US spring snowstorm knocks out power across states, leaving over 300,000 in the dark

The town of Virgil, New York, reported 18in of snow, reaching the highest level of predicted snow fall. Albany, New York, the state capital, experienced a phenomenon called thundersnow.
Heavy snow and winds
It is feared that heavy, wet snow could bring down tree limbs, with the NWS warning of wind gusts up to 40mph (64km/h).
Snow storm causing accidents
The snowfall caused multiple vehicle accidents in Pennsylvania. Parts of West Virginia and Maryland saw about 6in of snow, causing heavy traffic on highways in the region.
Officials sound alert
National Grid, a power company in New York State, said on Twitter that heavy snow and strong winds had caused “extensive tree and line damage” in the northern parts of the state.
Road closures and dangerous conditions on streets had also hindered crews “trying to reach damaged infrastructure” on Tuesday, the company said.
Snow storm causing power outages
More than 150,000 utility customers in New York State remained without power on Tuesday night, according to PowerOutage.us, which aggregates data from utilities across the United States. In Pennsylvania, more than 36,000 customers were experiencing outages on Tuesday night.
