India rises against Unnao & Kathua rape case

Protests were called across the nation following the rape cases of an eight-year-old girl, in Kathua, near Jammu and a teenager in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh state. Activists accused authorities of failing to protect women and of moving too slowly to investigate and arrest perpetrators.

In Thiruvananthapuram, protesters formed a human chain, while in Mumbai, hundreds, including film celebrities, called for the death penalty for rapists. In New Delhi they called for rape trials to be completed in six months.

As people held posters and placards questioning the authorities over the women security in India, the issue received an international attention.

The United Nations is among the international bodies that have condemned the problem as they termed the case 'horrific' and hoped that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Details have emerged in a case of an eight-year-old girl belonging to a nomadic tribe that roams the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir who was kidnapped, drugged and held in captivity as eight men assaulted her.

There had been little progress made in the case until activists stepped up their campaign for an investigation.

All accused in the case including one juvenile are arrested and pleaded not guilty during the trial on Monday.

People in different states, staged a silent protest as they took out a candle march in Surat and Kathua.

With peopel taking their anger out on streets, people on social media as well came out in support of the cause.

Lot of Indian celebrities posted their pictures holding a placard demanding justice for the victims.

Celebs showed their concern and questioned the authorities regarding the safety of girls as more and more case are being reported every day.

More protests are also being planned to bring attention to brutal sex crimes against women and the to put pressure on authorities to bring stricter laws against the heinous crime.
