International Migrants Day 2025 - Top 10 countries with highest migrant population in the world
The total number of international migrants is 304 million as of 2024-25. It is rising exponentially and has doubled since 1990. International Migrants Day was first proclaimed by the UN on December 18, 2000, to raise awareness about the rights, contributions, and challenges of migrants.
United States
The United States has the highest migrant population in the world in terms of absolute numbers, with 52.4 million. Mexican people compose the largest share of migrants in the world, followed by Indians and North and Central Americans.
Germany
Europe is the largest continent with the highest migrant population, with 94.1 million people. Germany has the largest number of migrants, around 16.8 million. The majority of the share is Turkish population, followed by Ukrainian, Syrian, Romanian, Polish, Italian and Afghanistani.
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia has approximately 13.7 million migrant population as of 2024-25. Among them, Bangladeshis make up the majority with 2.12 million, followed by a large number of Indians and Pakistanis. There is also a decent amount of Yemeni, Egyptian, Sudanese and Filipino.
United Kingdom
In Europe, the UK hosts the second-largest migrant population with 11.8 million people. However, the UK has witnessed a significant decrease in migration of around 70-80 per cent.
France
France has a 9.2 million migrant population, among them nearly half are from Africa, specifically from its former colonies in North Africa like Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. There is some amount of migration from Sub-Saharan countries like Cameroon and Ghana.
Spain
Spain has an 8.9 million migrant population. The majority of them are from Morocco, and the rest are from Latin American countries like Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador; a small amount is from Romania.
Canada
Canada has around 8.8 million migrant population, with the majority being Indian, and some amount of Pakistani. Other major populations include Filipino, Chinese, Nigerian, Cameroonian, Iranian and American.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE has around 8.2 million migrant population, the majority being Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi, with some amount being from other countries like Iran, Egypt, Philippines, Nepal, etc.
Australia
Australia has around 8.1 million migrant population. The majority are English, followed by Indian, Chinese, New Zelandian, Filipino, Nepalese and Vietnamese
Russia
As of 2024-25, Russia has a 6.7 million migrant population. The majority of them are Ukrainian, and some parts are from Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc. Recently, Russia has set a target of employing 1 million skilled Indian workers.
India
India's migrant population has seen a consistent decline over the past few years. As of 2024, around 0.3 per cent of Indian population is international migrant. However, Indians are the largest global immigrants, with about 18.5 million people living abroad.
