Yearender 2018: The year of incredible superhero films

'Black Panther' will go down in history as the movie that truly changed things in Hollywood.

For years Hollywood has talked about the importance of inclusion and diversity but it was merely a lip service until 2018 when MCU released 'Black Panther'- the first non-white superhero film not just had a coloured man as the lead but the entire cast was primarily of African-American actors.

'Black Panther' broke records and created history at the Box Office. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film had some incredible actions scenes, fantastic music and strong women characters- which made the film rather different. (Source: Twitter)

It had been a while since we had seen our favourite Avengers together. Marvel in the past years had been teasing us with multiple stand-alone superhero films- the plotline of each ultimately culminating into a grand finale in this year's 'Avengers: Infinity War'.

The film was a fitting finale to a lot of past MCU films but it also had a cliffhanger ending. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film's ending left fans with several questions which perhaps will finally get answered in the last film of the franchise, 'Avengers: Endgame' which will release in April 2019. When the first film came out, there was an element of surprise. No one had expected a superhero to be this outrageous, neither had they expected him to be so morally wrong yet a do-gooder.

The film's success ensured that the writers and director David Leitch stick to the tried, tested, outrageous plot line.

Perhaps the weakest of the superhero films from the MCU factory, 'Ant-Man and The Wasp' may have given us two new superheroes but their story was a known one which made the film reek of predictability.

Directed by Peyton Reed with Paul Rudd playing 'Ant-Man', the film was watchable not for the superpowers but more for its humour. (Source: Twitter)

Jason Mamoa brought his inherent coolness to his character 'Aquaman'.

One of the most interesting characters of the Justice League, he got his own standalone film within a year of the release of 'Justice League'. In 'Aquaman', DC took the action underwater and gave us a superhero who was nonchalant about his superpowers and also super cool.

Directed by James Wan the film opened to good numbers at the box office. (Source: Twitter)

Tom Hardy got his own superhero film! Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the film was sort of about the anti-hero.

Journalist Brock gained superpowers after being bound to an alien symbiote whose species plans to invade Earth.

While Hardy's performance was lauded,  the film got several negative reviews from critics for its script and inconsistent tone. (Source: Twitter)

Pixar, Marvel, and other big studios also backed animated superhero films this year.

The 'Incredibles 2,' 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse', 'Scooby-Doo! & Batman: The Brave and the Bold' and  'Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash' among others that released this year. (Source: Twitter)
