All national television stations broadcast the Independence Day ceremony from the Medaka Palace in Jakarta and decorations in the colours of the national flag were made all around the nation. 

Different communities participated in patriotic and cultural parades and festivities, and activities like carnivals and games like panjat pinang were also held.

The COVID-19 outbreak forced Indonesia to postpone major public events and celebrations. Games like ‘Panjat Pinang', meaning climbing palm trees, took place after two years.
