The Roman ruins at Jerash are one of Jordan's main tourist draws after the ancient desert city of Petra. Tourism is a mainstay of the Jordanian economy.

Jordan has seen a surge in tourism in the last two years and is considered by tour operators as one of the safest tourist destinations in the Middle East. It has rarely seen attacks on foreign tourists.

The victims included three tourists among the five wounded. Three Spanish women were wounded in a knife attack in Jordan according to a security spokesman. However, Spain said its citizens were not involved.

Videos posted on social media showed a bleeding woman lying on the floor and another panic-stricken woman in a blood-stained T-shirt. Video of the incident that circulated on Jordanian media appeared to show victims speaking Spanish with Latin American accents.

The wounded were transported to hospital for treatment and the assailant was immediately arrested. Two of the tourists are in a critical condition.
