Dropping a nuclear bomb creates a problem for the aircraft that drops it: the explosion. A nuclear detonation produces a blast wave, a thermal pulse, and an electromagnetic pulse that can destroy an aircraft within a certain radius. The B-2 crew that releases a nuclear weapon has a finite window to get far enough away to survive. The B-2 Spirit was designed to deliver bombs and nuclear weapons to defended targets. It is now being adapted to carry a new generation of weapons: hypersonic missiles that travel at Mach 5 and above, reaching targets in minutes rather than hours. The combination of a stealth aircraft that enemies cannot see carrying a missile that enemies cannot intercept is a new category of military capability. Here is what hypersonic weapons are, how the B-2 carries them, and what this changes about modern warfare.

In March 2013, during a period of heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula following North Korea's third nuclear test, the United States flew B-2 Spirit bombers from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri on a round trip to a bombing range near Seoul. The flight lasted approximately 13 hours. No weapons were dropped on North Korea. The mission was not a strike. It was a message — the most expensive and unambiguous message the US Air Force knows how to send. Here is what it meant, who it was aimed at, and what happened next.

Every B-2 mission that has ever flown more than a few hundred miles from Missouri has depended on aerial refuelling. On a 44-hour mission to Afghanistan or a 25-hour mission to Libya, the B-2 takes on fuel multiple times from KC-135 Stratotankers and KC-10 Extenders.

From the moment the B-2 Spirit flew its first combat mission over Kosovo in 1999, China identified it as the primary airborne threat to its strategic interests and began building countermeasures.&nbsp;
