From Israel to India, countries that held or will conduct general polls this year

The 17th Lok Sabha election of India is currently being held in seven phases starting from April 11. The final phase of polling will be conducted on May 19.

The two major political parties contesting the elections are the BJP with the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the leader and Rahul Gandhi-led Congress.

The counting of votes will take place on May 23, 2019, the results will be declared the same day.

Spanish General Elections 2019 will be held on April 28, 2019. Spaniards will elect the 13th Cortes Generales of the Kingdom of Spain.

The major parties contesting the elections are the Popular Party (PP) with Pablo Casado as the leader and the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) with former Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as the leader.

Ukraine's 2019 Presidential elections were held between March 31 to April 21, 2019.

The top two candidates contesting the elections were Volodymyr Zelensky, a comic actor who played the role of Ukraine's president in a popular Ukrainian television comedy show.

Zelensky challenged the incumbent leader Petro Poroshenko and unseated him as the results were declared. 

The results came out on April 21, with Zelensky winning the polls with 73.22% of the votes.

Indonesia's general elections took place on April 17.

President Joko Widodo was in a contest with Prabowo Subianto, a former military general.

The results came out the same day with Widodo registering a win and another term for himself.

Israel went to polls on April 9.

The major political parties that contested Israeli 2019 parliamentary elections were PM Benjamin Netanyahu-led Likud party and Benny Gantz's Blue and White.

The final results gave Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party 36 votes, one more than Gantz's centrist Blue and White alliance.

Israel's president nominated Netanyahu to head the next government after he won the backing of a majority of members of parliament following the general election.

Netanyahu has 28 days, with a two-week extension if needed, to complete the task. If, as seems likely, he succeeds, he will become in July Israel's longest-serving prime minister.

Netanyahu has said he intends to build a coalition with five far-right, right-wing and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties that would give the government, led by his Likud party, 65 seats. No party has ever won an outright majority in the 120-seat Knesset.

Nigeria's general elections were held on February 23, 2019.

The top contenders were President Muhammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar, a businessman and former vice president, of the People's Democratic Party.

As a result, Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected as Nigeria's president.
