From 'Ramayana' to 'Shaktiman', how TV is bringing back classics amid lockdown

Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayan' brought the country to a standstill every Sunday when it was aired between 1987 to 1988 at 9:30 am. But no one would have imagined that the same magic would be witnessed three decades later. DD national broght back its first iconic show much to the delight of the audience. Interestingly, the show once again became one of the most-watched shows in television history.

'Mahabharat', first went on air in 1988. It is an Indian television series based on the Hindu epic. It was a 94-episode Hindi series and was produced by BR Chopra and was directed by his son, Ravi Chopra.

After 'Mahabharat' and 'Ramayan', Prasar Bharati has now decided to re-telecast 'Shri Krishna' following people’s demand during the nationwide lockdown. 'Shri Krishna' is an Indian television epic series which showcases the life of Lord Krishna, who is worshipped as the eighth incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu.

Aziz Mirza’s 1989 series 'Circus', which introduced the nation to Shah Rukh Khan was a story of a circus and its members. Khan played Shekharan Rai, the owner of Atlas Circus who had offered to buy the Circus from his father.

Comedy sitcom 'Khichdi' was another crazy family drama which first aired in the year 2001.

After a decade of the highly successful sitcom, 'Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai' is back on TV. The family drama was first aired on Star One in 2004. As the second season of the show was also created for OTT platform Hotstar.

India’s own superhero 'Shaktiman' is back on TV. The sitcom follows a story of Pandit Gangadhar Vidhyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri who is also a Shaktiman-  a human with super powers, a photographer for the newspaper Aaj Ki Aawaz.

Comedy soap 'Dekh Bhai Dekh' was one of the most popular shows on DD Metro. It had premiered on DD Metro on 6 May 1993. The comedy sitcom follows a story of a Diwan family and starred Shekhar Suman, Navin Nischal, Farida Jalal, Urvashi Dholakia,. Bhawna Balsevar and Amar Upadhyay.

'Hum Paanch', was one of the popular family shows of the 90's and the first show that Ekta Kapoor produced. The show follows a story of a middle-class worker, Anand Mathur, who always finds himself in trouble because of his five daughters.

Doordarshan has brought back their detective series 'Byomkesh Bakshi', The Hindi Television series is based on Byomkesh Bakshi character created by Bengali author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The series starred Rajit Kapoor in the lead role.
