Indian Navy indigenous warships 'INS Udaygiri' and 'INS Himgiri' to be commission on Aug 26: Check details inside
INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri are fully designed by the Warship Design Bureau of the Indian Navy, with Udaygiri being the 100th ship designed in-house. Along with supporting 200 MSMEs, this project is creating about 4,000 direct jobs and over 10,000 indirect jobs.
Two stealth frigates
The Indian Navy is set to commission two new stealth frigates, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, on August 26 at Visakhapatnam. It will set a major milestone in the naval modernisation as it is the first time that two major warships have been built by different Indian shipyards that will be commissioned together.
Project 17A
Both the warships are part of Project 17A, an advanced series of stealth frigates after the Shivalik class. Both are designed and developed to operate in deep-sea (blue water) environments that will handle both traditional and modern maritime threats.
Design and development
INS Udaygiri, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, was handed over to the Indian Navy on July 1. Meanwhile, INS Himgiri is the first of its class to be constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
Enhanced stealth features
Each frigate has a replacement of about 6,700 tonnes, about 5% larger than its predecessor, but comes with enhanced stealth features and reduced radar visibility.
Advanced propulsion and management systems
Powered by a combination of gas turbines (CODOG) and diesel engines, these warships are equipped with advanced propulsion and management systems for better efficiency and maneuverability.
Weapon systems
Warships' weapon systems include supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, close-in weapon systems (30 mm and 12.7 mm), a 76 mm main gun, and anti-submarine weapons.
Sea trials
The INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri have passed their extensive sea trials and are ready to be in service for the Indian Navy.
