanded 48-team format, up from 32 nations.
The opening match rekindles memories of the 2010 World Cup curtain-raiser, when hosts South Africa and Mexico played out a thrilling 1-1 draw in Johannesburg. Morocco have been forced into two late changes to their World Cup squad after injuries ruled out winger Abde Ezzalzouli and defender Nayef Aguerd ahead of their opening match against Brazil. Haiti is set to play in its first FIFA World Cup since 1974, but the team has been hit by controversy just days before its opening match against Scotland on Saturday (June 13). FIFA has instructed Haiti to change its jersey, ruling that the design contained political messaging and therefore violated the governing body's regulations on team equipment and kits. Morocco have been forced into two late changes to their World Cup squad after injuries ruled out winger Abde Ezzalzouli and defender Nayef Aguerd ahead of their opening match against Brazil. Morocco have been forced into two late changes to their World Cup squad after injuries ruled out winger Abde Ezzalzouli and defender Nayef Aguerd ahead of their opening match against Brazil. Ezzalzouli, who plays for Real Betis, suffered a knee injury during a friendly against Norway last weekend and has been replaced by Angers forward Amine Sbai, according to the squad list published by FIFA. Meanwhile, Marseille centre-back Aguerd has been sidelined since March following surgery for a groin problem. The defender has been replaced in the squad by Marwane Saadane, who currently plays in Saudi Arabia.

Haiti is set to play in its first FIFA World Cup since 1974, but the team has been hit by controversy just days before its opening match against Scotland on Saturday (June 13). FIFA has instructed Haiti to change its jersey, ruling that the design contained political messaging and therefore violated the governing body's regulations on team equipment and kits.
